These New Puritans “Navigate, Navigate” (12 minutes?!) review

Oooh I love it when I receive CDs in the mail. Especially when the music is as obscure as what is coming from Southend’s These New Puritans.

When I first read in These New Puritans’ press note that their track, “Navigate, Navigate” is just over 12 minutes long, at first I cringed. 12 minutes? The good thing is that by the time I returned to their CD a couple days later, the press note was hidden under a pile of papers and I had already forgotten about the 12 minutes as I slipped the CD in.

As I busied myself with computer stuff whilst listening, at first I wasn’t so sure about the track. There’s a lot going on in “Navigate, Navigate” and I had a few mixed emotions about the song.

It was when the marching drum rhythms kicked in that I had to pull away from what I was doing and give “Navigate, Navigate” my full attention. Then it dawned on me – wait a minute, how long is this song? I had to look to see. Oh yeah – 12 minutes.

The funny thing, is that These New Puritans have succeeded with “Navigate, Navigate” by taking the listener through a musical journey of sorts and the 12 minutes is apropos. If anything, don’t let this 12 minute long song scare you – it’s worth the ride.

Interesting track indeed.
