Brainlove Records are proud to present ‘Build Library Here (or else!)’, a reissued version of Pagan Wanderer Lu’s 2005 album. Following on the heels of his acclaimed 2006 EP “The Independent Scutineer”, this CD offers highlights of PWL’s prolific recording career to date, making six years of back-catalogue available to new listeners. The release is part of the new Brainlove Editions series, which focuses on the kind of DIY, handmade releases that helped make the label’s name.

The album was written and recorded on 8-track in Aberystwyth during the year of sporadic unemployment when PWL (an increasingly influential figure on the thriving Cardiff music scene) first made his first ripples on the Welsh scene as a lo-fi anti-hero, taking his far-fetched tales and electro-pop protests to a wider audience with only a Groovebox and a guitar for company. ‘Build Library Here’ received a DIY self-release which quickly sold out. Housed in hand-cut card packaging with pritt-sticked artwork these copies were treasured by the lucky few who acquired them.

Featuring many songs which have been popular staples of his live shows such as “Good Christian/Bad Christian” and “Show Me Yr Knuckles”, as well as the first version of “The Memorial Hall” – recorded on the day it was written – the album captures the spontaneity of PWL’s earlier recordings, as well as the sheer diversity of his muse. Flitting between scratchy rock and roll, electronica, simple acoustic folk, and unabashed pop it is sure to please new fans who didn’t get the chance to hear it first time around, and whet appetites for PWL’s forthcoming new single “The Tree Of Knowledge”, to be released in Autumn 2007, with a tour planned featuring PWL & The Volunteers and fellow emerging Cardiff indie luminaries Spencer McGarry Season.

What people are saying:

“Whether its Nintendo-folk, folktronica or Casio-coustic, it sounds like someone gleefully hammering together two pieces of a jigsaw that arent supposed to fit.”Drowned In Sound ‘Picks for 2006’

“A warped genius, like Hans Christian Andersen as sung by Mark E Smith. A man with a musical brain quite unlike any other”Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales

“Like Britpop Dismantled”eMusic

“If, like us, you’ve got a soft spot for a bit of satirical genius backed by a damn good pop song, look no further.”This Is Fake DIY

“Taking the art school dramatic of TV On The Radio and giving it a death march stomp, Pagan Wanderer Lu again astounds us with his vision, promise and sonic ability – never has something so miserable sounded so vital… Would’ve given it EP of the month, but our quotes never get used.”Subba Cultcha

“In a parallel universe somewhere (where there is less war and more wonky electronic pop), Repetition 2 has been number 1 for 8 weeks.”Single of The Year – The Console

“The stinging guitar, crashing keyboards and freaky, mutated effects, all sound like the product of a number of wide eyed, e-number ridden children re-writing some mouthy folk songs.”MapsMagazine.co.uk

“Like Graham Coxon’s earlier and stranger solo material as covered by the Aphex Twin using only stuff he’s found at car boot sales”ManchesterMusic.co.uk

“Electro-tinged folk with a heavy pop heart at its core, with each beat another heart is broken.” Subba Cultcha

“Wryly seething lyrics are married to lo-fi keyboards that smash up pop melodies and attempt to wire them back together in a skewiff fashion.”Sweeping The Nation

“Showing a playful approach to arrangement, Lu decorates one verse with jaunty wap wap backing vocals and drops in an 8 bit Nintendo bassline for an instrumental break. Inventive, soulful and witty, this is a superb calling card.”Beard Magazine
