Hated - GG Allin and The Murder Junkies, a Todd Phillips Movie review

Right, listen here you all. Ok? I've been going to punk gigs ever since the 70's, and I pretty much thought that I had seen some of the most outrageous gigs ever known to mankind.

Hated - GG Allin and The Murder Junkies

I had seen the Sex Pistols explode, I used to go 'round with The Clash. I was there when JJ Burnel beat some poor sod up on stage. I played a lot of mad gigs myself in my band 4 Minute Warning. Had bottles thrown at me and fists aimed at my head. Yes, I played at some of the craziest places in England. You see the problem is...the problem is that English punk bands only went as far as the words. Yeah Crass said some mad things and upset the government for real, but they were only words. Now, a lot of you aren't gonna like this but the Americans did it a whole lot better than we did.

GG Allin. The only real punk who took it out on to the streets. This man died for his punk beliefs. He would beat up his audience, crap on stage and eat his own excrement and dance in it. He performed naked and cut himself up and sang songs about his life and lived his words. Yes this man is the only punk I am aware of who did it for real.

Yeah, GG Allin took it further than just words. He was scary to watch. Not like Iggy Pop who wouldn't go too far. It was just pantomime punk with Uncle Iggy. Same as bands like the Anti Nowhere League. Scary on paper, but when it comes down to it they could only take it as far as the stage would let them.

There were no boundaries with GG Allin. He would be singing while a member of the audience would be shoving a vegetable up his arse. I know what your thinking. How puerile, how shallow. No, this bloke was reflecting what was going on in the outside world. He was on stage what the human race were like on the planet. Yes, he was puerile and shallow because we are too. Don't you see? This was the living breathing reality of all of what punk was supposed to be about.

So if you are still thinking, 'No mate, I'm sorry but "Never Mind The Bollocks" was the best album ever made and Johnny Rotten is the punk prince who deserves to be remembered as the main man of all what we called punk rock.' If you are still thinking that, then go and buy this DVD that I have just witnessed, 'Hated - GG Allin and The Murder Junkies', a Todd Phillips movie. Go get that and watch it.

Included with the documentary is additional music, plus 50 minutes of live footage of his last gig. The final day he was alive. This is like home movie quality. It's like you are there with him. A riot erupts from the gig and flows out onto the streets of New York City. People are then following a blood streaked, crap stained GG Allin along the road to a party where he would die of a drug overdose that night back in the summer 1993.

GG Allin. He's like "Satan, Jesus and God all rolled into one!!"
