Single Released 19th November 2012
Album Due Early 2013
Division Street is the first single to be taken from Holiday Life, the forthcoming sophomore release by fast rising New York based five-piece Ravens & Chimes.
Division Street is a glorious three minutes of hypnotic piano-led pop. Simplistic and beautifully hooky it instantly calls to mind a number of musical greats without ever feeling like mimicry or posing. There's something a little XO-circa Elliott Smith in the hushed, double tracked vocals and dusky lyrics of singer Asher Lack (son of famed painter and contemporary of Basquiat and Keith Haring Stephen Lack), there's something a bit Arcade Fire about the relentless push and pull of the song and the intricately simple percussion and the beautifully sparse production recalls The XX. Indeed there's something here that reminds you of a number of timeless artists but the whole, all those elements put together, create something utterly new and unique.
Ravens and Chimes - Division Street video:
The forthcoming Holiday Life album follows the critically lauded 2007 debut Reichenbach Falls, an album that saw Ravens & Chimes gain highly respectful nods from the likes of Spin, Nylon, The LA Times...and Leonard Cohen who contacted the band to give his seal of approval to their cover of his own So Long Marianne.
After the initial buzz the next four years found the band in turmoil; exhausted and frustrated from an intense touring schedule the writing of their second offering slipped further and further back on the to-do list. The creative catalyst eventually arrived in the form of album track Carousel, a song originally intended for inclusion on the soundtrack of the film Twilight: Eclipse. It's completion left the band rejuvenated, free of blocks and kicking through walls, allowing the remainder of Holiday Life to let itself be known.
Holiday Life is due to be released in the UK in February 2013.
During their extensive years of touring the US Ravens & Chimes have shared stages and toured with such luminaries as Frightened Rabbit, The Joy Formidable, The Fiery Furnaces, Billy Bragg, Other Lives and Dan Deacon to name but a few.
Ravens & Chimes worked with Reichenbach Falls producer Howard Bilerman, the mighty engineer/drummer of Arcade Fire's Funeral, to add to tracks recorded with Larry Crane (Elliott Smith, The Decemberists). The result is Holiday Life - an album pulsing with triumphant energy and Division Street is a perfect introduction to the rich sonic landscape of Ravens & Chimes.
