Truth and Soul Records’ Lady Releases Limited Time Only Free Download!
Download: “Tell The Truth”
True ambassadors of soul, Lady, have released a free download of “Tell The Truth” (link below), from their self-titled debut album on the legendary Truth And Soul Records.
“Tell The Truth” is a perfect blend of the mellowness, and pop flair of 60’s soul with the driving beat of hip-hop.
“Tell The Truth” oozes with the sort of bare-it-all vocals and aptly emotive instrumentation that made the soul of the 60’s and 70’s so special, and pushed the boundaries of popular music in a way that came to define an entire generation. The track features soaring vocals, which are chased by warm, vintage organs and a bouncing bassline that stands prominently out on the beautifully arranged track.
All it takes is one listen to become completely enamored with Nicole Wray, the frontwoman and creative force behind Lady. Her honesty, the aching sweetness, the raw power of her voice and the songs will remind you that nothing can move you as much, or touch you as deeply, as that single voice that somehow explains your every emotion.
She’s collaborated with Missy Elliott, Cam’ron, Kid Cudi and perhaps most importantly The Black Keys, who really encouraged her to engage her solo career after being a part of their Blakroc project and singing back-up vocals on their critically-acclaimed Brothers LP. Lady, the album, has also turned quite a few heads among music’s most revered tastemakers, as Essence Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone have all offered high praise of the record.
The band will be heading out on their first headline dates on the west coast later this month, as well as their first European headline tour later this fall. Check the tour dates below for more information on the west coast dates, and prepare to take your hat off to Lady as you quickly fall in love with their sound.
“A first listen turns up nods to Curtis Mayfield, Ann Peebles, the Temptations, Honey Cone and the O’Jays. Listen longer and you’ll find more.” – New Yorker
“Lady nails that magic formula of sweet vocal stylings anchored by the heavy thump and growl of a crack rhythm section. It’s an update on the classic sound of early 1970s Memphis soul: part Sunday-morning glory, part Saturday-night slow grind.” – NPR’s All Things Considered
