The other day I was talking to a lorry driver mate. It’s funny how in England we call lorries, lorries. In America they’re called TRUCKS, and a truck is a much more impressive piece of machinery. Huge long hood and gleaming with chrome.

This driver was telling me that the Yanks even have toilets in their trucks!! Whereas here, our lorries are not as impressive are they? Flat fronted none discript boxes on wheels. It does what it says on the tin, mate! Gets goods from point A, to point B.

Anyway. I was talking to this lorry driver mate of mine about British comedians. He was trying to remember this guy’s name, describing him as “that bloke who tells it like the way you’re thinking”.

I then suggested the joke he does about the funny walk (not John Cleese) and he said “Michael McIntyre” and I said yes!! Oh how we both laughed just thinking of him. What a funny chap he is. Well done Mr. McIntyre for being funny and thank you.

If you want to go see him live he is playing all the big venues (how kind of him) so that you all can get in to witness this gentleman’s humour.

Carlos Mencia

Recently I stumbled upon Carlos Mencia on Youtube. God how this man saved me from a couple hours of boredom!

I haven’t had such a comedic eureka moment since the day I superglued my math teachers ass to his chair (honestly you had to have been there). This guy is one of the funniest, most honest stand up comedians since (in my opinion) Bill Hicks.

Carlos has a number of DVD’s out there, one of which was released back in 2005 entitled ‘Not For The Easily Offended’ and it does what it says. I mean if you think this world is a beautiful place, our children are our future and religion is our savior, then this is not for you.

But if you like to laugh at reality in all its ugliness, then Carlos Mencia will have you slapping your dog, with tears of laughter rolling down your cheeks.

Here is Carlos doing what he does best. From his ‘Not For The Easily Offended’ DVD. If this don’t kick your laughter button into action then stick your fingers in to the electric plug socket while standing in a bucket of water and give us all a good laugh. Just kidding!

The vintage comedy review that I’m going to point you in the direction of today is Derek & Clive. These are the alter egos of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

Most of you will know Dudley Moore for his movie “Arthur”, and Peter Cook for his influential role on the “Monty Python” team.

The first TV show that Peter and Dudley worked together on was “Not Only But Also”, which debuted in 1965. In 1976 they conceived the characters Derek & Clive. Though far too controversial for TV, they released two albums, ‘Get The Horn’ (which is also available on DVD) and ‘Ad Nauseaum’ – both cult classics listened to and raved about by a new generation of comedy fans.

Definitely not for the easily offended.

Here is ‘Ad Nauseaum’ in all it colourful four lettered glory.

If you are offended by rude words please don’t listen to this.

But if you like genius comedy guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, then proceed my friends.

Tim Vine Live

I recently had the pleasure of watching the Tim Vine Live DVD.

Tim Vine holds the record for the most jokes told in a certain amount of time – it says on the cover of the DVD “Guinness world record holder for telling the most jokes in an hour”.

He rattles them out at a furious pace. He uses props including a dictaphone which he refers to throughout the show. I found myself pausing the DVD on a number of occasions just to catch my breath. He really does crank them out. He’s like a human joke telling machine gun.

This show was recorded in 2004 but it’s still fresh. Tim is one of those comedians you’re gonna love or hate. He’s sort of in the same shop as the late great Tommy Cooper, with his sweating and the occasional pleading look out at the audience.

I recommend this DVD as a good night in with some friends and a few drinks. You too will have aching jaw muscles by the end!

Because God knows we all need a good chuckle in these days of Credit crunching. Although there was light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately it had to be turned off due to the recession. I know, we shouldn’t laugh at misfortune……but, F**** it! We’ve been laughing at the man falling over since cave man days (and do you know what? It just gets funnier)! Look I can prove it – check out this clip:

Man falling over video:

If you are a stand-up comedian or an agent / manager, please send us information of gigs, books or releases and we’ll endeavor to review and/or publish press releases for you.

Simply email: info at bandweblogs dot com with your information and enquiries.

In the meantime, I would like to play you some of the late great Bill Hicks. In my opinion one of the cleverest comedians to spit into a mic’. Now this show was the first time I had seen or heard of Mr Hicks and it freaked me out!!

Sit back “smoke a cigarette” or eat some popcorn and laugh at this man.

The Coral - Roots and Echos

I arrived at the Carling Academy Oxford just in time to grab a beer and see Manchester, UK based band Northern Uproar take the stage. I like their positive, upbeat punk influenced sound. They look good on stage together and it’s always good to see a bass playing vocalist.

I enjoyed the burly guitarist’s Steve Jones/Mick Jones influence. There was also a bit of a Jam style to their music. All around, I think that Northern Uproar is a good band to look out for.

The Coral are one of my favourite bands on the scene at the moment, so it was great to get the chance to see them play live in Oxford. I wasn’t disappointed after listening to their new album ‘Roots and Echoes’. They weren’t shy in promoting said album and why not because when they played “Who’s Gonna Find Me” it sounds a million times better standing in the same room as the band, hearing it live.

I feel a bit of a Beach Boys vibe off them in a slight way and do believe that The Coral will be with us for a very long time. It’s always good to watch a band mature in front of you.

So definitely go along to a live Coral show because they make you forget about what’s going on outside and they get you wobbling from side to side with a smile on your face for an hour or so!
