They aren’t sick of Sarah - actually, they love Sarah.

The band, Sick Of Sarah, was named when lead singer Abisha Uhl, 25, was talking to her roommate, Sarah, who was complaining that she didn’t like her name, that she was “sick of Sarah.” Uhl was inspired to use it as the name of her band, which originally was Sparkle Motion. After learning there were hundreds of other bands with the same name, they decided to go by Sick of Sarah.

Sick of Sarah, an all-girl band of boundless energy, met through mutual friends in 2005. They are releasing their self-titled debut album in summer of 2008.

The band which has a strong local following in their hometown of Minneapolis are beginning to draw attention nationally. It was after winning the MTV virtual Kaya’s Battle of the Bands they released a single “Bittersweet” through LA indie Adamant Records. That single caught the attention of Spin Magazine which compared them to the Breeders and Sleater-Kinney in a “Buzzcatcher” story.

Minneapolis serves as a symbol of the Sick Of Sarah sound. The city has served as the breeding ground for some of the most iconic and diverse music, from Prince to Bob Dylan to the Replacements and Husker Du.

Sick of Sarah is five young women with five different tastes in music. The debut album is an amalgam of these disparate influences; a confluence of John Fogerty, Sleater-Kinney, Michelle Branch, Babes In Toyland, and Joan Jett to name only a few. “We write all our own stuff; it qualifies as indie pop-rock,” says Abisha Uhl. “It is very melodic. We like sweet melodies and ballads, but we also like punk and the edgier stuff.” Uhl further describes the music as “crazy, fun and obnoxious.”

Recently, Sick Of Sarah won best emerging artist at this years Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The all female five piece was given the award by winning over the festival crowd whose texts determined the day’s winner from the Emerging Artist stage.

The band will be doing a tour around the release of the album bringing their newly christened “award-winning” show to Minneapolis on August 8, 2008 at Cabooze followed by shows in Milwaukee at Shanks Hall on August 13, the Double Door in Chicago on August 14 and Brooklyn, Michigan’s Jerry’s Pub on August 15 and 16.

The band, only in their 20’s, aren’t sick of much. They love touring, recording and causing general mischief.

Connie Francis’s story really is the stuff of legends. A tale that has just about everything you could conceive from someone who has recorded over 70 albums, rivalled Madonna in record sales and has endured terrible tragedy along the way. It’s the absorbing story of a woman who was the prototype US female pop singer.

Concetta Rosemarie Franconero was born of Italian American parentage and began playing accordion at the age of three. At ten years old, she was accepted on Startime, a New York City television show that featured talented child singers and performers. Its host, legendary TV talent scout Arthur Godfrey, had difficulty pronouncing her name and suggested something “easy and Irish,” which turned into Francis. After three weeks on Startime, the show’s producer and Francis’ would-be manager advised her to dump the accordion and concentrate on singing. Francis performed weekly on Startime for four years.

At 16, Francis signed her first recording deal signing to the MGM label. Her debut single “Freddy” was released in 1955 and was followed by several follow-ups that all flopped.

She was contemplating a new career when, in 1957, she entered the studio for her final MGM recordings. She was due to record three songs, finished the first two and then prepared to leave before it was pointed out that the studio and musicians had been booked for three. The last song was her father’s idea and originated from 1923. Called “Who’s Sorry Now” she sang it in one take.

When Dick Clark played “Who’s Sorry Now” on American Bandstand, he told its eight million viewers that Connie Francis was “a new girl singer that is heading straight for the number one spot.” It did just that in May 1958, spending six weeks at the top of the US singles chart.

The Sixties were also incredibly productive for Francis. “Who’s Sorry Now” was the pre-cursor to a long string of worldwide hits. By 1967, she had sold 35 million worldwide, with 35 U.S. Top 40 hits, and three number ones (“Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool,” “My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own,” “Don’t Break the Heart That Loves You,” and “Stupid Cupid”) to her credit.

The public and Elvis adored her. She also recorded one of the earliest known charity records, 1963’s “In The Summer Of His Years” was a tribute to John F Kennedy with all proceeds donated to dependents of the policemen shot during the assassination.

Francis also became one of the first pop singers to record her songs in other languages. 1961’s title song from the movie Where the Boys Are was recorded in six different languages transforming her from a teenage idol to a mature performer at leading nightspots around the world.

The relationship with MGM finally ended in 1969, with Francis choosing not to renew her contract when MGM was taken over by Polydor. Francis opted to spend the next four years with her third husband Joseph Garzilli.

She returned to the studio in 1973 when long time friends L. Russell Brown and Irwin Levine (writers of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon”) wrote “The Answer” especially for her. Encouraged by Garzilli, a year later she made her return to the stage but an appalling tragedy struck after the third comeback show in New York, Francis was raped at knifepoint back at her hotel.

Following nasal surgery caused by a sensitivity to air conditioning that rendered her voice unusable for four years, Connie was on the comeback trail in 1981 when her brother George was murdered by mobsters. The 7 years of horrendous personal grief had seen Francis addicted to prescription drugs and finally after years of manic depression, she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

After writing her autobiography Who’s Sorry Now in 1984, Connie Francis returned to recording and performance in 1989.

In late December 2004 she headlined in Las Vegas and still continues to wow audiences today with her beautifully intact vocal.

These days it seems rock can move at a snail’s pace…what with bands marching to corporate schedules and marketing strategies, over-thinking everything along the way, it can take a couple of years just to get an album released. But Mink is seizing the moment…and intends to hold on tightly.

The band has clearly hit the ground running.

Formed just a blink ago in Spring 2006, Mink has already written more than 60 songs (30 of them in one intense three-week stretch), recorded their debut album in just four weeks (with noted producer Sylvia Massy of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tool fame), shot one of the most fun videos of recent times for its infectious song “Talk to Me” with director Christian Lamb (Madonna, Korn, Kelly Clarkson, Incubus), had another song “Dematerialize” go top 10 on the modern rock specialty chart and has established itself as one of the most exciting new live acts on the scene - both in its own club shows and opening big-venue concerts for the likes of Perry Farrell and Angels & Airwaves among others.

And all that while going back and forth between New York (from where Carlson hails) and Australia (home to drummer Mozgawa, lead guitarist Nick Maybury, and bassist Grant Fitzpatrick).

Heroes of Popular Wars are set to play at Rehab in New York City on Tuesday August 12th, 2008 at 10:30pm. Rehab is at 25 Ave B (2nd and 3rd).

The Missouri-born, Brooklyn transplant TK Webb is back with ‘Ancestor’, his Kemado Records debut album.

After releasing two solo records, TK Webb made the decision to form The Visions in the summer of 2007.

Joining him in the new band on second guitar is Brian Hale (ex-Love As Laughter), Nic Gonzales (The Comas, Love As Laughter, Blood on the Wall) on drums, and Jordan Gable rounding out the line up on bass.

The addition of the full band takes TK’s acoustic visions and plugs them in, creating a heavier, more cohesive Delta Blues inspired rock experience.

MySpace Secret Shows is pleased to announce that Jason Mraz, one of modern music’s most inventive and compelling live performers, will play a stripped down set in Hartford, CT at Webster Underground on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 8 PM.

9. Broken - On the verge of success and international stardom, I had the dreams I helped build with my band mates snatched away. I was left to crash and burn, broken. I chose to stand tall. When I’m Beat you won’t see me down, when I’m beat I’ll turn it around, or at least I’ll try. I think I did.

There is one classic saying that perfectly describes Naturally 7; Never judge a book by its cover. This is the one case where what you see, just isn’t what you get.

Naturally 7 are seven guys from New York City (although two members Roger and Warren Thomas were born in Manchester, England) whose image brings to mind heavy hip-hop beats more akin to a dollar than 50 Cent and yet here they are on tour for the second time as special guests to Michael Buble.

Dubbed VocalPlay by Naturally 7 themselves, they have created a precise art form of using their vocals as instruments. Their entire sound; the rhythms & beats, the bass, the keyboard and up-beat soul vocals are all produced by nothing more than their very versatile voices. Shiny, glittery, subversive pop music. Ladytron rose out of the industrial wasteland of Liverpool and emerged with their own brand of pristine, tightly structured synth pop with instant hits like “He Took Her To A Movie” and “Playgirl”. Ladytron shaped the sound of electroclash before the style even had a name.

Ladytron was formed when Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu, the tall dark figures at the back of the stage, discovered the ladies of Ladytron - Mira Aroyo (who has a Ph.D in genetics) and Helena Marnie - on train in Bulgaria. Their albums 604, Light & Magic and Witching Hour have established Ladytron’s unique style of heartbroken disco, mashing vintage synths and the Kraftwerk-esque dual female vocals.

They’ve have lent their trademark sound on remixes for the likes of Bloc Party, Bonde Do Role, Felix Da Housecat, Placebo and Nine Inch Nails. Sold out tours through North America, Europe, China and Latin America and support slots for Nine Inch Nails and The Chemical Brothers show the diverse audiences the dynamic four piece attract.

Ladytron are back with their fourth album, ‘Velocifero’, a tantalising piece of distorted soul drawing on the wealth of two decades of electronica, new wave and rock. Recorded in Paris with co-production from Alessandro Cortini, former touring keyboardist for Nine Inch Nails and Vicarious Bliss of electronica label Ed Banger, ‘Velocifero’ is an evolution of Ladytron as they again combine their edgy digital sound with the contrasting soulful vocals of Mira and Helena over a depth not seen in their earlier work. ‘Velocifero’ proves why Ladytron have shaped this genre and cements their position at its foreground.

Australian audiences can bear witness to these savy purveyors of sinister pop in 2008 when the ‘tron embark on their first ever tour of Australia. The Liverpudians will be supported on their national tour by the “Kitsune-style electro-pop” of Swedish 2 piece Familjen who currently have their song “Det Snurrar I Min Skalle” on mega rotation on Triple J.

Despite their current city of residence, Low vs. Diamond is not only a Los Angeles band. They are, in every sense of the word, an American band - with all of the members hailing from backgrounds as diverse as their hometown cities themselves…Seattle (vocalist/guitarist Lucas Field), Chicago (drummer Howie Diamond), San Francisco (keyboardist Tad Moore) and the “Jersey Guys” (lead guitarist Anthony Polcino and bassist Jon Pancoast). This melting pot of musicians was established a few short years ago when they formed Low vs. Diamond.

While never concealing their nods to current bands ranging from U2, in scope, to the Strokes, in grit… Low vs. Diamond are clearly possessed by those that passed before them. It’s these roots that define the essence of what separates this band from the rest.

Low vs. Diamond achieve something uniquely intimate with their attention paid to songwriting. Real songwriting. You hear the complex song styling of Serge Gainsbourg, Burt Bacharach, and even Broadway. Real songs with real stories. Lyrically, Lucas weaves in themes dealing with family (such as “Actions Are Actions” and “Don’t Forget Sister”,) and stories about saying farewell to love (”Heart Attack” and “Wasted”). Each track on their self titled debut album is as lucid and cinematic in scope.

Kevin Bronson from the Los Angeles Times explains it best, writing that the band “stands precipitously between overwrought melancholy and chimey hopefulness, avoiding both excesses … the band’s music plays to an optimism that stops short of outright glee.”

Additionally, iTunes has chosen the quintet as one of their favorite up-and-coming bands of 2008. As part of their “Next Big Thing” program, iTunes is offering fans an opportunity to purchase the band’s upcoming self-titled album before its release this summer.
