Bryn Christopher is a wonderful new English singer with a voice like a runaway freight train. His talent got him the sought-after support slot on Amy Winehouse’s tour at the end of last year while he was still totally unknown, but the secret is out now.

Bryn’s debut album, ‘My World’, was produced by Midi Mafia, who recently secured the exclusive rights to use samples from the infamous Stax Records catalogue and have used some of these for the first time ever on Bryn’s album, making it a rare gem indeed.

‘The Quest’ EP (digital) will be released by Interscope on September 16, 2008, followed by his full-length, ‘My World’, on January 13, 2009 (dates subject to change).

Bryn wrote his first single, “The Quest” on his mobile phone, and draws on his brother’s personal experience as a soldier stationed in Basra.

“The Quest” is also being used in promo spots running this month for the upcoming season of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Listen to Bryn Christopher (streams):

“My World”

“The Quest”

Bryn Christopher US tour dates:

Monday, September 22, 2008 – Los Angeles – Viper Room – 8:00pm Show
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 – New York – Joes Pub – 7:30pm Show

UK Press:

“The Quest is quite brilliant and that is all there is to it” Popjustice – Song of the day

“The Quest offers a remodelled vision of smoke-filled Harlem joints, of sweat dripping from a performer’s brow and with it a reminder that being a soul singer is not simply about having a cracking voice.” Times Online – Track of the Day

“Modishly retro and a voice that will no doubt make him a legend” – Sunday Times Culture

Kym Franklin and Aardvark Records have teamed up for the release of the soul album ‘Spiritual Soul Goddess’ due out worldwide in August 2008. The album is a collaborative effort between the Illinois-based soul and gospel vocalist, the rhythm and blues band The Cleft Way, powerhouse producer Mark Burleson plus lyricist and arranger BB Mayes.

Kym Franklin elegantly demonstrates that powerful vocals needn’t be solely loud – her vocal power resonates in the nuances of her emotional delivery as well as her extensive vocal range. She brings considerable experience as a powerful and versatile vocalist having mastered her own style of singing eclectic soul. Kym has shared the stage with the O’Jays, Chuck Berry, Jesse Dixon, Al Green, Taylor Dayne and Bill Cosby. She has also provided background vocals for R. Kelly.

‘Spiritual Soul Goddess’ flips between soul and AAC adult contemporary with an enviable ease. Touches of gospel throughout the album add versatility and depth.

Alex di Savoia, the newly appointed Managing Director of Aardvark Records, said “True soul music has the reputation for delivering simple human truths with passion, honesty and vibrant rhythms. It is part of soul music’s iconic history and its source of continually winning fans with each new generation. In this ‘Spiritual Soul Goddess’ pays the tradition of soul music the utmost respect.” When speaking of Kym, di Savoia said; “Kym has successfully built a career supporting some of the most popular and famous names in soul. Now is the time for her to step into the limelight and be recognised in her own right.”

Watch “Mama Said” video:

“Beauty”, the first single to be released from the album is a song filled with a soulful powerful subtlety. It’s a song where all of the elements come together seamlessly: evocative and uplifting lyrics, vocals as smooth as Mulberry silk and tight musical arrangements. “Moment of Balance”, steeped in Southern Soul, delivers more power in the lyrics and the vocals.

“Spiritual Soul Goddess” and “Mama Said” deliver soul with a faint African vibe in their rhythm sections. Both typify the artist and the album’s central message: be proud, be strong and never sacrifice integrity. “How Do I” mixes acoustic rhythm and blues with a distinct gospel vibe and an underlying humour. It is foot tappin’ good fun that wouldn’t sound out of place in a good ol’ jook joint.

“Your Clothes” has Kym laying it all on the table with an unflinching openness. This is soul from a different era. “Love is the Seed”, “Where’s William”, “Give Me Jesus” and “The Greatest Love Ever Known” end the album in a gospel territory suffused with soul.

Advance CDs are available in the US (through Kunaki). Downloads are available on iTunes, Amazon, Napster and other major download services.

Rhino UK is proud to present a fascinating 39 track, 2 CD set of highlights from the groundbreaking BBC 2 TV music show Later…with Jools Holland – the selections drawn from more recent series of the long running show. ‘Later…Live with Jools Holland’ is set for UK release January 28th, 2008.

The 2 CDS reflect Later…with Jools Holland’s mix of established and new acts drawn from every walk of musical life. The full track listing is below but featured artists include Amy Winehouse, Kasabian, Lily Allen, The White Stripes with Jools himself, Muse and Kings Of Leon rubbing shoulders with the more upcoming likes of King Creosote, Adele, Duffy and Seasick Steve.

Later…with Jools Holland has been the most sought after TV outlet for both stellar names and relative unknowns (many of whom have gone on to much bigger things) since it was first broadcast in 1992. 25 of the 39 acts on this CD made their TV debut on Later and 13 of the tracks featured are debut performances anywhere in the world including those by Mika, Adele, Duffy, The Fratellis, Seasick Steve and Kate Nash.

Later…recently completed it’s 30th series and more than a thousand artists have performed well over 2,500 songs during the shows’ first 15 years. Rhino’s 2 CD set is released the week that Later…celebrates its 200th show on Friday February 1st, 2008 with guests including Radiohead, Cat Power and Dionne Warwick.

The program has always presented a unique blend of acts on each show and has a reputation that always brings the best, often presenting the artist in a novel setting – Mika here performing solo, Gnarls Barkley with their string section, Kano and Damon Albarn. This is a remarkable collection of solo artists and bands, reflecting a phenomenal mix of music styles. Where else are you likely to hear James Blunt, The Flaming Lips, Kaiser Chiefs, Jose Gonzales and Green Day under one rafter-rattling roof?

With the first two albums selling over 350k copies between them, UMTV have put together another brilliant album of the best songs of the year – ‘Essential Songs 2008′, set for release in the UK on 3rd December 2007.

Now that the end of the year is in sight, it’s time to sit back and reminisce about the good times of 2007 and get ready to see in the New Year. What better way to do this than by listening to the biggest essential songs of the year?

The track list reads like a who’s who of pop royalty. From the shiny new, to the classic greats. Starting with the come back kings Take That and their massive new hit “Rule The World” (from the hit movie Stardust), moving onto the collaboration between modern day diva Amy Winehouse and superstar producer Mark Ronson with the track “Valerie”. With new blood from the Coronation Street heartthrob Richard Fleeshman, and classics from legends Oasis, The Cranberries and Paul Weller, CD 1 really does have something for everyone.

The second CD opens with the exclusive of pop prince Mika’s new track “Happy Ending” and carries on with an eclectic mix of songs from artists old and new, with girl power being added by Feist and her catchy “1234″ and Mutya Buena with “Real Girl”.

If that isn’t enough to entice you, ‘Essential Songs – 2008′ also includes tracks from some of the finest artists in the world including The Killers, Nelly Furtado, Embrace and Pop royalty Elton John.

The UK V Festival is set to take place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Essex and Weston Park, Staffordshire, England on Saturday August 18th and Sunday August 19th 2007.

There are quite a few bands included in the V Festival lineup that have been making the rounds during the 2007 UK festival circuit like The Killers, Kasabian, Snow Patrol, The Fratellis, Babyshambles and The Kooks. Even with all of their appearances, though, the festivals keep selling out. It’s good to see that live music is still selling tickets during these days of low CD sales.

Iggy and The Stooges are even going to be there – which should be one to watch after what happened at Glastonbury. I wonder if people will be invited on the stage for some chaos at the V Festival?

As always, it’s great to see Guillemots included on the lineup. They’re scheduled to play on the Channel 4 stage and The Coral – one of my new “bands to watch” is also playing on that stage but on opposite days. Foo Fighters I’m sure will put on a great show. Jet would be a cool band to see and Primal Scream and Happy Mondays fans will be treated as well.

Interesting to see Sinead O’Connor sandwiched in between Dizzee Rascal and Beverley Knight.

The popular and often unpredictable singer Amy Winehouse has sold out her night for the Summer Series concert at Somerset House in London, scheduled for July 20th 2007. Kasabian has also sold out their night, July 13th.

I wonder how the rest of the bands’ tickets will sell. At the time of this writing, there are still tickets available for these nights: 12 July: Mogwai, 14 July: Bert Jansch with Beth Orton and Bernard Butler, 15 July: Guillemots, 16 July: Lily Allen, 17 July: Mika, 18 July: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 19 July: The Roots and 21 July: Hot Chip.

It would be cool if all the nights sold out like Amy Winehouse and Kasabian so far. The Somerset House website has been keeping the concert page updated with the latest ticket availability which is good. There’s also contact information to purchase tickets for the nights that are still open. The Somerset House concerts seem like one of the best music nights out for July. If you have any desire to go, I highly recommend that you get your tickets ASAP!

The Summer Series at Somerset House in London and the annual open air concerts in the courtyard will be taking place Thursday 12 – Saturday 21 July 2007. The lineup includes bands Kasabian, Guillemots, Hot Chip, Mika, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and more.

Somerset House is an 18th century Neoclassical palace and is located between The Strand and the Thames in central London. The idea of going to a live open air event in the courtyard there seems like a nice night out – especially if it’s one of those hot steamy nights in July when the best place to be is outside.

It’s great to see that Guillemots are playing. If you haven’t read the interview already, be sure to check out my interview with Guillemots drummer Greig Stewart. It was interesting to hear about Guillemots’ new studio, what Greig gets up to on a typical day on tour and other fun facts about him and the band.

The dates and bands scheduled to perform at the 2007 Summer Series at Somerset House are as follows:

12 July: Mogwai
13 July: Kasabian
14 July: Bert Jansch with Beth Orton and Bernard Butler
15 July: Guillemots
16 July: Lily Allen
17 July: Mika
18 July: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
19 July: The Roots
20 July: Amy Winehouse
21 July: Hot Chip

*Dates and acts could change. For more information go to the Somerset House Official Website

Support acts will be announced
Tickets range in price and will go on sale through Ticketmaster

I say. After hearing about The Rolling Stones‘ upcoming European tour dates, I thought I’d log onto their website to read more about the tour. What I didn’t expect was to see that not only was an official announcement planned yesterday, but there was an exclusive live tour announcement interview with Mick Jagger (or should that be Sir Mick?). Luckily the webcast has been archived on The Rolling Stones Website and I’m glad that I found it.

What I really liked about the interview was the question answer format. Fans from around Europe had sent in questions to Mick Jagger that were primarily focused on past shows and the Rolling Stones upcoming 2007 European “A Bigger Bang” tour. There was also talk about their headlining slot at the Isle of Wight Festival this June. Their appearance there will be the first UK festival for the Stones since 1976 at Knebworth in Hertfordshire, England.

A fan brought up the fact that the last time The Rolling Stones played on the Isle of Wight was at the Ryde Pavillion in 1964. Mick talked about why the Stones didn’t play the original Isle of Wight Festival dates with artists like Jimi Hendrix and The Who.

It was interesting that Mick Jagger would bring up a certain British female singer not once, not twice but three times during the interview. Who could that be you might wonder? Amy Winehouse. When asked by the host of the interview if there is anyone that he is particularly looking forward to seeing at the Isle of Wight Festival, Mick mentioned Snow Patrol, Amy Winehouse, Muse, Paolo Nutini (who they’ve played shows with) and Fratellis. I’d be pretty happy actually, to be mentioned by Mick Jagger. He also mentioned her name again as an artist he would want to see at the Isle of Wight festival and when asked what songs he’s downloading at the moment, he answered Bloque (sp?), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Larry Williams and once again, Amy Winehouse. What’s up with that?!

Other projects for Mick Jagger include movie productions and an upcoming Martin Scorsese concert film in the works. He’ll also be writing songs while on holiday with family in the Caribbean. Now that sounds like fun. I’ve never written songs in the Caribbean and the time that I was in Jamaica I was too busy looking around to even think about focusing on anything else. But then, I suppose he’s been going there for awhile now and is used to it.

So if you are able to make it to one of The Rolling Stones “A Bigger Bang” shows I would be interested to hear how it goes. I’ve never been fortunate enough to see them play live.
