London’s City Showcase is proud to announce an exclusive performance by platinum selling Australian artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu at the Apple store on London’s Regent Street. This exclusive free performance will be on May 8, 2009 at 7pm.

Blind since birth and blessed with a voice with the power to transfix, Gurrumul has just completed a tour of highly prestigious key concert venues and festivals in Australia and New Zealand. His debut solo album ‘Gurrumul’ was recently released in the UK to positive reviews and is beginning to pick up consistent radio play.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu on amazon.co.uk

As Andy Fyfe of Q magazine astutely surmised ….”his celestial voice and his swelling acoustic songs full of dignity reduce you to tears, aching with the pain of the past and hope for the future…”

Gurrumul sings in Aboriginal languages Galpu, Gumatj, Djambarrpuynu and English. Said to have the voice of an angel and has the ability to synthesize deeply traditional sounds and stories from East Arnhem Land and bring them alive and reach beyond his own culture.

Also Gurrumul will be playing for the first time on UK TV on Later with Jools Holland on May 5th.

“A man of few words, yet his voice can touch the heart and the soul” – Iain Shedden, The Australian

“Do not underestimate the historic importance of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.” – Bruce Elder, The Sydney Morning Herald

“…the Greatest voice this continent has ever recorded…” – Sydney Morning Herald

“His is a sweeping vision of a truly special world – one defined only by the limits of one’s dreaming.” – Santa Barbara Independent

“This is all about the voice, a high, keening instrument of startling beauty.” – Graeme Thomson Word

To kick start the build up to this year’s much anticipated City Showcase, Nitin Sawhney will be doing an exclusive show and masterclass at the Apple Store, Regent Street, London as a precursor to this year’s main event.

The evening will be on 28 February 2009 at 7.30 pm and will include a workshop Q & A with attendees.

City Showcase Director Nanette Rigg says “This will be the first in a special series of City Showcase music events hosted at the store and we are honoured to have such an accomplished and innovative artist as Nitin perform at the first one.”

Nitin Sawhney has worked with artists including Sting, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Brian Eno and Sinead O’Connor to name but a few as well as producing the latest Get Cape. Wear Cape.Fly album for Atlantic records.

He has also scored over 40 films and is one of the most prolific artists of recent years having toured the world over with both his band and orchestras.

Nitin will be performing a selection of songs from his new album and people are advised to get there early as space is limited.

Meanwhile, City Showcase will take place in London on May 7-9th, and intends to shine a light on yet more great emerging artistry as well as give creative and career advice to budding musicians.

City Showcase has a great record of spotting tomorrow’s emerging talent today: Keane, Razorlight, Amy Winehouse, Scouting for Girls and Ironik all performed at the festival before they became the household names we know today.

All shows are free and artists wanting to apply should go to: City Showcase Official Website

Nitin Sawhney on amazon.co.uk

“Even though half the tracks are instrumentals, I feel like I’m writing pop songs,” – Kaki King

Kaki King returns with her fourth album, ‘Dreaming Of Revenge’, after her contributions to Foo Fighters and Tegan & Sara’s latest albums, and having been nominated for a Golden Globe award for “Into The Wild” together with Eddie Vedder. The album is set for release March 11, 2008 through Velour Music Group.

‘Dreaming Of Revenge’ showcases Kaki King’s desire to branch out with songs that feature electric and pedal-steel guitar, horns, and, for the first time, vocals. Produced by Malcolm Burn, a Grammy-Award winning musician and producer who is known for his work with Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel, and Emmylou Harris, ‘Dreaming Of Revenge’ allows us to witness her evolution from acoustic instrumentalist to full-fledged, multi-faceted songwriter.

Previously, her whispery, ethereal voice was mainly used as another element in her sonic arsenal. This time around, King put more effort into both her vocals and the lyrics she wrote for such deeply felt tracks as “Life Being What It Is,” and “2 O’Clock,” which she describes as break-up songs. “The words mean something now,” she says. “They’re actually telling stories.” In 2007, Kaki King branched out into film work, composing original music for several scenes in the Sean Penn-directed film Into The Wild, which also features two of her previously released songs.

“We really concentrated on the melodies. Everything I write tends to be dense and chordal, but this time the idea was to layer the challenging guitar work under very simple, beautiful melodies. I really wanted them to be memorable.” – Kaki King

On Sunday January 20th, 2008 Kaki will be giving New Yorkers an exclusive sneak-peek performance at the Apple Store in SoHo (103 Prince Street) from 3:00-4:00pm.

Don’t miss your chance to see Kaki King live at SXSW!

Tour dates coming soon.
