Jet are set to welcome the arrival of Aussie into Yorkshire by playing outside Headingly Cricket Ground in Leeds in support of the Australian Cricket team.

The traditionally raucous crowds of Headlingly will be able to see JET on Monday 10th August, 2009, 10:30am.

Ashes fever has set in with the 4th Test looking to be the one to prove pivotal in the series with England leading 1-0 after two Tests.

Holler, Wild Rose! returns to CMJ this year as part of The Rebel Group Showcase on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 7:00pm. The showcase will be held at Fontana’s, located at 105 Eldridge St, New York, NY.

Additional artists performing at the CMJ showcase will include, Arms, Pepi Ginsberg, The Lovely Sparrows, Jukebox the Ghost, The Forms and Bottle Up & Go.

To help celebrate CMJ 2008, all attendees will receive a free preview DVD of the forthcoming Holler, Wild Rose! music video, “Marylawn Hair.” The video was directed by Holler, Wild Rose! lead guitarist and NYU Film graduate, Ryan Cheresnick and bassist and Montclair State University film graduate, Scott Vangenderen. The video will be released at the end of October.

Having just been selected as one of five artists featured on the Rhapsody/Pacifico Indie Music Hub page, Backlight Records recording artist Holler, Wild Rose! was recently featured on, “BBC Introducing,” hosted by Tom Robinson on BBC 6 in England as well as “BBC Radio Bristol Introducing,” hosted by Richard Pitt & Gary Smith on BBC Radio Bristol.

The band’s debut album ‘Our Little Hymnal’ was created over two years and released in September of 2007. Featured as a Napster (US) and iTunes Australia Staff Pick on the day of release, the album has gone on to receive significant airplay on over 150 US and Canadian stations including regular spins on stations such as KCRW, WXPN, WBOS, XM Satellite Radio and Bagel Radio. Additionally, ‘Our Little Hymnal’ is also currently being heard on radio stations in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia and The United Kingdom.

Since the album’s release, Holler! has been featured on NPR’s Second Stage, in Performing Songwriter Magazine, as a Sonicbids Spotlight Artist, a CMJ Festival 2007 Artist of the week and Mathieu Schreyer of KCRW selected Our Little Hymnal as one of his top 10 albums of 2007.

Holler Wild Rose!’s song “Marylawn Hair” was featured as part of the FILTER Magazine “Subway Series” Compilation released for CMJ 2007 (alongside artists such as PJ Harvey, Joy Division, Counting Crows and Oslo) and their song “Sun Vines” is included in the 2008 TEVA Anthology Vol. 6 (with Iron & Wine, Nada Surf, Sia and Dave Matthews). Additionally, Holler, Wild Rose! was selected as FILTER Magazine’s March 2008 Undiscovered Band of the Month leading to features on the band on FILTER’s website and in their print magazine.

Performing Songwriter Magazine had this to say about ‘Our Little Hymnal’:

“I don’t recommend doing anything else — such as reading, writing or dusting — when listening to Our Little Hymnal…with a voice somewhere between Jim James, Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley, lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist John Mosloskie leads this exceptional band through dramatic, melodic twists and turns that will keep you staring — yes, staring — at the speaker to catch what will happen next. Imagine if Explosions In the Sky had a lead vocalist, and you’re getting close.”

Jack Rabid of The Big Takeover said:

“Few bands match their wall of guitar, wide-screen wash…one bets it’s awesome live, too.”

New Jersey’s own music paper The Aquarian has heralded the band’s “lush, warm tones” and stated that ‘Our Little Hymnal’ “has enough character to stand out on its own, which is a laudable thing in this genre.”

“Holler, Wild Rose! channel psychedelic energy into powerful, moving shoegaze rock. On their new CD ‘Our Little Hymnal,’ the New Jersey-based group shows their amazing ability to transition smoothly from tranquil, murky moods to explosive moments of release.” – NPR’s Second Stage

Last night I was excited to see that Nicole Atkins was scheduled to play on Later Live…with Jools Holland.

A few months ago I was lucky to have had the opportunity to interview Nicole Atkins over the phone – and then the next day to watch her play an intimate show at the Soho Review Bar in London. I was able to see first hand what a talent she was and knew then that she had the ‘full package’ to reach out to many, many more people – with her excellent songs, charming stage presence and determination.

Originally from Neptune, New Jersey and having toured across the US, making appearances on shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien and David Letterman, Nicole is probably more known in the States than here in England, however, after her strong performance last night on Jools Holland (her British television debut), I’m sure she’s gained even more fans from across the pond.

Other acts included:

Kings of Leon (”Sex On Fire”); when VV Brown came on, at first I wasn’t quite sure what to think, but then as the song went on (”Crying Blood”), her quirky soulful/punk grew on me and now I’ll be interested to hear more about her; Sway featuring Lemar (”Saturday Night Hustle”); and the First Lady of France Carla Bruni was interviewed by a flirtatious Jools Holland and then later was on with her “Tu Es Ma Came” single. It’s strange seeing a President’s wife hanging out with musicians and then singing live with a band…a first for me anyway. Has this ever happened before? With any other country’s First Lady?!

Nicole Atkins performed her dreamy pop single, “Maybe Tonight” off of debut album, ‘Neptune City’ and then Metallica closed the 30 minute night of varied music with their single, “The Day That Never Comes”. All members ended up taking solos, which was interesting on live TV, coming dangerously close to running over time. Now that’s Rock ‘n’ Roll…BBC style!

Will the Dragons dance with their babies tonight?

On September 8th, 2008, we see the last in the series of the hugely popular and painstakingly addictive Dragon’s Den. Will Mancunian Naomi Timperley and her American business partner Andy Blackman-Hurwitz be able to melt the hearts of the fiery Dragons with their innovative and successful concept Baby Loves Disco? With 16 children between them you’d think Theo, Duncan and Peter would be uber interested. Tune in to BBC Two on 8th September @ 9pm to find out!

Baby Loves Disco is a phenomenon taking the UK by storm; it’s a real disco in a real club but especially for your little ones.

Baby Loves Disco is the afternoon dance party for little kids (6 months to 8 years).

And (especially) their parents, featuring real DJs spinning tunes guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving. The latest and most unlikely craze was started in the US, and is well established in over 30 cities. It is also going global having recently launched in Japan, Israel and Poland.

To celebrate the continuing success of the brand, Universal Music TV is set to release ‘Baby Loves Disco – The Album’ on October 13th, 2008.

The three CD disco in a box features non stop club classics plus some trendy young and fresh tracks thrown in to keep you on your toes. This is not just any disco compilation because it’s been specially formulated for the parents of young children. We all know how important music is to our little ones and let’s face it, is important to the grown ups as well.

The band’s fourth album, which was released on 17 March, 2008, has received rave reviews and they are the only band in history to get 9/10 four times in the NME.

And the band intend to give the record a full live outing, as Guy Garvey explained to 6 Music: “I think the way we are gonna do it is we’re gonna tour the UK and the States and Europe.

“And then when we’ve done that, we’re gonna play the whole album as a show. I’m not sure where yet but a couple of mayor cities per country perhaps but eventually we’ll play the whole of the album as a continual show.”

B.B. King is universally recognized as the leading exponent of modern blues. A fourteen time Grammy winner, he has received virtually every music award, including the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 1987. He is one of the greatest, most influential blues guitar stylists, composers and singers of the 20th century and is without a doubt the single most important electric guitarist of the last half century, ranked 3rd in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

‘B.B. King – Live At The BBC’, is a wonderful collection that compiles the best of B.B. King’s BBC recordings onto one CD for the very first time and includes some of his biggest hits, such as “Paying the Cost to Be the Boss” and “The Thrill Is Gone” as well as “When Love Comes To Town”, the duet with U2 that took him to the top of the UK charts and gave him his first MTV exposure.

Featuring highlights from his 3 finest UK performances alongside a session recording made in the BBC’s studios, this CD offers an incredible snapshot of an artist at the peak of his career performing some of his greatest material.

One of the greatest popular musicians Britain has ever produced, Jack Bruce is a supremely talented instrumentalist and vocalist whose pioneering bass playing style has influenced a generation of bassists. He’s also the possessor of one of the most powerful voices in modern music and a composer of some of the most original and influential music of the past forty years.

Jack Bruce ‘Spirit – Live At The BBC 1971-1978′ is set for UK release April 7th, 2008 on Polydor Records. This 3 disc set spans his trips to the BBC between 1971 – 1978 and contains the best of his post Cream BBC recordings. Sessions, concerts and Old Grey Whistle Test broadcasts combined in a beautifully packaged box set containing rare photos and extensive liner notes.

It features some of Jack’s finest compositions such as “Folksong”, “You Burned the Tables On Me”, “Can You Follow?”, “Smiles and Grins” and “Morning Story” alongside new arrangements of Cream favourites such as “We’re Going Wrong” and “Born Under A Bad Sign”. It spans the period during which Jack recorded the albums ‘Harmony Row’ (1971), ‘Out Of The Storm’ (1974) and ‘How’s Tricks’ (1977).

These BBC recordings are from the following sources:

On September 18th, 1971 the newly formed Jack Bruce Band recorded a very memorable ‘In Concert’ performance in front of an invited audience at the BBC Paris Theatre in Lower Regent Street. The line-up of the band was old-cohort, Graham Bond on organ and saxophone, Chris Spedding on guitar, John Marshall on drums and Art Themen on sax. Aside from performing excellent renditions of “You Burned the Tables on Me”, “Smiles and Grins”, “Folk Song” and “A Letter of Thanks” from Harmony Row, the band performed a new arrangement of the Cream classic “We’re Going Wrong” (originally featured on the album Disraeli Gears), and “The Clearout” from 1969’s ‘Songs for a Tailor’. The set also made reference to Jack’s earlier musical past by including “Have You Ever Loved a Woman”, featuring Graham Bond on lead vocals and often performed with the Graham Bond Organisation.

Prior to this, Jack joined drummer Jon Hiseman and saxophonist John Surman to record a session for BBC Radio Three’s Jazz in Britain series on the 10th August 1971. This session featured a number of specially recorded works, including Jack’s “Gone”, “Clearway” and the earliest recording of a piece that would feature as part of Jack’s live set both with his own band and with West, Bruce and Laing – the excellent “Powerhouse Sod”.

By the time 1974’s Out of the Storm had been released Jack Bruce was in the throws of forming a new band. Recruiting guitarist Mick Taylor (who had recently left the Rolling Stones), keyboard players Carla Bley (on whose Escalator Over the Hill album Jack guested), Ronnie Leahy and drummer Bruce Gary this line-up became the new Jack Bruce Band.

Pleased with the distinctly different feel the band had given to Jack Bruce’s music, the band played an extensive European tour in June 1975. They also recorded a special set for BBC 2’s The Old Grey Whistle Test on June 6th. Older material such as “Smiles and Grins”, “Morning Story” and “Can You Follow” was performed alongside “Peaces of Mind” and “One” from ‘Out of the Storm’ and a version of the Tony Williams composition, “Spirit”.

In the late summer of 1976 a new incarnation of the Jack Bruce Band was formed with Hughie Burns on guitar, Tony Hymas on keyboards and Simon Phillips on drums and this band began work on the album ‘How’s Tricks’. Released in March 1977 the album heralded further touring activity, preceded by the recording of another ‘In Concert’ programme for BBC Radio One at the Paris Theatre on 14th April 1977. This excellent set saw new material such as “Madhouse”, “Time”, “Baby Jane”, “Something to Live For”, “Lost Inside a Song”, “How’s Tricks” and a reworked “Without a Word” performed alongside older material such as “Born Under a Band Sign” (recorded by Cream for the album ‘Wheels of Fire’).

The final session here saw Jack Bruce reunited with Jon Hiseman and John Surman to record a new session for BBC Radio Three in June 1978 for the programme ‘At the Third Stroke’, part of the Jazz in Britain series. Three improvisational works were recorded, “Fifteen Minutes Past Three”, “Ten to Four” and “Twenty Past Four”, and the session was an interesting musical exercise.

Andy Abraham was voted in as winner on BBC’s Eurovision: Your Decision Saturday night and is now set to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. The show will take place in Belgrade, Serbia.

With the three judge panel consisting of John Barrowman, Carrie Grant and Terry Wogan, it was a close call for Andy. Terry Wogan was the only judge to vote for Andy to stay in for the public vote, as a wild card.

Andy’s soulful performance of his song, “Even If”, written by Andy Abraham, Andy Watkins and Paul Wilson, was enough to convince the public to vote for him as the winner to go on to the Eurovision 2008 final.

Other contestants included ex-EastEnders star Michelle Gayle, Simona Armstrong, Rob McVeigh, LoveShy and The Revelations.

Andy Abraham is best known in the UK as a former contestant on X Factor 2005. With memorable appearances that included a stand out performance of “Me and Mrs. Jones”, the former bin man was runner up to winner Shayne Ward.

Since the X Factor, Andy has released two studio albums, with a third on it’s way, set to include the single, “Even If”.

I just watched a funny interview on the BBC news. Classical violinist David Garrett must have a pretty good PR person working for him, because I think this was the first time that I’ve seen a musician play in the studio, on the news. Plus – I hadn’t heard of him until today, and the the story that got him there was that he fell down a flight of stairs onto his priceless Stradivarius violin, that actually cost him $1,000,000, and now the repair bill will be for around £60,000.

He was also able to get a plug in for his upcoming album, ‘Virtuoso’, which is released in March, and that he’s currently on tour. Pretty clever stuff – all because of his fall, a cracked Stradivarious and of course, the fact that he’s an incredible performer. I’m sure he’ll gain many new fans from this, including me.

The BBC interview was funny because the female news reader was all in a tither as David played his violin, and the other news reader, a man, was making fun of her. She had noted Garrett was once a model (to supplement his student income) and that people call him the David Beckham of the violin…which is a bit silly. He is very nice looking though – and he plays a great violin! The violin that he was playing in the studio was another Stradivarius that was brought over from Milan so that he can continue his tour. Hopefully he’ll keep that one intact.

David Garrett has been playing the violin since a very young age, and was known as a child prodigy.

His new album, ‘Virtuoso’ is set for release March 2008.

It’s been a slow start this morning, after staying up until well past three in the morning here in England, watching the Patriots lose the Super Bowl. Boooo. I was so disappointed with the loss, I wondered why I bothered to stay up at all. Now I’m paying for it today. Not only that – I somehow managed to talk two other people into staying up and watching the game with me – and now they’re paying for it too, I owe them big time – and it wasn’t even worth it.

As far as the half-time show went, it was certainly a safe bet having Tom Petty on as the act. As expected, the band sounded good and played through a tame set of familiar hits like “American Girl”, “I Won’t Back Down”, “Free Falling” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream”. We were surprised to see the guitar player pull out the double necked electric at one point – but that’s about as risque as it got.

There was news a few days ago that Mark Oliver Everett – or “E” as he’s known – from the Eels was going to put on a one second ad during the Super Bowl for their upcoming album, ‘Useless Trinkets’. The ad was supposed to be of E saying the first letter of the new album title – the letter “U” and would have been the shortest TV ad ever used during the Super Bowl, at the cost of a mere $100,000.

I’ve just found out that it didn’t air, and E has stated, “In the end we were told that the NFL would have to find 29 other advertisers to buy 1 second spots to fill a standard 30 second advertising slot and that they do not sell advertising time by the second. They also noted that a rapid fire 30 second segment of thirty 1 second commercials could cause people with certain medical conditions to have seizures and that it was against network regulations.”

That’s too bad. The good thing, though, is that you can still see a video of the 1 second ad here, and a 5 second version here.

We were watching the game on the BBC in England, so this was the first time that I’ve ever watched the Super Bowl with no ads. Not even British ads this year, which was great. Especially since a lot of people in England don’t like watching the NFL because of all the ads.

Anyway, congrats to the NY Giants fans – it was a close game. Condolences go out to my fellow Pats fans!

Rhino UK is proud to present a fascinating 39 track, 2 CD set of highlights from the groundbreaking BBC 2 TV music show Later…with Jools Holland – the selections drawn from more recent series of the long running show. ‘Later…Live with Jools Holland’ is set for UK release January 28th, 2008.

The 2 CDS reflect Later…with Jools Holland’s mix of established and new acts drawn from every walk of musical life. The full track listing is below but featured artists include Amy Winehouse, Kasabian, Lily Allen, The White Stripes with Jools himself, Muse and Kings Of Leon rubbing shoulders with the more upcoming likes of King Creosote, Adele, Duffy and Seasick Steve.

Later…with Jools Holland has been the most sought after TV outlet for both stellar names and relative unknowns (many of whom have gone on to much bigger things) since it was first broadcast in 1992. 25 of the 39 acts on this CD made their TV debut on Later and 13 of the tracks featured are debut performances anywhere in the world including those by Mika, Adele, Duffy, The Fratellis, Seasick Steve and Kate Nash.

Later…recently completed it’s 30th series and more than a thousand artists have performed well over 2,500 songs during the shows’ first 15 years. Rhino’s 2 CD set is released the week that Later…celebrates its 200th show on Friday February 1st, 2008 with guests including Radiohead, Cat Power and Dionne Warwick.

The program has always presented a unique blend of acts on each show and has a reputation that always brings the best, often presenting the artist in a novel setting – Mika here performing solo, Gnarls Barkley with their string section, Kano and Damon Albarn. This is a remarkable collection of solo artists and bands, reflecting a phenomenal mix of music styles. Where else are you likely to hear James Blunt, The Flaming Lips, Kaiser Chiefs, Jose Gonzales and Green Day under one rafter-rattling roof?

One of the most successful hip-hop acts to emerge from the UK, Stereo MCs’ line-up revolved around three women and three men: Rob Birch (vocals), Nick ‘The Head’ Hallam (synths/computers/scratching) Owen If (percussion) plus Cath Coffey, Andrea Bedassie and Verona David (backing vocals).

Hailing from Nottingham, where they had been friends since the age of six, Rob Birch and Nick Hallam originally formed a rock duo there called Dogman And Head, before moving to London in 1985 when they were both 17 years old. Once in London they started recording rap music and, together with John Baker and DJ Richie Rich, formed the Gee Street label as a means of promoting their music. Gee Street soon signed a distribution deal with the New York-based 4th & Broadway label and a series of singles followed before Stereo MCs’ debut album 33, 45, 78 surfaced in 1989. This was followed by the 1990 album ‘Supernatural’ and the group’s 1991 single “Elevate My Mind” gave them a US Top 40 hit that year, which was a first for a UK hip-hop outfit.

Although their first two albums had been well received it was their powerful third album, ‘Connected’, which really brought them serious recognition when it crashed into the album charts in 1992. When the single to the title track and the brilliantly rhythmic “Step It Up” were released, the Stereo MCs finally gained the wider audience that they truly deserved. In 1994 the Stereo MCs picked up the awards Best Album for ‘Connected’ and for Best Group at the BRITs. ‘Connected’ was also short listed for a Mercury Prize.

This 20 track disc features the best of their studio recordings and concerts that were recorded for and broadcast by the BBC and charts their rise to multi-platinum album sellers. All of the tracks here were hand picked by the group and feature exclusive versions of some of their biggest hits. This is a wonderful alternative ‘best of’ and, just as they are about to release their latest album, it serves as a fantastic reminder of Stereo MCs at their commercial peak. Stereo MCs Live at the BBC is set for UK release January 28th, 2008.

Astonishingly, Maria McKee was only 19 when she penned Feargal Sharkey’s 1985 UK number one hit “A Good Heart”. In 1989 she released her debut solo album and in 1990 Maria McKee held the number one spot in the UK charts for four weeks with “Show Me Heaven”, recorded for the soundtrack to the film Days Of Thunder. The song became one of the best selling singles of that year throughout Europe. Maria no longer performs this track live so it’s wonderful that one of her rare live performances of that song is included here on this superb compilation.

The tracks featured on Maria McKee – Live at the BBC CD are taken from her performances at Manchester University in 1991 and Cambridge Junction in 1993, at the peak of her commercial success. The set contains some of her best known performances alongside the Lone Justice hits and some wonderful cover versions.
