Sweeten up this week’s playlist with The Go! Team’s remix of Black Moth Super Rainbow’s “Twin of Myself,” from their new album ‘Eating Us’ (out now on Graveface Records).

The original is a hazy, electro-pop daydream that Pitchfork called “positively radiant – a patiently gleaming, summery jam,” but once The Go! Team sequence their big beats, harmonicas, and flute harmonies over looping samples of Tobacco’s vocoder chorus and floating synth melodies, the song becomes a highly danceable example of the British collective’s “unhinged, knowingly daft pop fun.” (NME)

It sounds like Brighton’s The Go! Team had a blast remixing “Twin of Myself” – here’s the addictive rendition, in which they layer their signature handclaps, harmonicas and big beats over BMSR’s otherworldly vocoder chorus and floating synths:

Black Moth Super Rainbow are no strangers to unhinged fun: over the weekend, Tobacco took a break from Black Moth Super Rainbow’s extensive touring schedule to perform solo at Bonnaroo’s Troo Music Lounge. He invited some of his “F***** Up Friends” (a furry, man-faced beast and an old man in hospital scrubs with a dead fetus accessory) onstage to amuse audiences – they’ve been spotted at BMSR’s recent live shows as well. Rolling Stone reported that the set was “an awesomely bizarre spectacle that was part ’90s rave, part art show” and awarded him with the “Best-set-of-the-night” award for Thursday.

East Coast fans won’t want to miss the bizarre awesomeness as Black Moth Super Rainbow continues the ‘Eating Us’ tour June 19, 2009 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The’ve also added new headlining dates throughout July and early August.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s psych-pop outfit “poised to break out this year” (Rolling Stone) Black Moth Super Rainbow have a special treat for Record Store Day vinyl aficionados.

On April 18, 2009, Graveface Records will release the ‘Born On A Day’ 7-inch, which comes with two versions of the eerie, swirling psychedelic first single “Born on a Day the Sun Didn’t Rise” from their forthcoming album ‘Eating Us’ (Graveface 5/26) on 7-inch orange/red vinyl in a limited edition of just 500 copies.

Side A is the album version, and Side B is a soft, stripped-down version recorded with a banjo and sticky electro beats, showcasing the before and after entailed in recording their first studio album with acclaimed producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) at Tarbox Road Studios. Graveface is also offering “Born On A Day the Sun Didn’t Rise” as an MP3 download for fans to hear the fully fleshed-out BMSR.

Download “Born On A Day the Sun Didn’t Rise” MP3

Fridmann takes Black Moth Super Rainbow’s adventurous sound to new sonic heights by replacing the spliced electro beats used in their previous recordings with D.Kyler’s booming, hip-hop styled live drums, cranking up the undulating bass guitar to blend seamlessly with the crunchy beats, and making frontman Tobacco’s vocoder lush and up front, creating a creepy and angelic sound that bridges human voice and machine. Fridmann keeps the candy-coated sticky textures created with vintage synths, guitars and freaked-out analog effects for which the group has become known and loved.

‘Eating Us’ follows the critically praised 2007 ‘Dandelion Gum’ (Graveface). The group Blender described as “the missing link between Daft Punk’s cosmic kitsch and the wistful bliss of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever” is poised to make a major impression on new fans in 2009.

Graveface Records has set up a reserve list on their website where fans can sign up to ensure they receive the full deluxe CD of ‘Eating Us,’ featuring a 16-page art booklet and hairy summer jewel case jacket limited to 2,000 copies. Sign up here.

As previously announced, Black Moth Super Rainbow, who have previously toured with Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock, will take their cocktail of visual and aural oddness on the road this summer supporting ‘Eating Us.’ Daydreamers School of Seven Bells co-headline.

“One glorious buzz” — The New York Times

“Bringing to mind jittery Claymation flowers growing and disintegrating on a TV screen. . . This may be spacey pop perfection, but more importantly, it creates a singular sonic microcosm that recalls the ineffable weirdness of childhood.” – Village Voice

“Black Moth Super Rainbow is effective because it isn’t afraid to let songs float off like brightly colored balloons.” — The Onion’s A.V. Club

On May 5, 2009, Waxploitation Artists will release ‘Causes 2′, the second album in the label’s ongoing benefit series for Darfur. 100% of the profits from the release go to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Human Rights Watch and Oxfam America.

The video for ‘Causes 2′ can be seen on the Waxploitation YouTube channel and a Causes MySpace page has been created at www.myspace.com/causes.

The album includes rare and exclusive songs from some of the most compelling artists in the indie and alternative worlds: Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Decemberists, Devendra Banhart, Diplo, Federico Aubele, Gnarls Barkley, LCD Soundsystem, My Morning Jacket, Matthew Dear, Mum, Neon Neon, Richard Swift, RJD2, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, as well as a contribution from Adult Swim’s Tim & Eric.

“It’s easy for fatigue to set in when a crisis goes on for a number of years, but no one has given up hope that things can change for the better in Darfur” says Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi, who executive produced the album. “There are untold numbers of people committed to changing the outcome. It takes humanitarian assistance, tenacity and political will.”

‘Causes 1′ was released in 2007 to great acclaim. The album, which hit #35 on the iTunes Album Chart and reached #46 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart, includes contributions from Animal Collective, The Black Keys, Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Cure, The Shins, Spoon and Teargas & Plateglass to name a few.

With the release of ‘F***ed Up Friends’ on the immediate horizon, an unlikely supporter has swooped in to offer help for beat-pysch sideshow Tobacco.

Indeed, the star of the Truth anti-smoking ads, Derrick Beckles, has apparently gone pro-Tobacco. Surprising or not (if you’ve caught his work at Street Boners and TV Carnage, probably not), Beckles has created an absurdly hillarious multi-part video series in support of Tobacco and the forthcoming ‘F***ed Up Friends’, due October 14th, 2008 via Anticon.

Check out the first clip in the series below, which premiered over on Beckles’ site, and keep an eye out for more to follow over the coming weeks.

For the uninitiated, ‘F***ed Up Friends’ is the solo debut from one half of analog-adoring space psychsters Black Moth Super Rainbow, whose critical smash ‘Dandelion Gum’ was released last year. Tobacco’s debut bristles with the same life, but flirts with even more sinister undercurrents and far out textures. Recently, the Hood Internet gave the album the serious mash up treatment, taking sections of more than a half dozen album tracks and turned them into a seamless mix featuring catalog highlights from Aesop Rock, who appears on the single, “Dirt.”

You know Tobacco well. As a member of the genre-flaying space-collagists Black Moth Super Rainbow, he masterminded one of last year’s finest records, ‘Dandelion Gum’. But under the Tobacco banner, the work this pastiche-adoring Pennsylvanian creates is darker, starker and altogether more badass, filled with jagged beats, glowing melodies and pronounced tension.

His debut, ‘F***ed Up Friends’, is due October 14th, 2008 via Anticon Records, and has already won a boatload of praise from the likes of XLR8R, who’re currently featuring a Tobacco-helmed podcast entitled “Songs To Get Killed In The Woods To,” and Pitchfork, who recently premiered the video for “Street Trash,” available below.

Watch “Street Trash” video:

As always, Tobacco recorded ‘F***ed Up Friends’ using analog synths and tape machines, which gives his work a timeless distance from digital pop music at large. Much of the album is instrumental, save for a few electronically-mutilated vocals, and a welcomed turn from San Fran emcee Aesop Rock, who appears on the album-standout “Dirt,” which can be heard below.

Listen: Tobacco – “Dirt” (featuring Aesop Rock):

With a new album ready for release this June, on Teepee Records, Hopewell are once again hitting the road. Catch them as they head to SXSW with Graveface Records’ Black Moth Super Rainbow. Since the release of Hopewell and The Birds of Appetite, Hopewell have logged over 200 shows, crisscrossed the US, and received rave reviews from the most stoic of journalists. Notable appearances include SXSW, CMJ, Noise Pop Festival and tours with the Black Angels, Mark Gardner, the High Dials and the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

At age 19, Hopewell’s founder/lead singer, Jason Russo found himself traversing the world with the now legendary Mercury Rev. Following Revs breakthrough record Deserter’s Songs, Russo struck out on his own to focus on Hopewell, described by NME as: “Breathtaking, bombastic psychedelic rock with a dark turbulence at it’s heart; the two elements tugging at each other until a music that is both disquietingly beautiful and emotionally powerful is all that remains.”

Catch Hopewell on tour:
3/14 – SXSW Enchanted Forrest w/ Goldrush & Spindrift
3/15 SXSW – Moonshine – HNOB & Hunnypot day party w/ Goldrush & The Heights
3/15 – SXSW -Birds Barbershop day party w/ Rosebuds, Comas, Bishop Allen & 1986
3/16 – SXSW – Bella Blue Boutique -Peek-A-Boo Records/Graveface Records day party w/ Black Moth & Experimental Aircraft
3/16 – SXSW – Club One 15 – Greenroom Showcase 3/18 – (Dallas, TX) Darkside Lounge w/ Black Moth Super Rainbow
3/20 – (Asheville, NC) w/ The Hellsayers
3/23 – (New York, NY) Union Hall w/ Goldrush & Cat Martin

What the Critics are Saying:

“Hopewell add some hangover-hazy honky-tonk grit to their spacey sprawl, the results are uniquely out of this world.” – Timothy Gunatilaka – Entertainment Weekly

“With mesmerizing singer Jason Russo at the mic, the band culls the glam-rock sound of Bowie and the croon-wave of the Cure.” – New York Post

http://www.hopewell.tv/

http://www.blackmothsuperrainbow.com/

– Gorgeous PR
