Graham Nash’s tenor is among rock’s most recognizable, and as resonant as his voice of conscience as a songwriter. He started The Hollies with his childhood friend Allan Clarke in 1961, before embarking on a lifelong musical journey, solo and with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young.

A day after his birthday, Rhino celebrates Graham Nash’s career (so far) with Reflections, a three-CD boxed set that encompasses 40 years of memorable music with 64 songs; half of which are unreleased mixes, alternate versions and unissued tracks.

This deluxe package features a 150-page booklet with 75 classic and unseen photos and track notes by Graham Nash.

The collection will be available February 2, 2009 from Rhino Records – www.rhino.co.uk.

Arranged chronologically, Reflections spans Graham Nash’s recordings from 1967 to 2007, starting with a trio of singles he released with The Hollies in 1967: “On A Carousel”, “Carrie Anne” and “King Midas In Reverse”.

Nash left the group a year later, joining with Crosby and Stills to record the trio’s self-titled album, which earned them the Grammy® for “Best New Artist.” Reflections gathers several songs from that album-and its follow-up, released a few months later with the addition of Neil Young – including “Pre-Road Downs”, “Marrakesh Express”, “Our House” and “Teach Your Children”.

The set also includes tracks from the group’s other albums: “Just A Song Before I Go”, “Wasted On The Way” and “Heartland”.

Over the years, Crosby and Nash have recorded a number of albums as a duo. Reflections features several gems from those collaborations with “Immigration Man”, “To The Last Whale”, “Jesus Of Rio” and more.

The collection also brings together several classics from Nash’s four solo albums, ranging from the politically-charged (”Military Madness” and “Chicago” / “We Can Change The World”) to the emotionally raw (”Simple Man” and “Sleep Song”) and the socially conscious (”Barrel Of Pain” and “Chippin’ Away”.)

Reflections spotlights 32 songs with different mixes and alternate versions that have never been released. Among the highlights is Nash’s solo acoustic demo of “Right Between The Eyes”. Recorded during the Déjà Vu sessions, a live version of the track popped up in 1971 on a CSN&Y live album. The compilation contains six unreleased tracks, including “Water From The Moon”, “Try To Find Me” and “In Your Name”, a song he recorded in 2007.

Wednesday Morning, 3AM (1964)

Simon and Garfunkel’s debut album was initially unsuccessful but with their ascendancy to fame, it wasn’t long before their fans harked back to this early work. With songs such as Sound of Silence, Bleeker Street, Wednesday Morning 3AM this is a debut which clearly shows the promise Paul Simon’s songwriting. The pair’s distinctive 2-part harmony arrangements lit the way for the huge success they had with later material.

Sound Of Silence (1966)

Though it was their second album, Sounds of Silence was the record that introduced Simon & Garfunkel to the world on a large scale. When the original, acoustic version of the title tune was given a rock sheen here, folk-rock was born! This essentially catapulted the duo to superstardom. The songs here follow in that electrified direction for the most part, with the widescreen irony of Blessed buoyed by plangent guitar and drums, and the paranoid Somewhere They Can’t Find Me pushed to neurotic extremes by an insistent rhythm section.

Sounds of Silence marked the introduction proper of Simon as sensitive song poet: intellectual, and poetic, making him the perfect 60s folk-pop idol. From the romantic melodrama of Kathy’s Song to the anthem of alienation I Am a Rock, Sounds of Silence was the ultimate sonic portrait of the artist as a young man. It is this style of music which undoubtedly inspired other artists in years to come such as Morrissey.

Tracklisting:

1. Sound Of Silence
3. Blessed
13. Barbriallen
14. Rose Of Aberdeen
15. Roving Gambler

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966)

From the opening finely-woven tapestry, Scarborough Fair/Canticle, to the closing wake-up call, 7 O’Clock News/Silent Night, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel present a powerful collection of songs that was to be the new standard in contemporary rock. These harmonies were not those of the fun-loving Beach Boys, and the two New Yorkers weren’t singing about girls in bikinis. They sang about women who read Emily Dickinson. Intellectual folk-based rock flourished in this classic collection written by the poet-of-the-moment, Paul Simon. The chemistry between Paul’s warm, low tenor and Art’s high, airy, tenor was an unrivalled mix, creating a precise harmonic exchange that lent itself perfectly to the well-crafted songs. The intricate arrangement of Scarborough Fair is a prime example of this winning formula.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme contains songs that have since become part of the American musical lexicon. Songs like Patterns signalled that there was now an articulate elite that was changing the sound of the musical landscape. The revolution in the streets and campuses was making its way on to radio airwaves and thence into people’s homes. But as heavy as they were politically and intellectually, the duo could still offer up an infectious, light-hearted ditty like The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy).

Tracklisting:

1. Scarborough Fair/Canticle
2. Patterns
3. Cloudy
4. Homeward Bound
5. Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine
10. For Emily Whenever I May Find Her
11. Poem On The Underground Wall
12. 7 O’clock News/Silent Night
13. Patterns
14. Poem On The Underground Wall

Bookends (1968)

Simon & Garfunkel’s first consistently excellent album, Bookends is a brief (12 songs in less than 30 minutes) but beautiful song cycle. It manages to sum up all of Paul Simons themes of alienation and identity in a newly orchestrated and elegant style far removed from the skeletal folk-rock of their earlier albums. The entire first half, bracketed by the lovely Bookends Theme, has a suite-like feel even though it encompasses songs as varied as the chaotic Save the Life of My Child and the subtle acoustic reverie Overs.

The second half is the closest Simon & Garfunkel ever came to rock & roll, featuring not only the classics Mrs. Robinson and Hazy Shade of Winter, but the lesser-known, quirky gems such as Fakin’ It and Punky’s Dilemma. An eclectic and multi-dimensional album, Bookends is often considered to be Simon & Garfunkel’s masterpiece.

Tracklisting:

1. Bookends Theme
2. Save The Life Of My Child
3. America
4. Overs
5. Voice Of Old People
6. Old Friends
9. Punky’s Dilemma
10. Mrs Robinson
11. Hazy Shade Of Winter
12. At The Zoo
13. You Don’t Know Where Your Interest Lies
14. Old Friends

Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970)

After half a decade of pop superstardom, America’s favourite folk-rock duo were just about ready to go their separate ways but not before releasing perhaps their most famous song to date. Possibly S&G’s most diverse album, Bridge Over Troubled Water firmly established them as creators of pop standards on a par with Irving Berlin or Johnny Mercer. That title tune alone places them in the pop hall of fame forever.

The story obviously doesn’t stop there. Foreshadowing Simon’s solo work, the jubilant love song Cecilia and the poignant, yearning El Condor Pasa both turn to the traditions of other cultures for musical inspiration. The highly metaphorical The Boxer is the only real throwback to Simon’s more self-conscious early work. The transcendent production of The Only Living Boy in New York puts a pop sheen on an early example of Simon’s nascent Randy Newman influence. A great way to say goodbye.

Tracklisting:

1. Bridge over troubled water
2. El condor pasa
3. Cecilia
4. Keep the customer satisfied
5. So long Frank Lloyd Wright
6. Boxer
7. Baby driver
8. Only living boy in New York
9. Why don’t you write me
10. Bye bye love
11. Song for the asking

Live in Central Park DVD

You can almost hear Simon & Garfunkel begin to like each other again on this now-legendary set. On September 19, 1981, the duo reunited for just the second time since their initial break-up and revealed a camaraderie that had apparently vanished years earlier. Not only do they reprise their shared hits, they also work in a few of Paul Simon’s solo gems and a couple of telling covers, one from the Everley Brothers and one from Chuck Berry. The band includes the best session men around. By the time they get to the sincerity of Old Friends and the joy of The 59th Street Bridge Song, you sense a relationship fully repaired.

Tracklisting:

1. Mrs. Robinson
2. Homeward Bound
3. America
4. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
5. Scarborough Fair
6. April Come She Will
7. Wake Up Little Susie
8. Still Crazy After All These Years
9. American Tune
10. Late In The Evening
11. Slip Slidin’ Away
12. A Heart In New York
13. Medley: Kodachrome / Maybelline
14. Bridge Over Troubled Water
15. Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover
16. The Boxer
20. The Sounds Of Silence
21. Late In The Evening

Toto: The Collection – 7 Disc Boxset is set for release 17th March, 2008.

This beautifully packaged collection includes Toto’s first seven albums plus a fantastic live DVD. These are the albums which shaped their distinctive sound and image, gaining them a loyal legion of die hard fans.

The Grammy award-winning band were founded in 1976 by some of the most popular and experienced session musicians of the era. They were even described by Eddie Van Halen as “collectively the best musicians on the planet”. The public obviously agreed – the group has sold over 30 million albums to date.

This collection is perfect for those who want to discover the magic of Toto as well as being a collector’s item for established fans.

Album Info:

Toto

This was the self titled debut album that launched Toto into massive commercial success, setting the standard for the band throughout the 1980s when they went on to become one of the biggest selling groups of their era.

The album spawned hit single “Hold The Line” as well as Georgy Porgy and “I’ll Supply The Love”. The band was nominated for a Grammy award for Best New Artist and shortly thereafter, in early 1979, they embarked on their first American tour in support of the debut album.

Hydra

The successful follow up album to Toto was released in 1979. It featured the hit single “99″, which was inspired by George Lucas’ cult film THX 1138. This song went on to become one of the band’s most popular numbers. Other singles include “St George And The Dragon” and “All Us Boys”.

The band also released a promotional video for the album’s title track, though the song was never released as a single.

Turn Back

Turn back was probably the most experimental of their albums. It was a new direction for the group and one which prompted strong responses from critics both positive and negative. The record is very guitar heavy and features less keyboards than their previous two records.

Toto IV

Toto were not a band to rest on their laurels. In 1982 they released their most successful albums to date. In fact, Toto IV became one of the most commercially successful records of the entire decade. The massive hit singles massive “Africa” and “Rosanna” are both on this album.

Toto IV dominated the charts throughout the world, bringing the band to new audiences. Africa topped the American charts in February of 1983 and was a constant presence on radios across the globe. However, it was “Rosanna” that earned the band multiple Grammy nominations.

The album was awarded 6 Grammy Awards including Record Of The Year for “Rosanna”, Album Of The Year for Toto IV, and Producer Of The Year. In the video for “Rosanna”, a young Patrick Swayze can be seen as one of the dancers, and a young Cynthia Rhodes can be seen as the lead dancer.

Isolation

The follow up record to Toto IV was also a commercial success, achieving gold status. This was the first album to feature new lead singer Fergie Frederiksen. Isolation features fantastic singles “Stranger In Town” and “How Does It Feel”.

Fahrenheight

This album was recorded with another new singer, Joseph Williams. It featured the popular single “I’ll be Over You” with a guest appearance from none other than Miles Davis. It was well known that Miles was a big fan of the group and their music. Also on this album is “Could This Be Love”.

Seventh One

1988, Toto released their next album The Seventh One (Quite literally, Toto’s 7th album) which featured Jon Anderson of Yes on its single, “Stop Loving You”. The record’s other single, “Pamela” also became very popular.

The Seventh One, became the band’s most successful release since Toto IV.

Greatest Hits Live And More (DVD)

This fantastic DVD, originally released in 2002, features Toto at their best live on stage.

To celebrate Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth’s 80th Birthdays, Salvo Records announces the definitive Box Set to salute the King and Queen of UK Jazz, entitled ‘I Hear Music: A Celebration Of The Life And Work Of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth’.

Salvo Records, the Music Week award winning imprint of leading independent Union Square Music, today announce what is set to be the most comprehensive package honouring the careers of the legendary John Dankworth and Cleo Laine. The 4-CD Box set, ‘I Hear Music: A Celebration Of The Life And Work Of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth’ will be released on 1st October 2007.

Dankworth and Laine, who are nothing short of royalty in the realm of British jazz (and beyond), will this Autumn be celebrating their 80th birthdays (Dankworth – 20th September; Laine – October 28th). Though they have been married since 1958 and worked extensively together, they have both pursued highly successful careers in their own right. John Dankworth’s contribution to music was recognised in the 2006 New Years Honours List, in which he was made a Knight Bachelor; equally Cleo Laine is the only person ever to receive Grammy ® nominations in the jazz, popular and classical music categories. Laine was also made a Dame Commander in 1997.

Blessed with both a natural jazz instinct and an extraordinary range covering several octaves, Dame Cleo is one of the outstanding singers of our times. Her husky low notes and astonishing forays in the upper registers make her voice uniquely identifiable. She makes the most intelligent use of an eclectic span of material and her recordings are always filled with delightful surprises.

One of Britain’s major jazz (and soundtrack) composers, arrangers and musicians, Sir John has, since the late 1940s, worked at the top end of the spectrum in both the music that he has written and with whom he chose to perform. His active musical life, which also includes many appearances and recordings with his wife, shows no signs of abating. He remains a major presence on the British jazz scene. Indeed the joining of both artists in the musical and marital partnership has helped to keep them at the very top of their game.

Also set to be included on the box set are highlights from John Dankworth and Cleo Laine’s collaborations with their children, Alec (jazz bassist) and Jacqui (singer).

Ventura, CA–September 25, 2006– The Soupy Sales 3 DVD Box Set Collection was such a great success that Morada Vision was overwhelmed with emails and phone calls for the early black & white Soupy Sales shows. They had to dig into the archives and unearth the early Soupy shows to produce the Collector’s Edition Two-Soupy Sales In Living Black & White to meet the demand for the great comedy of yesteryear and satisfy baby boomers and collectors everywhere.

There are over 2 1/2 hours of Soupy and all his zany friends at their very best in the black and white episodes that made him a household name. This is the first time that this footage has been available on VHS or DVD. Highlights of the film include Soupy doing the Mouse, Pookie sings the blues, and Fang retrieves an arm.

For fans of comedy this is good news, having two names you know and trust before you commit your hard-earned dollars to acquiring this classic DVD, makes it a lot easier to a make decision.

In these complicated times its nice to kick back your feet, grab some popcorn and watch a good DVD that will bring a smile to your face and soul in the most innocent natural way. Its so easy to forget that once there were easier simpler times and comedians like Soupy Sales remind us that we all need to laugh and let go once in while.

Deluxe 4-CD Set Represents A Half Century Of Blues And Boogie.

Includes Performances with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, Jimmie Vaughan, Charles Brown and Los Lobos

In Stores October 31

LOS ANGELES – John Lee Hooker, master bluesman and undisputed father of boogie, recorded for more than 30 labels over a span of nearly 50 years. Amazingly, he has never had a definitive career box set – until now. On October 31, 2006, Shout! Factory will release Hooker, a 4-CD set that culls material from all eras – from a primitive 1948 recording of “Boogie Chillen’” to a version of the same song recorded exactly 50 years later in 1998 with Eric Clapton.

The set was compiled by Shawn Amos and Patrick Milligan with invaluable assistance from Zakiya Hooker, Executor-Trustee and Eugene Skuratowicz, Estate Manager of the John Lee Hooker Estate. Music journalist Ted Drozdowski wrote comprehensive liner notes, which delve into Hooker’s Mississippi and African influences, and follow his career through its many achievements and accolades up to his death in 2001. In addition, Van Morrison, Carlos Santana and Fito de la Parra, the surviving member of Canned Heat, provided additional notes recalling their respective collaborations with Hooker, highlights of which appear on the 4-CD set.

Born in 1917 to Mississippi sharecroppers, John Lee Hooker first heard blues on a wind-up Victrola and on KFFA-FM in nearby Helena, Ark. His parents were convinced that blues was the music of the devil and insisted that he practice in the barn. His stepfather, Louisiana guitarist Will Moore, brought John Lee in contact with what annotator Drozdowski calls the “rolling, mesmeric beat” of Shreveport blues, “which had more in common with the ancestral African origins of the music than the Delta sound.” He was also inspired by Delta blues forebears Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charley Patton.

Hooker migrated to Memphis, and then to Detroit, where he supported himself and his family playing rent parties, the inspiration for his John L.’s House Rent Boogie album in 1951. A rough acetate recording fell into the hands of local producer Bernie Besman, launching his recording career and leading to a series of 78s and 45s on labels like Fortune, Modern, King, Staff, Regal, Deluxe, Chess, Crown, Vee-Jay and Sensation. He recorded under several noms du disque: John Lee Cooker, John Lee Booker, Texas Slim, Birmingham Sam & His Magic Guitar, Johnny Williams, Delta John and Sir John Lee Hooker.

In the late ’60s, Hooker’s audience began to include white fans. Boogie disciples Canned Heat brought him to the attention of their fan base with the 1970 double album Hooker ‘N Heat. Hooker achieved legendary status, and went on to make a series of albums for ABC BluesWay, Impulse, Tomato, Pausa, Chameleon and Virgin/Pointblank. 1989’s The Healer, which included collaborations with Carlos Santana and Bonnie Raitt, earned him a Grammy® and brought him to the attention of a new generation of fans.

“I hope this set will introduce John Lee Hooker to a new generation of fans, and reintroduce him to those who might have forgotten,” says Shout! Factory A&R head Shawn Amos. “It shows how much gravitas he held in his presence, and even in a single note of his playing.”

Zakyia Hooker, John Lee Hooker’s daughter, adds, “I think this is phenomenal, to have all of my father’s music pulled together. It cuts through a really wide swath of music, from music recorded at a 1949 house party and an old acoustic spiritual, to his later music. The music was all over the place until Shout! Factory pulled it together for the edification of everyone – and they did so in a beautiful package. My father would have been smiling.”
