Mixing over 100 local music professionals with amateurs, from the Helensburgh area of West Scotland, a Charity has released a cover of the classic Bowie song "Heroes" in an attempt to raise funds for a local arts and music centre.

Mixing over 100 local music professionals with amateurs, from the Helensburgh area of West Scotland, a Charity has released a cover of the classic David Bowie song “Heroes” in an attempt to raise funds for a local arts and music centre.

In what is believed to be the first time a local community has banded together to record, produce and release a single, the charity is hoping that the record will not simply be perceived as a novelty gimmick, but rather that the song is judged upon its artistic merit.

The record has been described by Bowie’s record company as ‘unbelievably professional and full of passion’ and the overall project “as one of the most inspirational, ambitious, complex and inclusive community projects imaginable.”

The song which features 12 lead vocalists, 5 musicians and a choir of 60, collectively known as the Helensburgh Heroes Experience, was recorded in Glasgow’s Carlton Studios and on location in a local hall in Helensburgh. Helensburgh born Kenny Hyslop, a professional musician with Scots bands such as SLIK, Skids and Simple Minds, was the record’s producer.

The single can be heard at www.helensburghheroes.com and is now available to download from popular online music sites such as iTunes, Napster and Emusic.

The Charity is hoping that the single will not only attract commercial success, thus helping it to raise funds for much needed local arts and music facilities, but that it will also raise the profile of the past and present Helensburgh residents who have found global acclaim in the arts, sport, business and sciences, for example John Logie Baird and Deborah Kerr, and will inspire other communities to attempt similar projects.

About Helensburgh Heroes
Helensburgh Heroes is a Scottish charity aimed at promoting regeneration through the arts, culture and heritage. As the name suggests, it is a fresh and dynamic collection of local people based in the Clyde side town of Helensburgh, and holds its roots in celebrating past and present local residents who have found global acclaim in the arts, sport, business and sciences, for example John Logie Baird and Deborah Kerr. The charity prides itself on its ethos of involving the local community in any Helensburgh Heroes endeavours, and has the overall aim of establishing a much needed permanent arts and leisure facility in the area, to assist and inspire the local community (young people in particular) to reach their full creative potential.

If I say David Bowie, you might think “Life On Mars”, “Ziggy Played Guitar”, “Heroes” or even “Space Oddity”. Yes, there are many faces to Mr. Bowie, his music stretches back to the mid sixties and still continues to surprise us today.

I’ve been a David Bowie fan since way back in the big collar and platform shoe days of the 1970’s. I was probably 10 years old when I bought “The Laughing Gnome” single. Novelty record yes, but it did get me interested in what else this bloke could do.

Fast forward to go backwards. It wasn’t until 1979 that I became familiar with my favorite David Bowie songs. I was at a party ’round a friend’s house when I heard “Love You Till Tuesday”. “Who’s this?” I asked naively. “David Bowie” came the reply, as if I was a bit stupid to ask such a question. This song was one of his earliest from an album containing many other gems such as “She’s Got medals”, “The London Boys”, “Uncle Arthur” and many more, every one a classic.

So if you are only familiar with Mr Bowie’s famous songs, then give some of these old tunes a go and see what you think.

Here’s one for an example of what a great talent this man is.

David Bowie has been there ever since I can remember. I’ve enjoyed his tunes since I was a small kid, way back in the early 1970’s. People are well familiar with such songs as “Young Americans” and “Changes”, but have you spent time looking back a bit further than that? In the 60’s David was working on songs that to me, were some of the best he would ever produce.

Listen to “The Gospel According To Tony Day”. This was the b-side to the song “Laughing Gnome”. There are also albums out there with such classics on there as “Love Me Till Tuesday” or “Mr. Grave Digger”. One of my favourites is the song “The Little Bombadier” – it’s funny and sad.

Yes. So if you are a Bowie fan, sort yourself out with his early writings. I can honestly say you won’t be disappointed. You will feel like you have just discovered a new artist. It’s so mad none of these songs are anything like his latter recordings. Anyway. Have fun with the tunes and play them to your friends. Here’s one of my favourites to get you started.

Listen to “Uncle Arthur” on YouTube:

Listen to “The London Boys”:

Now go check out his first albums. He was definitely going through “Ch-ch-changes!!

Building on the success of ‘The Edge of the 80s’ earlier this year, it seemed only right and proper to continue the series. The logical next release is ‘The Edge of the 70s’, serving up 3CDs of classic tracks from the late 70s as well as some more obscure gems, and tracks that have never been on CD before.

The late 1970s are known for the rise in computers; the start of big things for the likes of Apple and Microsoft, the emergence of directors like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and the shift in music away from the more overblown progressive rock towards the experimental New Wave sound.

‘The Edge Of The 70s’ is not ‘just another 70s album’. It’s for the discerning music fan, or anyone with a keen interest in the late 70s, an era that has inspired many of today’s artists such as Kings Of Leon, Babyshambles and Interpol to name just a few.

This eclectic 3CD collection includes British rock legends Cure with “Boys Don’t Cry”, moving into living legend Patti Smith “Because The Night”, and the iconic Blondie “I’m Always Touched By Your Prescence Dear”.

The album gets even better with superstar David Bowie’s “Sounds & Vision”, Kate Bush with “Wow”, B52’s “Rock Lobster”, Gary Numan’s “Complex” and ending with Joe Jackson “Is She Really Going Out With Him”.

‘The Edge Of The Seventies’ is scheduled for release 22nd September, 2008 on Sony BMG.

Recently confirmed to headline Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park on 4th July, 2008, his only UK date this summer, Morrissey releases a new single “All You Need Is Me” on 19th May in the UK on Decca/Polydor.

“All You Need Is Me” is among a handful of new songs to have graced Morrissey’s set list over shows in recent months and was performed earlier this year on Later With Jools Holland along-side “Something Is Squeezing My Skull”, “That’s How People Grow Up” and the classic “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys”.

The “All You Need Is Me” single formats will feature new songs as exclusive b-sides.

“My Dearest Love” and “Children In Pieces” were recorded in LA with multi-award winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla who has won Oscars for his scores for the films Brokeback Mountain and Babel and Baftas for his scores for Babel and The Motorcycle Diaries. They feature additional production and were mixed by Jerry Finn, producer of 2004’s widely acclaimed ‘You Are The Quarry’ (a #2 album in the UK).

A third b-side, a cover of David Bowie’s “Drive-in Saturday” recorded live at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, Nebraska in May 2007, completes the set.

While the early 80’s is now a quarter of a century ago: the style, the sounds, the fashion pioneered by the fringe artists of the 80’s has never been so relevant to modern day life and music.

The Klaxons, CSS, New Young Pony Club, Calvin Harris are all artists who are heavily influenced by periphery 80s artists. Many a feel good album with the cheesy tunes of the 80s has been released but never something as razor sharp and stylish as ‘The Edge Of The Eighties’.

Now for the first time Sony BMG is proud to announce the release of an 80’s compilation with an ‘edgier’, fresher and cooler tracklisting. ‘The Edge Of The Eighties’ – highlighting some of the artists and tracks that may not be as familiar, but still defined the times, is set for UK release on 31st March, 2008.

Featuring fierce tracks from Ultravox “Vienna”, Visage “Fade To Gray”, New Order “Temptation”, Pretenders “Talk Of The Town”, The Associates “Party Fears Two”, Propaganda “Duel”, The Cure “The Walk” and Psychedelic Furs “Love My Way”.

If that isn’t enough this triple CD compilation also includes tracks from legends Adam & The Ants and superstar David Bowie. Many of these tracks have only previously been available on vinyl and now can all be found together on this excellent retrospective of the niche 80s bands that shaped a generation.
