Celebrating four decades of milestones, Donna Summer adds another accomplishment to her list with the success of her new album ‘Crayons’. The album debuted at #17 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart making it Summer’s highest debuting album ever. It also debuted at #5 on the Billboard R&B chart – another personal best.

‘Crayons’ is Donna Summer’s first album of all new studio material in 17 years and is her highest charting album since ‘She Works Hard For The Money’ in 1983.

Adding to her list of accomplishments is the recent success “I’m A Fire,” the first single from ‘Crayons’ which rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Charts making it her 13th #1 single to top the club charts and her 19th #1 charting single across all charts. Donna Summer is the only artist to have had a #1 charting dance hit in every decade since the 1970’s. “I’m A Fire” was remixed by several remixers including Solitaire, Craig C, Rod Carillo, Redtop, Matty Soulflower and Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy. The Rocasound original version is found on the full album.

Containing a potent mix of the up-tempo tunes and ballads, ‘Crayons’ showcases incredible new material, all cowritten by Donna (who wrote or co-wrote the majority of her hits of the 70’s and 80’s).

Working with Donna were renowned writers and producers including: Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Pink), Danielle Brisebois (Natasha Bedingfield, New Radicals), JR Rotem (Sean Kingston, Rihanna), Toby Gad (Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield), Evan Bogart (co-writer of Rihanna’s smash “SOS” and the son of legendary record executive, Casablanca Records founder and Donna’s mentor, Neil Bogart), and Lester Mendez (Shakira, Santana).

Donna describes the background of the title ‘Crayons’ and the aesthetic of the album as “a menagerie of colors and styles, with hints of different ethnic traditions and sounds. Singer/songwriter/pop culture icon Donna Summer has been working hard on ‘Crayons’, her bold and long-awaited new collection of songs, her first full-length studio album of newly-penned material since 1991’s ‘Mistaken Identity’ and her first new release since “VH1 Presents: Live & More Encore!,” the CD (and DVD) companion to her top-rated VH1 television special which returned her to the Billboard Top 200 in 1999.

Five-time Grammy winner, Donna Summer, maintains an unbroken string of hits throughout the 70s and 80s, most of which she wrote. Donna holds the record for most consecutive double albums to hit #1 on the Billboard charts (3) and first female to have four #1 singles in a 12 month period; 3 as a solo artist and one as a duo with Barbara Streisand.

Songs on ‘Crayons’ run the musical gamut from “a really real pop pop song” like “The Science of Love,” to retro-modern “dance-oriented” tracks like “I’m A Fire,” to the “socially conscious” “Bring Down The Reign” and the world-music-flavored “Driving Down Brazil.”

With the album’s centerpiece ballad, “Be Myself Again,” Donna Summer creates the album’s most intimate and revelatory musical meditation. “What I wanted to do,” she says, “is strip down a song. I wanted it to be a cappella. There’s always so much hoopla around the voice, I wanted to do a song where there’s no hoopla. There’s just you and the audience listening to somebody who’s just singing to themselves, singing about the intimate parts of what it has taken to do what they do. The thing to do is stay connected to the true self and that’s really difficult in show business. That’s what the song is about.”

Alicia Keys has once again come up with the goods with her new video for hit single, “No One”. The single is off of her third studio album, ‘As I Am,’ set for release on November 13th, 2007 on J Records. ‘As I Am’ features collaborations with John Mayer, Linda Perry, Floetry’s Marsha Ambrosius and Timbaland.

Ever since a friend handed me her debut CD, ‘Songs in A Minor’ and I heard “Fallin’” for the first time, back in 2001, I knew we were on to something good – and it seems Alicia Keys has just been getting better as the years go on. On stage she’s grown from being the girl with braids, sitting behind the piano to a now more glamorous woman who can dance and “work” the stage more comfortably.

It’s too bad that Britney Spears walked away with the most publicity after the 2007 Video Music Awards. After watching Alicia Keys at the VMAs, it’s amazing that this talented singer and performer wasn’t all the rage after the show. Luckily, though, there’s still plenty of time to savor a fine performance, like a fine wine. Maybe in the long run, it’s best that Alicia’s hype is more subtle.

When I was growing up, Irene Cara and Donna Summer were two of my favorite singers to sing along with. Alicia Keys has captured that feeling with “No One” along with a current and modern vibe. Since her voice naturally sounds the way it does, there’s no need for the flamboyant “trills” that have become the norm for so many singers. The video for “No One” is a new window into the world of Ms. Keys and it’s great to see true talent once again, hitting the airwaves.
