Elvis Costello is set to release his new album, ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane’ on Universal June 1st, 2009. The record was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante during a three-day session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio.

Elvis Costello on amazon.co.uk

Elvis Costello on amazon.com

Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass), some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond.

Several of these songs, including “Down Among The Wines and Spirits”, were given their first public performances during Costello’s acclaimed solo appearances as part of “The Bob Dylan Show” in late 2007.

Watch “The Scarlet Tide” video:

The album includes ten previously unrecorded songs. “Sulphur to Sugarcane” and “The Crooked Line”, were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, “I Felt The Chill” marks Costello’s second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn.

Costello revisits two songs from his catalogue in string band style. Both songs were originally written for Johnny Cash. “Hidden Shame” was indeed included on Cash’s album, ‘Boom Chicka Boom’.

The album title makes reference to “The Secret Songs”, Costello’s unfinished commission for the Royal Danish Opera about the life of Hans Christian Andersen.

Seeking a new connection from the author to the Anglophone world, Costello wrote about the Andersen’s relationship with the world famous singer, Jenny Lind in “She Handed Me A Mirror” and “How Deep Is The Red”.

“She Was No Good”, relates some of the chaotic details of Lind’s famous “All-American” concert tour of 1850, which was promoted by P.T. Barnum. In its aftermath, “Red Cotton” imagines Barnum reading an Abolishionist pamphlet, while manufacturing cheap souvenirs of the adventure.

These four episodes were newly adapted for the instrumentation of this record.

Indeed these are first Costello compositions to be predominantly rooted in acoustic music since his 1986 album, ‘King Of America’, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. He also produced the 1989 album, ‘Spike’.

T Bone adds his distinctive Kay electric guitar to several of the numbers, the only amplified instrument on the recording.

Jim Lauderdale takes the close vocal harmony part throughout the record and Emmylou Harris contributed a third vocal part on the chorus of “The Crooked Line” on the final day of recording.

The record concludes with the waltz, “Changing Partners”, a song made famous by Bing Crosby.

The cover artwork of ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane’ is an ink drawing by the renowned cartoonist, illustrator and author, Tony Millionaire.

Elvis Costello first recorded in Nashville with George Jones in 1979 and returned to the city for ‘Almost Blue’, his 1981 album of classic country covers.

He returned to the city in 2004 to record a duet rendition of “The Scarlet Tide” with Emmylou Harris.

This song, co-written with T Bone Burnett, received an Academy Award nomination for Alison Krauss’ rendition in the motion picture, “Cold Mountain” in 2003.

Select US tour dates featuring musicians from the album — dubbed “The Sugarcanes” — will follow in June and August, 2009.

‘SECRET, PROFANE, & SUGARCANE’ TRACK LIST:

Disc One of the collection opens with a previously unreleased recording of “Ooby Dooby” Roy’s early group the Teen Kings followed by “Hey! Miss Fannie,” an Ahmet Ertegun composition performed by Roy’s first band, The Wink Westerners, in Dallas in 1955.

The first disc of The Soul Of Rock And Roll continues with a series of Orbison’s 1950s recordings including Teen Kings sides cut with Norman Petty in 1956 and 1957 at Petty’s legendary studio in Clovis, New Mexico as well an unreleased cover of Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” from 1956.

Also featured on disc one are an ample selection of Orbison’s early Sun Records rockabilly recordings, produced by Sam Phillips, including both sides of his first US chart hit, 1956’s “Ooby Dooby” and “Go! Go! Go!” and several unreleased demos including “Claudette,” “Night Owl” and “Love Struck” from 1958. The first disc’s fascinating cross section of Orbison’s groundbreaking 1950s roots includes the previously unreleased “Guitar Pull Medley: I Want You, I Need You, I Love You/I Was The One/That’s All Right/Mary Lou/You’re My Baby” recorded in Galveston, Texas in 1956 featuring Roy Orbison solo on guitar and vocal. The disc closes with Orbison’s 1958 RCA Victor single, “Almost Eighteen,” produced by Chet Atkins and a pair of his early 50’s sides for Monument: “With The Bug” and “Pretty One.”

Disc Two of Roy Orbison’s The Soul Of Rock And Roll focuses on the artist’s watershed recordings for Monument in the early 1960s, bringing together emotionally wrenching hits like “Love Hurts,” “Blue Bayou” and “Only The Lonely” with career-defining masterpieces like “Oh, Pretty Woman”, and “Crying” and “In Dreams” alongside a selection of rare b-sides from the period.

Disc Three continues with the Monument years with live recordings from the era and some of his strongest studio work including the signature classic, “Oh Pretty Woman,” Roy’s biggest hit and one of the most immediately recognized and popular rock songs of all time. The third disc of The Soul Of Rock And Roll includes many of the singles Roy recorded for MGM as well as the Orbison songs from the films “Zabriskie Point” and “The Fastest Guitar Alive,” the MGM western-musical which marked Orbison’s only starring role in a movie.

The goal of Moneyland is to raise awareness of serious economic issues facing Americans today through a thoughtful selection of six new (or newly recorded) songs, mixed with eight neglected gems and classic favorites that offer a hard-hitting look at today’s economic injustice.

In addition to songs from the Del McCoury Band, the album features songs from Marty Stuart, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby along with The Fairfield Four, Chris Knight and others.

Fortunately, the concept behind Moneyland isn’t a novel one; there are many great organizations that have been fighting these battles for a long time.

Del’s goal with Moneyland is to draw that connection between the sentiments of each song and the organizations that are dedicated to the issues dealt with in the songs.

It is the intention of each of these organizations to gather inspired individuals together for a greater good. We believe that music–especially this music–is a great way to start the process; we hope it will inspire listeners to move from awareness to action.

Please visit this special Moneyland Page to hear the music and find out more information about the organizations that we’re speaking about. Each song offers something special; for example, listen to “Farmer’s Blues” performed by Marty Stuart and Merle Haggard and find out more about organizations who are on the front lines of the battle to save the American Farmer. Or listen to “Carry Me Across the Mountain” performed by Dan Tyminski with Alison Krauss and learn about how the National Rural Health Association is addressing the health care and medical issues of rural America.

In addition to all of this, IFC (Independent Film Co.) have teamed up with Moneyland for a contest that inspires filmmakers to react and respond to the issues addressed on the album. Click the video below for more information about the IFC contest and visit www.livinginmoneyland.com for more information about the project.
