Born in Santiago de Chile, one of the southernmost southern countries of the world where deserts, waterfalls, glaciers and mountains coexist in a 4000 km coastline, Yael began dancing and singing at a very young age.
In 2004 Yael self released her debut ‘Common Ground’, a blend of indie folk and lounge electronica, which was hailed by audiences and praised by critics as “one of the top 50 albums of the year” (Rolling Stone Chile).

Her music can also be heard on the documentaries: Al Final del Tunel, Holocaust: 3rd Generation, Ondinas and Ralph Lauren runway shows.

Stylusboy is a singer-songwriter from Coventry playing melodic, delicate songs that warm the heart. Think Aqualung, Damien Rice, Badly Drawn Boy or maybe Elbow.

‘Fingerprint EP’ is Stylusboy’s debut release which he recorded and produced himself, with the help a few friends. Fingerprint EP contains songs about love, hope, joy and the beautiful things in every day life. Recording the drums in a local community centre and the rest of the EP in his lounge, this is very much a home grown release.

Tracks have been very warmly received and already had radio play. 13 Shuffle have described the track “Stopclock” as “Purely fragile – a precious parcel beautifully bubble-wrapped – handled with care and sincerity.”

Stylusboy gigs regularly and live outings are an intimate affair where he takes the listeners on a journey with his guitar and voice. He recently played a packed mainstage at the Godiva Festival, a performance that helped his reputation grow further.

Stylusboy has played alongside Newton Faulkner, The King Blues and up and coming artists Olivia Broadfield and Jess Morgan.

Fingerprint EP was released via itunes and the usual online outlets as well as through Stylusboy’s Big Cartel Store on his Myspace page.

The physical CD is released in a brown card sleeve, each numbered and fingerprinted by Stylusboy. Each EP also includes an individual abstract photograph taken by Stylusboy.
Details of how to buy are on www.myspace.com/stylusboy.

“If you want meaningful and poignant song writing without being preached at then look to Stylusboy. It is a renewed innocence filled with hope and light during a dark and hopeless day.” – Tasty Burger Records

“Mixing a sense of melancholy akin to Aqualung with a sense of the melodic that recalls the lighter side of Ryan Adams.” – God is in the TV

“Stylusboy can best be described as melodic acoustic fare, but there is more to the music than that, in fact I just can’t put my finger on it.” – Die Shellsuit Die

2009 UK shows:

(Dates and information subject to change.)

Oct 19 – St Mary’s Church – With Atlum Schema, Cheltenham
Nov 6th – The Moorings, Leamington
Nov 12th – Cox’s Yard, Stratford

The Forcefield Kids are set to release ‘Harmony & Discord’ EP (DFNT Records).

This is the second release by The Forcefield Kids and is the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut, Home EP.

This record shows a shift towards a more jazzy, bass driven sound whilst still keeping the lo-fi and alternative rock stylings of the first EP. Both EPs will serve as the basis for the as yet unnamed album slated for release early next year.

The first EP was very well recieved by critics and the public alike and we feel that this EP will appeal not only to Hip-Hop fans but also to anyone that enjoys intelligent, original music.

Digital Release: 2nd November 2009

Praise for the Home EP:

“They themselves say that they ‘have always striven to deliver alt.hiphop with depth and maturity’ and IMHO they have succeeded mightily…” – Rebelriffs.blogspot.com

“…their music is full of energy, they believe in what they’re singing about. It’s the kind of thing that crosses genres and makes people take note of you no matter if you’re singing or rapping.” – Lithiumradio.org

“The Forcefield Kids have created an epic E.P where futuristic shadowy beats gel flawlessly with lyrical flows which are equally deep and meaningful. With E.P number two, entitled Harmony And Discord, more or less finished let’s hope this duo keep flying the flag for the north, producing interesting original British Hip-Hop and some point soon get the credit and fame they deserve.” – Britishhiphop.co.uk

“The musical backdrop can veer from the woozy to the pastoral to the sharp and is a supremely confident piece of work. And the rapped commentary is whip-smart; boundless energy being drawn from a deep well of reserves to keep the whole enterprise right on the money. This is Hip-Hop with intelligence, wit and no little grace.” – The Crack Magazine

Fresh from the mountains of Asheville, NC arrives Modo with their debut self-titled EP.

Featuring the vocals of Craig Larimer and the eclectic guitar work of Jake Rosenbloum, Modo exhibits the reemergence of electro-pop, a nostalgia of the jazz swagger, and their childhood influence of grunge rock.

Modo’s self-titled EP was recorded at Asheville’s famed Echo Mountain Studios (Avett Brothers, Band Of Horses, VHS Or Beta, Toubab Krewe).

The EP contains six original tracks and releases November 10, 2009.

Portugal’s The Doups release their ‘Six O’clock Shadow’ EP on September 30, 2009 – following up the recent “Try Lie Die Whatever” single.

The Doups are currently gigging Portugal, planning their first UK Tour and recording their debut album, out early 2010.

The Doups present their debut release.

A Portuguese indie/rock band formed in 2007 in Setúbal, the band consists of João Rodrigues (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Nuno Cunha (lead guitar and backing vocals), Gustavo Andrade (bass guitar) and André Rosa (drums and percussion).

‘Six O’clock Shadow’ introduces The Doups as a band overflowing with energy. Big guitar riffs pull you one way, just as the vocals sneak in with effortless charm the other. Comparisons to The Strokes and The Hives have been made and not unjustly. A perfect introduction for their debut album (currently in production), due early 2010.

An invitation to record in Southern Studios, London, with producer Harvey Birrell saw The Doups enter and win best regional garage band to pay for their flights to the UK.

While tracks were still being mixed, The Doups entered a special mix of “Try Lie Die Whatever” into the Supajam “Fast track to Heineken FIB” Competition with over 900 other bands across Europe and over 1600 tracks.

The band was announced as TOP 5 finalists and flown to London to play a show with 4 other bands in front of 7 music industry judges. Finishing, as “runners up”, Supajam released “Try Lie Die” (supajam mix) digitally. In October this will be officially featured on Apple and Turner Broadcasting as single of the month, and Vidzone, featured on Sony PS3 and PSP.

Recently completing a promotional FNAC tour of Portugal and appearing at Portugal’s Rock One festival with The Offspring, The Doups have announced more dates for September and October with plans for their first UK tour to be announced shortly.

They have been working together since the beginning of 2009 and have produced this 4 track EP inspired by a sense of optimism and joy in life that they both share. The sleeve also reflects Belle and Mark’s interest in fashion and film respectively, twin themes that will be explored with future releases.

Belle Erskine is well known in the London music scene and has shared the stage and recording studio with the likes of Groove Armada and Celine Dion and she is also a regular at Ronnie Scott’s.

For the forthcoming debut album Herbert gathered a range of musicians to record on the tracks including Richard Erksine on bass and guitar, Steve Turner (Kylie’s sometime keyboard player) and Matt Berry on drums while Herbert himself also plays bass and guitar.

This debut EP is full of calming yet moving songs which demonstrate the duo’s strong vocals and the talented writing. The music has been influenced by the different influences throughout Mark’s life, creating a sound that is a blend of pop, jazz and folk.

The EP showcases a range of styles, from the simple, almost-hymn like “Glory” and the late night, Jazz-tinged “Perfect Moment” to the epic feel of “Nirvana” and the slow-burning power of the ballad “Heart on Fire.”

The forthcoming album follows the release of the singles Simple, the Double A-side Hey It’s Alright and Up For Air and more recently Monkey on the Bus, all of which are available to download on iTunes and has received widespread radio play.

With the bulk of their debut album in the can, the band is working on final tracks and with a strong undercurrent of joy, hope and optimism running this EP, looks destined to find a wide and appreciative audience.

Hadouken! return with a brand new EP out now that cements their reputation as Britain’s most dynamic and forward-thinking young band.

Recorded in Holland with gilded Dutch electronic dance producers Noisia, the M.A.D EP is proof of further massive progression for the quintet who met in Leeds at university just three years ago.

The EP evolves the cutting edge dance-rock sound unveiled on their UK number 12 debut album, 2008’s Music For An Accelerated Culture, by delivering tracks that are harder, louder, more rhythmic and tightly focused than anything they’ve attempted before, or than anything else on offer by their contemporaries.

Watch “M.A.D.” video:

If an historic comparison was to be attempted, cast your mind far back to the earliest, comparatively sketchy works by the likes of the Prodigy or the Chemical Brothers. Then recall the impact when each delivered in turn Voodoo People and Block Rockin’ Beats. That’s the kind of leap forward successfully maneuvered here. Britain’s next great dance-rock band have arrived.

There are also three remixes of M.A.D on the EP by Detboi, Phace and Plastician respectively, as well as two more brand new tracks: “Something Very BAD,” which is exclusive to this EP, and a dub of “Ugly”, a track that will appear in a different form on the forthcoming, as yet untitled second album.

As anyone who witnessed the reception lavished on not just old favourites but also when new material such as M.A.D was recently road-tested in front of packed festival audiences at Exit, Optimus and Underage will testify, the stars are currently aligning for Hadouken!’s much-anticipated return. Buckle up.

Track listing:

1. M.A.D
2. Something Very Bad
3. Ugly (Dub Mix)
4. M.A.D (Detboi Remix)

Toronto band Corduroy are going to be releasing three song EPs, called Demoroys.

The Demoroy’s will be available for free download on the band’s Myspace (www.myspace.com/thebandcorduroy) and on a Pay-What-You-Can basis at shows. Demoroy Volume 1 will be available for free download on Tuesday, September 7, 2009!

Demoroy Vol. 1 is the bands first recorded material since their 2007 self-titled EP. The Demoroy was recorded at Toronto’s Giant Studios (owned by Sebastien Grainger and Metric’s Jimmy Shaw) and produced by Dan Weston (Attack in Black).

MINI BIO

It’s been a long time coming for Toronto four piece, Corduroy. Developing their brand of haunting folklore tales laced with sweeping post rock guitars and group hum-a-longs, hasn’t been all that easy. Originally starting out as Whatever Happened to Corduroy? in 2007, the band released a well received debut self titled EP of their mixed and messy ideas that was blazing with promise. After dropping the wordy “whatever happened to” and some line up shifts, the band has developed a unique and delicate blend of indie rock. In fact, one could say Corduroy have found their calling. Unlike most bands, Corduroy cite influential songwriters like Bright Eyes, Pavement, Okkervil River, and Arcade Fire all in one song, and then manage to come out sounding entirely original and fresh. Each song stamped with the Corduroy sound and memorable punch, that will bring first time listeners back for more again and again.

It’s their winning anthems that brought them to a number of stages and festivals (most namely Cutting Edge Music Festival and Canadian Music Week) and playing alongside the top in Canadian indie talent like Oh No Forest Fires and Dinosaur Bones. The band has recently, and will continue to, put out new three song Demoroy releases, which will be available online and at shows from the band for free. The band holed up at Jimmy Shaw and Sebastien Grainger’s Giant Studios with producer Dan Weston (Attack in Black) and refined some of their most promising songwriting to date. The new year will bring the band to many new stages across the country and it won’t take long for these home-baked tracks to make a home out of Canada.

THE BUZZ

“There’s something beautiful about the restless yet calming voice of Corduroy’s Trevor Blumas, and the rest of the boys help complete a medley of rough acoustic symphonies, with quirky lyrical insertions, thunderous booms, and sporadic rock explosions.” – Martiniboys.com

“Anyone approaching Corduroy may find themselves pleasantly surprised.” – IHeartMusic.net

September 2009 tour dates

Sept. 9 @ The Drake Hotel, TORONTO (*TIFF launch party, invite only)
Sept. 25 @ Sneaky Dees, TORONTO (w. The Paint Movement, Make Your Exit)

William Orbit’s new EP ‘Purdy’ comes out this September 21st, featuring several top-class remixes of the lush, layered original.

The track is taken from William’s new album ‘My Oracle Lives Uptown’, which met with considerable acclaim earlier in 2009.

Biog: short version

William Orbit has been in high demand as a producer and remixer for well over a decade, most famously working with Madonna on her 1998 album ‘Ray Of Light’, as well as Blur, Britney Spears, Sugababes, Pink and scores of other artists.

Although ‘My Oracle Lives Uptown’ is probably William Orbit’s most immediate album, it’s so subtly layered that it only reveals itself fully after a number of plays. And like his other solo albums, it will surely be resistant to the ageing process. His vision is idiosyncratic and original enough to not to have to try to play catch-up with anyone else, which gives his music a curiously timeless feel.

Remix Notes

Chicane – a legend of dance music, whose most recent foray into the charts was with ‘Poppiholla’, a reworking of the Sigur Ros hit.

Greenmoney – the self-styled ‘pair of jokers from west London’ have recently got their grubby mitts on Kanye, Kid Cudi and Amp Fiddler.

Henner & Green – described as ‘psychedelic progressive’, these guys have also notably remixed ‘Home and Dry’ by the Pet Shop Boys.

Billy Buttons – Craspedia is a genus of daisies commonly known as billy buttons or woollyheads. They are native to Australia and New Zealand where they grow in a variety of habitats from sea level to the alps.

Curly Hair is Jessica and Benjamin. A creation born of spending an unhealthy amount of time together, the band is a natural extension of the pair.

The two had been playing music together in Brighton’s infamous Willkommen Collective (The Leisure Society, Miserable Rich, Sons of Noel and Adrian) for a year before they took refuge from a downpour in a charity shop on a rainy December day and Jessica discovered the perfect guitar (now named Tiny) to inspire the two to write songs together.

“We write songs about never having any money, not being very good at falling in love and woodland animals,” they say, with a charming honesty that comes across in their sound.

Running their own label Toy Soldier Records (previously Huw Stephens’ DIY label of the week) with a few friends, this is a band that are into doing it themselves, from recording in Benjamin’s bedroom to making CD covers and stage banners.

Starting out with intimate house party and gallery shows, their live act is colorful and can involve as many as 6 extra Willkommen cast members lending their skills to the sound. The pair have recently expanded into a three piece, with Michael taking over percussive duties. They often indulge in cloaks, face paint and feathers onstage, making their shows exciting and fun.

Curly like to travel, and in the last few months have been playing anti-folk lineups in Berlin and Paris, also finding time to busk the streets while on tour, spreading their enchanting songs further than these shores. Time off on tour in the UK tends to involve hay bailing and chasing lambs on farms in return for places to stay.

“Charming lo-fi pop” – The Independent

“Like some anti-folk bastard Belle and Sebastian” – OCDC

“Delightfully twee 4/5″ – Shred Magazine

“Like if the Shins had washed their music in a coat of nostalgia” – J.C. Harnell

“Lo-fi perfect pop” – Willkommen Collective

Although they may appear to be newcomers, South London-based quintet Baxter have a vast range of musical backgrounds, influences and identities they bring together making them stand out amongst trendy ‘scene-of-the-day’ acts.

This band have no interest in day glo electro. Nor do they have an interest in making statements against ‘the man’ whoever he is. They care about three things: creating exciting music, performing crowd energising sets and having fun in life!

Even though the title of their debut EP, ‘End of the World’ which features single “Standing on the Edge of the Tide” may lead one to believe this is not the case, in actuality their music shines through like an uplifting ray of sunlight peering through rain clouds after a storm with appealing choruses and finely layered arrangements. (Wow! Where did that sentence come from Mr. PR Man?!)

Having been compared to acts such as Snow Patrol, Kings of Leon and Snoop Dogg (just checking you were reading this), it is no wonder that they’re as popular as they are. Oh and it helps if certain members of the bands were in successful and higher profile acts previously. Have a look at their biography if you don’t believe me. Don’t worry. I’ll wait… Now do you see what I’m talking about?

On to their career and EP at the present. The cold hard facts are they’ve been gigging all over the UK and playing all the right venues in London (229, The Astoria(RIP), Clapham Grand) thus building up quite a fan base and selling out many of these spots.

They were nominated for Best Indie Act at the 2008 Indy Music Awards with no material released. The EP is getting early industry support from countless people (We can’t tell you who due to drummer Dave’s day job’s requirement of client confidentiality.)

They’re also one of the Saturday night headliners on the main stage at the Fahrenheit Festival in August with a slot confirmed at the Fresh Festival in Scotland in September and a launch party at Proud Galleries in London coming up on the 21st of August, 2009. Other touring is planned for the rest of autumn.

The Paul Atkins produced (Charlotte Johansen) and Andy Jackson mastered (Pink Floyd) ‘End of the World’ EP features four tracks reflecting their life experiences individually and as a group. From the dark side of relationships told in a way that puts a positive spin on it (‘End of the World’) to the insane world of being a manufactured pop star (‘Avenue’), this is a gutsy debut which is sure to please. Don’t take our word for it, though. Come down to Proud Galleries on the 21st August and witness for yourself that the end of the world certainly isn’t coming for Baxter.

The ‘End of the World’ EP and the single from it “Standing On the Edge of the Tide” are out on the 24th of August 2009 on Malloty Up Records.

Miami, Florida-based organicArma released their second EP, entitled ‘Awarned,’ on June 30th. It features four versions of the title track: Radio Edit, Extended Mix, King Unique Remix, and Degenerate Remix.

In ‘Awarned’ the band tells a tale from the eye of a person who is confused about his life and unsure about his dreams. organicArma sings about taking the risk of coming into the understanding of an individual’s collective duality as opposite to the addiction of social equality. Through the video, the story of this mysterious character is revealed and one will ask, “Could he trade the omnipotent for free will?”

The ‘Awarned’ EP follows on the heels of their first EP, ‘Discordia,’ which came out on February 3rd. A full album is planned for fall release as well.

The group is fresh off their tour opening for Fischerspooner, a trek which logged stops in fifteen cities including Dallas, Houston, Denver, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, and others, through the latter half of May and first week of June 2009.

organicArma, who will be featured on MSN’s Windows Media Guide for the entire month of July as their Emerging Artist of the Month, weaves philosophy, psychology, and science to construct its message.

The band, comprised of dhArma (acustronic drums), lhArma (keys, bass, samples), and phAxas (samples, percussive MIDI, DJ) takes its inspiration from minimal techno, techno, house, dub, classical, industrial, rock, and Afro-Latin beats to create music that is original.

The band combines original instrumentation with provocative lyrics: for organicArma, there is no one lead singer. Since all members are responsible for writing lyrics, each member takes on the protagonistic role of delivering their vocal message. The band encourages listeners to think beyond their current realities to create a reality based on one’s own imagination. organicArma utilizes the concept of duality to connect ones opposite and come up with all the possibilities in between.

organicArma is based out of Miamis Wynwood Art District, as is their label Acustronic, a concept label dedicated to raising mind awareness through provocative yet accessible music. Acustronics Awarehouse is headquarters for organicArma, a live music venue, Luis Perez Galeria, and a sculpture garden.

The band has performed at such prestigious locations as The Louvre, Casino Nouvou (Paris), Maxims (Paris), BMI Latin Alternative Showcase (NYC), ART Basel 2006, and the Winter Music Conference in Miami in 2008 and 2009.

Few songstresses cut their teeth on more surprising stuff. After all, not every brunette with an acoustic guitar has the good fortune of being best known for her work alongside former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert in International Shades, now do they?

But there’s an expiration date on Brooklynite Alexa Wilding’s “best known” distinction, as the siren singer is set to release her debut EP, a capstone paean to Laura Nyro, Sandy Denny, and the fleet of strong, gilded female songwriters they inspired.

Conceived and written by Alexa Wilding, and featuring contributions from Tim Foljahn – who has shared the helm with the likes of Cat Power, Thurston Moore and the late, great Townes Van Zandt – the release is a chilling whisper, a beautifully corralled song cycle that moves seamlessly from piece to piece, echoing years of history and decades more of possibility. It’s a charm that’s been noticed by everyone from Nylon Mag, to Page Six.

“Lilith Fair resurrects just in time for this New York chanteuse… – NYLON

“Songbird ALEXA WILDING is a throwback to Josephine Baker and Joan Baez. Meet the new meaning of Old School.” – NY POST, PAGE SIX

“[Alexa Wilding] sings wintry, poetic songs that have a ghostly air about them.” – TIME OUT NY

Wilding will take her show to the stage this month in New York City at the Highline Ballroom. Joining her will be Parisian chanteuse Emilie Simon and her brand of Kate Bush-meets-2009 electro pop.

July 2009:

07/23 – New York, NY – Highline Ballroom w/ Emilie Simon at 7pm
