Omara Portuondo’s ‘Gracias’ wins The Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Tropical Album

Illustrious Cuban singer Omara Portuondo has made history twice this year.

In October, the remarkable vocalist, and only female star of the Buena Vista Social Club™, became one of the first Cuban artists in six years to obtain a visa to perform in the U.S., marking a cultural breakthrough in the strained relations between her homeland and the U.S.

On November 5, 2009, she also became the first Cuban resident to present at the 10th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, where she delivered the prestigious Song of The Year award.

She was honored again as the winner for Best Contemporary Tropical Album or “Mejor Album Tropical Contemporaneo” with her latest release ‘Gracias’ produced by Montuno Productions and released on World Village.

Although Omara Portuondo is a four-time Latin GRAMMY nominee, and won a “Premio Musica Brasileira” Brazilian Music Award last year for her duets album with Maria Bethania, as well as a Billboard Latin Music Award in 2005, this is her first GRAMMY award.

“I’m going to represent Cuba, because I think I’m going to be the only one that will be there,” Portuondo told the New York Daily News the day before the awards ceremony. “I’ll be there for all of the others.”

Portuondo performed two U.S. shows in October, for the first time since 2003, at UCLA’s Royce Hall and at the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Of her San Francisco show the Oakland Tribune wrote, “It’s impossible to say whether she handles the fast or slow numbers better. Whatever kind of song she’s singing at the time is the one that best suits her.” Portuondo returns in February of 2010 with concerts in Washington DC, Boston and New York City, among other major cities.

‘Gracias’, which was also awarded the Cubadisco 2009 Grand Prix in May, is Portuondo’s third solo album, and it marks a professional musical career spanning 60 years.

The New York Times declared that at 79 “her voice …is rich, shapely, dynamic, and still sultry”, and the Los Angeles Times called her “still a vibrant contemporary performer”.

She first found fame in her home country with Las D’Aida quartet, and throughout the 1970s and ’80s was a highly acclaimed solo vocalist. It was the Buena Vista Social Club™, however, that launched her into worldwide fame, along with such major figures as Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González and Compay Segundo.

‘Gracias’ was produced by Ale Siqueira, with musical direction from Swami Jr., and it features “some striking collaborations” (Songlines), with such guest artists as Jorge Drexler, Richard Bona, Cachaíto López, Chico Buarque and Chucho Valdés. It is a special gift from the artist to herself and to the songwriters for whom she feels the highest regard.

As the Montreal Gazette writes, it is “a highly personal collection of ballads… she packs a lot of feeling into this tender and nostalgic album.”

These are the songs she has always longed to sing.

Saddened by the loss of singer-songwriter John Martyn, Jersey Budd had some kind words to say: “John Martyn was one of only a few people to leave me absolutely spellbound by his musical genius. It turned out that I was the last person to ever be asked to support John. Whatever I achieve in music, this will go down as one of my proudest moments, and a great honour.”

Jersey continues to impress, and impress is exactly what he did on Wednesday at Water Rats. The singer-songwriter showcased songs from his stunning forthcoming album ‘Wonderlands’.

Jersey releases his infectious new single “Visions Of You”, February 16th.

—
Russell Brand is currently on his 28-date, sold out UK tour, but due to phenomenal demand he announced a rare and simply unmissable, stand-up show at London’s O2 Arena, April 17th.

—
Politics enthusiast Will Young takes to the Question Time hot seat next Thursday (Feb 5th). Will, who is a fan of the show assured us that he is swotting up on the hot topics of the day.

Will releases his last-ever physical single ‘Let It Go’ from the same titled album on March 2nd.

—
Delta Spirit were impressive on Tuesday night at Borderline. The five-piece ripped through a storming set that included their irresistible single “Trashcan”.

They play their last London gig tonight at Koko (Club NME), before heading back to the U.S. They are playing SXSW in March before returning to the UK for more live dates. Their stunning album ‘Ode To Sunshine’ is released March 23rd.

Despite their feverish schedule this year which took in numerous side projects, solo records, countless dancefloor-igniting remixes, production duties and, of course relentless touring (which culminated in their triumphal homecoming shows at Brixton Academy in November) that indefatigable, delightfully off-kilter five-headed electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip have somehow found the time to assemble a lovingly put together little present for their fans.

Hot Chip on amazon.com

Hot Chip on amazon.co.uk

Not only that, they have managed to rope in the services of none other than the godfather of the experimental psych-prog world, Robert Wyatt and kindred mischievous electronic spirits Geese to help out as well.

Long recognised as one of the pioneers of avant-jazz rock (as recently as this year by Domino Records infact, who have just re released his back catalogue), from his beginnings as a member of Soft Machine and through his collaborations with Scritti Politti and Syd Barrett, Robert Wyatt brings his quietly magical touch to 3 songs personally chosen from Hot Chip’s 2008 album ‘Made in the Dark’.

The result – as recorded at Gallery Studios earlier this year – are several mutations of songs that are as delicate and whimsical as they are adventurous and distinctive, be it the quixotic cornet and jew’s harp on “Made in the Dark”, or Wyatt’s singular vocals and whistling on “Whistle for Will”, or the lush added effects and atypical arrangements on “We’re Looking for a Lot of Love”.

Meanwhile, Hot Chip’s old friends and collaborators Geese (aka Emma and Vince from The Elysian Quartet) also lent a hand, reworking the new, Robert Wyatt assisted “We’re Looking…” while completely overhauling “One Pure Thought” from a straight-ahead floor shaker into something stranger, dreamier, but no less lovely. All in all, a deliciously unpredictable collaboration made in quirk-pop heaven.

The EP will be available January 27, 2009 at select indie record shops (visit www.thinkindie.com to find a store near you).

Fans can download 2 tracks from the EP on from HotChip.co.uk on December 19, 2008, thus providing a stimulus that is musical and financial for us all.

Lastly, congratulations is in order for Hot Chip, as they picked up their first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording for the track “Ready For The Floor”.

The Annual Grammy Awards will be announced live on on Feb. 8, 2009 (8 – 11:30 p.m. ET/PT) on CBS.

CD Tracklisting:
Available from indie retailers 27th January.

2. Whistle for Will (with Robert Wyatt)

The first single pick from ‘Round 2′ has been chosen – “It’s Yours,” impacted Urban Mainstream radio on Monday, December 8th, the single is the #1 most added single at Urban Mainstream radio and will impact Rhythm radio on January 12th.

Among the A-list producers onboard for ‘Round 2′ are Jasper (who worked on Lloyd’s hits “You” and “All Around The World”) and the CoStars (whose credits include Teairra Marie’s “Make A Girl Feel”).

The video for “It’s Yours” will be shot by director Jonathan Mannion, who delivered the evocative and downright sexy video for “Bed” last year, and went on to shoot the video for “Suffocate” as well.

“Bed” (whose sales have topped 775,000) hit #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs chart and #5 on the Hot 100, and the video spent 8 weeks at #1 on BET’s 106 & Park. “Suffocate” (over 480,000 sales) rose to #2 on the R&B chart and bulleted inside the Top 20 on the Hot 100.

‘Back Of My ‘Lac’ (released October 2007) had the distinction of debuting at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. One year later, J. Holiday was nominated for his first American Music Award as Favorite Male Artist in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues category. He was also nominated for a BET Award as Best Male R&B Artist. Back Of My ‘Lac sales to-date are over 750,000 units.

J’s MySpace website, www.myspace.com/jholiday with over 18.2 million profile views, 370,000 friends, and 28.8 million total music plays, is the go-to destination for fans to explore pages of photos, music downloads, blog entries, and videos, as well as to post messages to the artist. In addition to full-length versions of “Bed” and “Suffocate,” the site features the full version of “It’s Yours,” which has already received over 133,000 plays.

22-year-old singer/songwriter J. Holiday’s fate took a turn when he hooked up with Corey Green and A&R veteran Anthony “T.A” Tate of Music Line Group (Ciara, Teairra Marie) which led straight to a deal at the Capitol Tower in Hollywood. A preachers’ son, raised up in the church by a hardworking mother, J. is a classic rhythm and blues storyteller in the tradition of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway, and Al Green. They were the foundations of J’s soul when he was a teenager negotiating the mean streets of DC.

But he was also caught up in the hip-hop rhymes of Jay-Z and OutKast. Add to that his fascination with ’90s R&B vocal groups Boyz II Men, H-Town, and Jodeci, and a portrait emerges of the artist as a young man. “I can say that I’ve lived that street life,” he testifies. “The streets are not anything to glamorize. I’m trying to let my people back home know that I’m with them. DC has a lot of talent and I’m just trying to show people that we are here.”

Singersroom.com sums up: “This gifted and ambitious DC vocalist’s only purpose is to bring good music back to R&B. His music is more than just a face or a name, his music is about passion, loyalty and real struggles. Not only is this preacher’s son true to himself, his music is sure to touch those who are looking for a fresh start, an honest voice and real R&B music. The J. Holiday movement has just begun and fans of all ages can expect positive messages, real love songs and real issues.”

At the age of 23, Marcus Mitchell is not only a rising saxophone artist in smooth jazz, he has made history.

As CEO and President of 24th Music, a division of MHM Entertainment Group – a multi-faceted entertainment company based out of Maryland, Mitchell made history in 2006 as the youngest independent executive to be on the voting committee for the Grammy Awards.

In 2005, Mitchell nationally released his debut album, Jumpin’, under his own label – 24th music. 2007 marks the release of his much anticipated effort, R&R out on June 19th (Nationwide), featuring the legendary Jeff Lorber.

This young lion has fearlessly worked alongside the likes of Paul Taylor, Peter White, Kim Waters, Destiny’s Child, Mike Phillips, the Rippingtons (featuring Russ Freeman) and more. A tireless road dog, Mitchell continues to appear as a headliner for clubs such as at the legendary Blues Alley Jazz Club in Washington, D.C.

With talent and poise beyond his years, the sky is the limit for this rising star.

“With the tone and playability similar to Boney James or Mike Phillips, Marcus H. Mitchell is bringing saxy back on his new CD R&R.” – Smoothjazz.com
