Fyfe Dangerfield and producer Adam Noble say it was the fastest and most fun track to record during the album sessions. There is no comment as to whether the presence of fine wines during the session played a part in this good cheer – we’ll let you judge for yourself when you hear Fyfe’s lively vocal performance – but nevertheless this free download seems like the proper spirit in which to preview the album.

Speaking of which, every track on ‘Fly Yellow Moon’ sounds different. The idea was to record as many songs as possible in the time available, so everything from full-on pop to stripped-down balladry has found its way into the final tracklisting.

As such there was no room, or need, for preciousness, for example, the piano on “When You Walk in the Room” was recorded as a demo at Dangerfield’s parents’ house in Ludlow, Shropshire, on the family piano that’s been kicking around for decades. It sounded right, so it stayed. That same carefree spirit carries through the entire album.

Last night Dave and I attended the Roy Orbison Birthday Party celebration at the Gibson Guitar Studio in London.

There was a tribute show in honor of the late singer, with bands and artists performing songs written by Roy Orbison. Barbara Orbison, sons Alex and Roy Jr. along with 19 new artists and friends from around the world celebrated the life and music of one of music’s biggest legends.

It was a pleasant surprise seeing Fyfe Dangerfield from Guillemots there, who we were happy to share a table with, along with Guillemots drummer Greig Stewart. Fyfe performed a superb rendition of “Only The Lonely”.

We took quite a few pictures…I went a little crazy with the camera, but with all the other photographers there taking pictures, it felt natural to join in with the other flashes going off for each act.

The event was supported by Epiphone in celebration of the upcoming launch the new Epiphone 12 String ‘Pretty Woman’ acoustic guitar – the Epiphone acoustic guitar was originally used by Roy when he penned that song. Other sponsors on the night include BMI, Denzyl Feigelson and his team at AWAL (Artists Without A Label).

Over 30 artists have recorded one of their favourite Orbison songs for an iTunes only album called ‘Roy Orbison Under the Covers’ which will be released worldwide from Monday 27th April, 2009.

After the show Dave, Greig Stewart and I went to a club somewhere in London. Greig and Dave sat in with an impromptu band that included Seb from Keyboard Choir on sax and keyboard, Dave played harmonica and Greig on drums. I wanted to sing, but didn’t know how to go about getting the mic away from the singer. Oh well! We ended up at Guillemots studio after a great night of live music, which ended in my first card game of Snap.

Gigbeth is Birmingham’s biggest celebration of music. From November 6th-8th, 2008, Gigbeth will host a diverse lineup of established artists such as Guillemots, The Young Knives and The Sugarhill Gang alongside breakthrough acts The Keyboard Choir, and Iain Woods, set in the inspirational environs of the Digbeth creative district – like Birmingham’s very own Glastonbury.

Channel4’s 4Talent, which helps the UK’s creative people in TV, comedy, film, documentary, new media and radio find their way through the industry mire, is proud to host a stage at Gigbeth 2008.

The 4Talent Stage at Gigbeth on the 8th November, at the Dragon Bar (Barfly) in Birmingham will feature some of the leading lights of new music in the UK. The lineup includes krautrock noise merchants Einstellung, Oxford-based electronica ensemble Keyboard Choir, The Icarus (noise-hip shoegaze-hop), Brum-based minimalist piano protégé Richard Batsford, classical-meets-grime and dubstep art school terrorist Iain Woods & The Psychologist, plus an IDM/electro DJ set from ace club night Robot vs Dinosaur.

4Talent commissioning editor Catherine Bray will be on hand all evening to take press kits and promo CDs from local bands who would like their music to be considered for use on 4Talent podcasts and videos.

Einstellung

Einstellung have close associations with Digbeth. The band’s rehearsal studio is in the middle of the changing industrial landscape and they are no strangers to the many Digbeth venues.

Andrew Moscardo-Parker (guitar) said:
“There are some great venues around Digbeth – lots of character in all of them and we’ve played many of our gigs in the area. I think it’s really good that Gigbeth focuses around Digbeth – it shows that there are different creative areas in Birmingham”.

Einstellung’s album ‘Wings Of Desire’ (Capsule Recordings) will shortly be released as a double vinyl set in a gatefold sleeve designed by Birmingham artist Lucy McLauchlan (Beat 13).

The Icarus

The ICARUS was born from a need to create music. A need to experiment with lyrics, structure and instrumentation. A need to push convention and explore personal space. In a world where commodity is king, war is conversation and religion is hypocrisy, The ICARUS’ message has never been more urgent.

Former art school student and panic attack-plagued genius Iain will be bringing his unique voice, sound and aesthetic to the stage with the help of scratch DJ Jay Roberts and the ‘Sectioned’ String quartet.

Iain has been bigged up by Tom Robinson on his BBC 6Music Introducing show and has been Shortlisted for the Channel 4 Talent awards in the music category. His photographic and conceptual works have appeared in group and solo exhibits in London and around the UK.

Will Young is punching up some big numbers with new single “Changes”. After an incredible 10,000 plays on UK radio, the track is #1 in the national airplay chart and #4 in the regional airplay charts. We’re expecting a top ten chart entry this weekend, with CD, video and digital bundle formats still to come on Monday. Listen out for Will on Jonathan Ross’ Radio 2 show this weekend. He also plays London’s Cadogan Hall next Thursday September 25th, 2008.

Stereophonics‘ new single “You’re My Star” received an exclusive first spin on Chris Moyles’ breakfast show Wednesday morning. Kelly was on top form despite coming straight from the band’s show at L.A.’s Henry Fonda theatre. Just a few more stops to go on the North American tour now, with the UK tour kicking off in December.

Primal Scream were the big winners at last night’s Vodafone Live Music Awards, scooping two prizes: “Best Live Act” and “Outstanding Contribution to Live Music”.

Mark Ronson, modelling a fantastic new pair of specs, walked away with “Best Live Male”, while Will Young and Primal Scream got the night’s biggest cheers for their performances.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were also winners last night, as the acclaimed duo were awarded “Album of the Year” and “Group of the Year” at Nashville’s Annual Americana Music Awards.

Anyone spotted Bill Bailey in the dole queue yet? Mark Ronson has pinched his seat on Never Mind The Buzzcocks for the new season opener, airing Thursday October 2nd on BBC2. Mark was great fun when he appeared as a guest in the last series, this should be even better.

Ship ahoy! Martha Wainwright is preparing for her October UK tour with a trip to Greenland, courtesy of the Cape Farewell project. Joining a crew that includes KT Tunstall, Feist, Jarvis Cocker and Robyn Hitchcock, Martha will see the impact of global warming at close quarters. New single “Comin’ Tonight” is out November 3rd, 2008.

Never ones to be outdone, Guillemots are planning a bit of potholing on their upcoming UK tour. The band play a series of unconventional November dates in caves, libraries and converted cinemas. Before then, it’s Wednesday’s premier of Simon Pegg’s new film How To Lose Friends & Alienate People, with the band playing the rooftop after party at Shoreditch House. New double A-side single “Kriss Kross / Clarion” is out Monday.

Teddy Thompson starts his UK tour next week, playing four headline dates before heading off to join James Blunt on his October arena tour. More Teddy headline dates coming up in January.

We think Aimee Mann should be made an honorary Englishwoman, after listing Elton John and Boddingtons as two of her greatest passions on ITV1’s “Soundtrack To My Life” last night. She gave a great interview, and also performed “Freeway” from her latest album. “@#%&! Smilers”. Look out for UK headline dates in October.

Aimee’s not the only one recognising her heroes – our very own Paolo Nutini is one of only twelve Celtic fanatics featured in the club’s forthcoming “Celtic Opus”. Half a metre square and weighing in at a massive 30kg, you’re going to need a big coffee table for this one!

Finally, look out for Dave Edmunds‘ greatest hits album out Monday September 22, 2008. He also performs as a special guest at Joe Brown’s 50th anniversary concert, taking place Wednesday at the Royal Albert Hall.

After a triumphant summer of festivals and four spectacular dates with R.E.M., the perpetually inventive Guillemots return this Autumn with an ambitious national tour.

Beautifully fusing film and music in sixteen of the of the UK’s most intriguing alternative venues, November’s ‘Fishbone For A Drink’ tour confirms Guillemots’ reputation as pop’s true trailblazers.

As well as theatres and concert halls, the Brit and Mercury-nominated quartet will perform in a Cornish cave, Lancaster’s main public library and a converted cinema right in the heart of Edinburgh – a unique program of events such as only Guillemots could offer.

Fyfe said, “We want to get to places that are off the usual touring circuit that’s reeled out, and really mix around the type of venues we’re at each night. It makes it more fun for us and audiences too. And the set will be different as well. We’ll definitely be trying out something we’ve never played live before.”

The ‘Fishbone For A Drink’ tour also reunites the band with film events company Future Shorts. Building on their successful re-scoring of David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’ at this year’s Latitude Festival, each show will commence with a selection of short films re-scored live by the band – adding an entirely new audiovisual dimension to the Guillemots live experience.

These unmissable November dates are preceded by a colourful new double A-side single, “Kriss Kross” / “Clarion”, released September 22nd, 2008 on Polydor. Available as digital download and strictly limited edition numbered vinyl, the single brings together two of the stand-out tracks from the band’s inspired second album ‘Red’.

Led by Fyfe Dangerfield and featuring the talents of Magrao, Aristazabal Hawkes and Greig Stewart, Guillemots are one of the most inventive voices in UK pop.

In addition to their full UK tour, the band headline Orange Rockcorps alongside Busta Rhymes later this month.

Here’s the new video for Guillemots‘ latest single “Kriss Kross” from their album, ‘Red’.

The video was directed by none other than their guitarist MC Lord Magrao!

From Fyfe, “We’ve always meant to put out a double A-side at some point ‘And we couldn’t decide which of ‘Kriss Kross’ and ‘Clarion’ should be the next single, so now seemed like the right time to do both”.

The single will initially be available as a four-track digital bundle, including the new video directed by Magrao on Sept 22nd, then a beautiful VERY limited edition 10” vinyl following on October 6th. There will only by 500 numbered copies in beautiful packaging that features the masks, that Greig made used in Magrao’s Kriss Kross video.

As well as Kriss Kross and Clarion, which both appear with alternative edits to those on the album “Red”, the release features two previously unreleased tracks. The first is the band’s frenzied Radio 1 cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold”, The second is a brand new song, “Fishbone For A Drink”, written in a soundcheck at Latitude Festival this year and hastily recorded soon afterwards. it is rough, stripped-down and with a distinctly menacing undertone running through, it’s not quite like anything Guillemots have recorded before, and provides a glimpse of the way things might sound on their next album.

Written by the Guillemots – Fyfe Dangerfield, Magrao, Aristazabal Hawkes and Greig Stewart – “Falling Out Of Reach” was co-produced by the band alongside their longstanding engineer Adam Noble (George Michael, U2 and Paul McCartney).

Blissfully romantic, “Falling Out Of Reach” is a rich string laden ode to the unrequited. Building into an unrestrained and utterly emotive chorus, the track epitomises the bands ability to write clever, honest and completely unique modern love songs.

The accompanying video features Sir Ian McKellen in what is without doubt one of the bands best videos to date.

Later this year the band embarks on a full UK tour before supporting R.E.M. on their August stadium tour.

“All You Need Is Me” is among a handful of new songs to have graced Morrissey’s set list over shows in recent months and was performed earlier this year on Later With Jools Holland along-side “Something Is Squeezing My Skull”, “That’s How People Grow Up” and the classic “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys”.

The “All You Need Is Me” single formats will feature new songs as exclusive b-sides.

“My Dearest Love” and “Children In Pieces” were recorded in LA with multi-award winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla who has won Oscars for his scores for the films Brokeback Mountain and Babel and Baftas for his scores for Babel and The Motorcycle Diaries. They feature additional production and were mixed by Jerry Finn, producer of 2004’s widely acclaimed ‘You Are The Quarry’ (a #2 album in the UK).

A third b-side, a cover of David Bowie’s “Drive-in Saturday” recorded live at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, Nebraska in May 2007, completes the set.

Finn has also produced the ‘A’ side “All You Need Is Me” and is currently finishing production of Morrissey’s new studio album, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2006’s #1 ‘Ringleader Of The Tormentors’ which is due for an Autumn 2008 release. ‘Greatest Hits’, spanning Morrissey’s 20 year solo career, is out now on Decca/Polydor and features 9 top 10 singles amongst its 15 tracks.

Sir Ian McKellen – or Gandalf from Lord of the Rings as he’s known to many – is starring in Guillemots‘ new video for their single, “Falling Out of Reach”!

How cool is that?

Another cool thing is that in the Sky News video interview, there’s a short clip from Guillemots’ “Trains To Brazil” video, which I’m in (”playing” clarinet on stage). I’ve got something in common with Sir Ian McKellen – we’ve both been in Guillemots videos!

I’ve been listening to their new ‘Red’ album, and “Falling Out of Reach” is one of my favorite songs off of ‘Red’, along with “Kriss Kross” and “Big Dog” and “Get Over It” and “Last Kiss” and…well you can see where I’m going with this. The whole album is brilliant, and I’m NOT just sayin’ it because I appeared in one of their videos.

“A young relative of mine, who’s a fan of the Guillemots took me along to a concert of theirs in London and I really took to them, I really liked the music,” Sir Ian McKellen tells Sky News.

“I heard about this video for the new song, which I really like and I happen to have nothing better to do, and it’s quite near home, so I dropped in, and here I am.”

It’s not the first pop video cameo for the actor. In 1988, he starred as a vampire in the promo for Heart by the Pet Shop Boys.

‘Red’, Guillemots’ second studio album, is released by Polydor this week.

Next single “Falling Out of Reach” is scheduled for release Monday 26 May, 2008 on CD and 7″ vinyl to coincide with a nationwide tour. Check out the Guillemots tour dates!

Fyfe Dangerfield’s voice was on form, sailing through the high notes – and with Fyfe the notes do tend to get pretty high. Aristazabal Hawkes (Arista) sounded great on bass, MC Magrao, the coolest cat in town on guitar, and of course Greig Stewart, one of my favorite drummers, worked his magic on the skins.

I should have taken more care to write down their set list, but they played songs from ‘Through the Window Pane’ and their new album, ‘Red’. There is a contrast between the two albums, and for me that’s a good thing. They’ve definitely not stuck to the same format for the sophomore release, and I’ll be waiting in anticipation for the third.

Songs played from ‘Red’ included new single, “Get Over It”, “Kriss Kross”, their ‘Justin Timberlake-esque’ “Big Dog”, slow number “Words” and “Standing On The Last Star”. The more familiar selections from ‘Through the Window Pane’ included “Made-Up Lovesong”, “Trains To Brazil”, “Through The Windowpane”, “Annie, Let’s Not Wait” and the stand out song of the night, “Sao Paulo”.

Support acts included our very own Tommo (from Band Weblogs Podcast Show amongst numerous other things!) and a solo Norwegian singer/guitarist Ida Maria, without her full band due to the UK storms and plane delays.

It was great catching up with the Guillemots after the show. They were taking it easy, with one more show left of their three night mini-tour, which ended last night at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London.

For those who weren’t able to make it to one of the March shows, don’t fret – there are more to come in May/June 2008.

It’s too difficult for me to compare Guillemots’ ‘Red’ album to any other CD that I’ve listened to, which is a great accomplishment for a band. The songs are lush and varied. There’s high energy pop, R&B, interesting changes within songs and sultry, intimate ballads, that when listening, my imagination takes me to a dark, smoke filled room.

The instrumentation on ‘Red’ is daring and experimental – which could have been a concern for all involved, however, old and new fans alike will be introduced to a brilliant Guillemots album, complete with talented musicians, excellent songwriting along with soulful vocals and smooth harmonies. Highly recommended. – Jenny May

Dave Tommo from BandWeblogs.com had some questions for Guillemots drummer Greig Stewart, in our second series of questions with Greig.

Dave Tommo: What are you looking forward to the most with the release of your new album, ‘Red’?

Greig Stewart: I like playing festivals. It’s not like touring where you are out for a few months at a time. You can be at home through the week and weekends are party time. Then you get the rest of the week to recover. Also I have an 8-month-old baby which means I’m home through the week with her.

How did you come up with the name ‘Red’ for the album?

Fyfe came up with it. He felt Red can mean a lot of different things.

Does Arista play the drums on one of the tracks? Which one and how did that come about?

The song is “Take me home”, it’s the last song on the album. Arista and Fyfe just started playing together in the studio. It sounded really good. So there was no need to do it again. She plays very well.

Are there any strange percussion instruments used on the album?

A few. There are bats. Fyfe has a bat detector, which picks up their sound, which human ears cannot hear. It was really strange as it was in the right tempo and pitch for that song (Big Dog). Also on “Big Dog” there is a tour bus engine that has been processed into a beat. Two silver platter trays that have been dropped from a high stairwell to get a double crash (on Last Kiss).

Who does your hair?

Funny one, Dave.

Can we expect anything different on your next tour?

We only start rehearsals next week. So no massive thoughts on that one yet.

What’s the story behind the masks that you use on stage occasionally?

They were used for a show my wife was in a few years ago. Mc found them pretty fascinating. He also used them in a short film he made last summer.

How else have you been involved in the making of ‘Red’?

When we were demoing songs, the band would record onto our laptops. A drum track from these sessions made it on to the album, which I’m quite proud of. Adam Noble who is a very good, experienced engineer asked how we got such a good drum sound. So we took great interest on how to mic things up. Also I made a few big meals for everyone. Think the best was: cumberland sausage and garlic mash. That went down well but then the session kinda finished as everyone ate too much and couldn’t really play. The rest of involvement would be my imagination as with everyone else involved in the making of Red. The imagination runs riot which can be a blessing but also hinderance.

Have you experienced any ghostly weirdness while recording the LP in your studio?

No ghostly encounters. Just a few whack out moments when we’ve been in the studio too long. Then you slightly lose touch with what’s going on outside.

We asked you before what your favourite song is to play live and you had answered “Big Dog” and “Standing on the Last Star”. Has that changed?

Not sure yet as we only start rehearsals next week. At the moment its probably “She’s Evil” sung and written by Mc. Its got an Electronic beat which I can weave in and out of. Great fun to play and we all get to shout.

Which festivals are you playing at this year?

Not sure yet. I guess most of the ones we didn’t play last year.

In your opinion, what is the best song ever written?

“No End” by Sandy Denny.

Are there any guest musicians on your next tour?

We are looking to replace our sax player Alex Ward as he is busy with his solo stuff. ‘Alex Ward and the dead ends’ and ‘Dead days beyond help’. We are looking for a girl who can sing backing vox and play sax also.

What’s the best way to get to sleep on the tour bus?

I-Pod after a hot shower.

The Mercury nominated Guillemots are set to play three must see ‘taster’ shows in March 2008 – Ritz, Manchester (March 9th), Academy, Oxford (March 10th) and London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire (March 11th).
