VH1 has named singer-songwriter Lenka as its latest “You Oughta Know” artist, with a campaign kicking off in early October.

Her self-titled debut album became available on iTunes last week and in just a few short days had jumped into the iTunes’ Top 10 Albums chart.

The album will be featured on vh1.com’s “The Leak” beginning today and AOL will host a listening party for it next week. Lenka will play a special show at New York’s Mercury Lounge September 23rd, 2008 coinciding with the album’s wide release, and she’ll make her U.S. network television debut the following night on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

She’s also confirmed to perform on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (October 16th) and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (October 22nd).

Lenka, former vocalist for the acclaimed Australian electronic/ambient band Decoder Ring, continues her residency at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, performing each Thursday in September 2008. On September 27th she’ll be the primary support for Juliana Hatfield’s show at L.A.’s Café Largo and she’ll join the Hotel Cafe Tour on November 11th. In between, she’ll play a couple of shows in her native Australia (see below for full itinerary).

“The Show,” the lead track from Lenka’s album, is climbing the charts at radio and 476,700 copies of the song were downloaded last week when it was featured as iTunes’ “Single of the Week.”

As noted by People’s recent “As Heard On TV” column, it’s been featured in Old Navy’s back-to-school television advertising campaign and in promotional spots for the hit ABC comedy “Ugly Betty”. It’s also been tapped for the Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies’ film Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging.

The video for “The Show,” directed by Moh Azima, received its online premiere earlier this month on iMeem.com. You can check it out here:

Two other Lenka songs have garnered early attention as well: “Don’t Let Me Fall” was heard in the season premiere of the The CW’s new series “90210″ and Lenka’s haunting cover of Modest Mouse’s “Gravity Rides Everything” was recently featured as Entertainment Weekly’s “Download This” pick and by Vanity Fair’s “Hot Tracks” (along with “The Show”). The songs are available now on iTunes.

Lenka, who is a Clear Channel NEW! Artist for September (AAA format), has already appeared in the pages of Marie Claire and Teen Vogue and will be featured in upcoming issues of Blender and Spin as well as an episode of vh1.com’s “My Play List.”

“The song ‘This Lonely Love’ is about being in love with a song, or with the sound and feeling and spirit in someone’s singing voice,” she says. “So with the video I wanted to show myself as all alone, with only music as my companion.”

Juliana Hatfield has unveiled details of her upcoming memoir, entitled When I Grow Up, slated to be published by John Wiley & Sons on September 29th, 2008.

The book follows the renowned singer/songwriter’s much-anticipated new album, ‘How To Walk Away’, due from Juliana Hatfield’s own Ye Olde Records on August 19th.

At turns wryly funny and heartbreakingly sincere, When I Grow Up offers Hatfield’s inimitable perspective on her remarkable 20-year career. Penned during her recent year-long sabbatical from music, the book chronicles her extraordinary journey, from her teenage beginnings in the pioneering indie-rock combo, Blake Babies, and iconic rise to alternative solo stardom, to the past decade’s stunning streak of increasingly mature, critically acclaimed albums.

When I Grow Up takes readers backstage and behind the scenes of a life lived in rock ‘n’ roll, detailing the origin of her songs, her battles with clinical depression, and her quest to find purpose after all of her dreams had seemingly come true. Throughout the book, Hatfield recounts her skyscraping highs and deep, dark lows in the same engaging voice her fans have loved for years – spirited, witty, and always candid.

Penning When I Grow Up led to a burst of creative energy that also spawned Hatfield’s 10th solo album, ‘How To Walk Away’. Produced by Andy Chase (of revered alt-rock/pop band Ivy), the album is among her best to date, featuring songs that are both layered and unhurried, bittersweet yet life-affirming. Hatfield is joined on the album by a number of friends made along the way, including Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs), Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne), and Tracy Bonham.

“Shining On,” a key track on How To Walk Away, is currently streaming at Hatfield’s MySpace page, located at www.myspace.com/julianahatfield.

In addition, her blog sees her writing about songs selected by fans from her sizable repertoire. “Read it at your own risk,” Hatfield warns. “Illusions may be shattered.”

Juliana Hatfield first came to prominence in her teens as a founding member of the legendary Boston indie-rock band, Blake Babies. After four independent albums with the group, Hatfield signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist and had a slew of modern-rock hits (including “My Sister,” “Spin The Bottle” and “Universal Heartbeat”). She left the label in 1998, signing to Zoe Records (a Rounder Records imprint) and releasing four well-regarded albums, including 2004’s In Exile Deo, named as one of that year’s 10 best albums by The New York Times’ Jon Pareles.

In 2005 Hatfield came full circle, back to full DIY independence, releasing Made In China (hailed as “her most urgent, refreshingly unpolished output in years” by Time Out New York) on Ye Olde Records, her own label. Ye Olde Records released Frank Smith’s Heavy Handed Peace and Love in 2007 as well as her collaboration with the band, Sittin’ in a Tree, a six-song EP.

Hatfield recently contributed “Back To Freedom,” an exclusive track recorded during the How To Walk Away sessions, to the Green Owl Compilation: A Benefit For the Energy Action Coalition.

Juliana Hatfield will preview songs from ‘How To Walk Away’, her 10th solo album in a remarkable 20-year-career, in a special show at Joe’s Pub in New York City on May 21st, 2008.

The record is scheduled for release on August 19th on Hatfield’s own label, Ye Olde Records (distributed via Redeye).

Produced by Andy Chase (of revered alt-rock/pop band Ivy) and recorded at Stratosphere Sound, the NYC studio co-owned by Chase, Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne) and James Iha (formerly of Smashing Pumpkins), ‘How To Walk Away’ features guests Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) on vocals, Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne) on guitar, Tracy Bonham (violin) and more.

The album, which contains some of Hatfield’s most candid writing ever, is evocative, layered, and unhurried. And yet, Chase has managed to retain her essential rawness of spirit, smoothing out some rough edges but not all, as evidenced by the loose, danceable “Now I’m Gone,” sung and played by Hatfield in one inspired improvisational take. Walking away – and the loneliness that sometimes results – is a recurring theme. But while the songs’ protagonists may be fatalistic, they are not without faith.

Even in an outwardly sad song like “Such A Beautiful Girl” (co-written by Jason Hatfield, Juliana’s brother), hope is not dead; the girl of the title waits patiently for a future that she knows, odds are, will be better than where she finds herself now.

Similarly, the bittersweet yet life-affirming “Shining On” – mixed by veteran hit-making producer David Kahne (Kelly Clarkson, Paul McCartney, Sugar Ray, the Strokes) – exhibits a hard-won resilience in the face of disappointment and betrayal.

Fans who visit Juliana Hatfield’s website and MySpace page (see below for links) can hear “Shining On” and check out the blog wherein she writes about songs selected by fans from her sizable repertoire. “Read it at your own risk – illusions may be shattered,” Hatfield warns.
