The Happy Hollows announce October release of highly-anticipated full length

Acclaimed Los Angeles trio The Happy Hollows release their debut full length in October 2009

The album, ‘Spells’ is a culmination of their work with producer and former Mighty Lemon Drops guitarist David Newton (The Little Ones, The Blood Arm), who also produced the group’s 2008 EP ‘Imaginary’.

Stream Full Album

The young group’s infectious and irreverent noise-pop has earned considerable following up and down the west coast, with their energetic and charismatic performances.

Vocalist/guitarist Sarah Negahdari wields ominous riffs and finger-tapped arpeggios while singing with a cherubic-yet-mischievous grin. Meanwhile, the agile rhythm section of Charles Mahoney (bass/vocals) and Chris Hernandez (drums/vocals) vault and lunge with precision.

Buy Music:

The Happy Hollows on amazon.com

Wired Magazine recently described Negahdari as “a killer hybrid of Kim Deal, PJ Harvey and Emily Haines” and added that “Negahdari has the guitar chops, explosive energy and winning sense of humor that should make The Happy Hollows one of the more interesting bands of our new millennium’s next decade.”

The BBC picked them as a band to watch for 2009, the Los Angeles Times has described the group’s sound as a “pugilistic mix of stinging guitars, turbulent rhythms, and shouted vocals” that “alternates between childlike experimentation and ferocious firestorm.” AllMusic wrote that the band’s “appeal is immediate” and LAist has labeled them “a must see!”

The Happy Hollows’ catchy yet dissonant sound is influenced by genres as disparate as 90’s college rock, garage punk, art rock, and 80’s pop. The band combines innovative song structures, surreal lyrics, and fiercely adept instrumentation to recreate reality into a jagged panorama of vibrant, kaleidoscopic collage. Listening to their music, one cannot help but see visions of a place oddly askew from the world we experience everyday, a parallel universe that is at once whimsical, demented, and ferocious.

Having born and bred their band in various corners of the L.A. music scene since forming 2006, The Happy Hollows played their first shows in Japanese restaurants, laundromats, and small local clubs. In their first year as a band, they snuck into a studio at night and, in two sessions, recorded Bunnies and Bombs, an EP that attracted the attention of the L.A.’s underground music scene.

After seeing them play a show, established L.A. heroes Silversun Pickups asked The Happy Hollows to open for them at The Wiltern and The Fillmore. In 2008, fellow art-rock outfit Deerhoof invited the Hollows to open for them on their album release shows at The Avalon and The Great American Music Hall.

In October 2009, The Happy Hollows will release their debut album entitled ‘Spells’.

The 14 tracks on ‘Spells’ encompass the wide range of structures and musical ideas that The Happy Hollows bring to the table.

The album’s opening track, “Faces”, begins with a crunchy guitar hook strummed by Ms. Negahdari on her Gibson SG. The song takes an unexpected twist with the introduction of the drums and bass, and yet another turn when Negahdari’s irresistible, chanteuse style vocals begin floating over the music. Track 3, “Silver”, is a gritty and danceable song that shows off Ms. Negahdari’s unconventional lead guitar technique. On track 5, “Lieutenant”, the band demonstrates their technical chops as well as their ability to compose songs with non-traditional structures. Two of the later songs on ‘Spells’, “Father Time” and “Turtle and Hare”, highlight the band’s more eerie and melodic side.

In summary, ‘Spells’ is an album which is at once catchy and innovative. It is gritty, loud, and ambitious, while not shying away from the use of melody and the employment pop sensibility. Written and recorded over a period of two years, it will certainly stand as one of the definitive statements of the Los Angeles and indie rock music scenes in recent memory.

“Riot Fest firmly established itself in 2006 as one of the best showcases for punk and underground music in the country.” – Jim Derogatis, Chicago Sun Times

Five years. What does it all mean? Five years equals 25,336 fans, over 150 bands, 946 stage dives, 4 a**hole bouncers, 2632 cases of beer, 172 hours in line, 1 FBI Sting, 23 business suits and too many broken ribs. That, my friends is something.

For a closer look at Riot Fests past, we’ve thoughtfully provided this great video:

Watch Riot Fest video:

Started in 2005, the men and women of Riot Fest strive to create a festival they would love to attend, with one eye on the legendary Chicago punk scene and the other on the bands that inspire them, with a special emphasis on reunited influential bands that all fans of punk and underground music grew up with.

Five years later, Riot Fest marches on in Chicago, their beloved hometown and announces their new Riot Fest West, three nights in Los Angeles!

While 2009’s entire line-up remains shrouded in mystery, a few of the mind-boggling choices for this year’s Chicago Riot Fest have been announced. Brace yourself.

Screeching Weasel, a seminal band from Chicago who took the ethos of the Ramones and added a bitter, witty twist will take the stage. NOFX will arrive from the North Bay with their explosive live show, drunken antics and anti-GOP agenda. Chicago represents with Alkaline Trio, who blossomed from the local scene and forged an international profile, releasing critically acclaimed albums. Seattle’s Murder City Devils are notorious for their drunken depravity while performing and their raw, lurid lyrics, which deal chiefly with rock n’ roll excess (especially drinking), truckers, sailors and women. Philadelphia’s satirical, snotty and irreverent The Dead Milkmen are known for their hit song, “Punk Rock Girl”, which was a favorite of MTV’s “Beavis and Butthead Show”. One of the original punk bands, the UK’s Cock Sparrer will return to Chicago for the first time, since, well, no one can remember when.

Riot Fest Chicago will occur October 7-11 2009 at Congress Theatre, Metro, Double Door, Subterranean and Cobra Lounge. A limited number of five day passes go on sale June 6th, for the low, recession-proof price of $99.00 – which will include 14 shows!

MySpace announces that the behemoth metal band Trivium will be playing a club show at the legendary Los Angeles rock club Whisky A Go Go on September 22, 2008 as part of MySpace’s Secret Show series. The Secret Show is a free, exclusive performance for the MySpace community.

Trivium are one of the most respected bands in metal, earning the esteem of legendary bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica, both of whom they’ve toured and played shows with. The Florida band will be previewing songs from their upcoming album ‘Shogun’, due out on Roadrunner Records on September 30, 2008.

Revolver named ‘Shogun’ as one of the most anticipated albums of 2008. Additionally, Rolling Stone deemed Trivium “…one of the few contemporary metal bands that matter.”

Fans of metal will be in for a real treat, as Trivium shows are known to be “off the hook” events where plenty of headbanging ensues! Further proof of the fact that Trivium were crowned “Best Live Band” at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards in 2006.

MySpace Music has organized more than 150 Secret Shows since the franchise launched in February 2006 with artists like Gnarls Barkley, The Offspring, Neil Diamond, Slayer, Franz Ferdinand, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs performing in cities around the world.

Ungdomskulen www.myspace.com/ungdomskulen

Ungdomskulen (youthschool in English) is a Norwegian rock band. Their sound is founded on bass, drums and guitar. Taken individually, the drum beats seem inspired by the city, the bass is syncopated and sonic, and the jazz-like guitar sounds as if it’s possessed by rock demons. And finally, there’s a light but authoritative male vocal on top.

Troy This www.myspace.com/troythis

“He’s the bastard child of urbanism & digitalism, a mixture of electro soul & amusing pop rock. His music awakes a lot of memories from the “Tape” days & his sex-dosed vocals & original music virtually resurrects moments only Janet Jackson could pull off successfully, making the cheesy fashionable again. There’s even a demo titled “Slap Kiss Beautiful Later” that could easily be mistaken for a “Michael Jackson & Darren Hayes” early unreleased duet session! But don’t get carried away with the comparisons here as it’s just merely a point out to a style or an era, ‘Troy This’ music has that ambiance that makes you feel familiar.” – OHHCRAPP.net

Los Angeles cult rock band Bluebeard has reformed and released it’s first album of new material in over 25 years, “Deluxe With Reverb.” Produced and published by new independent music label Shelter From the Storm Records, “Deluxe With Reverb” features a selection of new material, re-recorded and re-mastered songs from the band’s late-70s heyday, and a hard-charging cover version of INXS’ “Pretty Vegas.”

Bluebeard has been around for nearly 30 years and was a mainstay of the Southern California club scene in the 70s and 80s, playing dates with everyone from Van Halen to The Motels to Steppenwolf. They recently played a sold out appearance at L.A.’s Canyon Club, sharing a bill with Blue Öyster Cult. Their last full-length album, “Bad Dream,” was released in 1978 and is a treasured collector’s item among rock connoisseurs, with asking prices up to $500 per copy on on-line auction sites. Bluebeard received widespread critical acclaim in the U.S. (from the likes of Billboard Magazine, Cash Box, BAM and Radio Report), and was an underground favorite in Japan and Europe.

The tragic death in 2004 of Robert Barry Leech, the band’s original lead singer and creative force, led the remaining members to reunite in honor of his memory with a singular focus to once and for all bring their brand of rock & roll to the world. “Deluxe With Reverb” includes a tribute to the past via a rockin’ duet of The Rolling Stone’s classic “Paint It Black,” between Leech and new frontman Ellington Erin.

“Deluxe With Reverb” is commercially available now at iTunes, MSN Music, Napster, Sony Connect, Starbuck’s Hear Music, Rhapsody and other leading on-line music stores. A special edition CD, featuring three bonus tracks, is available for sale at Amazon.com.

“We intend to re-connect with Bluebeard’s core audience worldwide and introduce them to new fans via this new album,” said JP Fillet, Shelter From the Storm’s vice president of label operations. “Judging from the reaction of the standing-room-only all ages audience at their recent Canyon Club show, Bluebeard’s music has strong across-the-board appeal.”

About Bluebeard

Four of the original members of Bluebeard have been playing music together since the late 70’s. Bluebeard was originally formed by Barry Leech, Vincent Bitetti, Vincent Thomas-Penny, Gayle Hart and Danny Bogan. Producer and former Illinois-based One-Eyed Jacks bassist and keyboardist Barry Fasman was recruited for co-production duties, as well as keyboards and vocals. Former Siddhartha front man Elington Erin completed the lineup in 2005. The music of Bluebeard has been described as having elements of hard rock, art rock, and progressive rock. Here at Shelter, we have officially dubbed it “original classic rock.” The music has a late 70’s vibe with 80’s, 90’s and contemporary rock textures and influences. Promotional CDs for radio and press are available on an as needed basis from the company and radio stations signed up to Airplay Direct can access high quality, airplay ready songs at their website at airplay direct: Bluebeard. For the latest Bluebeard news and information, please visit www.bluebeardmusic.com
