Roll Up, Roll Up! The Circus is arriving at Matter.

Prepare to be awestruck, titillated and entertained as Circus, Jodie Harsh’s infamous club night rolls into Matter at the o2 for one night only, on 4th July 2009.

This year, Circus is officially teaming up with Pride London to present a host of spectacles much bigger, better and more outrageous than you’ve ever witnessed on a dance floor.

With a melee of special guest DJs and entertainers across two huge rooms of pandemonium and colour, this big top couldn’t be further removed from the carnival you visited as a child.

In it’s three years of delighting clubbers, who travel far and wide to join the Circus, the night has always boasted big name DJ’s. Tonight is no exception. In fact, it’s the biggest line-up Circus has ever seen and undoubtedly Matter’s most diverse and colourful:

Siouxsie (DJ): To call this lady “legendary” is surely an understatement: Siouxsie’s singing career has spanned a breathtaking three decades since taking to the stage in late 1976. Siouxsie’s debut single with the Banshees, “Hong Kong Garden”, was a massive hit in 1978 and kick started a torrent of 20-plus top twenty singles, 15 critically acclaimed albums and a musical journey that is second to none. In 2006 Siouxsie recorded her first solo album – the resulting “Mantaray” was heralded as possibly her best ever and contained the storming “Into A Swan” and “Here Comes That Day” singles. Siouxsie is one of the most groundbreaking and iconic females in popular culture and has proved an inspiration for an army of followers and admirers. Now, armed with her own personal record collection, Siouxsie has chosen Circus as the setting to begin her DJ career with an exclusive set at Matter.

Frankmusic (DJ): It goes without saying that 2009 is Frankmusik’s year. The electro singer, producer, disc jockey and remixer is near to completing his debut album co-produced by Stuart Price – who has previously weaved his magic on albums by The Killers and Madonna – while what little time he has left over has been given to remixing the likes of CSS and Mika. An established DJ, Frankmusik has toured the world spinning platters that matter and we’re excited to welcome him to the Circus.

Kissy sell Out (Live): He may have remixed the likes of Mark Ronson, Sugababes, Gwen Stefani, Groove Armada and Calvin Harris, and DJ’d the world over with his Kissy Klub, but tonight the Sell Out himself is performing tracks from his debut album Youth live with his band.

Secret PA (Live): Now announced as girl of the moment…VV Brown!

Jodie Harsh (DJ): Dubbed the ‘real Queen of England’, Harsh has taken drag to pop cultural levels not seen since the eighties and is an established DJ across the UK, and indeed the world. Jodie is currently in the studio working on remixes for various music outfits and has recently worked closely with both Larry Tee and William Orbit. Jodie is resident DJ at Manumission and is about to embark on a world tour with them. As the promoter of Circus, Jodie Harsh is your ringleader this evening, and promises many exciting surprises.

Dan Gillespe Sells (DJ): As the lead singer of The Feeling, Dan can claim to be in one of the UK’s most successful indie pop bands of the last decade. They have toured the word, swept up at award shows and had ten singles hit the charts in the UK. Dan is also an accomplished DJ with an arsenal of music.

Kris di Angelis (DJ): Resident DJ at Circus, remixer for Ladyhawke, Roisin Murphy and Lily Allen, and this summer’s new resident at Space in Ibiza, this Defected-signed artist is the new name to drop on the electro circuit. Learn it, because you’ll be hearing it often.

Room 2: Gutterslut feat. Tom Stephan, Per QX, Elliot J Brown, Nic Fisher, Miss Crystal MC.

Tom Stephan (DJ): Tom, aka Super Chumbo, is one of the hardest working DJs in the industry flying all over the world to wow crowds with his unique electronic beeps and pieces. He juggles his DJ commitments with production and remix work for Missy Elliot, Goldfrapp, Pet Shop Boys and Kylie, as well as Eric Morillo, Roger Sanchez and Danny Tenaglia, while heading up his label ChumboMundo.

Circus is at Matter on 4th July 2009, from 10pm – 6am.

Tickets available from www.ticketweb.co.uk

Leonard Cohen review, O2 Arena, London – 14 November 2008

Have you ever seen Annie Hall? If yes, then you’ll recall the scene where Alvy dates a music journalist played by Shelley Duvall and they emerge from a Stones concert, Duvall’s character rhapsodising about how the gig was ‘transplendent’. Well before you go any further, I should confess: that was me, after witnessing the legend that is Leonard Cohen in London.

After a hellish journey from Oxford to London and then to North Greenwich, we found ourselves slightly late, hungry and cranky. Now anyone who knows me will testify to my horrendous hunger grumps. So it’s no mean feat that three hours later, I was in seventh heaven. Like Leonard advised, we forgot the past and were transported to another place by a performance which is best described as sublime.

Dressed in a pin-striped suit and rakishly tilted fedora, Cohen looked ice cool. He and his band gave the appearance of a thirties era group of gangsters, their iconic appearance matched in panache by a set in which it was clear Cohen meant every word of his poetic and mystical lyrics. A magnificent “Hallelujah” was a case in point.

The laughter lines around his eyes may have belied his 73 years, but the way he skipped on and offstage, teasing us with yet another encore, hinted that he took a youthful glee in the pleasure he generated in the adoring crowd. Cohen acknowledged his absence from the touring circuit with his usual charm and a humorous eloquence: ‘It’s been a long time’, he admitted, following this with a wry, ‘fifteen years, I was just a kid with a crazy dream’.

This self-awareness and gentle humour inflected Cohen’s every gesture with a disarming humility and grace, which was evident in the generous relationship he shared with his band. Collaborator and singer in her own right Sharon Robertson was given solo duties on “Anthem”, showcasing a seemingly effortless and creamy, fulsome voice. Cohen also afforded backing vocalists The Webb Sisters a spot, with Hattie on harp adding an angelic quality to harmonies evocative of Alison Krauss or the Carter Family. Cohen stood back in the shadows for their stints, literally taking his hat off to them and holding it to his heart in a respectful and gentlemanly manner which indicated he was as beguiled by their performances as the rest of us.

Cohen’s entire band were nothing short of flawless, and in the cavernous and corporate space that is the O2 the entire audience were drawn like magnets to the stage, spellbound by a set both flawless and utterly soulful – we could have been in an intimate and cosy jazz bar, such was the way Cohen held us in the palm of his hands. He’s a legend without even trying: dapper and iconic, his words and his philosophy get right to the heart of the human condition.

Given his advanced years and godfather like status in the annals of music, never more have lines such as ‘I was born like this, I had no choice/I was born with the gift of a golden voice’ and ‘I ache in the places I used to play’ seemed more pertinent and moving. It was an inescapable fact that we were in the presence of a true legend on Friday night and there was thankfully no sense of it being underwhelming, as so often the case with such feted figures – I feel genuinely honoured to have witnessed the man himself. Cohen proved an inspiring and elegant presence whose lyrics are an honest and, I would argue, necessary soundtrack to the revolutions of life in all it’s permutations. As he recited some of his poetry, I reflected that his words give no trite answers, but great comfort and hope.

I’ve never understood why people find the work of this wonderful man depressing; I see hope more than anything else in lyrics like ‘There is a crack, a crack in everything/That’s how the light gets in’. A rousing rendition of “Democracy” in the encore sums this up – both timely in the wake of the American Democrats victory as well as impassioned, it stirred the whole audience up irrespective of nationality. The beauty of Cohen’s songs are that they implore us to strive beyond the mundane towards a spiritual otherness much, much greater than the physical, whilst still embodying a deeply sensual quality. Seeing him live really encapsulated this power- as I looked around my companions I saw the same rapt expression in their eyes accompanied with a irresistible urge to sway and move in time with the movement of the music, mouthing the words to classics like “So Long Marianne” and “The Tower of Song” as if motivated by a deep collective unconscious.

Cohen’s performance was both gracious and professional; his deliciously rumbly voice has acquired an even greater patina of wisdom as he’s aged which made some tracks seem like sermons from a great sage. Highlights for me were the elegiac and tragical “The Partisan”, “In My Secret Life” and of course, “Hallelujah”, which moved me to tears – I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

A septuagenarian who still has the capacity to totally seduce both men and women with his song, he is truly a very special individual whom I still keep pinching myself to believe I’ve seen! What most impressed itself on me was how at peace with himself Cohen seemed; he joked that he’d explored the philosophy of religions and tried ‘prozac, effexor … ‘ and all number of medications, but found that ‘cheerfulness kept breaking through’!

He may have been talked into doing this tour, but he genuinely seemed to be enjoying it and in the unlikely event that any remaining dates are not already sold out, I would urge you to get along to a gig, whatever it takes (yes, even if that means leaving the country – he’s that good). Seeing Leonard Cohen was a life-defining experience and I don’t care how much hyperbole I’ve employed in this review – I will never forget the three hours of magic he gave to me.

Transplendent, just transplendent.

The Long Blondes will join Duran Duran as special guests for two of their forthcoming UK arena shows next month when the band play in London at the O2 Arena on Thursday July 3rd, 2008 and Birmingham’s NIA on Monday July 7th, 2008.

The Long Blondes are the latest artists to open for Duran Duran on their Red Carpet Massacre World Tour, which kicked off in March of this year in New Zealand and has so far taken in Australia, the Far East, Japan and the US – where most recently they were joined by Midlander newcomers Your Vegas.

Known for their unique, indie, punk rock sound, their alluring sense of style and their distinctive narrative lyrics, the Long Blondes are a five piece band who hail from Sheffield and have rapidly gained a legion of fans after their debut album ‘Someone To Drive You Home’, produced by former Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, went to #1 in the UK Indie charts. Their current record “Couples”, produced by uber cool electro DJ/producer Errol Alkan, mixes a wide range of bold musical ideas from disco to synth-pop and krautrock rhythms that help mold clean melodies and infectious choruses.

Fronted by the glamorous Kate Jackson, who has been featured in both the NME cool list and the Guardian’s Style section, the Long Blondes’ songs reflect a number of their influences: from 60’s pop, the Buzzcocks, and The Ramones, to post punk and new wave. According to the media, with their latest album they have managed to “turn two years of inter-band heartache into an ambitious, forward-thinking pop record that tops their debut by quite some distance.” “A sophomore album just as addictive and catchy as ‘Someone To Drive You Home’.”

Keyboardist Nick Rhodes said; “We are delighted that the Long Blondes will be joining us on stage in London and Birmingham, because we have all been huge fans since hearing their first album. The Long Blondes have that rare combination of style, chic, attitude and a unique sound that makes them stand out from the crowd. Kate Jackson’s vocals – particularly on songs like “Too Clever By Half” on the new record – are extraordinarily seductive and she often reminds me of my good friend Debbie Harry when Blondie first came on the scene.”

With their RED CARPET MASSACRE WORLD TOUR now well underway to rave reviews from both critics and fans alike, DURAN DURAN will shortly embark on a 21 date European summer run, taking in eleven countries in just under a month and a half. The 02 show in London, which comes two weeks into this leg of the tour, will be the band’s first in this venue and falls the day after a special collaborative one-off date that they have put together with long-time Duran-fan Mark Ronson, as part of the Smirnoff Experience series in France.

The four original members of Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and John Taylor, will be bringing a spectacular new production to British shores that will showcase their latest record, alongside all of the fan-favourites from their vast catalogue of hits. This will be not only be the first time that the band have performed at the O2 Arena in London, but also their first outing at both the Liverpool Echo Arena and the NIA in Birmingham.

The four 2008 UK shows are:

3 July O2 Arena, London
5 July Liverpool Echo Arena
6 July Nottingham Trent FM Arena
7 July Birmingham NIA

This upcoming leg of the tour will see the group’s first performances in the UK since the release of Red Carpet Massacre (Epic Records), which the band launched late last year with an unprecedented two-week Broadway residency in New York, and a one-night-only engagement, that was filmed for television at the Lyceum Theatre in London. In a bold move, Duran Duran performed their new record in its entirety to sold-out houses in both the UK and US, prior to the album’s global launch. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response from fans and critics alike, the band are now taking a specially tailored version of this three-act show on the road around the world.

RED CARPET MASSACRE marks an all-time creative high for the band members, who wrote and recorded this ground-breaking new album with producers Timbaland and Nate ‘Danja’ Hills, alongside today’s reigning king of pop, Justin Timberlake.

Garnering them some of their most impressive reviews to date, RCM has been described as “… their best album since Notorious” by British dance music bible, MIXMAG; and “another promising sign of the creative and commercial rebirth in the 21st Century of Duran Duran… without doubt the strongest thing they have put out since their 1992 comeback (The Wedding Album)” by the Sunday Times Culture. Writing for the Saturday Times Magazine, revered music critic Craig Mclean remarked: “‘Red Carpet Massacre’ is a collection of super catchy tunes that deftly marry the band’s proven way with a melody, with edgy hip hop and R&B influenced production from Timbaland.” Marie Claire magazine adds that it’s “a guilty pleasure indeed”.

During an illustrious career spanning three decades, Duran Duran have remained at the forefront of popular music, consistently pushing the creative envelope and breaking new ground. Since their inception, the band have sold over 70 million records, released countless hits, received numerous accolades, and have been presented with no fewer than five prestigious “Lifetime Achievement” awards (MTV Video Music Award, Q Magazine, The BRITS, Ivor Novello, Spanish Ondas).

With their ‘Red Carpet Massacre World Tour’ now underway, in support of the release of their 12th studio album, musical innovators Duran Duran have announced details of four special UK shows that will form part of an extensive 30 date European summer run.

Taking in Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham and London, the four original members of Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and John Taylor will be bringing a spectacular new production to British shores that will showcase their latest record, alongside all of the fan-favourites from their vast catalogue of hits.

This will be the first time that the band have performed at some of these venues – namely, their first outing in the O2 Arena in London, the Liverpool Echo Arena and the NIA in Birmingham.

The four Duran Duran 2008 UK shows are:

(Check local venue websites and www.duranduran.com for the most up to date information)

3 July O2 Arena, London 08444 775 775 or www.aeglive.co.uk
5 July Liverpool Echo Arena 08448 000 400 or www.accliverpool.com
6 July Nottingham Arena 08444 775 775 or www.aeglive.co.uk
7 July Birmingham NIA 08444 775 775 or www.aeglive.co.uk

Tickets for all of the shows on this upcoming UK run will go on sale to the general public on Friday 11th April, 2008 at 9.00 am GMT.

Prior to that, Duran Duran’s fan community will be offering both exclusive pre-sale opportunities and VIP packages for members starting at 2.00 pm GMT on Wednesday 9th April, 2008.

Members should visit www.duranduranmusic.com

This upcoming leg of the tour will see the group’s first performances in the UK since the release of ‘Red Carpet Massacre’ (Epic Records), which the band launched late last year with an unprecedented two-week Broadway residency in New York, and a one-night-only engagement, that was filmed for television at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

In a bold move, Duran Duran performed their new record in its entirety to sold-out houses in both the UK and US, prior to the album’s global launch. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response from fans and critics alike, the band are now taking a specially tailored version of this three-act show on the road around the world, starting in Australia and New Zealand, headlining the V Festival series, alongside their own shows.

‘Red Carpet Massacre’ marks an all-time creative high for the band members, who wrote and recorded this ground-breaking album with producers Timbaland and Nate ‘Danja’ Hills, alongside today’s reigning king of pop, Justin Timberlake.

Duran Duran have also confirmed that the critically acclaimed Sheffield indie band the Arctic Monkeys have remixed the bands second single “Skin Divers”. The track remixed by Arctic Monkey’s drummer Matt Helders is also rumoured to feature sampled vocals by Helders and lead singer Alex Turner.

The Arctic’s association with the eighties pop legends extends to the bands last album ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ in which they pay homage to several Duran Duran tracks on “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” where the band use the lyrics “Your name isn’t Rio, but I don’t care for sand” and on the acclaimed “Teddy Picker” which contains the lyrics “I don’t want your prayer, save it for the morning after”. Duran Duran’s John Taylor is one of their biggest fans. “I love them, they are one of the best bands to have come out in the last five years, probably the best.”

The band are also teaming up with Grammy award winning artist, producer and re-mixer Mark Ronson in the Summer.

Duran Duran’s spokesman said: “I can’t confirm any specific details at the moment, other than to say that they are definitely discussing working on some material together and a possible live collaboration for the Summer of this year, there is a mutual respect and admiration of each other’s work.” Ronson has also made no secret that he is a fan of Duran Duran, “I have a soft spot for some of that 1980s production and I love great bands from that era such as Duran Duran.”

Garnering them some of their best reviews to date, RCM has been described as:

“… their best album since Notorious” by British dance music bible, MIXMAG

“another promising sign of the creative and commercial rebirth in the 21st Century of Duran Duran…without doubt the strongest thing they have put out since their 1992 comeback (The Wedding Album)” by the Sunday Times Culture

Writing for the Saturday Times Magazine, revered music critic Craig Mclean remarked: “‘Red Carpet Massacre’ is a collection of super catchy tunes that deftly marry the band’s proven way with a melody, with edgy hip hop and R&B influenced production from Timbaland.”

Marie Claire magazine adds that it’s “a guilty pleasure indeed”

During an illustrious career spanning three decades, Duran Duran have remained at the forefront of popular music, consistently pushing the creative envelope and breaking new ground. Since their inception, the band have sold over 70 million albums, recorded countless hit records, received numerous accolades, and have been presented with no fewer than five prestigious “Lifetime Achievement” awards since 2002 (MTV Video Music Award, Q Magazine, The BRITS, Ivor Novello, Spanish Ondas).

Speaking backstage from their concert in Perth, Australia, Duran Duran front-man Simon LeBon said how much they were looking forward to performing again in England with a new production. “These are going to be extremely exciting shows for us”, he said, “taking a very different format to the last world tour we did in 2006. We are introducing a lot of new elements into the mix – both musically and in terms of the staging. We have been working on completely different arrangements for some of the older material and will be integrating a lot of our latest record into the performances. We need to keep things fresh – not only for ourselves, but also for our audiences, who can be assured of a lot of surprises with this new production.”

Led Zeppelin is set to play a reunion concert at the O2 Arena in London on – New Date: December 10th, 2007 (pushed back from the original date of November 26, 2007 due to Jimmy Page fracturing his finger). Apparently over 25 million people registered for the ballot which was initially going to close on September 17th, but has now been extended until midday Wednesday September 19, 2007 due to crashed servers and high demand. Successful applicants will be notified 01 October 2007. Tickets are £125.00 + booking fee.

Led Zeppelin band members showing up for the gig at the O2 Arena include singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones. This will be their first performance together in 19 years. Jason Bonham will replace his late father John Bonham on drums. This should be a major treat for all Led Zeppelin fans, and if you can’t get a ticket, then hopefully there will be suitable at home viewing options.

Along with Led Zeppelin, other bands and artists set to play include Pete Townshend, Foreigner, Paolo Nutini and Bill Wyman And The Rhythm Kings.

The show is a tribute concert to the late Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records and is being held to raise money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which pays for university scholarships in the UK, US and Turkey. Ahmet Ertegun was a close friend and conspirator to Led Zeppelin.

“Get your free Prince Planet Earth CD in the Mail on Sunday!”

I wonder if there are kids still selling papers on street corners yelling out the headlines over and over to passersby. If they still exist that’s what they will be yelling this Sunday in England.

If you haven’t already heard the news, Prince will be giving away his new ‘Planet Earth’ CD in the Mail on Sunday. That’s this Sunday (July 15th 2007) mind you. There’s been so much talk about this free CD that every Sunday for the last month or so, I’ve been stealing cheeky glances at the papers to see if the Prince CD has been packaged yet.

Actually the hype has reached its peak this week and now the story has been all over the major TV news channels. I admit – the hype has worked it’s magic and I will be taking a trip to my local Londis early Sunday morning to buy my copy of the Mail on Sunday.

The negativity surrounding Prince’s decision to give away his CD for free in what the Mail on Sunday calls “The World’s Greatest Newspaper Giveaway Ever”, has created what I would call an interesting intentional or unintentional publicity stunt.

There have been many stories and articles mentioning that Sony BMG in the UK is so upset with this move that they have “refused to handle the release”.

Music retailers in the UK are upset with the concept of giving away CDs for free in the paper, that this devalues music. Virgin is angry with HMV for deciding to stock the papers in their stores this Sunday.

This is certainly interesting dinner table conversation for music industry types. Going over the pros and cons of the move. Prince apparently wants to reach as many people as possible with his music – so at least his fans are happy.

(Update: I’ve listened to the CD – Read my review of Planet Earth!)

Watch Prince “Guitar” video preview:

From what I can hear from the “Guitar” single – so far the music sounds pretty cool to me.

Buy: Prince – Planet Earth on amazon.com.

Prince will be playing his 21-date “The Earth Tour” at the new O2 Arena in London beginning August 1st 2007. Apparently a copy of ‘Planet Earth’ will be included with each ticket sold for the O2 Arena dates.
