GiddyUp Music @ The Wheatsheaf, Oxford – review

GiddyUp Music Oxford at The Wheatsheaf

It was another great afternoon/evening of music downstairs at The Wheatsheaf in Oxford. The first act was Jenny and me as Purple May, and as the GiddyUp Music hosts we find it only right to be the opening musicians to get the ball rolling. Our set includes covers and a few songs of our own too. You can hear some of our music on our PurpleMay.com site.

Our musical set up is me on acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals and Jenny sings and is also PA engineer!

I compere the show and introduce Freddy Le Cragg who is new to our roster. Freddy sings and plays acoustic guitar. He performs some of his own songs mixed with unique cover versions, like “Ace Of Spades” by Motorhead and a slightly wacky version of Will Smith’s “Prince Of Bel-air” song. We like Freddy Le Cragg, he has a strong voice and a good sense of humour too.

Next up is Lewis Newcombe-Jones. We first saw Lewis busking on Cornmarket Street in Oxford a couple years ago and since then he has come and performed for us a number of times. His tone on the acoustic is warm and his songs are relaxing. His singing blends in with the warmth of his guitar.

Then the penultimate act to grace our show is Leigh ver Fuel, he of Beaver Fuel among other guises he plays under. Some of Leigh’s songs are a bit risqué but because his persona is so nice he sort of gets away with some of his bluer songs. Leigh is someone we like to welcome to play and he never disappoints.

Last and by no means least is Darren & The Tramp. Karen plays acoustic guitar and sings and Ian plays double bass and also sings on some of the songs. They perform an original and endearing style of music that draws you into their world, with witty lyrics and a captivating persona.

Thanks to everyone who played and also to all who came and made it a party. We look forward to the the next GiddyUp Music Show on Sunday 20th March 2016. See you there!

-Dave
