The other night I was up late watching Disturbing Behavior (1998) starring Katie Holmes. It’s a pretty good movie as far as thrillers go. ‘Teens turn bad’ type of flick. The soundtrack which includes The Flys’ “Got You (Where I Want You)” single is what caught my attention the most though. I hadn’t heard that song in years.

Throughout the movie I kept trying to remember who the band was that did that song. I was thinking that it sounded a little bit like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, but had to wait for the credits to roll to find out that it was The Flys. The singer has a great voice and I’ve always really liked that song. Of course me being the curious person that I am had to find out what has happened to the band since their “Got You (Where I Want You)” mega hit.

Watch The Flys video for “Got You (Where I Want You)”

After searching around the net a bit I found that The Flys, based in Hollywood, were together from 1994-2002. Adam Paskowitz is the singer with the cool voice and apparently now fronts his new LA rock band, Jetliner.

Jetliner is often compared to Queen and listening to their tracks up on Myspace I can hear why. Adam Paskowitz still sounds great and it’s good to hear him singing new songs. They’ve got a few quotes up on their Myspace page from some familiar names:

“[Jetliner] have been likened to Queen on their new album ‘Space Station’.” — Brian May, QUEENONLINE.COM

“I like bands that have a concept, a bit of drama. Queen is that sort of band; they had complex songs with a lot of parts to them. Jetliner is that kind of band too.” — Steve Jones of THE SEX PISTOLS

“…you’d think you were listening to Queen, with the piano and the harmonies. They also do a great cover of Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’.” — THE NEW YORK TIMES

Jeliner’s independent 12 track album release Space Station is available for purchase in their online store. You can catch them occasionally playing live around LA and the Sunset Strip. For more information go to their websites:

Late last night I was flipping through the channels and decided to check out The Sky at Night’s 50th Anniversary show with Sir Patrick Moore.

It was funny to see Dr. Brian May being interviewed on Mars in the year 2057! He talked about what life on Mars is like, showed viewers his personal items that he brought with him from Earth like Queen memorabilia and his Red Special guitar. He talked a bit about Lunar Live Aid which took place in 2046 – “shame about Roger, though”.

I’ve mentioned before about Brian May’s love for space and his book Bang! – The complete history of the Universe, so it was certainly apropos that he would be on the anniversary special. I thought his interview from Mars was hilarious and informative at the same time.
The first airing of the The Sky at Night’s Anniversary program was April 1st on the BBC with repeats at various times.

Luckily the BBC has the video of the anniversary show up on their site:

Ben Mills from the UK talent show The X Factor is set to release his debut single, “Beside You” on March 5, 2007 in the UK. The single is off of his new album, Picture Of You out on March 12th.

The debut releases come soon after Ben Mills finished third on The X Factor back in December that included talent judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh on the panel. Now signed to Sony BMG, this is quite an achievement for the singer with the big, soulful voice.

When Ben Mills performed Queen’s Somebody To Love while he was on The X Factor, it was at that point that I realized he really did have something special. That performance was amazing and it took a lot of courage and confidence to have pulled it off – acapella with a gospel choir. It was great to see the comments of support from his new found fans when I first wrote about Ben Mills on Band Weblogs, and now he’ll most definitely find himself overwhelmed with a new wave of admirers!

It looks as if Ben’s new record company will be keeping him very busy this year. It’s been announced on his website that he’ll be on tour later in 2007 which will follow his current X Factor Tour.

Watch Ben Mills’ new video for “Beside You” on his Myspace page!

Picture Of You tracklisting:

1. Beside You
2. Amazed
3. Nothing But The Truth
4. Maggie May
5. Anytime You Fall
6. Love Waits For Me
7. Somebody To Love
8. Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing
9. The Last To Fall
10. Bring It On Home To Me
11. Picture of You
12. With A Little Help From My Friends

“Somebody To Love” made it on to the album – pretty cool!

It seems like talent shows are popping up every time I turn on the TV lately. As a musician I shouldn’t really be promoting them as I feel there’s a lot of negatives associated with talent competitions on shows like American Idol and Pop Idol. After all – shouldn’t the record industry be taking more time out for musicians and bands who actually write and perform their own music as a living? There’s more that I could get into here, but that’s not the purpose of this entry. As with the bad, there is often good, and Saturday night I watched a performance on the UK based talent show X Factor that blew me away.

Ben Mills is one of the last three remaining acts on the X Factor and his latest performance was one of the most amazing covers of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” that I’ve ever heard. He, unlike most on the show, took a chance and decided to sing his version of the song acapella along with a choir. I really hope that this is released as a single – but I doubt that will happen as this rendition doesn’t comply with the norm of today’s typical pop song. Anyway, hopefully Brian May has heard this – I think he would approve.

Luckily the video of Ben Mills’ performance is on YouTube.

Watch Ben Mills performing Queen’s “Somebody To Love”

Personally, I don’t think the judges – Simon Cowell, Sharon Osborne or Louis Walsh give him enough credit for this amazing performance.

Astronomer and Queen guitarist extraordinaire Brian May has a blog called Brian’s Soapbox and his latest entry to date is about shooting Cliff Richard’s video for his new single “Move It”. The video was filmed at Wembley after one of Cliff’s shows and features Shadows drummer Brian Bennett and Brian May on guitar.

In his blog, Brian May also writes about Queen, politics, his passion for astronomy and the book that he’s recently co-authored with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, Bang! – The complete history of the Universe. The book documents the story of the big bang and how the universe has evolved since.

It’s amazing to see that one of the most important guitar players in rock history is willing to inform his fans in his own words what he’s up to on an almost daily basis. This just emphasizes the fact that with so many blogs cropping up around the internet there’s now a platform where the famous and not so famous can mingle together as equals.

Since his days in Queen, I’ve always been interested in Brian May’s other projects. Not only because I like Queen but I also get a kick out of the fact that we share the same last name! My first concert was working as security (believe it or not!) for Guns N’ Roses with Brian May opening up for them and that was one of my best experiences. I’ll never forget walking into the venue from behind the stage and seeing Brian’s hair silhouetted against the lights! But most of all his music. Amazing!

This just in from The Hellset Orchestra Headquarters:

Hellset Orchestra vocalist Michael Wetherburn shall be joining the mighty instru-metalists The Legion of Doom in an evening of celebration of the great Freddie Mercury. Freddie would have been 60 this week and to toast this occasion the said performers will be playing a variety of Queen’s greatest compositions.

The peformance takes place on Sat 9th Sept at the Old Angel in Nottingham.

Support shall come from Old Basford and The Legion of Doom who will also perform a set of their own material. It’s £4 to get in and all money goes to Save the Children.

Doors 8pm.

Sounds like a great gig! It’s good to see events taking place in memory of the late great Freddie Mercury and Michael Wetherburn is one of the best frontmen I’ve seen perform here in England along with his band The Hellset Orchestra.

Check out their website and superb tunes by following this link: www.thehellsetorchestra.co.uk
