November, December 2009 UK tour dates

“Watch The Sun Come Up” video + remix on BandWeblogs.com

Following a series of his own live dates, Example has met his match and is about to join the UK’s mouthiest and biggest female superstar Lily Allen as the headline support on her UK tour.

The 17-date UK tour kicks off in Sheffield on 16th November, 2009 and runs through to 17th December at London’s Brixton Academy.

Example burst onto the scene earlier this year with the release of the demonic club track “Hooligans” and went onto to dominate the summer with the smash hit “Watch The Sun Come Up” leading The Guardian to label him ‘a brilliant pop tinged superstar in the making’.

Live, Example’s energy is limitless and his show is a no holds barred performance – his raps are razor sharp and his newfound love of all things pop comes through with killer choruses in tracks like the single “Watch The Sun Come Up” and the Calvin Harris produced “Time Machine”.

Fans will also be treated to a sneak preview of new single “Won’t Go Quietly” and hear some Example classics like “Me & Mandy” and “Dirty Face” as well as the most recently released and totally deviant “Hooligans” which earned Example the tag of ‘dysfunctional electro pop sensation’ by the NME.

Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw, Annie Mac, Judge Jules, Jo Whiley, Chris Moyles, Sara Cox and Pete Tong at Radio 1 all sing his praises, and Pete invited Example out to Ibiza this summer to perform on his live show with other specially invited guests Florence and the Machine and Pendulum. Zane also asked him to do a live PA during his show at Eden.

The Maccabees ace new single, “Can You Give It”, is out this week, and comes backed with a brass band rendition of the song as a b-side on 7-inch.

The version is so good they want everyone to hear it, so it’s just been made available for free:

Download the Maccabees – Can You Give It (Dodworth Colliery M.W. Brass Band Rendition) for free at the Guardian.co.uk

“We had to do some B-sides,” says Orlando Weeks, the band’s lead singer told The Guardian.

“Quite a lot of the record touched on brass, so I thought it would be nice to go the whole hog. We didn’t want to get another lot of remixes. Everyone’s kind of heard enough of the rr-rr-rrrrow.”

If all that weren’t enough, the band were in the Radio 1 Live Lounge this morning, performing “Can You Give It” and a cover of Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow“: The Maccabees on Radio 1

“Opening up for The Cure is no small accomplishment, and after being handpicked by Robert Smith himself last year, 65daysofstatic join the list of artists that include Cranes, Mogwai, The Rapture, and Muse who have all been supporting acts…The songs felt very much alive, glistening and metallic, almost hard-edged and ethereal at times, but not quite so, and with dark, grungy garage echoing around it. Electronica blended and layered perfectly within magnificently intricate guitars and drums, what 65daysofstatic has been pioneering for quite a few years now….Like The Cure, 65daysofstatic, criss-cross so many different genres it’s unfair to just lump them in just one like post/prog rock or something like that. This is a band that loves to perform live, and they clearly show it.” – Buzznet’s “Pressed for Sound” blog

May and June have been busy months for Sheffield’s 65daysofstatic. The Cure have taken this bright and promising group all over North America, bringing their epic instrumental rock to arenas like The Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks, the Sasquatch Music Festival, and they just wrapped up their US tour playing NYC’s Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.

This past winter, while the group was resting between these massive tours, the band went into the studio to record ‘The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East European Dance Parties’ EP to accompany their 2008 tour dates. Comprising two very different takes on the The Destruction of Small Ideas track of the same name, plus two completely new songs, ‘The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East European Dance Parties’ EP answers the question “What happens if we put these instruments down for a couple of seconds and create a 16 strong choir from our own under rehearsed voices?” The result is a brilliantly executed single produced with the sonic exploration of their previous records, while pushing the band towards their dark and dance-club-friendly electronic side.

The EP was released on 65daysofstatic’s longtime label, Monotreme Records and when it landed in the UK it received an early spin on the national BBC Radio 1. DJ Dan Carter of BBC Radio 1 introduced “Dance Parties (Mechanised)” as the “hottest record in the world right now!”

65daysofstatic Downloads:

“Dance Parties (Mechanised)” MP3

“Dance Parties (Distant)” MP3

To further enhance the euphoric auditory and visual experience that comes with this striking EP, 65daysofstatic invite fans to remix “Dance Parties” in real time via an interactive website they developed. By toggling the mouse throughout the screen, the music mix changes beats, vocals, guitars, layered effects, and other facets of the song which can only be explored and discovered with personal interaction.

Remix “Dance Parties” with your mouse

The group has also commissioned Dave Holloway, their long time visual director, to create the static filled images of a mysterious dance club in their “Dance Parties (Distant)” music video.

Watch “Dance Parties (Distant)” video:

The group has run out of roads to travel in the US for now, but after the American release of The Distant and Mechanised Glow of East European Dance Parties EP we are welcomed into their hopeful future.

A one-man assembly of bold and vibrant caricatures in sound; The Voluntary Butler Scheme makes its debut with the EP ‘Trading Things In’ released on The Lowest Layer Of The Trifle Recordings.

22-year-old Rob Jones aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme takes a wry look at life’s shortcomings and styles a plasticine pop of ruggedly organic and excitingly abstract songs.

Opening track “Trading Things In” is lyrically vivid English-summer pop. With ambitiously realised harmonies, and pleasingly shabby arrangement, it recognises the truly defining symptoms of love and devotion; Broccoli, running shoes and bad MP3 playlists.

With “The Eiffel Tower And The BT Tower”, Rob welcomes a swinging, ska inflected Motown group into his Midland home, “The BT Tower is the first thing that catches your eye when you go into Birmingham. Some sort of warped Midlands’ pride made me want to put it in the title.”

The apparent pop soul whimsy of “Hot Air Balloon Heart”, shares the eccentric gifts of Nilsson and more immediately Gruff Rhys, as it spins classic songwriting into new, surreal and otherworldly shapes – “I’ve been dreaming of you so often, makes my hot air balloon heart soften…”

Hailing from Stourbridge, Rob’s inauguration as a solo artist was inspired – albeit indirectly – by fellow mid-lander Pato Banton. Under the misapprehension that collaboration with the lyrical toaster might be on the cards, Rob wrote and recorded an album’s worth of songs. When the partnership inevitably came to naught, Rob set about filling in the gaps with his harmonica and The Voluntary Butler Scheme was born.

Calling forward his own proverb “a bass drum on the back is worth two on the floor”, Rob now tours with a collection of keyboards, guitars, kick drum and percussive accoutrements, recreating his progressive pop opuses as a one man band, most recently alongside Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong and Duke Special.

Having garnered the support of Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, Rob was scheduled for a Huw Stephens session broadcast on 18th June and a Marc Riley session on 16th July, 2008.

Watch “Trading Things In” video:

The video was filmed by James Copeman, the director behind Laura Marling’s “Ghosts” and “My Manic And I”, Mystery Jets “Young Love” and “Flakes”, Noah And The Whale “Shape Of My Heart” and “Five Years Time” and Emmy The Great “Gaberiel”.

July 2008 Live Dates:

July 9th, 2008 London, The Slaughtered Lamb
19th Suffolk, Latitude Festival (Introducing Stage)
26th Ripley, Indietracks Festival

DJ Disciple aka David Banks started out playing underground parties in New York, and since then has become one of the busiest DJs in the world. He’s worked in more clubs in the UK than any American DJ before, and has played clubs around the world.

Not only is DJ Disciple busy being a traveling DJ, his work has appeared in movies, he’s done remixes for several artists and more recently, his latest single, “Work It Out” has been receiving airplay on Radio 1 as well as being played by internationally acclaimed DJs.

“Work It Out” is the debut single set for release in the UK on House Trained Records June 2, 2008. The song features Dawn Tallman and the single includes funky mixes by Mischa Daniels, Klaas, Whelan & Di Scala and more. I’m really digging the Klaas Mix and the Allister Whitehead Full Circle Remix.

Something tells me that those who don’t frequent the clubs on a regular basis are going to start hearing more from DJ Disciple. He’s already been played on UK radio, and now with the “Work It Out” release and video to go with it, this song will be his intro into many more people’s homes – and cars this summer 2008.

For some reason, the DJ life has always been a mystery to me, and an interesting topic of conversation amongst fellow musicians. A few years ago it seemed there were more bands feeling the pressure of DJs squeezing onto their turf…but over time I think the dust may have settled a bit and some musicians are even out there DJing themselves, when they’re not playing music. Personally, I think it would be great to work with a DJ someday – it would be interesting to hear some of my songs remixed by a pro!

Anyone with the opportunity to go to a club where DJ Disciple is playing should. Throw away any inhibitions that you may have and just lose yourself to the music!

Fresh from their sold-out Look Me In The Eyes tour of the USA, teen-sensations the Jonas Brothers have announced they will bring their power pop anthems live to Europe, joining Avril Lavigne in 23 cities across the continent.

Straight from the platinum success of their self-titled album released in August 2007, this exciting addition to the show’s line-up will let European fans experience the band live for the very first time.

Phil Bowdery, EVP of Live Nation Touring in Europe said “This band is going to be the success story of the year. Having seen the reactions of their fans in the States, we are very excited to be working with a band who have such a great future ahead of them.”

“This will be our first opportunity to play live for our fans in Europe and we really can’t wait to visit every city.” said the band.

The Jonas Brothers caused chaos when they visited the Radio 1 studios in London and wrestled Nick Grimshaw (the video with Nick Grimshaw (watch) has racked up thousands of plays and 31 honours on YouTube already).

After the wrestle, the boys grabbed their guitars and played an acoustic version of debut UK single “S.O.S” for around 100 screaming fans waiting outside Radio 1:

Widely tipped as one of the emerging talents of 2008, Manchester, England based singer-songwriter Doug Walker will release his debut single “The Mystery” March 10th, 2008 on Warner Brothers Records. The single will also be available as a digital download.

“The Mystery” has already proved to be Doug Walker’s breakthrough moment. Walker hit upon a plan to head down to Radio 1 early in the morning to hand out copies of his self-released single “The Mystery” to staff arriving for the day. In amongst the runners, cleaners and security staff who would inevitably find a copy of the single thrust into their hands, Walker hoped a few copies would find themselves in the ownership of some more influential figures.

As Chris Moyles arrived to prepare for his breakfast show, another copy of “The Mystery” was gone. Moyles subsequently played “The Mystery” that very morning and received such an overwhelmingly positive public reaction that he played it twice more, eventually giving Doug Walker thirty minutes coverage before a primetime audience.

What followed was the biggest whirlwind of Walker’s life and, just six week later, he had inked a deal with Warner Bros. Records. Two months later, his debut album ‘Fear Together’ (due out on April 7th) was finalised.

Watch Doug Walker – “The Mystery” video:

Recorded in London and New York with producer Danton Supple (Coldplay) and Michael Brauer (Jeff Buckley, KT Tunstall, The Kooks) on mixing duties, ‘Fear Together’ showcases songs that Walker has lived with and others that are newly written. Aside from “The Mystery”, Walker excels with the likes of “Shine”, “Shed A Little Light” and “Obstacles” – immediately captivating gems that he describes simply as being about “love, faith and just making it through.”

You can catch Doug Walker’s live show when he undertakes a residency at London’s Water Rats. He’s playing at the venue tonight, February 12th, 2008. He plays Manchester’s Night & Day on February 15th before heading to Texas to play SXSW! More dates below.

Duffy is possibly the most exciting prospect for the next year. Her ascent from the Llyn Peninsula to 2008’s pole position continues on February 25th, 2008 when the 23-year old artist releases her rapturous new single “Mercy”. A statuesque soul gem propelled by rich, torch song vocals, it’s the second track to be taken from the eagerly anticipated debut LP ‘Rockferry’, March 3rd, and seals a dynamic arrival.

A masterclass in mature, resonant pop, “Mercy’s” hook-laden bassline hails straight from the Motown canon. Written by Duffy with Steve Booker, who produced the track, it’s a highlight of her recent standout performances on BBC2’s Later with Jools Holland & Radio 2’s Music Club.

Watch Duffy performing “Mercy” on Later with Jools Holland video:

“Mercy” follows the critically acclaimed, Bernard Butler-produced debut single “Rockferry”, which was made Record Of The Week by both Jo Whiley & Edith Bowman at Radio 1.

Following live shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall (as special guest to The Magic Numbers) and Union Chapel, Duffy begins the New Year with a 4-week residency at London’s Pigalle Club – Jan 16th, 23rd, 30th & Feb 6th – before nationwide dates through February and March.

Previewing tracks from her forthcoming ‘Rockferry’ LP, Duffy’s live shows will also feature her impressive band – Toby Oyerinde (guitar), Tom Meadows (drums), Ben Epstein (Bass), Ayo Oyerinde (Keyboards), Jon Green (Guitar) and Josh McKenzie (Percissuion) – tickets available now.
