Ladyhawke, whose real name is Phillipa Brown, is famous for her single “Paris is Burning”, taken from her self-titled debut album released at the end of last year. Elbow, Editors and Hard-Fi have all opened Sessions before and Ladyhawke is set to make big waves this year. Alongside The Kooks, this will be a stunning evening of live music.”

The DVD will be available on general release from all good retailers from 14 April, 2008.

All profits from the sale of the DVD will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, helping them to continue to build specialist teenage cancer units within the NHS for young people with cancer.

Tickets to the April 2008 gigs at the Royal Albert Hall are now on sale and are proving to be as in-demand as ever with Muse, Paul Weller and Duffy selling out within hours.

However, there is limited availability for The Fratellis and an evening of comedy with Noel Fielding and more exciting acts.

The TCT gigs were the brainchild of The Who’s Roger Daltrey CBE, patron of Teenage Cancer Trust, who has, over the last eight years, persuaded the best of British talent available across rock, pop and comedy to give up their time to raise money for this unique charity.

Each day in the UK, 6 teenagers will be diagnosed with cancer – that is over 2,000 diagnoses per year. TCT funds specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals, providing an environment where teenagers can get on with being teenagers, a positive environment expected to improve survival rates and ensure a better future for patients and their families.

With the first two albums selling over 350k copies between them, UMTV have put together another brilliant album of the best songs of the year – ‘Essential Songs 2008′, set for release in the UK on 3rd December 2007.

Now that the end of the year is in sight, it’s time to sit back and reminisce about the good times of 2007 and get ready to see in the New Year. What better way to do this than by listening to the biggest essential songs of the year?

The track list reads like a who’s who of pop royalty. From the shiny new, to the classic greats. Starting with the come back kings Take That and their massive new hit “Rule The World” (from the hit movie Stardust), moving onto the collaboration between modern day diva Amy Winehouse and superstar producer Mark Ronson with the track “Valerie”. With new blood from the Coronation Street heartthrob Richard Fleeshman, and classics from legends Oasis, The Cranberries and Paul Weller, CD 1 really does have something for everyone.

The second CD opens with the exclusive of pop prince Mika’s new track “Happy Ending” and carries on with an eclectic mix of songs from artists old and new, with girl power being added by Feist and her catchy “1234″ and Mutya Buena with “Real Girl”.

If that isn’t enough to entice you, ‘Essential Songs – 2008′ also includes tracks from some of the finest artists in the world including The Killers, Nelly Furtado, Embrace and Pop royalty Elton John.

With mixed feelings about the event, I spent most of Saturday July 7th watching Live Earth on the BBC. I was looking forward to seeing some of the acts that were playing locations around the world in Hamburg, Germany, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tokyo, Japan, Shanghai, China, Antarctica, Johannesburg, South Africa, Sydney, Australia, Washington D.C., New Jersey, USA and Wembley Stadium in London, UK – where the Foo Fighters played.

The Foo Fighters founder and frontman Dave Grohl is looking good and his passion and stage presence during their set at Live Earth was infectious. Passion wouldn’t be a word that I would use for some of the other acts that took to the stage before the Foo Fighters.

Technical difficulties were an issue. Bands were having problems with their sound on stage all day. Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell couldn’t hear anything through the monitors and when the Red Hot Chili Peppers played I thought we might get through a set without the sound drama. They sounded great and Flea was on fire, but after playing a couple songs, the Chili Peppers stopped to have what appeared to be a ‘band meeting’ on stage – at Live Earth in front of millions of people. At one point I could hear Anthony Kiedis say something about not being able to hear. I think after that they only had one more song to go.

Now I, as a singer, can understand sound problems on stage. I love to have a good mix in the monitors with some reverb coming back at me. But you know what? If I was playing only three songs with my band at Wembley Stadium – in front of millions (some say 2 billion) of people I think even I could handle not being able to hear and just play on like everything is okay. Especially since most acts only played two or three songs. As a viewer, I don’t want the distraction of stage problems and complaining while trying to enjoy a band and their music, well then again…these things do tend to make good ‘car crash TV’.

I’m sure the bands didn’t want to upstage their set by complaining about the sound and even though bands should know better, the first thing the stage manager or event director should have told them before they went out on stage, was “don’t mention the sound”.

The reason I’m even bringing this up is because knowing that there were sound problems all day at the new Wembley Stadium, it was brilliant to see Dave Grohl just get on with things, with the passion and the attitude that all rock fans love to see – and he played like his life depended on it. The band sounded great, they were having fun and if Dave Grohl had any problems hearing there were no signs or nasty expressions coming from him. Drummer Taylor Hawkins also put on an incredible performance. Excellent set by the Foo Fighters.

Duran Duran is set to play Live Earth London taking place July 7th, 2007. The London event will be held at Wembley Stadium. Other acts scheduled to perform at Live Earth London include Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, Corinne Bailey Rae, Damien Rice, David Gray, Foo Fighters, Genesis, James Blunt, John Legend, Keane, Madonna, Paolo Nutini, Razorlight, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snow Patrol.

I wonder what Duran Duran’s set list will look like. Maybe some oldies but goodies from the “Save A Prayer” and “Rio” era? And is Andy Taylor really out of the band? Actually, to answer my last question, all I had to do was look at the Duran Duran Live Earth promo photo to see that he’s not there. Everyone else is though: Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes (who recently designed the first ever video guitar – “Pixelator” for Fender), John Taylor and Roger Taylor.

Duran Duran’s other big gig this summer will be performing at the Concert for Diana in London at Wembley on July 1st.

Live Earth concert venues and locations will also be staged in Shanghai, China, Antarctica, Johannesburg, South Africa, Sydney, Australia, Giants Stadium, USA, Tokyo, Japan, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Hamburg, Germany and Washington, D.C..

If you didn’t know already, Al Gore is the co-chair for Live Earth and is also involved in organizing the events. There has been some controversy and skepticism about Al Gore and his green ambitions in the media and around the internet. It’s probably not too difficult to find mixed opinions by simply doing a search in Google.

I’ve also noted in a previous entry the irony of Al Gore and his current relationship with bands and music and that of his wife Tipper Gore and their involvement with the censorship of music via Tipper Gore’s PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) vehicle in the 80’s.

I would be curious to know if Madonna remembers that her song, “Dress You Up” was on the PMRC’s “Filthy Fifteen” list. The Filthy Fifteen was a list of fifteen songs that the PMRC found most objectionable. Maybe Madonna sees Live Earth as more important than what went on with the PMRC.

Time must have healed some old wounds or maybe the bands and musicians have simply forgotten or don’t care about the PMRC and the Gores’ affiliation with it. Or it’s possible that the bands feel that spreading the word about climate change and global warming is more important and are willing to brush aside any hard feelings.

I think that it is important to raise awareness of climate change and to listen to the scientists who have been studying global warming. There are also many green and environmental blogs out there in the blogosphere currently discussing green issues like TreeHugger, Hugg.com and the celebrity green gossip blog Ecorazzi.

Razorlight has hit number 1 in the UK album charts with their album titled, ‘Razorlight’. Very very cool. Their single ‘America’ has been released on UK radio and it’s good to hear a ballad by a band for a change. I can’t get that song out of my head either (as is the same story with their song ‘In The Morning’)…I think they’ve discovered the secret to writing quality pop music. Hopefully it will last for at least a couple more albums worth.

So it’s not just me getting their songs stuck in my head, why don’t YOU watch and listen to their single ‘In The Morning’:
“In the morning, you know he won’t remember a thing…in the morning you know it’s gonna be alright”.I can’t get the song out of my head. You know what I do when this happens? If I’m no where near a radio I try to hear (in my head) two different songs at once and then usually the song ‘goes away’. Sound crazy? Maybe but it works. Try it sometime. You’ll see.

Anyway, Razorlight has done it again with their song ‘In the Morning’ and that song rocks! Razorlight is one of my favorite bands – two summers in a row of hot tunes which is pretty good now a days considering the conveyor belt of bands that get thrown at us from the mainstream. Everynow and then though, they don’t disappoint and this is clearly one example.

How can you watch the singer of Razorlight, Johnny Borell and not think of Bob Geldof? If you’re a fan of The Boomtown Rats and you’re not familiar with Razorlight I think now would be a good time to check them out. Great tunes for the summer, hanging out with friends, spending time out in the sun. Crank it up!

Try to catch them on tour if you can. Here are some upcoming shows around the UK and Europe:
