Enter Music Publishing, publishers of worldwide, hip percussion magazines including DRUM! and TRAPS Magazines, today announced the launch of DRUM! Digital (drumdigital.com). DRUM! Digital is a free, online multimedia version of the magazine that is available to drummers internationally in an on-screen, flip-page format.

“It’s a new day for our company, DRUM! itself, and the drumming community,” says editor in chief, Andy Doerschuk. “Over the lifespan of DRUM!, we’ve always tried to be open to change in terms of content, design, and now distribution. DRUM! Digital carries on our editorial philosophy and will make it possible for us to extend our worldwide readership.”

The first issue of DRUM! Digital features stories from the magazine’s special Urban Music October issue, featuring The Roots’ Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson on the cover. It includes all of the features from that special issue. In addition, there are multimedia extras that make this version of the magazine more useful to an online audience.

As with all of Enter Music Publishing’s print magazines, DRUM! Digital is diverse and loaded with innovative, content-rich material. “There are ten embedded videos in the issue,” says publisher Phil Hood. “And most of the ads are linked, so an online user can visit the advertiser’s web sites, view instructional videos and interviews, or zoom in and read the stories.”

DRUM! Digital is produced using technology developed by iDigital Editions, a Temecula, California-based software company. iDigital’s technology made it possible to publish DRUM! Digital to look just like the print version with the editorial advantage of being viewed by anyone, anywhere, anytime over the Internet. “We looked at many software solutions but felt that iDigital provided a better reading experience than competing solutions, as well as superior marketing and advertising opportunities for our clients,” says Hood.

The iDigital Edition digital magazine does not require users to download and install additional client reader software. They can access it through their current Internet browser and the standard flash plug-in already present in nearly every Internet-enabled computer today!

DRUM! Digital versions of the magazine will be available approximately 45 days after subscribers receive their print copies. Plans call for print subscribers to get early notification as to when an issue is available and, eventually, exclusive access to certain DRUM! Digital features.

“I don’t see the digital magazine as a replacement for print or for the web site,” says Hood. “In many ways, it’s completely separate, offering the great writing of print along with some of the interactivity of the web. As we post more issues, readers will have an easier time finding archived features. Also, advertisers will have a chance for their ads to keep pulling response, long after the print edition has been removed from newsstand shelves.”

With the launch of DRUM! Digital, Enter Music Publishing is well positioned to capitalize on the growing drum industry. According to figures from the American Music Conference and Music Trades magazine, the drum industry has annual global sales of approximately $1.25 billion, and the United States accounts for up to 45 percent of that total.

About Enter Music Publishing

I’ve been excited about all of the press releases, reviews and Guest Music Blogger entries that have been coming our way, here at Band Weblogs. It’s great to be able to keep up with music news in one place and the best thing – it’s free. I would like to thank everyone who has been contributing their blog entries, and helping Band Weblogs to grow into the resourceful and informative music blog that it is today.

Musicians, bands, artists, music publicists, record companies, music fans and more have been submitting blog entries to Band Weblogs for free, for online distribution. All Guest Music Blogger entries are reviewed before publication and whether the entries are formal press releases about bands and their music or laid back music blog entries written by musicians, most submissions get published.

In today’s music climate, it’s important for bands to find unique ways to get their music heard. I’ve been a firm believer in musicians taking matters into their own hands when it comes to online promotion. Of course, the more help a band can get, the better, and adding music blog entries to Band Weblogs is just one more way to help spread the word about up and coming bands, new releases, reviews, music videos, music blogs and more.

Not only are the entries published on Band Weblogs, but some blog entries submitted by Guest Music Bloggers have been featured on quality news websites like Reuters, USA Today and Austin American Statesman. The more people that read the music blog entries equals more free promotion for bands!

Dave Tommo and I host the Band Weblogs Podcast Show which features ‘podsafe’ music by up and coming unsigned bands and signed bands. We love doing the show and it’s important to us that we play music by bands and artists that we really like. Band Weblogs Podcast Shows are aired on CBS owned KYOU Radio and 1550AM in San Francisco as well as distributed to podcast directories around the net. Podcasts are another way for musicians to get their music ‘out there’.

To keep up to date on the latest entries, you can subscribe to our RSS Feeds and add them to your favorite RSS news reader. You can also receive blog entries to your inbox.

The Philadelphia based Junior Music Executive Program will sponsor the upcoming fifth annual Independent Music Conference, taking place this year in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend.

IMC Founder and Chair, Noel Ramos says, “I’m ecstatic to have this wonderful group participate in our community and vision.”

Jr Music Executive, founded by industry entrepreneurs Aisha Winfield and Shani Gonzales, is an entertainment industry based initiative created to encourage high school and college students to go to school, graduate, and be successful by exposing them to careers in the music business. The company endeavors to provide young people with information, education, industry networking and internship opportunities essential to minimizing the barriers-to-entry and attaining a successful entrance into the business of entertainment. For more information about Jr Music Executive, please visit www.jrmusicexec.com.

When asked about the sponsorship, Aisha Winfield noted, “This conference provides one of a kind opportunities for our students to get involved, network, and learn. The quality of the information provided at the conference and the passion of the IMC organizers was a perfect match for Jr Music Executive. Students often want to know how to make money in the music business, the IMC is offering 3 full days of answers.”

InterMixx.com is the parent company that presents the Independent Music Conference (IMC’07), the online independent music store IndieGate.com and is the publisher of InterMixx independent music magazine, one of the first independent music magazines since 1988. The IMC evolved from a desire to build a trustworthy network for artists within the indie community along with raising awareness, support and value for independent music. The first IMC took place in 2003 and IMC ‘07 will be the sixth conference that InterMixx has presented. Other IMC events are also planned for Dallas, Los Angeles and Charleston, WV.

IMC President and founder, Noel Ramos has helped to create and establish credibility for the indie community in his nearly twenty year publishing career. In addition to printing InterMixx, one of the oldest national magazines devoted to indie music, in the early 90’s Ramos developed the IndieList, the first independent music discussion group online, long before MySpace became a household name.

We are extremely excited about a new upcoming project featuring Holly Woods, formerly of the 80’s rock band, Toronto. Toronto released 5 Gold and Platinum albums in the late 70’s/early 80’s that sold 660,000 units in Canada and resulted in seven Top 40 hits in Canada and the US.

In 1985, Toronto’s label, Solid Gold Records, went into receivership which forced the band into splitting up. Two of the members, Holly Woods and Scott Kreyer, regrouped and continued on to a studio in Atlanta to record new tracks however, before the sessions were complete their producer, Sonny Limbo, also died suddenly. The album was shopped around but labels shied away fearing repercussions from Solid Gold. It would have appeared that fate was against them and the material would never see the light of day. The tapes were shelved for over twenty years in a climate controlled warehouse.

Just recently, Cyclone Records acquired the rights to the “lost” master and is now releasing it as an 8 song album entitled “Holly Woods-Live It Up!” in Spring 2007.

I could talk all night about music, blogs, bands and musicians. Rather than chew your ear out, instead, to save time I thought I would add a condensed version of my thoughts about music blogs. I’ve written before about band blogs and promotion, but now feel that this is a good time to bring up music blogs and how beneficial they are to bands and artists.

A quick sum up of what a music blog is: a blog about bands and music.

Comments are welcome if you have additional ideas and thoughts.

Okay, let’s get started:

1. Promotion
Music blogs are amazing promotional tools for bands. They are their own mini buzz machines. If the blogger likes the band they’re writing about great, if not they’ll still probably link to the band for readers to check out for themselves and at that point, readers and potential fans can make their own minds up.

2. Links
As the population on the internet continues to grow, it becomes more difficult for new up and coming bands and artists and their music to be ‘found’ by potential fans. When a music blogger adds links to bands either in a blog entry or on their sidebar, this helps expose the band more to the public eye.

3. Music
Music bloggers writing about music on a daily basis will most likely be linking to the band website and/or adding mp3s for readers to hear first hand what the blogger is writing about. If they are adding mp3s to their blogs, hopefully they’re getting permission from bands to do so.

4. Videos
For bands with videos, websites like Myspace and YouTube have made it easy for bloggers to embed video codes onto blogs. Videos are excellent on music blogs as the reader not only gets to read about the band, but can also hear the band and watch their video.

5. Fans
If a particular band is being written about favorably by influential, popular and/or trusted bloggers then there is a great chance that new fans will be made from readers of music blogs. As mentioned before, even if what the blogger is writing isn’t favorable, then there is the chance the reader simply won’t agree.
6. Community
There are quite a few music bloggers out there who dedicate blogs to specific bands and music styles ranging from jazz, blues, rnb, country, folk, punk, rock and more as well as blogs with various music topics. This can create a community of dedicated readers, subscribers and commenters who visit the blogs frequently.

7. Sales
Numbers 1-6 above could all lead to sales of music for bands and artists. Whether music blogs have direct links to artist downloads and online CD stores or if a reader decides to go out to a music shop to buy a CD after learning about a new band or album/single release after reading about it on a blog, then the music blog was indeed influential to the sale!

8. Live Show Dates
Fans are always interested to know when their favorite band will be playing live in their hometown. Music blogs help to keep the reader informed and reminded of tour dates, shows, gigs and live music events.

9. Opinion
Music blogs are great places to go for readers to find out what other people are thinking of a certain band, musician, singer. A blog search in Google or Technorati for “music blogs” can result in hundreds of current conversations taking place.

10. Easy Access
It’s so easy to find music blogs by doing a search on Google or to go to blog directories and browse their music categories. Music blogs also tend to link to and recommend other blogs on their sidebars.

Bonus:

11. Free
For now, most music blogs are free (hopefully it stays that way). The information about bands, opinions, music, videos and podcasts are free for music lovers to devour!

Bands who want to request a review from a music blogger can usually get in touch by contacting them via an email address provided on the blog or a contact page.

BandWeblogs.com adds a twist to all that is written above. Bands and artists can come here to promote themselves, in their own words as Guest Music Bloggers. PR companies, record companies and management companies can also send in formal press releases and reviews of bands for publication on Band Weblogs. I also like to write about bands and music here, from a singer/musician point of view.

Sign up as a Guest Music Blogger to add entries and promote music at Band Weblogs!

The 10th Annual Wilmington Exchange Festival (WE Fest), taking place from May 24-May 28th, in and around Wilmington, NC proper, is now accepting submissions from band and artists interested in participating.

To be considered, please visit www.myspace.com/wefestallstars. Send a message with the words “2007 submission” in the title.

WE Fest is a multi-day, totally DIY, volunteer-run extravaganza that always takes place during the week of Memorial Day Weekend. The first WE Fest was co-founded by Wilmington resident and underground punk Kenyata Sullivan in 1996 in an effort to expose underground talent and build community within the independent scene. Only indie-label and unsigned bands are allowed to play. W.E. Fest has garnered a reputation for discovering new talent, finding a larger percentage of winners than any other event in the country, including South by Southwest, CMJ New Music Festival, the annual NEMO festival in Boston, and PMC. Since then, indie bands of all shapes, sizes, colors, and sounds have played this Fest, made friends, and gone home to network, share gigs, keep in touch, and make WE Fest part of their lives.

This year the festival will make a return to its roots by also featuring films, zines, comics and other DIY arts projects.

Past participants include The Dismemberment Plan, Dufus, The Mooney Suzuki, Discount (Alison Mosshart before The Kills), The Selzers (Ryan Gentles before The Strokes), ASG, The Damn Personals (Anthony Rossomando before Dirty Pretty Things), The Waking Hours, Mayflies USA, and many others, all when they were still unsigned.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK has announced that their Columbia Records and RCA Records labels will no longer be accepting physical demos sent in by bands and artists. Instead, they’ve decided to go the blog route and are now officially asking bands to create blogs to promote themselves by using the Vox blogging platform to write blog entries, upload their music and network with fans. Bands will then have a chance of getting discovered online by either Sony BMG, Columbia Records or RCA Records’ A&R reps.

It’s very interesting to see that Sony BMG has jumped on to the Music Blog Wagon. Here at BandWeblogs.com we’ve known how important band blogs are and have been promoting bands and musicians’ blogs since January 2005!

But I’m not here to toot my own horn. As far as I’m concerned, Sony BMG – you’re preachin’ to the choir. Band Weblogs started out as a Band Blog and Music Blog directory and now Guest Music Bloggers have been contributing their band press, music reviews, band stories and music links for greater exposure.

The more free places on the internet that bands and musicians can go to get exposure the better and as I’ve mentioned recently, band blogs are great marketing tools. The bands that do create a blog at Vox hoping to get discovered by a Sony A&R rep should realize that there will be many more benefits to writing in the blog than just for those particular record labels. The band blogs at Vox are available to anyone who might want to read them which means that they’re also great marketing tools for other possibilities and discoveries.

I’ve created a blog and profile for my band The Babylon Cowboys at Vox which you can find here: http://thebabyloncowboys.vox.com/. I’ll be updating the blog with our music and various random thoughts. You never know!

The A&R reps, who also have their own Vox blogs, will be looking for bands that have great music, positive comments, good ratings, lots of friends – basically a lot of buzz and I’m sure that Sony BMG, Columbia Records or RCA Records will be announcing their first Vox blog signing soon.

Chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, UK & Ireland, Ged Doherty even has a blog at Vox. He’s written some interesting blog entries there if you want to read what Ged has to say about the new Sony BMG blog initiative, his experiences with bands and his various thoughts.

Ged Doherty Sony BMG Blog

Bands can sign up for a Vox blog here:

Columbia Demos
RCA Demos

For more information about Sony go to Sony BMG Music UK

Once you have created your Vox blog and have some songs and entries up, why not come back here to Band Weblogs and tell us all about it!

MusicDish to combine artist development and marketing campaign in support of Karlex album “Ghetto Fabulous”

MusicDish, LLC, a music magazine publisher and artist marketing/ development firm, announced the addition of Haitian American singer/ songwriter Karlex to its MusicDish Network roster. Karlex, who is currently based in the south of France, soulfully fuses the vibes of his native island with funky guitar sounds and heavy bass, in a unique blend called Afro Groove. MusicDish founder Eric de Fontenay and Karlex, who had first met in September 2006, struck the deal in the Press Club of the Palais des Festivals on the closing day of MIDEM 2007 in Cannes, France.

MusicDish will provide full online management support, including brand development and marketing, as well as seeking licensing and business opportunities for his album “Ghetto Fabulous”. Released in France in September 2006, “Ghetto Fabulous” will be released in Benelux in February 2007, followed by a six city tour in the Netherlands in April. He is also currently seeking distribution in the North American market.

The album has been making waves from the start, having been selected by “Arte TV” as an October Event and by “Radio Africa No 1″ as Album Of The Week leading up to the release. Karlex was invited by Phillipe Lefait on France 2’s ‘Live Acoustic’ to play his song “I’ve Got News For You…”, while the album’s first music video “Farewell Angel” has been receiving regular play on the “Europe 2″ cable channel.

In his teens, Karlex moved New York City from Haiti, where he played with different bands with influences as diverse as Rock, Pop and World. In the 90’s, he returned to Haiti where the ambient mysticism, the people’s sufferings, the history (past & present) brought a radical change in his sounds and inspiration. Karlex reminisced, “I was reborn. The calling of the drums in the night filled me with a longing to get back to the true essence of liberty and freedom that my ancestors fought for. And nothing translated that better for me than a certain sound reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s fused with actual urban music and Haitian soul.”

For more information on Karlex, visit http://www.myspace.com/karlex or http://www.sonicbids.com/karlex

Karlex joins an eclectic roster of artists and companies on the MusicDish Network’s marketing/artist development program, including electro-groove artist Polarity/1; Your Guitarist, the Internet-based developer of custom guitar tracks; folk-country singer/songwriter Amy Speace; MusicWorld3D, the virtual environment for live entertainment; and RockPoP Gallery, showcasing the masters of music artwork.

About MusicDish, LLC
MusicDish, LLC (http://www.musicdish.com) has been at the forefront of the digital music sector, publishing some of the industry’s leading music magazine, including MusicDish.com and Mi2N.com. Through the MusicDish Network (http://www.musicdish.net), it supports the development of artists and labels through saturated marketing and online brand development, whether online street teams or p2p viral distribution.

There are many familiar and not so familiar bands and artists with singles ready for their February 2007 release here in the UK. It’s interesting to see Boy George on the list – singing with Amanda Ghost on their new single “Time Machine” set for release on February 5th. I had seen them perform on the Jonathan Ross show a few weeks ago and it was a very good song and performance.

As a Hendrix fan I’ll have to look into this Acoustic Ladyland band with their upcoming release “Cuts and Lies” out on February 12th (March 5th?). Of course Jimi Hendrix released his album Electric Ladyland back in 1968 and it seems Acoustic Ladyland may be fans as well.

After his short stint in the UK Celebrity Big Brother house, Donny Tourette and his Towers of London are set to release their single, “I’m a Rat” also out on the 12th. They’re a fun band – a good healthy punk and rock mix of Sex Pistols, New York Dolls and Motley Crue.

There’s always a lot to take in with upcoming releases and I’m looking forward to hearing more new bands and their singles. From UKMix.org following are the upcoming UK singles releases for February 2007:

PianoTricks.com is the collaboration of Jon Broderick, webmaster, and Christopher Schlegel, piano instructor. Jon and Christopher work in a successful partnership on the popular guitar instruction site guitartricks.com. They decided to expand their reach into cyberspace in 2006 by offering an innovative online piano lesson resource with modern video lessons. Because of the popularity of their sister site the team realized that the techniques they have learned teaching guitar online could translate to people motivated to learn piano online as well, while allowing the students to do it easily in the convenience and comfort of their own homes.

The instructor Christopher Schlegel has many credentials and he is an experienced musical performer and teacher. He has been playing music for 30 years, piano for 12 years, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Bethel College in Tennessee. Christopher loves music of many different styles and knows how to apply the basic fundamental unifying principles of music to any genre. He also composes and performs his own original music in addition to teaching classes and seminars involving music technology (MIDI sequencing, digital recording, scoring). Christopher has 20 years of private instruction experience teaching guitar, piano, and music theory to students of all ages and all styles and a very thorough and enthusiastic teaching style, which is visible in his lessons.

People today have hectic schedules to maintain and as the ability to relax and unwind becomes increasingly difficult, the internet offers an outlet for individuals to pursue activities they would not normally because of the constraints on time, travel, and expense. PianoTricks.com offers an outlet for your busy life and leaves no excuse in your way to take the music lessons you always wanted to.

Visit the PianoTricks.com site to get an example of how lessons are delivered right to your desktop in the easiest possible format. Online piano lessons can fit any schedule 24/7.

With over 20 years in the music industry, Noteborn Music Company is an international publishing company that hand picks quality artists and music for use in movies, TV shows, advertising campaigns, and for music producers. This groundbreaking company values independent and signed artists of all styles and genres. If selected your recordings are entered into a music catalog for submissions to television shows, advertising campaigns, movies and more. The company is now accepting submissions for all genres.

Recently Noteborn Music Company expanded its offerings to artists. The opportunity for every artist to enjoy increased and effortless exposure through his or her very own webpage is now available on the site. The Noteborn Music Store will allow artists to enter information about their style of music, upcoming events and most importantly, begin their own online music store. All you need to do is complete the online registration and send your CDs to sell and you are ready to go. You can also select an easy-to-remember web address that you can use to promote and sell your CDs.

In addition to selling your CDs, your site can include your biography, calendar of events, and pictures to help promote you and your music. The ability to update your own content by logging into the artist-login area of the site is especially attractive to those that want complete artistic freedom and control of their work. This particular section of the site contains easy-to-use tools for managing your content, uploading pictures, adding CDs, and sample songs.

The online music affiliate of Noteborn Music Company is Subway Records. Subway Records will process all customer orders, securely process customer credit cards (SSL), and fulfill and ship all orders, notify you of all orders, and keep you updated on your CD inventory levels. The best part of this entire process is that there are no contracts, unreasonable obligations, or setup fees.

Noteborn Music Company has been very busy creating opportunities for new and independent artists. Noteborn has increased the odds in one the most competitive markets in modern day business. If you are a recording artist, you need every inch of advantage you can find so this is definitely worth looking into.

Artist development in the music industry has evolved over time, leaving most of the early progress to the artist themselves. For the most part, the days are gone when a record label developed up and coming talent. The question continuously arises for those young artists, “where do I start”? With the advent of the Internet, the possibilities are mind boggling.

Many artists put in their mission statement, simply that they want a record deal, thinking that is all they need to succeed for career in music. Most don’t have a clue what it takes to get that deal, let alone maintain that career. Artist development is a huge area overlooked by far too many artists and bands. Let’s explore the question, “What is artist development”?

A record label A&R rep once “discovered” fresh new faces in clubs, bars or word of mouth and would then support them, cultivate their creativeness, build up their fan base, and guide their direction with the intent of turning them into superstars. All of this of course, was with the intent of selling those 45’s, LPs, cassette’s and CDs. Gradually, many labels moved more into product development, which meant they are focused more on the immediacy of sales of the latest CD (product) released, and not bringing the artist up to that point. And more often than not, naive artists were at the labels mercy.

In this Internet age, it is more the artist or band themselves that must build the quality sound that is ready as a commercially viable product. On top of that, they need to have an already established fan base, basic music business skills, perhaps even the early music sales of a well produced CD. Labels are looking for pre-packaged, very talented musicians that are already showing their value. A music career is a charted path to follow. Artist development involves all the issues surrounding and arising from that charted path, and crosses into knowledge of product development – the ultimate sale of the music. Checklist on what artist and product development necessitate:

Exceptional vocals, musicianship and/or songwriting skills

Continued education and enhancement of musical skills

Quality equipment

Performance ability

Image creation and maintenance

Plan of action, goal setting

Exceptional promotion materials, including photographs, press releases and artwork

Business management skills

Marketing, publicity, and promotion knowledge, online and offline

Professional management

Basic knowledge of recording, producing, engineering, and mastering

Basic knowledge of manufacturing, distribution, and sales online, brick and mortar and air-play

Good choices in members, staff and advisors

Physical and mental preparedness

Basic knowledge of finances, accounting

Law and legal issues: publishing, copyrighting, trademarks, and an attorney

Alternative career options – even athletes need to have other options!

Tending to all areas of your music career may make the difference between a one hit wonder and longevity in this business. It’s been said, “If you think this is a piece of cake, you better go bake one.” The music business, again, is a business. Businesses need to make money. That’s worth repeating – the music business is a BUSINESS. Take the time to find out all you can about each of these steps in your journey. That being said, an up and coming artist must begin somewhere…and if a career in the music business is the goal, then any naiveté must be addressed immediately! Knowledge is power. Power gives you leverage. And who knows…that entrepreneurial artist may just find they don’t need that particular record deal after all.
