Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump and Daryl Hall get their groove on Live from Daryl’s House

The two pair up for 25th installment of groundbreaking web series

Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump writes most of the music for his platinum-plus Chicago rock band, but he’s also a closet R&B/soul fan who has produced tracks for fellow Windy City rapper Lupe Fiasco, and is a longtime fan of Daryl Hall’s music, which makes him the perfect guest for the 25th and latest installment of Live From Daryl’s House.

“As a musician, I can’t fathom a show more fun to play than Live From Daryl’s House,” says Stump about his experience playing with Daryl and his band, including T-Bone Wolk, on the web series.

“Patrick Stump is one soulful vocalist,” says Daryl admiringly. “I was really impressed with his grasp of R&B and it turned out we shared a love for a great deal of the same music.”

Watch video promo – Episode 25:

As a producer, Stump has worked with such bands as Gym Class Heroes, whose vocalist Travis McCoy is also an unabashed Daryl Hall fan and a participant in a previous Live From Daryl’s House.

Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman calls him “a musical genius, a mad scientist,” while noted producer/performer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds says, “Patrick is one of the hottest dudes I’ve seen in a long time… He’s got a great voice and a tremendous amount of talent.” Fall Out Boy’s fifth album, Folie a Deux, was released last December, producing the hit singles, “I Don’t Care” and “America’s Suitehearts.”

Stump puts that great voice straight to work, joining Daryl in a seven-song set highlighted by singles “Out of Touch” and “Guessing Games,” the latter from the H2O album. Among the Fall Out Boy songs Daryl and Patrick perform are versions of “I Don’t Care,” “What a Catch, Donny” and “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” along with a cover of Jimmy Ruffin’s soul classic, “What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted.”

Past episodes of Live from Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers like Smokey Robinson, The Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, Finger Eleven’s James Black and Rick Jackett and the Bacon Brothers, along with newcomers such as Philly soul singer Mutlu, Canadian techno-rockers Chromeo, MySpace pop-rock phenom Eric Hutchinson, Cash Money rocker Kevin Rudolf, Wind-up Records’ Chicago rockers Company of Thieves, Bay Area singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson, Charlottesville, VA’s rising Parachute, Chicago rock band Plain White T’s and highly touted tunesmith Diane Birch.

Live from Daryl’s House started with Daryl’s “light-bulb moment” idea of “playing music with my friends and putting it up on the Internet,” and the show has subsequently been praised by such varied media outlets as Rolling Stone, Spin, Daily Variety, CNN, BBC, Yahoo and the influential Lefsetz Letter.

Daryl Hall and John Oates are the number one pop duo of all time. Outselling Simon and Garfunkel, Loggins and Messina and more. With their recent resurgence in pop culture and their growing list of artists who site them as influences it only makes sense that this year was the perfect time to release their first box set.

Do What You Want, Be What You Are: the Music of Daryl Hall & John Oates hit stores in October. In celebration of this box set the duo continue to perform and interact with their fans like never before.

Live From Daryl’s House: On the 15th of every month Daryl Hall premieres a 7 episode web show featuring a collaboration with some of his friends on cover songs and classic Hall and Oates tracks.

The November 2009 episode features Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy and was premiered on LiveFromDarylsHouse.com

MySpace Music has announced an exclusive contest with international pop superstar Lady Gaga to win the chance to film the first U.S concert of her tour on December 1st in Boston, MA; the video will be edited and featured on the homepage of MySpace.

The Fame Monster herself will be choosing fan-submitted videos claiming why they deserve to “get close” to the superstar.

Juan MacLean will DJ a benefit show in memory and in tribute to friend, band mate and legendary drummer Jerry Fuchs, who passed away in an unfortunate accident in the early hours of November 8.

The show will take place November 20, 2009 at San Francisco’s Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street). The show will also feature a DJ set with Parallels. A donation will be made to the Fuchs Family.

Jerry was a celebrated drummer, having recorded and toured with The Juan MacLean, Holy Ghost!, Maserati, !!! and Turing Machine.

Born December 30, 1974 in Marietta, Georgia, he attended the University of Georgia and moved to New York in 1995, quickly becoming a beloved fixture on the city’s music scene. When not touring, Jerry worked as a graphic designer for publications like Chunklet and Entertainment Weekly. Juan MacLean describes Jerry as “the absolute best at what he did” and a “supportive and loyal friend.”

The Juan MacLean has released a video of the extended version of “Happy House,” featuring some of Jerry’s best work. Shot at the Double Door in Chicago on June 16 of this year, the song is a crowd and critic favorite, having been named one of Pitchfork’s 100 Best Tracks of 2008. At nearly 20 minutes long, the performance is a testament to Jerry’s talent and dedication to his craft.

TJM and DFA also just released “Happy House 2 x 12″ with remixes by a wide range of dance music’s all-stars: Chateau Flight, Paul Woolford, Will Saul & Mike Monday, and VHS Or Beta. Lazaro Casanova, an up-and-coming artist and DJ from Miami, who turned in the highest-rated remix of the last Juan Maclean single, has been invited back once again.

Sam Sparro’s protégés the Love Grenades are on a mission to conquer the world with their highly danceable-rock beats. Their most recent conquest is New York who fell in love with singer/auteur Elizabeth Wight.

Their performance will be on November 14, 2009 at Bardot, 10:00 PM.

Playful, sexy, and eminently danceable, Love Grenades are a new, unifying force in independent music – in its most literal interpretation.

The brainchild of mastermind Elizabeth Wight, Love Grenades is the unlikely beat-driven collision of electro-pop, Italo disco and punk that’s winning over Los Angeles audiences. With a new EP on the scene early 2010 on Modus Vivendi Music, Love Grenades will steal your heart and rock your world.

Other November 2009 Dates:

Love Grenades – Best new band of the year – Rock NYC

Catchy + sexy – Hard Candy

Love Grenades…has been igniting dance parties all throughout the indie music scene with its electro-fused punk hits – Filter

Who can ignore the eclectic sound that’s making hearts throb all over Los Angeles… Love Grenades have won our hearts – VAMPD Magazine

Make your heart explode with their sultry electronic dance pop numbers – Amateur Chemist

Last night, Sunday November 1, 2009, we attended the 7th annual Urban Music Awards (UMA) at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.

Dave and I made our way to London via the Oxford Tube bus which is convenient and not too pricey. We were somewhat entertained by strangers Charlie and his mates, sitting behind us. It was difficult not to overhear their excitement and conversation regarding their plans for the evening, which was going to the Snowboarding World Cup event at Battersea Power Station. While they were discussing their evening, we were getting excited too, on our way to the Urban Music Awards.

Bloomsbury is one of my favorite areas in London. It was the first place I stayed when I arrived in England a few years ago. This time of year, the streets are especially quaint, walking along, over the crisp fallen leaves… so I wasn’t too disappointed to find out that although we arrived, press passes in hand, at the Bloomsbury Theatre on time, we were an hour early. So, with some time to spare, we wandered around and found our way to the pleasant Cafe Toscana.

An hour later and back at the theatre, things were bustling and as the crowd made their way into the reception area, we headed straight for the bar…and then proceeded to people watch. A very nice looking crowd indeed, many dressed to the max, girls in short sequined dresses of all colors, guys dressed in suits along with some familiar faces.

One of those familiar faces was none other than Levi Roots! He was up for an award in the Best Entrepreneur category, which I felt was well deserved as we’ve been following his career since his successful appearance on BBC’s Dragon’s Den when he was given funding for his – and my favorite – Reggae Reggae Sauce.

We talked to Levi before the show. He has a new album and video out, and I asked him if he plans to come out with a milder Reggae Reggae Sauce. He said the current sauce isn’t that spicy! He looked great, a sharp dresser, and I was happy to find out that his warm and friendly personality that comes across on TV is the same in person.

Watch Levi Roots – “So Out Of My Mind” video:

After the announcement that the awards show was about to begin, we went into the theatre, found some good seats, and we were ready for the show.

Awards Presenters included:

Best Producer: Blessed Beats
Best Hip Hop Act: Sway
Best Music Video: K.I.G “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes”
Best UK Asian Act: R.D.B
Best Gospel Act: Guvna B
Best R&B Act: Brick & Lace

The founder of the Urban Music Awards Jordan Kensington thanked his mother who was in attendance and talked about helping to get kids inspired at 200 schools and colleges. Children in The Urban Poets vs Double MDO (not sure of the spelling) performed poems about success, and from audience response, Double MDO won the Young Achievers Award.

I hope to get official documentation regarding winners, performances etc. which I’ll publish here on BandWeblogs.com when available, or in the meantime, go to the Urban Music Awards Official website.

Notable Performances / Ones to Watch: Sway; Wild Sugar: hopefully I’m spelling that right – I’m unable to locate their website, but Wild Sugar was fantastic. Three girls singing up front with nine dancers behind them. The main vocalist’s voice was somewhat reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, with some scat singing thrown in for good measure. Great to hear young artists singing in that style; Meleka: she has a great voice, looked fabulous on stage in her sparkly silver dress and I really like her debut single “Go”. She pulled Entrepreneur of the Year Levi Roots up to the stage and he good-naturedly danced along with her; Swedish rapper Lazee; Cleopatra: when they presented the Best R&B Act Award, they sang part of a song acapella and announced that they’ll be back in 2010. I’ll look forward to hearing their new material.

The night was fun and entertaining and the setting was intimate. There were some glitches – a couple times when presenters were announced to come out, we were left in complete silence as nothing happened – to then be told that the presenter wasn’t available to present the award. But I guess “technical difficulties” are to be expected at this kind of event.

Also, it was disappointing to see that it wasn’t a full house and I’m not sure if that was due to keeping the awards show more low key this year because of the violence that erupted, as Sway mentioned when he accepted his award, last year at the larger 2008 Urban Music Awards at the O2 arena in London, or if there were other reasons.

I hope that more people continue to go out and support UK artists of this genre, either by checking out live shows and/or buying the music, as there are a lot of talented artists and musicians out there, performing their craft and entertaining audiences.

On our way back home on the Oxford Tube, we were coincidentally reunited with – still strangers – Charlie and his mates, as they sat behind us again and loudly talked about the Snowboarding World Cup and the winners of the event. It was good to hear the results.

New Album ‘It’s Frightening’ released January 25th on Mute

New York six-piece, White Rabbits make their much anticipated return for a must-see gig at Water Rats, November 18, 2009, to light the fuse on the impending release of their hotly awaited new album, ‘It’s Frightening’ (January 25, 2010, UK release).

As a live band they have gained a fierce reputation as a highly-charged, interchangeable six-piece, pumping with energy, featuring two drummers and three singers. Their live show also captures the band’s softer and more melodic moments, showcasing their genre busting sound.

This London show comes off the back of an extensive tour of the US and is followed by a string of European and Australian dates.

They release their thrilling single “Percussion Gun”, January 11th, which has already been given an upfront play by Zane Lowe as his ‘Hottest Record In The World’.

It’s the first release from forthcoming album ‘It’s Frightening’ out January 25th. Watch this space for news of a White Rabbits UK tour in the New Year.

A Star Shines On TV… Camilla Kerslake Filmed GMTV Appearance With Gary Barlow This Friday

21-year-old Camilla Kerslake begins her small screen charge THIS Friday, October 30th, with her television appearance on GMTV in a filmed studio piece with Gary Barlow, which is immediately followed by a live performance in the GMTV studio on Monday (November 2nd).

Newly signed to Gary Barlow’s record label Future Records, Camilla is the voice of Waitrose’s Christmas TV ads, with her sublime version of “How Can I Keep From Singing”.

It’s one of the many standout tracks from her magical self-titled debut album, released November 23rd.

Other highlights include a breathtaking performance of “Rule The World” in Italian and immaculate version of “She Moved Through The Fair”, which is being championed by Terry Wogan on Radio 2.

In addition to this, Camilla has been inundated with TV performances and appearances in the weeks leading up to the release of her debut album including:

Children In Need, Alan Titchmarsh, The One Show, This Morning, BBC Breakfast and Singing For The Troops on Christmas Eve.

The story of Camilla Kerslake is one that dreams are made of. Only this summer she would incessantly drop off demos at a London studio for weeks on end. Inside Take That were recording and Camilla was determined to give Gary the demo tape she had saved up to record. Her persistence paid off and he eventually listened.

Camilla is a special guest for Il Divo’s two Christmas shows at Hammersmith Apollo, December 7th and 8th where she performs two duets with them as well as three solo performances.

The Wildhearts announce special Christmas shows + special birthday show for Ginger!

Ginger said, “I can’t wait to tread the boards with the guys again. The last tour showed us what we’re capable of, and now I’m in the gym getting in proper shape to see exactly what we can achieve. This is just the start, just watch us go.”

Deadwax are quickly becoming south west London’s hottest rock and roll outfit.

Deadwax have a sound mixing old and new whilst retaining their own modern identity. Influenced by The Beatles, Supergrass, Oasis, BRMC, 2009 is set to be a great year for Deadwax.

Since signing a record deal with Monotwin Records, 2009 has already seen them headlining prestigious London venues and summer festivals to capacity crowds.

Deadwax just headlined the show at the New England Patriots vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game – the only NFL game in the UK this year – at Wembley Stadium on 25 October 2009. They also released their debut single “Tearing Each Other Apart”.

You can currently text WAX to 81088 for your download.

Deadwax are in the studio preparing their debut EP and album, due for release early 2010.

“Deadwax are a vibrant outfit with massive potential and an electric live show…” – Head of RAK Records

“Deadwax are definitely the most promising band I have seen in a long time, it wont be long before you hear them on the radio, we are behind them all the way…” – Tony Barker, Head of TX Media

“Deadwax were a fantastic addition to our festival line-up, and one of the best live acts I’ve seen in a long time. Keep an eye on this lot, they’re going to be big…” – Joe Russell, Head of Events, Westfield London

“Deadwax are the only band I’ve been scared to have support us, because they are so good!! A fantastic addition to any line-up…” – Marner Brown, recently signed to Road Warrior Entertainment USA

Check them out live at 100 club, Oxford St, London on the 5th November 2009 where they’re set to support Saint Jude.

ABOUT THE SAW DOCTORS

The band’s remarkable resurgence over the past year has brought them to a whole new audience who will welcome this opportunity to soak up the songs that have delighted Saw Doctors fans since 1990, when they scored their first No1 with I Useta Lover.

Formed in 1986, The Saw Doctors were helped along the road to fame and fortune when they were taken under the wing of Mike Scott of The Waterboys who saw them during their six-week residency at the Quays Bar, Galway. Scott took them on tour with The Waterboys and produced their rousing, singalong debut single, N17, which does for the West Of Ireland what Route 66 did for America.

Despite their abiding love of Ireland, The Saw Doctors’ refuse to see their native land through rose-tinted glasses and have never shied away from controversy. They parodied catholic confession in Bless Me Father, took a hilarious swipe at a disgraced former Bishop of Galway in Howya Julia, and appeared live on TV at the 1991 IRMA Awards with singer Davy Carton dressed as a priest and the rest of the band dressed as altar boys.

Perhaps the best-publicised departure from the fold came in 1993, when keyboardist Tony Lambert jumped ship after winning approximately one million euros when he hit the jackpot in the Irish Lottery. It’s interesting to reflect that he quit the band after winning just once. Had he remained, he’d have won twice, when the band hit No1 again last year with their rousing cover of The Sugababes “About You Now”.

Current Line-up

Davy Carton: Vocals, Guitar
Leo Moran: Guitars, Vocals
Anthony Thistlethwaite: Bass Guitar, Saxophone
Kevin Duffy: Keyboards, Vocals
Eimhin Cradock: Drums, Vocals
