Santa Barbara-based reggae band Rebelution is set to release sophomore full-length album ‘Bright Side of Life’, in stores nationwide and digital worldwide on August 4, 2009.

The album follows up their award winning debut album ‘Courage to Grow,’ which garnered mass downloads and radio play on monster radio stations such as San Francisco’s Live 105 where their single “Safe and Sound” was played on heavy rotation, with spins on San Diego’s 91X, and Los Angeles’ KROQ.

The album was also selected as iTunes Editor’s Choice for Best Reggae Album of 2007, and has been in the top 10 iTunes Reggae album sales since its release two years ago. In addition, ‘Courage to Grow’ remained in the Billboard Top 10 Reggae Chart for 36 weeks, and peaked at #4.

Now for the summer of 2009, the band is ready to unleash 12 new signature tracks blending their cohesive mix of reggae, rock, and hip-hop influences in a calliope awash of front man Eric Rachmany’s Santana-esque guitar flurries, Marley D. Williams’ solid and attacking bass lines, the psychedelic and tasteful piano, keyboard and Hammond b-3 styling of Rory Carey and the jazz rock fusion of Wesley Finley’s finesse drumming and percussion.

Of the new album, Rebelution shares, “After the positive response from fans and critics for ‘Courage to Grow’ and touring in support of it for the last few years, we are glad to finally reveal our new material to the fans who have waited so patiently. We’ve played many of the new songs live, but the recorded versions will have that ’studio magic’ from all the time we’ve put into them, and there are surprise songs that people haven’t heard yet.”

The release of ‘Bright Side of Life’ marks the first release under Rebelution’s newly founded record label, 87 Music in association with Controlled Substance Sound Labs and Silverback Music, the California based music collective, which is also home to artists Slightly Stoopid and Pepper, and their respective artist imprints. The band notes that their second album will show their growth in maturity musically, with a more polished sound with flares of new styles that fans and future fans have yet to hear.

For the rest of 2009 moving into 2010, Rebelution plans on touring to follow up their previous national efforts which included sold out shows at venues such as The House of Blues San Diego, Anaheim and Los Angeles as well as The Fillmore in San Francisco and more in Florida, Colorado, Texas and South Carolina.

They have already shared the stage with notable artists such as The Offspring, 311, Slightly Stoopid, Willie Nelson, Damian Marley, Bob Dylan and Ludacris.

Rebelution will also be recording an “iTunes Live Exclusive at the Palms in Las Vegas” feature later on this year.

Even if you're not one of Slightly Stoopid's fans (and judging from MySpace there are a lot of them out there), you should know what you are going to get from the title of this CD of 'outtakes, rarities and a couple of new joints' ...

Even if you’re not one of Slightly Stoopid’s fans (and judging from MySpace there are a lot of them out there), you should know what you are going to get from the title of this CD of ‘outtakes, rarities and a couple of new joints’.

Indeed, in that respect, ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid‘ doesn’t disappoint – efficient and proficient dub/ska/stoner jams, drenched in the California sunshine and liberal helpings of weed – though the band are clearly that peculiarly American breed of stoner who are fearsomely focussed on business.

No criticism this, it has allowed them to preserve their amiably shuffling music whilst playing a whole load of American dates, and I mean a load, producing a large back catalogue, and developing an impressive on-line presence.

But here’s the problem with weed – if you’re stoned, then a little bit of dubby bass, offbeat chops and the odd overdriven guitar solo is all it takes to make you very happy indeed. Throw in some cute and well-designed on-line gizmos (’Stoopid Search and Win – Search the Web and Win Prizes’), and you have all you need to reel ‘em in. Rebellion 2.0 (’all we need is good sensie’ – “No Cocaine”).

But then, there’s stoner jams and stoner jams; if the dubby bass is proper, if the chops are sharp, then they do their work whether you are stoned or not. And whilst some of the tracks on the CD only promise to kick off before wandering away apologetically (”I Would Do For You”, “Thinkin Bout Cops”), and one is just plain terrible cheesy hell (”On and On”), others are well, not quite righteous, but pretty damn good (”London Dub”, “Train 1″).

This outtake CD then, like all outtake CDs, is patchy, mopping up the stuff which didn’t make it onto earlier releases. But Slightly Stoopid are nothing if not prolific (if the band are to be believed, much of the material here comes from the sessions for their latest ‘proper’ release which generated ‘forty to fifty’ songs), and are building up their growing reputation on the back of incessant touring, which is exactly how it should be.

One for the fans, then, this; the slightly sceptical Stoopid neophyte is no doubt advised to check out their earlier releases such as ‘Acoustic Roots’ or ‘Closer to the Sun’ (or perhaps just light up a fat one and go with the flow).

The biggest band you don’t know about…The Slightly Stoopid story can be traced to Ocean Beach, California, when childhood chums Miles and Kyle formed the group in 1995, mixing reggae and punk sounds into one smooth stylistic cocktail. Soon after, late/great Sublime frontman Brad Nowell caught wind of the group, and signed them to his Skunk Records label – while the band members were still in high school.

For over a decade now, Slightly Stoopid has been supplying its fans with tunes that have served as the perfect summer soundtrack and ultimate live party. So it should be fitting that the group, that has been led from the beginning by Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty (who share vocal/guitar/bass duties), take it to the stage this dog day season for “Tailgate 2008 Summer Tour,” kicking off in Las Vegas on August 1, 2008 and playing some two dozen cities across the US before they wrap up on September 6 in their hometown of San Diego, CA.

‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’

This will be the band’s first-ever sole headlining trek of amphitheatres and will feature Pepper and reggae legends Sly and Robbie. And let’s not forget the arrival of the group’s tenth release overall – the odds and ends collection ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’ – which was released July 22nd on the group’s newly formed label, Stoopid Records.

“We did an album called ‘Closer to the Sun,’ and we had a bunch of songs – we went in and recorded 50 or 60 songs because we were having so much fun,” explains Kyle. “We had way too much for that album – we put out ‘Not Stoned Enough’ originally as a six-song bonus CD, only available in a limited pressing, with the pre-sale of the original album. People ended up liking it but not being able to get it. We went in and recorded some more songs in a session with the Inner Circle guys at their Circle House Studios in Miami, added a couple of songs from here and there, and just wrapped it up.”

‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’ is not your average oddities collection, as it keeps the chain intact of Slightly Stoopid releases that are incredibly stylistically varied, as evidenced by such standouts as an impeccably deep and dubby cover of UB40’s “I Would Do For You,” the irresistible acoustic jive of “Train 1″ and “Train 2,” into the classic “Know You Rider” awash a mishmash of dub instrumental outtakes. What’s bound to catch the eye of many longtime fans is the inclusion of such longtime live favorites as “False Rhythms” and “Sensimilla,” both of which are featured as studio renditions for the first time ever, amid new jams such as “No Cocaine” and “Supernatural” which will no doubt keep the band’s hardest core fans very happy.

Besides looking forward to touring with their friends, Slightly Stoopid is especially looking forward to playing in front of their always-growing fan base, or as they’re affectionately known, ‘Stoopid Heads.’ “They’re just maniacs straight-up, and we love them. Without them, we’d just be playing at the bar. They make it worth our while – when we go out and people are having that good of a time, the energy goes back and forth. Just a good time – we just rely on each other’s energy.” With the arrival of ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’ and the stellar tour that they’ve put together, there will certainly be no shortage of energy at Slightly Stoopid shows this summer.
