Atomic Brother is one of only about 100 bands and DJs selected to perform showcases at this year’s Baltimore Music Conference, taking place September 17-20 at venues throughout Baltimore.

Atomic Brother’s showcase is 10 PM Friday, September 19 at Bedrock, 401 W Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD.

The Baltimore Music Conference’s mission is to support and nurture the local scene, and showcase talent that needs exposure. “It’s easy to get lost among the 1000+ performers at other conferences,” says bassist S.A. Sebastian Gnolfo, “We’re excited to be playing a conference where the organizers are making an effort to give each performer maximum exposure.”

In addition to the band’s performance, Atomic Brother bass player, Sebastian, will be speaking on the conference’s Podcast/Webcasting Panel, earlier Friday afternoon, discussing “changes in how people are being exposed to music,” and the making of band’s video podcast, Wastin’ Time With Atomic Brother.

About Atomic Brother:

Atomic Brother was formed in 2003 by James Melillo on lead vocals and guitar and S.A. Sebastian Gnolfo on bass and vocals. Calling themselves, “Alternative Hard Rock,” many listeners compare Atomic Brother’s music to Disturbed, Megadeth, Alice In Chains, Henry Rollins, Ramones, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.

Atomic Brother, spent the last year performing in support of their debut album, See Me Comin’, which has garnered the band international attention and support, especially in Switzerland, where the album was recorded. The song “Everything and Less” reached #7 on Zürich-based Redaktion Rockstation radio charts, and SwissRecords.com asserts that, “Atomic Brother can certainly write powerful songs.” The band’s podcast, now in its second year, often gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at songwriting and recording, rehearsing and performing, the sometimes not-so-rock and roll side of being in a band in New York City, and sometimes just fooling around and having fun.

About the Baltimore Music Conference:
The Baltimore Music Conference is about supporting and nurturing the local scene, as well as bringing visiting talent into our city. Set up predominantly to showcase those who need exposure, but also those who have made a name for themselves in the music industry as we believe each benefits and can help one another.

The 2008 Baltimore Music Conference takes September 17-20, at 14 venues throughout Baltimore. For more information about the Baltimore Music Conference, please contact Lisa Chaplin Suit - Executive Director / Founder of the Baltimore Music Conference at LSuit @ bmcon.org.

Grammy Award Winner of the Faith Hill/Tim McGraw song “Like We Never Loved At All” and former leader of the Philadelphia phenomenon Wanderlust, Scot Sax, launches his new publishing company Songlife Artists Inc. with a special artist showcase on Saturday, July 26th, 2008 at Milkboy Coffee, 2 East Lancaster Ave., PA. Call 610-645-5269 or visit www.milkboycoffee.com for information and tickets.

Scot Sax’s idea for a publishing company came to him after he began to give back to the musical community that has been giving so much to him over the years. “I placed an ad online earlier this year for songwriters that needed help, whether it was with their writing or information on how to get people to hear their songs in the music business.” Scot was pleased with the result. “It turned out to be one of the most satisfying things I’ve done. Knowing I could help in any way felt amazing.”

But something unexpected occurred when Scot was working with the unknown writers. “I met lots of songwriters and there were a few times where I heard songs I couldn’t believe were coming from folks no one has heard of. I realized there was a lot of talent out there.”

One particular writer he took a special interest in, and one who will be performing at the showcase, was Paulette Dixon. “She played me a few of her songs on our first mentoring session.” Paulette was one of the writers who answered the original online ad. “I gave her an ‘assignment’ not unlike one I was given by Warner/Chappell Music Publishing when I first visited LA. The assignment was to write 10 songs and come back in two weeks,” a request that Scot referred to as “seemingly insane”, but Paulette did just that. “When pushed, a writer writes,” Scot says. Paulette came back with 10 new songs. “One of them, I’ll Be Seeing You, knocked me out!” It seemed Scot’s mentoring was working.

A musical relationship with Dixon developed further. “I started thinking of places she could go with the song: publishing companies, etc.” That’s when Paulette asked Scot a question that changed everything. “Paulette asked, ‘Why don’t you start your own publishing company?’ That’s how Songlife Artists was born,” says Scot.

Paulette Dixon is not the only act signed and represented by Scot. John Stanton, an old friend and one-time high school band-mate of Scot’s, and the brother duo, GoldenCarr, Jeff Golden and Tom Carr, ages 12 and 16 respectively, are part of the Songlife Company and too will be performing.

“John Stanton has developed into one of the strongest writers and singers I’ve heard in a long time. GoldenCarr, who I met at Milkboy Bryn Mawr’s Open Mic Night, jumped onstage and did the Beatles’ Yer Blues note for note, word for word, and then an original, All Your Love Has Given Me. They knocked me out of my chair.”

Scot is straightforward about the company’s goal. “What I want to do is simply get these great artists and songs exposure.” And Scot realizes that so much of what is success in the music business always comes back to the old Woody Allen adage: “Ninety percent is showing up.”

“It really is sad to think of how many talented people are out there that don’t realize it’s just a matter of going for it that can get them and their songs recognized. This has become a passion for me.”

Scot practices what he preaches. “I felt the same way about Sharon Little two years ago.” Sharon Little was a little known but extremely talented singer/songwriter from the West Chester area. She teamed up with Scot and they went it for it: making demos, doing gigs and really putting themselves out there.

“Now Sharon is on tour with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The dynamic duo heard our demo that we made in my house in Ardmore and picked her to tour with them,” says Scot.

To Scot it’s always been a simple equation. “It always comes down to the song, then getting it out there and pounding the pavement.” It’s an equation that has served Scot well over the years. And it’s this no nonsense attitude that Scot applies to his work with Songlife Artists.

“That’s what Songlife is about: honest songs and hard work.”

On July 26th, Scot and his recently signed Songlife artists will perform at Milkboy. Scot will host the evening and no doubt bring some of his award winning material to the table. Paulette Dixon, John Stanton, and GoldenCarr will provide sets of original music that inspired Scot in the first place.

Songlife Artist Inc. Launch and Showcase. Saturday July 26th at Milkboy Coffee Ardmore, 2 East Lancaster Avenue, 8pm. Tickets $10 presale, $12 at the door. Call 610-645-5269 or www.milkboycoffee.com

Bios
Scot Sax grew up in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. As a kid his parents, brought him to NY’s Greenwich Village regularly. That, along with his older brother’s massive record collection, started a passionate relationship with song-writing and performing. In 1995 his band Wanderlust was signed to RCA. The band had a hit with Scot’s song I Walked. They toured with COLLECTIVE SOUL and opened for THE WHO in 1996.
After signing a song-writing deal with Warner/Chappell in LA in 1998, Scot saw his songs on many artist’s albums and in movies like AMERICAN PIE for which he received a GOLD RECORD.
Currently on tour with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (w/ Sharon Little), Scot recently won much recognition for his co-written GRAMMY Winning Song Like We Never Loved At All performed by FAITH HILL and TIM MCGRAW.

Paulette Dixon: Since her childhood, Paulette has been writing songs about love, loss, God and life. Not realizing that songwriting could be more than responding to a moment of inspiration, she gave corporate life a try but she knew something was missing. When Paulette met Scot Sax, she found a friend and mentor who challenged her to write more, work hard, and consider it a job. With his encouragement, Paulette returned to writing full-time and in the process she found what was missing.

John Stanton: has been writing songs since back in the day when he and Scot played together in their first band in high school. John is honored to be a part of the Songlife family. He owes so much of what he’s learned about writing from his old band mate. He is also is a playwright and Co-Artistic Director of Madhouse Theater Company out of Philadelphia.

GoldenCarr: Jeff Golden, 12 and Tom Carr, 16, began performing together at family talent shows. Last December, the brothers performed at an open mike at Bryn Mawr’s Milkboy and the combination of folksy blues combined with an indie sound got the attention of Scot Sax, who emceed the open mike that night. Scot and the brothers worked together to produce the boys’ album Come Have a Day. (Songlife Artists)
Tom Carr, a junior at Bonner High School, writes all of the songs. His songs depict at times a world-weary view of life and love that one might expect from an older songwriter. At other times, Tom’s vocals and lyrics inspire memories of adolescence as only one in the moment could.
Jeffrey Golden, a Drexel Hill Middle School student, has been drawn to the guitar since he was three years old. Some years and a few guitars later, Jeff collaborates with Tom extensively. Jeff names Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, BB King and Led Zeppelin as his musical inspirations.

Milkboy Coffee: is an all-ages venue. They’re open early for coffee junkies and stay open late for shows and creative arts events. Their mission is to be a creative community meeting place where people’s minds and bellies can be filled. Milkboy Coffee is the venue that gives many local and national acts a stage to showcase their art to an appreciative audience. Milkboy is most heavily rooted in music. They began twelve years ago as Milkboy Recording, which is still thriving only a block from the coffee shop.

Duo Karen YOUNG & Eric AUCLAIR :: ElectroBeatniks will soon fly to London, UK for a showcase presentation of its upcoming CD at London Calling 2008. This first international invitation for the Duo puts us in such joy, we decided to invite fans and friends to a pre-London Calling Concert this Thursday June 12th at 8:00pm at Montreal’s Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur.

Duo Karen YOUNG & Eric AUCLAIR :: ElectroBeatniks is presently closing in on final production stage of it s first CD at Montreal’s Karisma Studio. This very unique musical project-jazz electro croos generation & genre - CD’s launch will surely raise lots of attention. Meanwhile, it is with great pleasure that Karen and Eric accepted CIRPA’s invitation - Canadian Independent Record Production Association - to showcase, as part of the first Canadian delegation at London Calling, to representatives of the UK and international live and recording music programmers participating to this important international music event.

Duo YOUNG & AUCLAIR :: ElectroBeatniks is the first of Karen’s projects bearing only her lyrics. The Duo also co-wrote 100% of all its music, while Eric Auclair is credited for 200% of the sampling and sound treatment. As always with Karen, this is great fusion. But the most interesting aspect of their achievement lies in their cross genre&generation fusion. This, from last year’s Roseq tour programme, is how their concert is presented.

Duo YOUNG & AUCLAIR :: ElectroBeatniks - A true live performance. With Karen Young’s signature, you can be certain it is great. Voice and double bass in duo is a favorite jazz combo. Here it comes with a +: Eric AUCLAIR’s sampling-pre-recorded and live. Powerful and rich or lace-like textures are used as sound-track to Karen’s crystal-clear voice and poetic songs. Electro-Beatniks, the title to this Duo concert and upcoming CD brings their jazz into the 21st century. Original songs, the incomparable voice of Karen YOUNG and the flowing bass lines of Eric AUCLAIR.

From songs to jazz, improv to sampling, and Ars Nova to slam. This exquisite concert is not to be missed!

Getting by in the music industry can sometimes seem like a minefield of myths and unanswered questions. Whether you’re mastering your next hit album or just trying to get a busking licence, without the required help it can seem like a daunting task.
From 2nd – 6th June this year, London’s City Showcase aims to change all that when it holds a series of workshops and surgeries (one on one sessions) for the general public. Held at The Apple Store (Regent Street W1), The Gibson Studio (Rathbone Street, W1) and the Nokia Flagship Store (W1), the workshops will unite aspiring musicians, songwriters, agents and up-and-coming managers, labels, publishers and A & Rs as industry experts teach them how to write, produce, distribute, market, protect, publish and earn money from music.
Ranging from the academic (‘The Future Of The Music Industry’) to the creative (‘The Songwriting Masterclass’) the workshops have in the past achieved critical acclaim. Previous speakers include Steve Lamacq, Mark Goodier, Jonathan Shalit, Nitin Sawhney, Martin Talbot, Paul Birch, Guy Chambers, Stephen Budd, Graham Gouldman and many more.
For those registering for the workshops at The Apple Store there is also a special offer - the first five registered attendees of each City Showcase workshop held at the store who check in at the workshop registration desk with a City Showcase wrist band will receive TEN FREE downloads from the iTunes store. (Wristbands are available from www.cityshowcase.co.uk)
As well as its educational element, the City Showcase Festival (which returns in June for a 6th consecutive year) is renowned for showcasing the best in new music. It has previously played host to Amy Winehouse, Newton Faulkner, Keane, Razorlight, Scouting For Girls, Ray LaMontagne, Hot Chip, Sway, Razorlight, and Lady Sovereign, who all began their long and winding road to fame and fortune with performances on the City Showcase stage…
For a detailed list of all the workshops and surgeries please see the following table.

Disc Makers Kicks Off 2008 Independent Music World Series with More Prizes and Exposure for Indie Artists

Disc Makers’ premier showcase, with over $250,000 in cash & prizes, gives independent artists the opportunity to play for top industry professionals in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta

PENNSAUKEN, NJ - Disc Makers, the nation’s leading independent CD manufacturer, is kicking off their 13th annual Independent Music World Series (IMWS), the biggest installment yet of the nation’s longest running and most successful indie music showcase series. Over 5,000 bands are expected to enter the 2008 IMWS, and Disc Makers has sweetened this year’s pot by elevating the total prize package to over $250,000 in cash and prizes.
http://www.discmakers.com/imws

The IMWS consists of four showcase events in four major U.S cities (2008 cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta). Each regional event features six acts selected as finalists by the editors of Billboard Magazine. The six finalists in each showcase compete for the grand prize in front of music industry professionals at some of the hottest live music venues in America, such as the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles and Crash Mansion in New York.

“The Independent Music World Series is all about helping artists make it on their own,” commented Tony van Veen, President of Disc Makers. “We’re looking for the best original artists in the U.S. Unlike other events that reward just a great voice or a good song, the IMWS is about the whole package: originality, great songwriting, and the artist’s on-stage performance. Between the opportunity to network and be noticed by industry insiders and win enough gear to outfit their own home studio, the showcase slots at the IMWS offer independent artists’ careers a shot in the arm like no other opportunity today.”

The four regional IMWS winners will claim a grand prize package worth over $50,000 that includes world-class gear from leading manufacturers, recording time in select studios, and cash. Furthermore, each act chosen to perform at the four showcases (24 acts total) will receive $1,000 in cash and gear from selected sponsors.

This year’s grand prize package features everything independent musicians need for a career boost including a complete CD manufacturing package, post-production sweetening, and promotional posters and T-shirts from Disc Makers, a Digital Studio Workstation from Zoom Audio, studio recording software from Cakewalk, professional Shure microphones, Ibanez guitars and basses, a drum kit from Tama, Electric Guitar and Electric Bass Strings from Dean Markley, Remo drumheads, a Sabian cymbal package, and a year-long membership to TAXI. Additional event partners include Samson Audio, Sonicbids, Billboard, Electronic Musician, Remix and Drum! magazine.

The IMWS is open to all musicians not currently signed to a major record label. All styles and genres of music are welcome. Past winning genres and their winners include: Singer Songwriter (Amber deLaurentis, Chinua Hawk), Hard Rock (Dirty Power), Punk/Pop (Bang Sugar Bang), Pop Rock (Plain Jane Automobile, Rich Creamy Paint), Hip Hop (The Urban Sophisticates, BurnDown All-Stars, Dura Hale), Electronic Pop Rock (Brice Woodall), Jazz (Orbert Davis), Bluegrass Rock (Rose’s Pawn Shop), Rock (Shipwreck Union), Salsa (Bio Ritmo), Country/American (Deadman), Jam (Gamble Brothers Band).

Registration is now open for this year’s showcase series at http://www.discmakers.com/imws

Submissions must be postmarked by May 14th, 2008. For more information, please contact Jessica Darrican at jessicadarrican@maxborgesagency.com or 305-576-1171 X16.

Songwriters of every genre converge on Music Row for The Nashville SongWriters Festival on the third week of June, each year. It’s part festival, part music conference, part business networking opportunity and part gathering of old friends. Tune smiths share their original music on multiple outdoor stages and Open Sing Rings located directly on Music Row. Writers can also attend classes, workshops, and Q & A sessions about the craft and business of songwriting between jam sessions. Another fest feature is the Open House held by participating music related businesses where writers drop by to ask questions, exchange samples or discuss what part they play in the music biz. The live performances, education and Open House are concurrently running events. Attendees take in all or parts and can play it by ear.

http://www.songwritersfestival.com

“The fest is open to all forms of songwriting, from the novice to the professional. There are no pre qualifications to play or attend. Everyone is encouraged to come as they are. All attendees will have the opportunity to share their words or music and find their place in the mix. The festival is not a contest or competition which makes for a more relaxing creative atmosphere,” says festival producer Cornelius “Popcorn” Robertson. There is no set registration fee to attend the fest, Each individual determines how they can contribute to help be a part of the music magic.”

“Last year Curb Music, Artist Partners and others helped out with stage locations. Staff writers from Sony/BMG, Warner-Chappell/Ash Street Music, Curb and many others chipped in some top notch songwriting talent, Brian White, Dillon Dixon, Don Poythress, Billy Montana to name a few.” Popcorn continues, “Industry professionals Dave Gibson, Stan Web, and others hit writers hosted sessions at the Writers Retreat. Sure Fire Music participated in the Open House and so on. ASCAP, BMI and SESAC writers all came together. Publishers, recording studios, producers, song pluggers, managers, and others were in attendance as a broad spectrum of the industry, past, present and future were there getting the feel.”

“This June 20-22, another historical gathering begins to shape up as Stella Parton (27+ charted songs) to Guitar master Boomer Castleman (inventor of the Palm Pedal guitar) throw down at this years congregation to celebrate the spirit of the songwriter. Many special guest and surprises await but the real featured writer is you, as we glimpse into the past, present and future of songwriting together.”

Sign up’s are open for the 2008 season. For more information visit www.SongWritersFestival.com, call 615-424-1491 or email Popcorn@SongWritersFestival.com
