“Music Is The Weapon: Voices United Across Borders” is an ongoing experiment in breaking through America’s current protectionist mentality that creates so many obstacles and restrictions for musicians, and for artists in general. While countries around the world welcome American musicians, international musicians are finding it increasingly difficult to enter and work in the U.S. Issues such as obtaining visas, dealing with senseless homeland security laws, lack of music industry support, lack of media interest, prohibitive expenses, etc. – are among the major obstacles encountered by musicians in this country.

The participating musicians all come from the collision of different cultures and traditions. Although we share a common language called music, our experiences and backgrounds define our various dialects. This project connects multicultural musicians across national boundaries, to perform together in a rich and vibrant exchange of cultural expression, and hopefully create some new musical dialects in the process!

In the spirit of internationalism, we invite you to join us in a celebration of joining forces across borders – in this case, Europe, United States and Canada.

MusicDish – http://www.musicdish.net
BAMcafé Live: Friday, April 4th – 10pm

* SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA ( http://www.souljazzorchestra.com )
Each of these two nights will inspire its own unique mix that reflects the bands that will be performing.

After the triumphant debut of their “3.0″ lineup at the Horseshoe last month, Toronto electro-punks first person shooter are set to play their next live mission at the Mod Club on Saturday, April 19, 2008. With shows more like electronic dance parties than rock concerts, and the crowds increasing as fast as the buzz that surrounds them, first person shooter’s next mission at the Mod Club promises to be one for the ages.

first person shooter, originally formed in May 2005 and revamped in December 2006, have grown from a straight-up garage rock band to a highly tuned electro-punk outfit. With more than 50 live shows under their belt, the band felt it was important to take a little time off this winter to add to their lineup and work on new material. “Player Three (Ryan Couture) programs all our drums-but was stuck playing guitar onstage.” says Nikkole Stone (Player Two). Enter the new guitar-slinging fifth player Andy DuRego, a seasoned metalhead ready for the challenge. The band unveiled their new lineup in February at the Horseshoe to a crowd of more than 200 frenzied fans, and is excited to be following this up with a turn at the Mod Club in Toronto. When asked about the band’s nerves going into such a large venue, Christina Kontos (Player One) replied: “Oh we’re ready to play, alright! We’re excited for the Mod Club mission. The only question is: are they ready to dance??”

first person shooter will be the special guests of DJ and Host MRK at the Mod Club on Saturday April 19, followed by the latest Electronic/UK, Indie and Rock as spun by DJ Bobbi Guy, DJ DaSilva and DJ Benny K. Doors are at 10pm and the party kicks off with fps at 11pm. No cover before 11pm with guest list-email band@firstpersonshooter.ca to reserve your spot on the guest list and on the dance floor.

For more information on first person shooter, check out their website http://www.firstpersonshooter.ca or visit their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/1stpersonshooter

For Immediate Release:

Multiculturalism in Rock — American Musician DIRK HAMILTON Puts Lyrics In Italian

San Francisco, Calif. -
Dirk Hamilton is back from a month-long tour of Italy. This makes a total of three months there this year. He’s been touring in Italy every year since a fan/promoter encouraged him to come over and ‘do some shows’ more than fifteen years ago — and today his brand of roots-based alternative rock has a sizable italian following there.

The Ghost of Van Gogh is Hamilton’s latest CD, and this time the lyrics in the booklet are translated into Italian right next to the English. His Italian fans buy his music and fill piazzas, clubs and concert halls to see him perform. But the subtle word play in many of his songs must be nearly impossible for Italians to decipher. In fact, the Italian reviews of his shows seem strange by American standards. Italian writers often describe Hamilton’s physical mannerisms and emotive vocals as measures of the depth of his soulfulness, yet don’t mention at all the content of the songs —his lyrics— the originality of which he’s known for here in America.

Hamilton speaks fairly fluent Italian now because of the amount of time he has spent in Italy over the years. And while many of his friends there do understand some English, he knows that even one everyday idiom or colloquialism is enough to throw a non-native speaker off. After all, his layered poetry turns up multiple meanings even for native english speakers. So he rounded up the services of one of his italian friends living in America, Micol Biasetti, and set about translating all twelve new songs. The kind of translation problems to be overcome reveal themselves in titles like “The Magoombies,” “I’m the Thug of Love,” “All and Nothin’” and the enigmatic “Caterpillars in My Ears”. In the song “Meadow” for instance, Hamilton takes a look at the nature of human impact versus the resilience of the planet — and in the very first line, all of the following occur: a nursery rhyme is turned on it’s head, words that cannot be looked-up are created, and a familiar idiom is trotted out: “When Lumberjack and Lumberjill go out to play, Mother Nature takes a lickin’.” Any meaning-knots such as these were either unraveled by Micol herself, or she flagged them for Hamilton’s explanation before proceeding. The result is a CD package that provides italian speakers with close to the same experience of the artistic value of Hamilton’s lyrics as english speakers are able to enjoy.

Born in Indiana and raised in California, by the time Hamilton graduated from high school, he’d already been singing and playing guitar for several years. While in college, he supported himself by hitting the nightclub, bar and music festival circuit, making a name for himself with his idiosyncratic style and committed performances. Although he couldn’t have known it then, he’d soon have his work compared to Van Morrison, Dylan and Springsteen.

He went to Los Angeles for greater exposure and caught the attention of Steely Dan producer Gary Katz, who became the ‘in’ which led to Hamilton releasing four critically acclaimed albums in four years. (Two were released with ABC Records and two with Electra). From Hamilton’s third album, Meet Me at the Crux, the song “How Do You Fight Fire?” and the title track got enough radio airtime to put him on the map and led to him touring America. The rest is history for one to discover one song at a time, and one album after another.

His new CD, The Ghost of Van Gogh, is released on his own label (Acoustic Rock Records), and makes for a concert of intellectually sharp alternative rock. Hamilton’s intense howl blends perfectly with what this talented band puts out. Hamilton on lead vocals, acoustic and rhythm guitar and harmonica, Don Evans on lead guitar, Eric Westphal on Bass and Tim Seifert together make up The Dirk Hamilton Band. Fans of rock and musical sophistication will be happy to have checked out this musician, both his body of work and his live performance.

Dirk Hamilton returns to the Bay Area for a very limited number of shows promoting his latest CD.

ABOUT NIGHTDANCERS:
New York City based composer/flautists Gera Clark and John Sarantos, known collectively as NightDancers, enjoy sharing instrumental flute music with a unique style that takes listeners on a musical journey . . . painting sound pictures with original contemporary Native American flute songs – successfully capturing the soothing, mystical and healing qualities which are the heart and soul of Native American flute music. Clark and Sarantos met while attending a Renaissance of the Native American Flute (RNAF) workshop in 2005, which eventually led to jamming together via speakerphones 1,000 miles apart. NightDancers was formed in 2006. Both Clark and Sarantos also have an extensive background in the business of entertainment. Ms. Clark managed Condon’s, The Lido Cafe and MC’d and operated benefit shows from Tramps in New York City. She has been teaching flute in the tradition of her Native American flute mentors, Franc Menusan, John Rainer Jr. and R. Carlos Nakai. Mr. Sarantos has acted in over 35 commercials, 5 feature films and created, produced and starred in 26 episodes of Mr. Moon’s Magic Circus for CBS-TV. He has facilitated contemporary Native American flute workshops from coast to coast for over 13 years. For 10 summers he has worked with Ken Light and R. Carlos Nakai at the Renaissance of the Native American Flute workshop in Montana and has also written six songbooks for the native flute.

ABOUT KENNY’S CASTAWAYS:
Opening in 1967, Kenny’s Castaways immediately became the venue of choice among up and coming acts. It all started when a little known band called the New York Dolls began to play at Kenny’s and it was during one of their shows that Joey and DeeDee Ramone met. One of the most memorable moments came when Bruce Springsteen took the stage for a one week run in 1973-his NYC debut with the East Street Band.

Kenny’s became the place to play presenting acts such as Deborah Harry, Aerosmith, The Marshall Tucker Band, the poetic styling of Patti Smith, The Roches, Steve Forbert, Willie Nile, Spin Doctors, and Blues Traveler. In 1980, The Smithereens were the house band, and Phish played their first ever New York City show at Kenny’s in 1988.

In 2007, Kenny’s Castaways celebrates 40 years of great music. Kenny’s Castaways has the edge in musical ancestry and remains a major force for talented newcomers. Kenny’s Castaways is located in a spacious New Orleans style showboat in the heart of historic Greenwich Village in a building dating from the early 1800’s. Kenny’s Castaways is the place to showcase the finest up and coming musicians and bands in the country.

Fear Called Living is a Trip Hop group formed in The Bronx, New York. Their musical style is a very distinctive mixture of electronica, hip hop and new wave, with a strong vocal element and raw storytelling lyrics.

The band was formed in 2005 by keyboardist/producer Menyu and singer/songwriter Desiree L’amour, who then recruited producer/multi-instrumentalist J. Kingz. L’amour and Kingz had previously fronted two rock bands before beginning Fear Called Living. Kingz decided to continue exploring styles that influenced his youth and convey a dark, gritty, down-tempo sound. Menyu’s compositions are melodic, deep and affecting, as they shade an array of color that eloquently flows without boundary. L’amour’s storytelling lyrics are philosophical and often stir shrewd, thought-provoking visual images. The combination of elements form a whole, richer, more distinctly somber sound than found in most mainstream music today.

The multi-talented Kingz and Menyu produce music and art for other performing artists, as well as Fear Called Living. The band’s debut album, “Other days” was released on May 22nd 2007.

“ Slightly electronic, ‘Downstream’ is a poppy combination of Wilco and the semi-obscure Brit band Talk Talk, while ‘Calibrated’ brews the indie-emo sensibility of Failure with synth hooks once perfected decades ago by The Cars.”

The brief and exciting history of Sodacon

There’s heavy rock, alternative, grunge, metal, and a myriad of other genres forming the pop rock scene, and now there’s Soda rock. Jesse David put together a collection of songs in 2005 and produced Sodacon “Getchar;” which combined heavy rhythms, intense dynamics, without the trendy use of screamo.

In 2006, Jesse went on a road trip to spend some quality time away from work and try to write some new material that would be catchy and inspiring for potential fans of this new style. Unfortunately, he did not succeed at that. However a result of his Pacific Northwest adventure was a few decent songs and an idea for the next Sodacon release called Trifecta. This was fitting because John Chatelain joined the effort in August and added some beefy undertone at bass with tremendous talent at vocals. Mike Barney came along in September and added his youthful vibe to the project with a fiery energy on drums.

Within a few weeks, they completed 20 songs and went on to record the Trifecta cd over the next four months. They also recorded “Acoustica” featuring 10 acoustic tracks with a heavy strum sound, utilizing John’s cello sounding stick bass.

It was a learning process for all involved. A few shows at Starbucks, Urban Lounge, and Liquid Joes, as well as some cd sales in the bank solidified Sodacon as a premiere group on the scene. At the same time Jess felt vindicated to find talented members that made the project click.

New “Little Scenesters”, stepping out on to the stage, yet ready to put on a great show, whether in a club, arena, or a coffee shop. Two sets, acoustic and electric, this is Sodacon.

Tracks can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/sodacon

Hello friends and confidants,

Come get in out of the cold with The Jones Street Boys Saturday 3/10, as we join our friends The Basement Band to serve up a double dose of hot countrified fun. If you’ve never heard The Basement Band before you’re in for a treat: tight vocal harmonies, intelligent songwriting, and apparently they’ve brought in a new wringer on pedal steel. Delicious!

We’ll be taking the stage at Mo Pitkins’, a very cool venue in Alphabet City, NYC. Whenever we’ve played there we always have a blast (except poor JB who is secretly dreading this gig – he’s had something in his life go uncomfortably wrong each time we’ve performed there). I keep telling him I’ve read his astrological charts and consulted the Ouija board and they all claim Saturday night is the perfect night for music making. Trouble is, I don’t think he’s buying it. He’s going to need to see your foxy faces and hear your loud applause to convince him there is no black cat waiting in the wings…

Very Superstitious,
The Boys in the Band

Specs:

Saturday, 3/10/07 Cover: $8
