The Downliners Sect are set to play at Madam JoJo's in Soho, London on Wednesday 20th August, 2008.
A God Don't Like It Special: headlined by legendary Sixties R&B band The Downliners Sect with support from Speak and the Spells + The Vinyl Stitches.
The Downliners Sect formed in 1963, the golden era of British rhythm and blues. Stylistically close to the Yardbirds, the Stones and the Pretty Things, The Downliners Sect played regularly at all the important venues (100 Club, Eel Pie Island, Crawdaddy Club) channelling Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and a host of other R&B greats.
Between 1964 and 1966 they brought out nine singles, two EPs and three albums, all with a strong R&B and soul flavour. The band split in the late Sixties, reformed in the early Seventies and have been playing and recording ever since. In the Nineties they collaborated with Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats (named after the Downliners' deerstalker hats), and released two albums under the name Thee Heatcoats Sect.
Now accorded cult hero status, this year they have headlined the Crypt Stage at the Ealing Blues Festival & Italy's Festival Beat.
Still creating pure Thames Delta garage R&B, their sound is as raw and wild as ever.
