After releasing two full-length albums and touring the US and UK with numerous national and international artists, the band decided it was time to take some time off to work on new material this past winter, material that is now being showcased on The Comedian.
Featuring everything from hushed dynamics to hard-driving rhythms with singer/guitarist Chris Keene's vocals that resonate like a pleading holler keeping everything together, Mean Creek is a band that uses both current touchstones and their throwback tendencies to create music that is familiar yet fresh.
Voted "Best Band In Boston" by the readers of The Boston Phoenix in their 2010 Best Music Poll and deemed a "melodic tour de force" by The Boston Herald, Mean Creek has been turning heads on the local and national level recently with their sound that SPIN Magazine has described as "a sharp blend of country-core."
Over the band's past two releases, Mean Creek has experienced a great deal of growing that is clearly evident through the output being featured on the band's new 7-inch.
"The band has gone through a lot this past year, and I have personally gone through a lot," singer/guitarist Chris Keene says of his band's emotional state. "These songs are very personal to the four of us. They're about love, loss, and our own confusion on where we fit in the world. We wanted to share that feeling with an audience and relate to them on that level, and in turn, maybe we can all find a place to heal our own personal wounds together."
Mean Creek demonstrates that they have truly come into their own as a band on The Comedian. These songs feel fully realized - they're no longer four separate people playing music together but a fully functional unit all working together as one. With John Agnello at the helm, the sound the band has achieved is a product of their desire to capture their live energy in the studio.
"Our new songs have a totally different vibe than our last album," Keene mentions. "They have a different kind of anger and fury to them, and we wanted a live-sounding recording to capture that feeling on record. John [Agnello] was really good at getting great live performances out of us, capturing how we sound on stage but also getting it to sound great on recording."
Mean Creek will be performing a few upcoming shows this summer in July and August. Additional information and Fall tour dates to be announced shortly.
