David J Roch releases 'Skin + Bones' 4th April on Dram Records
A remarkable new singer/songwriter from Sheffield possessing an almost supernatural vocal range, David J Roch releases his debut album Skin and Bones through Dram Records on the 4th April, 2011.
Produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Grinderman and Nick Cave + The Bad Seeds), David J Roch's debut album offers a collection of darkly romantic compositions of epic sweep. Whether set against a backdrop of lush orchestration, stark electronic ambience or thrumming crescendos, Roch's voice compels and mesmerizes as it leaps from sonorous baritone to soaring falsetto.
David's stirring vocal style resonates with echoes of both Tim and Jeff Buckley or Nick Drake, also bringing to mind singers well outside the folk milieu such as Matt Berninger (The National) or Antony Hegarty. But it is jazz chanteuses Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday that David cites as his personal inspirations, while lyrically he feels a kinship with poets as timeless as William Blake or as contemporary as Simon Armitage.
Listen to The Lost Child:
A brand new label Dram has been set up by music industry leading light Ian Ramage specifically to release David's album. "The prospect of bringing David J Roch's music to a much wider audience fired me up to start my own label," asserts Ramage. "And as Dram's first signing, David is the entire focus of our roster".
A far cry from the cynical label stereotype, Dram "will be a label that's all about working with artists I truly admire and respect - extraordinary artists like David J Roch - and spreading the gospel far and wide."
David J Roch performs songs from Skin and Bones at the Bull and Gate on January 25th; and on February 6th, David will be appear Upstairs at The Garage as part of the HMV Next Big Thing series.
