Inspired by the Greek myth of Cadmus, Kelli Scarr's new video for "Dangling Teeth" was shot over 2 days on a 25,000-acre artist colony and cattle ranch deep in Wyoming.
"Dangling Teeth" is the title track of her new album out now on Silence Breaks. Scarr is currently on tour supporting the record (dates below).
Shot by director Christopher O'Leary (whom Scarr met when both were artists in residence at Wyoming's Ucross Foundation), the video takes its cues from the myth of Cadamus, a Greek prince who replaces his army by sowing dragon's teeth.
"Though the word never appears in the lyrics of the song, I was inspired by the word 'teeth' in the title and discovered the myth of Cadmus," explains O'Leary. "Though the video diverges from the original story, the aim was to retain the connections to the themes of loss, regret, and catharsis present in the song."
"The song represents viewing a situation from an open plain and taking a chance by moving forward," continues Scarr. "I fell in love with Chris' idea to weave the myth into the narrative as it made me understand the song in a way I never would have found on my own."
Kelli Scarr - Dangling Teeth video:
'Dangling Teeth', the sophomore album from Kelli Scarr out now, is rooted in the traditions of American folk, shot through with wanderlust and campfire warmth.
The album sees the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter (an Emmy winning composer and former vocalist for Moby) coming into her own.
Recorded live in Woodstock, NY and mixed to tape by Adam Lasus (Yo La Tengo, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) and Joe Rogers (The Shivers, Noah And The MegaFauna), Dangling Teeth features Scott Metzger on guitar, Andrew Southern on bass, Taylor Floreth on drums, Jo Schornikow on piano / organ, string arrangements by Daniel Brantigan and the country sway of Jonathan Lam's pedal steel among others.
