Innerpartysystem is four guys who were reared in the bleak small towns that surround Mohnton, Pennsylvania. The weathered houses, rusted factories and sprawling farms make this the landscape of true America. These environments are stark and mechanical, and they are pregnant with dark and anxious hope - sentiments that Patrick Nissley, innerpartysystem’s main songwriter, carries in his writing. Innerpartysystem have a distinctive vision, as their songs incorporate throbbing electronic beats that nod towards Autechre, Chemical Brothers and Squarepusher but they are equally a rock band whom, like Nine Inch Nails, Pendulum and Prodigy, aren’t afraid to mix styles and mess with the formula.

Their first visit to the UK in April for the Camden Crawl immediately caught the attention of music heads and clued-up media leaders in the capital with the likes of Zane, Daniel P Carter, XFM, Scuzz and Kerrang! all lending their support. The superb Penta directed video, is currently the #1 requested video on Scuzz UK, and was also featured in the US on Myspace Music. Check it out on You Tube.

Pennsylvanian quartet Innerpartysystem are proud to be the first band ever to have their debut UK single pressed onto a seven-inch single made entirely from dark chocolate and limited to only 100 copies.

Featuring their forthcoming single “Don’t Stop”, released June 30th, 2008, if kept cool enough the record does actually play as the grooves are cut into the chocolate, allowing it to play like a normal, if slightly crackly, vinyl single. We kid you not. It might not sound as good as regular vinyl but it sure tastes better and it’s far easier to swallow.

Innerpartysystem are also confirmed to play the highly-anticipated Projekt Revolution show at Milton Keynes Bowl June 29th, 2008. Headlined by Linkin Park, Innerpartysystem join Jay-Z, Pendulum, N.E.R.D, Enter Shikari and The Bravery on a bill that threatens to be one of the gigs of the summer.

Innerpartysystem. Type that name into Google. Go on. We’ll wait.

Not much there, right? A few shout-outs, like “Innerpartysystem deftly toe a thin line between anthemic pop-rock and melodramatic electro-pop” says Spin, something about China’s inner-party factional politics and a few torrent streams. Otherwise, the band seems to exist in an ether.

And that’s the point.

“We don’t want attention on us,” says…well, one of the members of the band, who refuses to go on record - and for good reason. “There’s no one leader, no frontman - this is a collective. We’re not concerned about who we are outside of the music. In a way, the less people know about us, as people, the better. Hey, even on stage, we’re backlit, so we just show up as silhouettes.”

After being forced to change their name from The Takeover, the group started playing around with monikers that came closer to describing both its sound and philosophy. Innerpartysystem, the winning title, was adapted from the George Orwell book “1984″ (in that dystopian novel, the Inner Party was one of three classes of people in Oceania; the Party is the highest end of the hierarchy and controls the government, and by extent, the media).

Explains IPS: “As a band, we were fascinated by that concept. It ties into the world of today, the hierarchy of celebrities that people worship.” That anti-celeb swipe is most prominent in the searing “Don’t Stop,” which features Nissley railing against the TMZ-inspired world of fake celebrity. (”I feed the rich and fu*@ the poor,” the frontman chastises over a harsh electro-punk beat.)

For the new record, the band recruited a number of A-level producers and mixers, including Joel Hamilton (Book of Knots, Sparklehorse, Blue Tip), Mark Needham (The Killers, Pete Yorn), Spike Stent (Bjork, Arcade Fire), and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Jesus & Mary Chain, the Killers), all of whom brought new ideas on sound and instrumentation to the group.

As the band preps its first video for “Don’t Stop,” they also plan to spend most of the spring and summer touring, including several stops at SXSW. And, for the group it’s where the true nature of the band can be found.

Says Innerpartysystem: “We’re keeping it DIY, doing shows wherever and whenever we can. When you see us, there’s a real aggressive vibe in some ways to what we do, and then there’s also this party atmosphere. It’s that old 10 pm to 6 am kind of vibe. The lights never stop. It’s a huge party…and it takes the spotlight off of us, and puts it on the music, where it belongs.”

Innerpartysystem is one of the newest signings to NYC label Stolen Transmission (The Oohlas, The Horrors, The Photo Atlas, etc).

Stolen Transmission is re-releasing the band’s debut entitled The Download EP, which features two additional previously unreleased tracks, “Don’t Stop” and “Lovers Dancing Remix”.

Innerpartysystem has been quickly gaining notoriety, a fact that is evident through the presence of “Heart of Fire” on the MTV VMA’s playlist, and the band has also licensed its music for 2 EA video games. The song “Don’t Stop” will appear in FIFA, and “Heart of Fire” in Burnout.

Nissley captures this blue collar and proletariat aggression of small town America, no doubt a product of his past singing in hardcore punk bands, but he synthesizes this with influences from electronica music. Other band members Kris Barman (keyboards, guitar, programming), Jared Piccone (drums, beats, programming) and Jesse Cronan (keyboards, programming) follow cue and add textures, electronics, keyboard lines and traditional rock instrumentation to each song. It’s this intermingling of styles and instruments that gives Innerpartysystem a distinctive vision, as its songs incorporate throbbing electronic beats that nod towards Autechre or Squarepusher but also the melodic aggression that’s not far from what you’d find in Nine Inch Nails or Nirvana.

However, don’t be mislead. Despite Innerpartysystem’s darker leanings its vision is coiled in music to which you can dance. Let that be rephrased, it does not create music to which you can dance, but to which you must dance. This is what makes Innerpartysystem special. There is a depth to the dance beat. There is a lingering emotion in the lyrics. There is an undeniable energy that will make you move.
