The Colt.45s

There are songs that excite you when you hear them for the first time, songs that make you glad to be alive, songs that change the way you think of music, songs that make the hair rise on the back of you neck, songs that you’ll always remember where you where when you first heard them. Songs such as ‘Violence Grows’ by The Fatal Microbes, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division, ‘This Charming Man’ byThe Smiths , ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana and ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have Fallen In Love With)’ by The Buzzcocks have all had that effect on The Devil over the years. This year ‘Dear Flies Love Spider’ by The Low Lows and ‘Boom Bang’ by The Bohays have both had that same effect. Well you can add another song and band to that select list, ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ by Durhams Colt.45s, a perfectly timed incendiary device primed to explode in your brain the minute you hear it. This is a track that deserves a blog of it’s own, bleakly beautiful and atmospheric it manages to sound like Siouxsie and the Banshees covering The Passions ‘I’m In Love With A German Filmstar’ in the style of Gary Numan.

Leeanne, Andy, Keith and Anne-Marie, who make up The Colt.45s, claim to be a happy family but this is at odds with their sparse fuzzed up electro punk, an unsettling merger of the minimalistic electro of Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal , the wit of The Smiths and the DIY punk and infectious hostility of Help She Can’t Swim. Their music sounds at least two steps removed from the current music scene which is reason enough to cherish the Colt.45s.
