Canada’s answer to ZZ Top has arrived. They are a raw and energy fill trio called Bluessmyth. This killer blues rockin’ trio is the Yaholkoski brothers, Chris and Jason, and Calvin Becker. Chris leads the way with his beefy lead guitar chops, a deep voice (that sounds like Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top) that snarls. Jason sings backup vocals and thumps away on bass laying down a bottom end for the other half of the rhythm section, Becker, who also plays drums, keyboards, and provides backing vocals. The band likes to call it blues metal and I can relate to that in some ways but when it’s all said and done its blues-rock.

Rocking blues comes out sounding its very best this way and it’s all because there are no complications with the song structures, they crank it out with passion and fire to make it feel real. On the lyrical side, it gets a little heavy and complex with the three-part track “The Story of Emmett Till,” which is true story about a young man, brutally murdered because he was black. The music is naturally highly charged and emotional and brings to light the sadness and harsh realities of racism.

The cover depicts a powerful man (the character’s name is Henry) shaping and molding his weapon, which falls right in line with the way this band plays and develops each of the tracks on this CD. They do it with a lot of muscle and sweat and make it into something that works both musically and lyrically, which is what it’s all about when you record an album. I see where this CD would have equal appeal with rock and blues fans. Yes, very potent stuff here-you have to hear it to feel it, believe it, and come to know it as if you were part of the story. It worked well for me and I really had a good time rockin’ out and feeling the blues with this recording.

You Are What You Look Like On MySpace

by Anne Freeman,

MusicDish Network Sponsor

Yes, I have a MySpace page. And one activity I enjoy immensely is roaming MySpace in search of good indie music. But with so many options, how do I choose whose music site to visit? I check three things:

1. Photo/graphic
2. Band Name
3. Photo/graphic

Make no mistake about it, the first thing I do when confronted with a list of potential bands is look at their photo or graphic. The second thing I do is look at their name. The third thing I do is look at their photo/graphic one last time prior to clicking. That’s it, period.

What does or should that say to indie labels and band/artists? Be very careful about your photo/graphic selections and, if you’re just starting out, pay attention to the name you choose if you have a band. You must catch a potential fan or music industry professional in a few seconds, unless the myspace scanner is a preteen or teenager with gobs of time to spend roaming.

So what should you do? What kind of photograph or graphic should you use on MySpace, or any other similar social networking site? Use one that best communicates your primary artistic sensibility. Let me give you a few examples of bands and artists who have communicated their primary artistic sensibility in just a photograph and/or their band name as examples:

This is the photo that led me to the band The Pink Spiders. It actually is the photo for band member Matt Frixtion (vox/guitar), but his site led me to The Pink Spider’s band site.

I absolutely love this photo! It is eye-catching, the colors are terrific, the pose is perfect, and it oozes mock coolness with a casual playfulness. I had to find out who this guy was. I figured that he had to be a musician from the photo, and that his music was most likely going to be fun. His picture works, as do all the other photos, graphics and the text on The Pink Spiders’s site: they got me to their site!

When I arrived at www.myspace.com/thepinkspiders, I was greeted by an alter of Pop Glory in all of its Pinkness! Their look is a perfect match for their pop/punkish music. Everything on the site contributes to their look and sound. Yes, they are signed to Geffen Records, but you don’t have to be signed with a major label be as effective as The Pink Spiders with your MySpace site. You just have to intend to be as effective by making smart choices and sticking to a theme that is based upon your primary artistic sensibility when designing your site.

The next example is a graphic that caught my eye for the band Creech Holler. My decision-making process that let to a visit to Chreech Holler’s site followed the formula exactly as I described it above: I saw the graphic and was intrigued – read the band name, which confirmed the intrigue – and took one last look at the graphic, then click! I was on their site, exploring. Why did I visit their site?

Their ominous graphic first caught my eye because it recons back to the old snake handlers of the deep South, a small Christian religious cult whose leaders handle rattlers or cotton mouths snakes without being bit I can’t remember which as evidence of their protection by the Holy Spirit.

Just from their image I knew immediately that the band had to be Southern, and I guessed that their music was probably blues-based or Southern folk-based. A quick look to the band name, Creech Holler, well what else could they be? I like that kind of music, so I was prompted to pay them a visit.

Their site did not disappoint me. It was what I’d hoped for full of the ominous, dark mysteries of Southern mythic traditions. The graphics on their site are simply terrific, especially against a grey background. The band’s photos are also appropriately black & white. And, their music is steeped in old, Southern country-folk blues. Creech Holler’s music is actually more traditional folk-based than I anticipated though with plenty of blues groove – which was a nice surprise.

Creech Holler could use a good producer, as their vocals are difficult to hear. But I really enjoyed their musical style and artistic sensibilities. They’ve effectively married their music with their look and style. Good job! www.myspace.com/creechholler

My next example, above, is the band Rodeo Clown (www.myspace.com/rodeoclown2005). Their photo was so dorky that it made me laugh, and it looked like they were laughing when the photo was taken, too.

When someone demonstrates that kind self-deprecating humor, I am immediately interested in who they are. Their photo worked for me although it may not for everyone. (I happen to be a person for whom “dorky” works.) As there was actually no direct connection from their photo to their name, my visit to their site was completely based upon their photo. The fact that their name and photo didn’t jive was a weakness on their part, because someone else may not be so generous with their time as to visit a band’s site simply on the photograph.

When I clicked on Rodeo Clown’s photo, I landed on the site of a self-described punk/rock/surf band whose site is mostly in Italian. It is a modest site, but they did the trick of getting me there. Their music is fun, but I didn’t get a strong sense of musical or artistic direction with Rodeo Clown. It was a fun visit, but they would benefit greatly by making some decisions about who they are and how they want to present themselves. In other words, I didn’t get a sense of their primary artistic sensibility. And that would be a killer for many bands if a music industry professional were to visit their site.

Probably the bigger challenge on a site like MySpace is for the individual artist who is trying to stand out, and this is especially for artists in acoustic-based music. Individual artists have a much more difficult time of it when trying to establish a presence. Carie Pegeon is an example of an acoustic-based artist whose photograph worked very well.

Carie Pigeon‘s photograph is an excellent example of creating an eye-catching image. It is a terrific shot. I saw indie, strong female, probably acoustic-singer/songwriter with a harder, confessional edge. Her photo is well composed and interesting to look at, and it convinced me to take a visit to her site.

Carrie’s website states that her influences are Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlin, and Alanis Morissette. You can definitely hear those influences, and they are a good match for her look. Carrie’s photo nails who this artist is perfectly. And, her music is very much reflects that genre. While Carie needs to do more work to her MySpace site so that her personality shines through as beautifully as it does through her photo, she accomplished the most important first step: she got me there.

It is important to note that my reactions are not everyone elses’ reactions when confronted with the many choices on social networking sites. But what is also important to note is that we all must base our decisions whether or not to visit a site on the same two pieces of information: your graphic and your band name. What artists, managers and record labels must think through carefully is how you use those two portals to an artist’s site, whether the browser is a fan or a music industry professional.

Who do you want to attract to your site? What are you doing to get them there? How does your photo or graphic and name contribute to motivating someone to visit your site? You must be very clear about your primary artistic sensibility to ensure that every decision you make for your site contributes to your cause. If each choice is not actively contributing to your site, then it’s actively detracting from you as an artist. There is no neutral ground in this game.

Finally, congrats to all of the above artists for getting me to their sites. Now take another look and listen at The PinkSpiders myspace site and learn the lessons that they can teach you. Good luck!

MusicDish Network Promotes 60’s Love Child Astrella-Celeste

MusicDish, an Internet music magazine publisher and artist marketing/development firm, is proud to announce the addition of Pop/Jazz singer Astrella Celeste to the MusicDish Network roster. Combining a variety of online viral marketing strategies, the MusicDish Network will be coordinating a broad campaign in support of her new EP ‘Blue Star’ (the Spanish translation of Astrella Celeste).

The ultimate 60’s love child, Astrella-Celeste is the daughter of the ‘British Bob Dylan’ Donovan, who wrote “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Having recorded with her father and opened for him on his Beat Café tour, Astrella-Celeste is now entering the spotlight in her own right. On September 25th, she will be releasing her single ‘Dream’ to coincide with her debut EP “Blue Star” issued in the UK, Ireland & Cyberspace on Donovan’s new label, Donovan Discs. Astrella-Celeste wrote the album with Kevin Hunter of Sheryl Crow fame.

“Astrella Celeste’s ‘Dream’ Combines a fusion of jazz, pop and country wearing such female icons as Liz Phair, Shania Twain and Natalie Merchant on her sleeves,” noted June Caldwell with Bryan Farrish Radio Promotion.

The MusicDish Network will conduct an extensive saturated marketing campaign, combining PR/brand development, syndicated marketing and online street teaming. In addition, she will be aggressively pushed on social networking sites such as MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/astrellaceleste), Live Digital and TagWorld, while promoting her single and video “Dream” through a viral distribution campaign on major file sharing networks such as eDonkey.

Having performed on stage since childhood (releasing a single in Italy at age 8 which led to the Pope asking to meet her), Astrella spent her youth in acting schools and dance troupes before working with her father providing backing vocals and touring with him. Her career has since been richly developed by working with other musicians in recording sessions, performances and/or home jams, amongst them David Gillmore, Brian Setzer, Donovan, Mark White, Happy Mondays, and Graham Nash to name but a few.

What the press is saying about Astrella-Celeste:

“Astrella has the most beautiful lyrics and voice, so sensitive, so personal, her song ‘Dreams’ is like a deep and magical mystery tour inside her heart, and the way she sings ‘you’ in the song ‘I Need You,’ you’ll swear she’s singing just to you. The music is so relaxing, like Jimmy Buffet meets Carol King on a beautiful island, and the mood can be summed up well in the line ‘Take it easy, what’s your hurry, I can see no need to worry.'”
– Rock City News

“Astrella is an expressive vocalist who pens insightful, visual lyrics. Celeste’s band and production are crisp and clean. Astrella’s music orbits around the acoustic guitar but has a fuller sound thanks to her band and the use of various instruments including horns. Astrella’s songs have interesting inflections and instrumentation that explore a range of soft moods.”

Halie Loren-Full Circle

I often wonder how such beautiful women, both with voice and physical presence, can sing cut-to-the-bone lyrics, and mean it with every fiber of their being. Even after all these years of listening and writing reviews, it still catches me off guard. My first thought is like “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” That would be shortsighted and unrealistic to look at an individual in such a way, not to mention sexist. That thought came and went as quick as it arrived. Now let’s get down to business here.

Halie Loren is an individual that makes an impact as a poet, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist, and on top of all of that talent, sings like a woman on mission perfectly positioned to carry her story to the world via her music. She does it ALL very well.

With one listen to Full Circle, you will become a believer. It did not take long for me to realize I was listening to a special artist. When the third track “Sand” began, I said to myself, wow, this girl really has what it takes, she is the entire package and then some. The music is a nice mixture of jazz, pop, and rock, and at times, I heard hints of country, like the popular mainstream country that has been so hot for several years now. But these are my ears talking; somebody else may not hear that at all. I can be absolute about one thing, the lyrics are very powerful, and the piano playing lying underneath it all is the foundation from which the tracks come flowing forth like a river out of control with unyielding emotion. The other contributing musicians are stellar as well and without them, Loren would not have the necessary building blocks to put together this musical machine. This album was a genuine team effort with a leader that has impeccable timing and tremendous skills in every area necessary to create a timeless recording.

If you think there is any surface emotion thrown in for fun on this album, think again—its straight to core with force for this lady. A song like “Pretty Truth” is a good example…

You still pretend you like to let me always choose
I still pretend that I don’t get pissed off at you when I lose,
brand new—maybe we should blind each other right now before It all starts showing through-
We are but figments we can never live up to,
But beneath the pretty polish we could always find a prettier truth…

I usually don’t quote songs like this, but I just had to. These lyrics make you ponder a few things. That particular passage could apply to a lot of things—a relationship, politicians, and the government, whatever you find in your life or around it that fits the description—which is the beauty of a song like this. In songs such as the title track, Loren sings about making someone else feel her pain, turning the situation around “Full Circle” and enjoying it. It’s obvious this woman has been through a lot, like many of us, and has no problem wearing her heart on her sleeve. And that is exactly why I admire her for what she is doing here. The best part about it all, besides the great lyrics, is that it comes at you set to sounds that are just as biting and attention grabbing. This is a great album, and one that needs plenty of recognition and a large audience to enjoy just as I did.

Steve Kopandy- Scripted

Genre: Pop-Rock

Steve Kopandy introduces his rock-pop genius with Scripted, a four song EP. This CD is a superb introduction that everyone should hear. While Kopandy has many influences, actually a long list is on his My Space site, he manages to create some clever pop rock and come out sounding like himself and original. Do not be surprised if you find yourself saying-“This guy sounds like someone I have heard before” but not be able to put your finger on it.

This happens to me frequently while listening to new music, particularly indie artists that have a ton of influences like Kopandy. This is a credit to his abilities as a singer/songwriter/musician. Being a triple threat is very common but what I find most uncommon is someone with those abilities that can actually impress me, a song crafter that creates a tune that lingers in my mind and soul long after I have heard it. Bravo Steve! You have that distinctive ability.

While I only heard 4 songs, which was a disappoint because I wanted more, I found myself convinced that this man has what it takes to make his way to the top of the pops if someone would give him the opportunity to walk through that elusive door. Scripted is a platform for an artist on the rise to give you a taste of what is to come. The one song that really grabbed me the most was the closer “My Sisters Wedding Song.” It is a shimmering pop diamond with passages like-“There must be a million fish in the sea but you are the only one fore me, there must be a million stars in the sky, which one was made for you and I?” This is a beautiful string of words by a true wordsmith.

I look forward to much more than an introduction the next time around from this promising artist. Down under there is something happening and his name is Steve Kopandy.

Lovebox Weekender Festival, East London

The Lovebox Weekender festival was this past weekend and we were there, experiencing the current sounds of today’s hip and trendy. The main reason we went was to see the Guillemots perform, which we did and they were great as always.

Guillemots at Lovebox Weekender Festival
Guillemots performing at Lovebox Weekender Festival
We were there all day on Sunday and watched bands Lorraine (from Norway), Hoover Manoeuvres, Secret Stealth, Guillemots, Mark Ronson, The Feeling, The Bees, Jimmy Cliff, headliner Jamiroquai and there were a lot more bands and djs performing in tents and on smaller stages around the festival grounds.

One memorable band was Lost Pirates playing on a smaller stage. They were dressed up as – you guessed it – pirates and were funny to watch and a pretty good band to go out and see if you ever get a chance.

One surprise of the day was how good The Feeling were. They mentioned they had just flown back from LA and were jet lagged but their set didn’t show it. I’m not too familiar with them but I like their song ‘Sewn’ which is radio friendly here and I was looking forward to hearing it, which they played, and it sounded great live as did the rest of their songs. Their harmonies were refreshing to hear and they reminded me a little of the Beach Boys and a few other bands mixed in but I’ll leave that to your judgement if you want to take a listen to The Feeling on their Myspace page. I highly recommend them and their tour schedule is as follows:

The Lovebox Weekender Festival was one of the trendiest festivals that I’ve been to. Located on Victoria Park in East London it wasn’t too difficult to find. We took the Oxford Tube (24 hr. bus service from Oxford to London), got off at Notting Hill, then onto the tube, central line from Notting Hill to Stratford and from there changed trains for one stop to Hackney Wick and about a five minute walk to Victoria Park.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day-hot with a few sprinkles of rain and then hot again. For festival goers looking for something different try to get to the Lovebox Weekender next year. If you haven’t been yet it’s one more to add to the list!
