2009 has been quite a year for Morrissey.

He’s toured relentlessly, performing to sold-out audiences around the world. His 9th studio album, Years Of Refusal, saw Morrissey tie his highest US chart debut on the Billboard 200, and he’s overseen upgraded and remastered versions of his ‘90s works Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted.

Crowning what is undoubtedly his most productive year since his solo career began in 1988, SWORDS compiles 18 select songs released as b-sides of his 13 hit singles from his last four albums.

As an artist who has always ensured his b-sides are of as outstanding quality as his singles and album tracks, Swords features some of Morrissey’s finest material. 12 songs are collaborations with guitarist Alain Whyte, the rest co-written with guitarists Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias, and former keyboardist Michael Farrell.

In keeping with the three remarkable studio albums covered in his period - 2004’s You Are The Quarry, 2006’s Ringleader Of The Tormentors and Years Of Refusal - the music is powerful and adventurous. The richness and expression of Morrissey’s voice has never been greater. With unmatchable style, wit and insight, truths beneath the surface are laid bare.

There are moments of personal reflection; “Munich Air Disaster 1958,” for example, is a heartrending lament for the Manchester United players who died in the infamous plane crash, and for those who were left behind.

The live cover version of David Bowie’s 1973 song “Drive-In Saturday” reveals a little more of Morrissey’s own teenage self, with its lyrics of amorous confusion modified to rhapsodize over The New York Dolls rather than the Rolling Stones.

Chrissie Hynde makes a rare appearance, singing backing vocals on “Shame is the Name.”

The album was compiled by Morrissey who is surely in the rudest of creative health. They’re subtly assembled and sequenced - the feeling of approaching extinction in the beautiful “The Never-Played Symphonies” followed by a promise of a reunion in the afterlife on “Sweetie-Pie.” As Morrissey said of the Tour Of Refusal in March, “all of our answers will be in our songs.”

Initial quantities of Swords will come with a bonus disc featuring eight superb live performances recorded in Warsaw in July this year. This will include songs from Morrissey’s last two albums and 1994’s Vauxhall And I, plus The Smiths’ “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby,” first heard on the group’s 1986 b-side collection The World Won’t Listen.

In October and November 2009, Morrissey and his band will also tour the UK and Europe, with new American dates scheduled for later in the year.

SWORDS will be released in the UK on October 26th and November 3rd in the US.

Longtime Moz guitarist and Musical Director Boz Boorer along with guitarist Jesse Tobias, drummer Matt Walker, bassist Solomon Walker, and keyboardist Kristopher Pooley are the band on the eagerly awaited tour, Morrissey's first in the US since 2007.

The band are taking the fierce magnetism of the new album, which debuted at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 in the US and #3 in the UK, across the country. The majority of the dates sold out in record time including his multiple night stint in NYC. Morrissey will also make a return appearance at Coachella on April 17th, having headlined the very first one, for the festival's 10th anniversary.

Morrissey is often recognized as the most important British musician of his generation. The New York Times recently stated, "Morrissey isn't just any singer: he has become one of the defining rock stars of the past few decades by virtue of his grand voice, his grander songs, and his charming habit of playing with melodrama."

His influence is felt worldwide through the countless artists that cite him as their primary inspiration. 'Years of Refusal' is a masterful work that finds Morrissey and the band at their best with a muscular sound and the inimitable voice and lyrics of a legend. The Chicago Sun-Times has declared it "Morrissey at his most warped, wicked, and wonderful." People Magazine has hailed the lead single "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" as "a perfect piece of Moz pop."

"He came across not unlike romantic poet Lord Byron as a rock star" - Raleigh News & Observer

Very few music fans who were around during the mid-eighties were indifferent to The Smiths – you might love them or hate them, like Marmite really, but you were unlikely not to have much of an opinion. This is what drove their success of course - the fans were the kind of fans who would queue for hours, days even, to get tickets for gigs or the latest release.

With that kind of adoration, the fact that there was also a bunch of people going around saying how much they hated them (not simply didn't think much of, or even actively disliked, but hated) only served to intrigue the uninitiated, who would then be all the more likely to buy the latest single/album/gig ticket to see what all the fuss was about, and would then either end up slagging them off at every opportunity or queuing for hours in the rain in Wolverhampton hoping to sneak in to the show.

Not that you could do much to get away from them during their heyday, they were everywhere, Top of the Pops, NME, Smash Hits even. For a few years, the Smiths simply were indie music - not that there was too much competition - never forget this is the era that gave us the Wonderstuff and Neds Atomic Dustbin.

The reason they elicited such polarised opinions was of course their front man, Morrissey, he of the curiously flowered back pocket. The music was new too, no doubt, and influential (Travis and Coldplay are the distant dismal ancestors of their bright sparkly sound) but they were riding the wave the new style, rather than being its originators, and anyway, it wasn't the kind of musical revolution that inspired deep seated passion in and of itself (unlike punk which felt like the end of the world or a new dawn depending on how many Emerson Lake and Palmer records you had). No, when a white-socked casual said they hated the Smiths, what they meant was they hated Morrissey, his attitude, his persona, the whole world-view expressed in his lyrics.

This double CD, 'The Sound Of The Smiths', complete with glossy photo booklet, is a pretty impressive document of the band's activities over those five years from '83-'87, all the singles, most of the B-sides, some live recordings and alternative takes. The obsessive fans will have all this stuff already, the equally passionate haters would rather gnaw off their own genitals than have to sit through nearly two hours of the stuff; I guess the CD is intended to introduce the kids to their back catalogue and a jolly good job it will do of that.

For myself, I can't believe that this stuff is all upwards of twenty years old. Given that it is all such ancient history, the band sounds fantastic. No scrap that, the band sounds fantastic full stop. I remember loving Johnny Marr's guitar then, and I still do now, but I had forgotten (or not noticed) how effective the rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce was. Those three drove the songs along beautifully, and the music they produced was timeless.

Although I owned a few Smiths records, and thanks to my friend Marcus (who was one of those obsessive fans) listened to pretty much all of it at one time or another, I was never able to make that jump into full-scale fandom, and it was Morrissey that got in my way. I was young and impressionable enough to think that I must have been missing something, perhaps I wasn't sensitive or poetic enough, I don't know, but now I am old and ornery I can say with my head held up high that he just wasn't much cop.

There is room for sensitive poetic young men in popular music, of course there is, but a room containing Nick Drake and Morrissey would only contain one sensitive poetic young man and he wouldn't be from Manchester. Sticking flowers down your trousers only makes you sensitive if you develop a rash; I challenge any listener to this CD to find even one line which shows any concern whatsoever for the feelings of others.

Writing couplets such as 'Does the mind rule the body or does the body rule the mind? I don't know' (and just sticking it in a song a propos of nothing) does not make you a poet, it only shows that you like to sound clever and profound and that you have no inclination towards metaphysical speculation. Come to think of it, Francis Rossi is more of a sensitive poetic young man than Morissey ever was. (Compare 'I was looking for a job and then I found a job' and 'I like it I like it I like it I like it I la-la-la-like it, la-la-la-like it'; at least in the latter the repetition imparts a rhythmic urgency to the sentiment rather than making the line fall flat on its face - I'm only half-joking.)

If you knew and loved the Smiths, buy this CD for completeness' sake. If you haven't heard them, buy it and make your own mind up. Me, I'm off to make some toast and see if I still like Marmite.

Rhino UK is pleased to announce a new dual format collection of classic recordings by The Smiths, 'The Sound Of The Smiths', scheduled for release on November 10th, 2008. This brand new compilation was done with the full co-operation of Morrissey and Johnny Marr. Morrissey provided the title and Johnny Marr personally supervised the mastering, their joint invlovement ensuring that this is the most impactful look back at the Smiths' extraordinary career to date.

The Smiths were the definitive British independent band of the eighties, releasing a remarkable series of singles and albums between 1983 and 1987 that was both commercially and critically successful. The Smiths laid down a marker for guitar pop-rock that remains unsurpassed. They were the inspiration for the guitar driven rock that dominated the nineties and for the spiritual revival of today's indie scene.

'The Sound Of The Smiths' will be available as either a single disc or two disc collection. Disc one comprises 23 tracks and presents all the Smiths' memorable single releases, reinstating singles that were scheduled though eventually unreleased in that form ("Still Ill" and "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby") plus European only singles including "Barbarism Begins At Home" and "The Headmaster Ritual".

Watch "This Charming Man" video:

The core of disc one, however, is that matchless run of singles from their first Rough Trade 7 inch "Hand In Glove" to the posthumous "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me". The collection includes genuine classic hits such as "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "How Soon Is Now", "Panic" and "Girlfriend in A Coma" which marked the pinnacle of that unique creative collaboration between vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. Indeed, Morrissey's eloquence and proselytising was always matched by the compelling musicianship of Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce.

The two disc format adds a further 22 tracks including rare b-sides, tracks that were exclusive to 12 inch releases and selected live recordings. Among the rarities are the Troy Tate produced "Pretty Girls Make Graves", "What's The World", a cover of a track from the fellow Manchester band James, recorded live at Barrowlands, Glasgow, originally released only on a cassette single and the live "Meat Is Murder" from the vinyl 12 inch single version of "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore".

Both discs will be available digitally, many of the titles being made available for the very first time as downloads.

The Smiths disbanded in 1987, just weeks before the release of their fourth album, 'Strangeways Here We Come'. Few groups packed so much originality and notoriety into a relatively short life span. The Smiths continue to be one of the most enduring and fascinating groups of the eighties.

It's been a year of amazing moments for Liam Fray and co. Not only did the band get to meet Bono and The Edge of U2 when Liam followed them on to the stage at the Union Chapel for a solo set in aid of MENCAP but the band were in awe at the appearance of Morrissey at a recent London show. A major influence on all the members, Morrissey is now a confirmed fan and the band will play at the O2 Wireless Festival on the same day as the man himself.

Chart Success

When their debut album, 'St. Jude' crashed into the UK Top 5, there was a sense of vindication for the band given that they had spent the last twelve months playing up and down the UK to ever increasing crowds. Pre signing the band had already sold out the Manchester Academy 3, now they find themselves heading towards two very special nights in October at their home town’s world famous Apollo Theatre.

Watch The Courteeners "No You Didn't, No You Don't" video:

The Summer Beckons

Before that October jaunt, the boys will be coming to a field near you with confirmed appearances at Glastonbury, O2 Wireless Festival, Oxegen, T In The Park and V 2008.

"No You Didn't, No You Don't" is released by A & M on June 23rd, 2008

Here's the latest news on Morrissey's cancelled, sold out Roundhouse shows in London - a preliminary statement:

"Morrissey's concerts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday night at The Roundhouse have been postponed due to illness. The iconic artist lost his voice last night 5 songs in to the fourth night of a run of six sold out shows at the legendary venue. He has been ordered by doctors to rest for four days. The sold out UK tour is scheduled to continue in Doncaster on Wednesday night. All ticket holders to the Roundhouse dates should retain their tickets and an announcement will be made this week.

All ticket holders will be contacted directly where possible.

Information regarding rescheduling or refunding will be carried on GigsAndTours.com as soon as available."

Morrissey on Myspace

UPDATE (February 1, 2008):

This just in from promoters SJM:

(Please note: I did not write this and take no responsibility for the exceedingly poor grammar and spelling. I can spell 'Roundhouse'. See, I just did.)

"MORRISSEY ROUNHOUSE SHOWS UNABLE TO BE RESCHEDULED

The organizers regret to announce that it has not been possible to reschedule Morrissey's 3 postponed January shows at the Roundhouse. The original 6 night run was completely sold out and the three shows that did take place were historic.

The Artiste and Promoters tried strenuously to reschedule the three shows but it proved impossible.

We would like to extend our apologies to all of Morrissey's loyal fans over this unavoidable situation

Ticket holders for the abandoned Friday 25th Jan show will be automatically refunded to patrons Credit Debit /Cards

Ticket holders for the cancelled Saturday 26th Jan and Sunday 27th Jan shows should return their unused tickets to point of purchase for a refund.

Season tickets holders will receive a 50% refund of the cost of the six day ticket to reflect the three missing shows.

Once again the Artiste and Promoters would like to apologise all disappointed fans of Morrissey at this outcome."
