Sam Sparro’s protégés the Love Grenades are everywhere: ENTOURAGE, CHUCK, KXLU, Lobster Fest, Sunset Junction, European festivals, Los Angeles and this October, CMJ and New York City.

Three confirmed shows at the CMJ festival will introduce the city that never sleeps to the all night dance rock music of Love Grenades. With more appearances, performances and DJ sets in the process of being set up, Love Grenades plan on taking New York by storm.

“Next to Paris, New York is my favorite city outside my hometown of Los Angeles. To get a chance to play a place that cultivated the sounds of underground No Wave and Punk in the late 70s and early 80s is like a dream come true. Its gonna be hard to drag me back home!” says Elizabeth Wight, front-woman and mastermind of Love Grenades.

Playful, sexy, and eminently danceable, Love Grenades are a new, unifying force in independent music – in its most literal interpretation.

The brainchild of mastermind Elizabeth Wight, Love Grenades is the unlikely beat-driven collision of electro-pop, Italo disco and punk that’s winning over Los Angeles audiences. With a new EP on the scene this fall on Modus Vivendi Music, Love Grenades will steal your heart.

Love Grenades are the hottest $&*! to come out of LA this year. – Rockscope

As scorching as they are seductive – a collective soundtrack for making out one-on-one or maxing out with a hundred sweaty strangers on the dance floor. – LA Weekly

Love Grenades…has been igniting dance parties all throughout the indie music scene with its electro-fused punk hits. – Filter

Producing sleek and sexy dance grooves with indie attitude, she’s on the short list of L.A.’s next big thing. – Metromix Los Angeles

Who can ignore the eclectic sound that’s making hearts throb all over Los Angeles… Love Grenades have won our hearts. – VAMPD Magazine

Make your heart explode with their sultry electronic dance pop numbers. – Amateur Chemist

Girls In Trouble celebrate the release of their self-titled debut at New York’s Joe’s Pub November 2nd and Public Assembly November 11th with friends Franz Nicholay, Pepi Ginsburg and more.

With the High Holy Days behind and Hanukkah around the corner, no time like the present to connect with your Judain sisters and brothers.

On November 2, 2009, Girls in Trouble will join forces with Eli Valley vs the Sway Machinery at Joe’s Pub in the multi-media mash up The Temple of Self Hatred, a music-meets-visual art set.

The night will feature a reading from the winner of the Goldberg Prize for Jewish Fiction by Emerging Writers and other guests and surprises.

You can also catch Girls In Trouble’s performance at their album release party at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly on November 11.

The event will be also be a fundraiser for Julius Caesar Press and will feature additional guests including Franz Nicholay of The Hold Steady and Pepi Ginsburg.

Girls in Trouble is a folk-inspired indie group featuring inviting experimental string arrangements, lead by vocalist/violinist Alicia Jo Rabins.

The record, initially a song cycle for a master’s thesis, features mystical lyrics telling the stories of obscure Biblical women. Rabins finds a way to make the struggles of the ancient woman her own while grounding them with alluring hooks.

Set for release on JDub Records on November 3, 2009, the Girls in Trouble debut was recorded in rural North Carolina with the help of three of her closest friends: Aaron Hartman (Old Time Relijun, K Records) on upright bass, Tim Monaghan on drums and Jascha Hoffman on keys and glockenspiel. Produced by Scott Solter (Spoon, The Mountain Goats, Okkervil River).

Girls in Trouble November 2009 shows:

11/02: New York, NY @ Joe’s Pub
11/11 @ Brooklyn, NY @ Public Assembly

“Using folk and modern Americana Girls In Trouble is a compelling album that gets an extra lift through the smart percussion that sounds a bit like Blur in their hey-day.” – Here Comes The Flood, September 2009

Paul McCartney to release Good Evening New York City November 17

Multi-Disc CD/DVD Special Package Features Dazzling Performances of Beatles, Wings and Solo Classics From Citi Field, Formerly Shea Stadium, Historic Site of The Beatles’ Landmark 1965 Concert

“It was three great nights for the band and for me personally it was very exciting to be back opening a new stadium on the site of the old Shea Stadium where we had played 44 years previously. Even more exciting because this time round you could hear us!”

Paul McCartney’s historic three-night musical christening of New York’s Citi Field, witnessed by 120,000-plus attendees and universally hailed as a concert experience for the ages, will be immortalized November 17, 2009 when Hear Music/Concord Music Group releases Good Evening New York City.

This momentous musical experience will be available in two formats: a 3-disc (2 CD + 1 DVD) standard edition and a 4-disc (2 CD + 2 DVD) deluxe version featuring expanded packaging and a bonus DVD including McCartney’s traffic-stopping, headline-making July 15 performance on the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee (including bonus numbers not aired on the Late Show with David Letterman broadcast). The set will also be made available in high quality vinyl.

In any configuration, the 30+ songs and nearly 3 hours of music comprising Good Evening New York City are a must-have for attendees wishing to relive the July 17, 18 & 21 shows, those who couldn’t get tickets and/or anyone interested in an audiovisual document of a living legend. Good Evening New York City marks McCartney’s 2nd release for Hear Music. The first was 2007’s highly acclaimed Memory Almost Full.

The standard version of Good Evening New York City will be available at participating Starbucks company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada and wherever music is sold.

As the inaugural musical event at Citi Field, the site of the former Shea Stadium, the July 2009 shows held special significance not only for McCartney but for generations of his fans. The shows were performed on the same hallowed ground that The Beatles, in 1965, played the 34-minute show that would set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show–and where in 2008 McCartney joined Billy Joel for the final rock show before the original stadium’s demolition.

As documented on Good Evening New York City, “I’m Down” from the 1965 set list was revived for the Citi Field shows, albeit this time played through a PA that was not overpowered by screaming fans (though there were still several thousand who tried).

Other highlights of Good Evening New York City include faithful takes on Beatles classics “Drive My Car,” “Got To Get You Into My Life,” “The Long And Winding Road,” “Blackbird,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Back In The USSR,” “Paperback Writer,” “Let It Be,” “Hey Jude,” “Helter Skelter” and more, plus “Something” rendered on ukulele gifted to Paul by George Harrison, and a tribute to John Lennon in the form of a medley of “A Day In The Life” and “Give Peace A Chance.” Wings era chestnuts include “Band On The Run,” “My Love,” “Let Me Roll It” and the pyrotechnic tour de force of “Live And Let Die,” while timeless McCartney solo material ranges from “Here Today” to the upbeat “Flaming Pie” and “Dance Tonight” to a pair of numbers from Electric Arguments, the 2008 album released under the alias of The Fireman.

The concert footage featured on Good Evening New York City standard edition features concert footage directed by Paul Becher, who has overseen live visuals for McCartney for some 200 performances and counting. The 33-song 2 hour 40 minute performances were shot in High Definition using 15 cameras and digital footage incorporated from 75 Flipcams handed out to fans over the course of the three night stand. The audio mix, in both stereo and 5.1, was handled by longtime McCartney engineer Paul Hicks, whose credits include the recent Beatles remasters, The Beatles Anthology, Let It Be… Naked and two Grammy awards for his mixing work on the Beatles’ Love album.

The deluxe edition bonus DVD will feature footage of McCartney’s July 15 performance on the outdoor marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater, previously available only as a webcast on the Late Show with David Letterman website. The marquee set, which marked McCartney’s return to the site of The Beatles U.S. television debut, generated front page headlines and literally stopped traffic as word of mouth generated a crowd that packed Broadway from Columbus Circle to Times Square.

Paul McCartney’s July 17-21 Citi Field stand has already been unanimously hailed by critics and audiences alike as the concert experience of a lifetime. On November 17, Good Evening New York City will document it for the ages.

Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky) is a renaissance man with his base of interest rooted firmly in the world of creativity through sound. Now, he returns to his original form as DJ and master provocateur with his new album ‘The Secret Song.’

In his role as recording artist and producer, Miller has worked with or remixed everyone from Metallica to Yoko Ono; from the Kronos Quartet to Killah Priest to Beck, showing his many facets as a creative force in the world of music.

‘The Secret Song’ is DJ Spooky’s take on the changing world of 21st century music, economics, and global culture. With material taken from collaborations with people as diverse as Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, old school African hip-hop legends Zimbabwe Legit and Mike Ladd to political hip-hop crew The Coup, golden-age legends The Jungle Brothers, and Iran’s Sussan Deyhim (who sings in Farsi), DJ Spooky connects the dots between jazz, classical music, and the struggle to create new, dynamic relationships between old school hip-hop and the 21st century’s rapidly changing info-culture landscape.

Showcasing his filmmaking, the release is accompanied by a limited edition DVD. Following in the steps of The Cinematic Orchestra’s rescore of Dziga Vertov’s cinema classic “Man with A Camera,” DJ Spooky remixed and rescored Vertov’s rare first collage film “Kino-Glaz” (“Cinema-Eye”).

Chilly Gonzales challenges Andrew WK To Piano Battle on September 25th at Legendary New York Venue, Joe’s Pub

Iconic rocker Andrew W.K. has accepted the challenge – from Guinness World Record holding, Grammy nominated – Chilly Gonzales to a piano battle next week in New York City’s iconic music venue Joe’s Pub.

Classically trained pianist Gonzales who recently broke a world record for the longest solo-artist performance was made aware of an interview taking place between pop culture website The Quietus and Andrew W.K. who was in the UK to promote his new album ‘55 Cadillac’, and decided he would challenge the iconic white clad-rocker to a piano duel.

The Quietus had this to say:

‘Friend of the site and veritable polymath Akira The Don explains:

“This past Monday [September 14th] I was to head down to King’s College to have one of my world famous filmed-sit-downs with Mr Andrew WK. When Chilly Gonzales got wind of this he recorded a masterful video message, challenging Andrew – a fellow solo-piano elpeeist – to a Mighty Duel in New York next week, and sent it to me. That afternoon, I played Andrew the message, and… well, you can see for yourselves.”

The Quietus is overjoyed to confirm that Andrew has accepted Gonzales’ challenge which will take part in Joe’s Pub, NYC, September 25, 2009. Watch this space for more details.’

Check out the video at The Quietus

From the footage at the Kings College show, Andrew is in top form. This piano battle on September 25th is definitely one not to be missed.

Opening acts for the show will be Rain Phoenix’s Papercranes supporting her new album.

Luke Rathborne will be playing the final day of his month-long residency in New York City at The Living Room – Tuesday, August 25, 2009 with a special show featuring a diverse band at 11PM.

“NEW DISCOVERY” Artist – INTERVIEW MAGAZINE – 2009

“..Like Bob Dylan, Lou Reed or Will Oldham, why should you expect anything else but constant haunting, and engaging development.” – TheFanzine.com

“strange… melancholic.. Rathborne has assembled a diverse septet of players for this show” – Village Voice

Featured in this month’s FILTER Mag – “A young man of 21, Luke Rathborne has already defied odds to self-release a record and fund a move from the deep woods of Brunswick, Maine to the couch-surfing lifestyle of New York City. Now on his feet in a Brooklyn loft, Rathborne is finishing up a second album, building on the stripped down sounds of his first release, After Dark, and working in orchestral touches to enhance his arrangements of composition” – Filter Magazine

“With melancholy on par with Elliott Smith and melodies that recall John Lennon, Luke Rathborne cements his place in the “one to watch” division. Tonight’s show, dubbed “In Search of the Miraculous,” is organized around NYC-based artists offering a taste of things to come..
A Fish Hook An Open Eye (Kepler Records, Sept. 22, 2009)

Joining Boss Hogg September 10th to Celebrate the OPENING of The NEW Knitting Factory Brooklyn

Sometimes you see an artist that just hits you smack dab in the middle of your heart. Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers are an incredible blend of grinding blues, sleazy jazz, and disturbing rock tied together with pop and punk sensibilities; the result sounding something like a vulgar Ella Fitzgerald, channeling Nick Cave and PJ Harvey crooning in front of a wall of distortion and thunderous, pounding rhythms.

Download FREE MP3: “Beating St. Louis”

The band reads like a who’s who of recent NYC rock luminaries including members of Creaky Boards, Soft Black, Kapow!, and cult rock producers The Negatones. Their live shows are already a notorious commodity which regularly feature audiences that scream as loud as the band does through their instruments and voices.

Their debut album, ‘A Fish Hook An Open Eye’ captures the band’s raw and unique sound in 8 solid tracks, demonstrating depth, ability, and emotional scope, eclipsing anything from Shilpa’s already lauded past. But Shilpa is not looking back: ‘A Fish Hook An Open Eye’ is released and then Shilpa and her band will viciously tour throughout 2009, including opening for Boss Hogg on September 10, 2009 at the new Knitting Factory Brooklyn.

Shilpa talks about the making of her album:

This album was recorded and mixed in 8 days. We recorded it in August of last year at Melody Lanes Studios. The whole point was to break the curse of never being able to finish anything. I have been pretty unsuccessful with finishing things all my life. I had just left the first band I founded, Beat the Devil, and was starting all over again, a continuous pattern for me, like Sisyphus and his rock. This record is haphazard, full of flaws and changes genre every song, but it’s also honest, raw, and urgent. In some twisted way it describes a break up, and how pointless it is to predict how your life is going to turn out, so I guess it’s also about recovery after failure. – Shilpa Ray

Beating St Louis
This one’s about the three way drunken fist fight I got into with my former band mates when we were touring the country.

I Only Have Eyes For You… is a cover.
I wanted to play this song like I’m forced to look at a person with love and the great deal of hate I felt for myself for being in love.

Filthy and Free
I wrote this to escape someone else’s sense of control. I wanted to be free of the rules, expectations and criticisms people put on you to keep you down and unhappy.

The Coward Cracked the Dawn
Hmmm…I originally wrote this song to be performed as a duet. It came about after a night of binge drinking and doing a bar of Xanax. Excessive drug use is lonely unless you write a glorified pompous story about it. No one gives a shit about you. They only care about what you can provide for them. There are so many fake C grade Hunter S Thompson’s in this world. It’s pathetic. Write yourself a drug novel boys, and you’ll get an unlimited amount of pussy. Be an actual drug addict, and you’ll never get a platform, just the intense pain of fucking up your anonymous aging body.

I’m not Frigid..Yet
I had just broken up with a boyfriend who was too embarrassed to call me his girlfriend. As a source of comfort my friends kept encouraging me to screw everyone in town. I couldn’t do it, but I could sit on the sidelines like the old dudes on the Muppets and make fun of it. Have you ever met the crap that’s out there? And the lame rituals you have to do to get that kind of crap to go to bed with you? Sheesh!

What the F*** was I Thinking?
Well, that just about says it all. I do love a good waltz.

Woman Sets Boyfriend On Fire
This was the title on a CNN article, where a woman lights her boyfriends dick on fire, after she finds out he cheated on her. WOW!

Looking For Mr Goodbar
This was fun. We recorded this with a room mic and ended up using the first take.

“This tenuous command of a raucous sound makes for a volatile breed of rock and roll.” – The New Yorker

“Half the fun in seeing this volatile NYC jazz-folk-blues-punk outfit lies in watching the unfamiliar react the first time lead singer Shilpa Ray opens her mouth. Typical reaction: shock and awe. ” – The Village Voice

Few songstresses cut their teeth on more surprising stuff. After all, not every brunette with an acoustic guitar has the good fortune of being best known for her work alongside former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert in International Shades, now do they?

But there’s an expiration date on Brooklynite Alexa Wilding’s “best known” distinction, as the siren singer is set to release her debut EP, a capstone paean to Laura Nyro, Sandy Denny, and the fleet of strong, gilded female songwriters they inspired.

Conceived and written by Alexa Wilding, and featuring contributions from Tim Foljahn – who has shared the helm with the likes of Cat Power, Thurston Moore and the late, great Townes Van Zandt – the release is a chilling whisper, a beautifully corralled song cycle that moves seamlessly from piece to piece, echoing years of history and decades more of possibility. It’s a charm that’s been noticed by everyone from Nylon Mag, to Page Six.

“Lilith Fair resurrects just in time for this New York chanteuse… – NYLON

“Songbird ALEXA WILDING is a throwback to Josephine Baker and Joan Baez. Meet the new meaning of Old School.” – NY POST, PAGE SIX

“[Alexa Wilding] sings wintry, poetic songs that have a ghostly air about them.” – TIME OUT NY

Wilding will take her show to the stage this month in New York City at the Highline Ballroom. Joining her will be Parisian chanteuse Emilie Simon and her brand of Kate Bush-meets-2009 electro pop.

NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC TO GIVE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF TIME TURNS ELASTIC WITH TREY ANASTASIO AT CARNEGIE HALL, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2009, AT 8:00 P.M.

An Evening With Trey Anastasio and the New York Philharmonic,
A Benefit for the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund and the New York Philharmonic, Will Also Include Orchestrations of Classic Anastasio Songs
Featuring Trey Anastasio, Co-Founder, Guitarist, and Lead Singer of Phish

The New York Philharmonic will give the New York premiere of Time Turns Elastic – a work for vocals, electric guitar, and orchestra composed by Trey Anastasio, lead singer and guitarist of Phish, and his longtime collaborator, Don Hart – at Carnegie Hall, Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 8:00 p.m.

An Evening with Trey Anastasio and the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Asher Fisch – a benefit for the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund and the New York Philharmonic – will also include orchestrations of classic Anastasio songs, featuring Mr. Anastasio, who was named one of Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” in his Philharmonic debut. The concert will be presented by Princeton Entertainment and the New York Philharmonic.

Time Turns Elastic blends classical music with rock-blues guitar.

“Initially,” says Mr. Anastasio, “I thought it would be a Phish song, but after I sent a demo of it to Don, it just grew organically into an orchestral piece. I grew up loving Ravel and Eric Clapton equally,” Mr. Anastasio continues, “so I kept saying to Don, ‘why can’t we have a piece of music that’s half Ravel and half Cream’s Disraeli Gears?’”

The work received its world premiere in September 2008 with Orchestra Nashville, conducted by Paul Gambill, at the Ryman Auditorium. It was recently performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop. In May 2009 it was released on Rubber Jungle Records, Mr. Anastasio’s independent label.

The Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund was created by the Anastasio and Manning families to pay tribute to Trey Anastasio’s sister, who passed away earlier this year. The fund was set up to benefit a diverse selection of causes that Kristy supported, which currently include the Seven Below Arts Initiative in Burlington, Vermont; the Carolina Friends School/Afghan Sister School Project in Durham, North Carolina; and the Neuroendocrine Tumor Clinic at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida.

Artists
Over the past 25 years, Trey Anastasio has established himself as a prolific composer, masterful guitarist, and compelling performer. He is a founding member of the Grammy- nominated, genre-melding rock band Phish, which has produced 64 albums and DVDs with combined sales of over seven million units. Renowned for its live performances, Phish was included on the Top Ten Grossing Concert Tours in North America from 1995 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2004, and its series of self-produced festivals is widely regarded as a precursor to the current rock festival boom.

Drawing inspiration from experimental jazz, pop, reggae, metal, classical, and barbershop music, Mr. Anastasio has produced eight solo albums. His June 2004 performance with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival provided the crowd of 80,000 rock fans with an introduction to “new classical” music. Mr. Anastasio has also teamed with the Vermont Youth Orchestra for benefit performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Music Hall in Troy, New York, and the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vermont.

Israeli conductor Asher Fisch has conducted at the world’s great opera houses, and is currently principal guest conductor of the Seattle Opera. A former music director of both the Vienna Volksoper and the New Israeli Opera, he makes frequent guest appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. During the 2009-10 season he will conduct a new production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde for the Seattle Opera, and will make his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in a program featuring Daniel Barenboim as piano soloist. He also will lead concerts with the Kansas City Symphony, and in Naples, Genoa, and Bologna, Italy.

Mr. Fisch has conducted the orchestras of Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis, Toronto, Montreal, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C. In Europe, he appears regularly with the Munich Philharmonic, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, and the Staatskapelle Dresden, which he led on an acclaimed tour of Italy in 2002. In Asia, he has conducted the NHK Orchestra of Tokyo. Mr. Fisch began his conducting career as Daniel Barenboim’s assistant and Kapellmeister at the Berlin Staatsoper, and has been championed by Mr. Barenboim ever since. He is also an accomplished pianist, and has directed Mozart piano concertos and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue from the keyboard.

He continues to perform in chamber concerts and vocal recitals. Mr. Fisch last appeared with the New York Philharmonic in September 2006 for the concerts with Andrea Bocelli, and will lead the Orchestra’s upcoming performances with Mr. Bocelli at Carnegie Hall on September 8-9 and 11, 2009.

On September 22, 2009, Afternoon Records will release Sissy Wish’s ‘Beauties Never Die’ in North America.

The critically acclaimed Norwegian artist will play a special showcase at New York City’s Piano’s on July 20 and July 22, 2009.

In the meantime, fans can check out the video for the track “Float,” which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album.

Watch “Float” video:

‘Beauties Never Die’ is the third full-length album from Bergen, Norway native Siri Wålberg (a.k.a. Sissy Wish).

Produced by Norwegian super-producer Jorgen Traen (Sondre Lerche, Kayzers Orchestra, Jazzkammer, The Golden Serenades,) the album is a daring step forward, affirming Sissy Wish’s place at the forefront of Scandinavian music that is turning pop music on its ear. Banishing the banjos and acoustic guitars of her earlier work, Sissy Wish immerses herself in a world of cheap synthesizers, toy organs and fuzz-guitars.

From the shimmering title track and enticing, incendiary “Dwts” to the layered, richly atmospheric “Tokyo” and the ultra-infectious album closer, “Book,” the record is filled with complex structures, unexpected arrangements and supremely catchy melodies, all backed up by hot, pumpy drums and bass.

Sissy Wish made her debut in 2003 with the stunning ‘Six Feet Tall’ EP, comprised of four tracks recorded in two days with members from Norway’s eclectic group Sister Sonny. As an unsigned artist, she received an unprecedented amount of airplay on radio in her homeland.

Her full length debut, ‘You May Breathe’, was recorded with legendary Norwegian producer HP Gundersen and won her a Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannsprisen) in 2005, shortly after the release of her second album, ‘Tuning In’.

Several U.S. tours followed, which included performances at SXSW in 2007 and 2008. The U.S. dates not only exposed her to a new audience – they sent her in a dramatically new direction artistically.

“I just ate up my band and put them in a box, so I could afford to go on a tour in America. So suddenly I turned out to be a purely electronic duo from Mars, and the response from the crowd was fantastic!” says Sissy Wish. “I’m constantly trying to challenge myself, my music and my live shows.”

With Afternoon Records’ release of ‘Beauties Never Die’, U.S. audiences will now hear the album that grew out of the approach she forged on her tours here.

Music with a Mission:

Ponderosa Stomp Foundation Teams Up with New York’s Lincoln Center to Present Three Nights with Masters of Soul, R&B and Rockabilly July 16, 17 and 19, 2009

“A party on its way to becoming an institution.” – Jon Pareles, the New York Times

The Ponderosa Stomp Concert, a New Orleans musical tradition, highlights the world’s most authentic musicians of rockabilly, R&B, jazz, blues, garage, soul, funk, and swamp pop. The annual show has become a must-see event, functioning as a showcase for living musical history.

The Ponderosa Stomp exists to acknowledge, pay tribute to, and teach the cultural significance of the unsung heroes and heroines of rock-n-roll, rhythm & blues and other forms of American roots music.

The Stomp began when a group of like-minded friends began presenting shows at a small club; it has evolved into a multi-faceted musical, cultural and educational juggernaut. Events in New Orleans every spring include two jam-packed nights of music, a conference and symposium, film festival, record hop and now, a museum exhibit.

Unsung Heroes: The Secret History of Louisiana Rock & Roll is currently on display at the Louisiana State Museum in the historic Cabildo in the heart of the French Quarter, running through May 2010. For 47 years Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has been a national leader in programming for the arts. The collaboration between the Ponderosa Stomp and Lincoln Center is a perfect pairing of two organizations with a mission: to expose and celebrate incredible music and help preserve traditions with transcendent cultural value.

In addition to the stellar musical series the Ponderosa Stomp Concert is presenting with Lincoln Center (more information below), Stomp curator Dr. Ira “Ike” Padnos will join soul singer Tammy Lynn and trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard to discuss the fight to preserve art and culture in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Part of the Summer Scoops Live w/ the Wall Street Journal, the panel titled Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans is moderated by jazz writer Larry Blumenfeld. The Terence Blanchard Quintet will perform to conclude the evening.

The organization behind the Ponderosa Stomp Concert, the music conference, film festival and museum exhibit as well as ongoing educational and cultural initiatives is The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation. It is dedicated to celebrating the legacy, revitalizing the careers and preserving the history of the architects of American music. By providing them a voice and a stage, many Stomp performers enjoy increased visibility as well as new recording and performing opportunities.

The first two nights of The Ponderosa Stomp at Lincoln Center, July 16th and 17, 2009 are part of Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Nights Swing, taking place at Damrosch Park. Each night kicks off with a dance lesson at 6:30 and the music starts at 7:30.

Thursday night features The Get Down, a night of soul music excellence featuring William Bell, Harvey Scales, The Bobbettes and the incomparable Bo-Keys.

Friday night brings rockabilly to the forefront with the Best Dance in Town, in which New Orleans wild man Joe Clay, Sun Record’s Carl Mann and the legendary brother/sister duo The Collins Kids throw down, backed by Deke Dickerson and his Eccofonics.

Sunday, July 19th, a tribute performance takes place at Alice Tully Hall in the Starr Theatre, in which a high-octane array of Stomp artists will pay musical tribute to the “Creole Beethoven”, Wardell Quezergue. Quezergue, nicknamed by Allan Toussaint, has made musical history countless times as the man behind timeless hits like “Mr. Big Stuff”, “Iko Iko” and “Chapel of Love”. A genius musician, arranger and producer who is largely unknown outside of New Orleans, Quezergue helped shape the soulful sounds of the south into international hit records.

The show features R&B icons The Dixie Cups and Robert Parker; soul greats Jean Knight, Dorothy Moore, Tammy Lynn, and Tony Owens; legendary New Orleans drummer Zigaboo Modeliste; New Orleans musician, producer, and session man Mac Rebennack (Dr. John); garage-music pioneer Michael Hurtt; plus Wardell Quezergue’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, an all-star ten-piece band led by Quezergue himself in a rare New York appearance.

2009 Schedule
