Hailing from the nordic land of pop perfection, BWO have had more hit singles in the Pan-European Singles Chart than any other artist in the 21st century. It looks like “Right Here, Right Now” stands to be another mega hit accross the globe.

The first single from the new BWO album ‘Big Science’ is “Right Here Right Now” and features the delicious vocals from ‘The Queen’ of Swedish pop: Velvet.

“Right Here Right Now” will be released in the UK on August 31, 2009.

BWO consisting of Martin Rolinski (lead vocals), Marina Schiptjenko (laptops, backing vocals) and Alexander Bard (laptops, backing vocals) is a laptop-based electro band from Stockholm, Sweden. The band was formed in 2003 and has since released three studio albums: ‘Prototype’ (2004), ‘Halcyon Days’ (2006), ‘Fabricator’ (2007), and the compilation album ‘Pandemonium/The Singles Collection’ (2008).

Velvet’s last single, “Chemistry” was a favourite on the Scott Mills Floorfillers show on Radio 1.

BWO have become famous not only for their capacity to score one hit single after another (they have delivered more hit singles in the Pan-European Singles Chart than any other artist in the 21st century), but also as the latest representation of the proud tradition of Scandinavian tongue-in-cheek pop for the masses, following in the footsteps of their native role models Abba, Roxette and The Cardigans.

There must be something in that icy water that they drink, as Scandinavians seem to have a particularly keen ear for melody and harmony.

Sweden, in particular, has given birth to a number of great popular music acts recently: Robyn, The Knife, Peter Bjorn & John, The Concretes, and Andreas Kleerup.

Kleerup was half of the act responsible for the UK number 1 hit single, “With Every Heartbeat”. The other half was, of course, the feisty asymetrically fringed Robyn. His melancholic electro-pop framed Robyn’s ballad about break-up perfectly and secured it as one of the UK’s most prolific pop moments.

As they wrote the song together they agreed to call it ‘Robyn with Kleerup’ on her album and ‘Kleerup with Robyn’ on his album. He is already a massive star in his native home having won no less than three awards Best Newcomer, Best Composer and Best Producer at Sweden’s 2009 Grammis music awards recently (the equivalent of our Grammys).

Ok, so he’s huge back home, is friends with Robyn and has had a number one single in the UK. So what, you may ask. Well this bearded lothario with grungy locks is about to embark on an assault of the US with his own self-titled album.

Kleerup features collaborations with Lykke Li, Marit Bergman, Titiyo (Neneh Cherry’s younger sister) and of course includes his hit collaboration with Robyn.

Kleerup’s songs are a mixture of his familiar formula of electronica and Swedish female vocal. Good thing this is a formula with proven results as each one is pure electro-pop perfection. The lead single with Titiyo, “Longing For Lullabies” encapsulates his warm and melancholic sound flawlessly.

On the emotive “Until We Bleed”, Kleerup draws a surprisingly warm performance from the blog friendly Lykke Li.

Then there are the songs when Andreas himself steps up to the mic. The jolly “On My Own” has echoes of electro-pop classic Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star”, while on “Misery” he beefs up the drums and goes all Depeche Mode on us. But that’s not the full story. Tracks such as “Hero”, “Thank You For Nothing”, “Tower of Trellick” and “Iris” showcase Kleerup’s different shades. Taking in Kraftweft-esque rhythms via Vangelis inspired soundscapes, they work flawlessly tying the album together.

So there you have it, a skillfully constructed and solid debut that should firmly establish Kleerup as an act to be reckoned with.

Fresh from the huge success of her massive pop smashes “Cry For You” and “Can’t Get Over”, Swedish superstar September returns triumphantly to the summer airwaves with the surefire hit “Until I Die”, released through Hard2Beat records on July 20, 2009.

With an array of glittering worldwide hits under her belt and an amazing debut UK album out this summer, September is fast becoming a pop tour de force to be reckoned with.

“Until I Die” is a euphoric and infectious slice of sexy dance pop heaven that perfectly showcases her distinctive vocal sound. September became an instant pop phenomenon last year when she hit #5 on the official charts with the huge “Cry For You”, spending eight weeks in the Top 10 and over 4 months in the Top 40. The song was the most played dance record of 2008 on UK radio and received a massive 5.3 million views on You Tube. The Swedish pop princess followed this earlier this year with the storming “Can’t Get Over”, an A List record at Radio 1 and a No.1 Dance Chart smash.

September, a pseudonym for the stunning Petra Marklund, is a proud owner of a Grammis, the Swedish equivalent of a Grammy. She recently embarked on HARD2BEAT’s massive ‘Dance Nation’ UK Arena tour, performing to over 50,000 fans. This was September’s second major UK arena tour appearance in under a year, after playing on the huge ‘Clubland Live 2’ Arena Tour in late 2008.

This summer sees September move to London for the rest of 2009 to concentrate on promoting her debut album across the UK, showing how much of a priority she feels this country is for her music.

HARD2BEAT records, the hottest dance label of the moment, have had an all conquering twelve months. Scoring huge hits with Basshunter (including the number one smash “Now You’re Gone” and the platinum album of the same name) Sash! (Platinum sales of “The Best of” & Top 10 smash “Raindrops”) plus Platnum (#2 smash “What’s It Gonna Be” and huge hit “Love Shy”), the label are now continuing their success well into 2009 with September’s summer plans.

With her UK debut album ready and “Until I Die” set to take over the airwaves, September’s profile is destined to go supernova this Summer. Get on board for the ride.

“Until I Die” single out 20th July, album ‘Cry For You’ set for release 27th July, 2009.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending one of the best shows that I’ve seen in a long time. I was looking forward to going to The Jericho Tavern for a change – as opposed to the Carling Academy now the O2 Academy in Oxford. Actually, after listening to Baskery’s music on their MySpace page and watching one of their videos, I was quite surprised that their show was being held at the smaller venue, The Jericho.

From what I had heard before seeing them live, I thought either the Swedish band isn’t quite known here yet and the venue won’t be very busy on a Tuesday night, or the place will be packed to the rafters with fans. Unfortunately the place wasn’t very busy – but made for an intimate night of music.

Stevie One Bloke, One Mandolin opened the show. His name speaks for himself – except that “harmonica” isn’t included in the title. Stevie seems like an interesting character, with his colourful stories about life and friendship along with his descriptive lyrics and the unique combination of mandolin and occasional harmonica. It’s no surprise that he has a busy tour schedule this year.

InLight was next. The Oxford based band was stripped down to an acoustic set with just two members, Charlie Cooke and Mike Riddle. I’m not sure why they used the term acoustic though, since they were playing electric guitar and keyboard. Mike played an acoustic guitar for a couple songs – maybe that warranted the term? They sounded good, with witty banter at times, nice vocals and instrumentation. “Bridges” was a stand out song. I would look forward to seeing the full band at some point.

After their set, my anticipation high, I looked around the room and was surprised to see that people weren’t flooding in for the final act, Baskery. I had to keep reminding myself that they’re a new band and that not many people know about them yet.

As the girls were on stage, tuning up their instruments, something caught my eye. Why was the banjo player, Greta, setting up the snare drum on its side, on the floor, next to the kick drum? Well, as I soon found out, get this, she plays SLIDE banjo while sitting at the drums, playing the kick drum and the snare with her bare feet, sometimes while playing harmonica, and sings brilliant harmonies alongside her equally talented sisters, Stella on upright bass, and the youngest, Sunniva Bondesson on acoustic guitar.

The minute they started playing and singing their self-described “High voltage, Killbilly, Banjopunk, Blues-grass, Mud-country” music, with the tightest harmonies that I’ve ever heard live, I knew that I was in for a startlingly great night of music. That anticipation that I was feeling before they played was there throughout the set, after each song. Sometimes they would switch lead vocal parts, but thankfully, would always come back to those harmonies – harmonies so good that if you could see them, they might have looked like gold dust sparkling in the air.

That night we were treated to a Grammy Award winning performance by a very talented band that hopefully a lot more people will know about in the near future.

New band Little Majorette are Petter Winnberg, Nils Tornqvist and Zoe Durrant. They met in Stockholm late 2006 and decided to form Little Majorette in 2007.

The music sounds sexy cute with a playful sound of a French summer in the 60’s, but having been recorded in the middle of a dark Swedish winter ensured Zoe didn’t lose her British grey undertones and after a lot of business-class Ryanair flights between London and Stockholm, they now have a growing catalogue of infectious songs.

You can buy their single “London” on 7″ vinyl from www.myspace.com/littlemajorette and they will be releasing an album soon.

Two new Kora Records October releases are coming up! Ithaca, NY’s The Piano Creeps and Malmo, Sweden’s Fredrik.

On October 28th, 2008 it’s the album ‘Na Na Ni’ by Fredrik from Malmo, Sweden.

Fredrik is a new remarkable pop outfit, casually capturing the spirit of classic storybook drama through a highly personal, foresty brand of experimental pop. Despite the name, Fredrik is actually a small orchestra of six, sporting input from some of the very finest of the swedish pop and experimental underground (Band in Box, Scraps of Tape, Vit Päls, The LK).

Download “Black Fur” Mp3

Drawing on traditional European folk influences like The Fairport Convention or Bo Hansson, crooning songwriters as well as a host of eclectic references like Moondog, Steve Reich, Jim O’Rourke, Maja Ratke or Barbara Morgenstern, Fredrik forges a sound that is both eclectic and homecomingly soothing.

More to be announced.
(updates posted at Kora Records – Shows)

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, Kora Records is releasing ‘Future Blues (for me and you)’ by The Piano Creeps, the collaboration of Billy Coté, Mary Lorson and Kathy Ziegler.

Coté and Lorson were the songwriter and lead singer of 90’s alt-pop band Madder Rose. That band made four albums, three of which were really good, and toured the world, headlining the Melody Maker stage at England’s Reading Festival, doing a John Peel session, and enjoying critical approval if not staggering sales. After Madder Rose, Coté created the nihilist slack-hop project Jazz Cannon with vocalist Don Greene while Lorson explored her inner auteur on three Saint Low discs with UK label Cooking Vinyl.

The pair have also joined forces to create several original film scores (including HBO’s “What Remains” about the photographer Sally Mann) and one very amusing young male human. Their songs have been placed in numerous films and television shows, including the last season of “The Sopranos,” “Alias,” “Felicity,” “Skins” (UK) and others too forgettable to mention.

While all this was going on, Kathy Ziegler was touring as a multi-instrumentalist with Abra Moore, Jim Lauderdale, and Donna the Buffalo, winning international songwriting competitions and finding time to write and produce three excellent solo cds. Ziegler produced the track “Spider” on Lorson’s third Saint Low CD, “Realistic.” She also knows how to build and fix guitars. Ziegler and husband songwriter Jairo van Lunteren will relocate with their two young children to the Netherlands, and will continue to tour, both with the Piano Creeps and their solo projects.

A glimpse at their past – Madder Rose performing at Glastonbury in 1994.

Every week until the release of my new album ‘Jonestown’ I’m inviting a new guest artist to perform one of my songs with me. When all the live videos are released there will be a competition where you can win a box with albums from all the guest artists.

This week’s guest artist: William Crafoord

Watch video: Sofia Talvik / William Crafoord – Clown:

When William called me on his way over to shoot this video, he asked me if he should bring a red clown’s nose. As it turned out he didn’t, but it might have been great fun, and the fact that he thought of this says a lot about him as an artist and performer. You could easily say William isn’t afraid of making anything a show. This is why I’m so happy to announce him as this week’s guest artist.

William Crafoord is an old time idol of mine. When I was about 12, William had a Swedish rap band called “Just D”. It’s safe to say I had all their albums and was somewhat obsessed Anyway, William has come a long way since then and has released several albums, both as part of the group “Just D” and as a solo artist.

Lately William has put together several musical and theatrical shows, with well known artists such as Salem al Fakir as well as with his dog Django (who also participates in this video). Here you’ll see him singing my song “Clown” from my upcoming album ‘Jonestown’ with me. Enjoy!

Sofia Talvik previews the upcoming album ‘Jonestown’ with her friends.

From Sofia Talvik:

The 27th of August, 2008, I’m releasing my third album ‘Jonestown’. To give you a preview of the songs from the album I have gathered 12 of my favorite Swedish artists who will each perform one song from the album live with me on video. You will get the opportunity to meet well known artists as well as up and coming new stars, and when the videos are all released we’ll turn it into a competition where you can win a set of 13 albums, one from each guest artist, and of course my new album ‘Jonestown’.

First you’ll meet Jonna Lee, and be sure to stay tuned to see who comes next.

Here you will find the first video featuring Jonna Lee: “Diamonds”

Critically praised Swedish artist El Perro Del Mar is back with her sophomore LP ‘From The Valley To The Stars’, set for North American release on April 22, 2008 by The Control Group. The single “Glory To The World” is available now on iTunes.

Sarah Assbring, the sole member behind El Perro Del Mar, began working on ‘From The Valley To The Stars’ during the spring and summer of 2007. The recordings were done in her own studio in Gothenburg.

Sarah explains that she “tried to let the recording process be as free and organic as possible. Many takes are first ones. In contrary to my first album which generally was guitar oriented, I mostly play the piano or organ on this one. I myself have been in charge of all recording, production and mixing.”

Having already released an LP and several EP’s, Sarah focussed on making ‘From The Valley To The Stars’ “something that in its character might appear more like a hymn or a psalm but in a pop costume.” However, this is not to take away anything from her beautiful voice and music.

In addition to the April 22nd North American release of ‘From The Valley To The Stars’, El Perro Del Mar will be touring North America with Lykke Li and Anna Ternheim starting in early May.

Sony BMG is set to release ‘Johnny Cash Live At Osteraker Prison’ on 3rd March 2008 in the UK.

After 35 Years, this legendary concert can now be owned on CD – featuring 12 bonus tracks not featured on the original LP.

This rediscovered gem is now available to buy on CD. The lost prison album has been resurrected which is bound to delight fans of Johnny Cash ‘Live From San Quentin’ and ‘Live From Folsom Prison’. ‘Johnny Cash Live At Osteraker Prison’ has been expanded with new liner notes and remastered with 12 bonus tracks. The album shot into the top 30 when it was released in Sweden. In fact, the liner notes are written by Borje Lundberg – co-author of Hello, Sweden! I’m Johnny Cash.

This electrifying concert recording includes a raucous instrumental version of “I Walk The Line” as well as other classics such as “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Me & Bobby McGee”, “San Quentin” and “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins.

Johnny Cash opened with “A Boy Named Sue” for a fully-seated auditorium and for the next hour continued with some of his biggest hits and fan favorites. To commemorate the day, Johnny had learned a few Swedish words: “Thank you my friends, I hope you like our music.”

He was a passionate man, but the country star was particularly interested with the downtrodden. Prisoners. Though playing shows in prisons was not unusual to Johnny (San Quentin, Folsom State Prison) – he had never performed at a prison outside the U.S.A. when he took the stage at 1:10 p.m. on October 3, 1972 at Osteraker Prison north of Stockholm, Sweden.

One of the last great Johnny Cash albums to finally see a release on CD, this truly is a must-have for all fans of the man who walked the line

While high-profile pop bands from Sweden were busily grabbing press attention, their countryman Kristoffer Ragnstam was working under the radar screen, making music that refused to fit the Scandinavian stereotype.

His sound was different – too different to ignore. Musicians took note, not only in his country but in Germany and Japan. The media responded too, going overboard with effusions that, at the request of this somewhat self-effacing artist, we won’t repeat here.

It’s strange, when you think about it, because Kristoffer didn’t play that many gigs. In fact, he didn’t even play any instruments, other than drums, and yet managed to cut a solo demo that won him his first record deal. Soft-spoken, with a wry sense of humor, he thrived primarily in recording studios, where he apprenticed to staff engineers on sessions and then applied their lessons to his own projects, working after-hours until crashing on the nearest couch.

On his U.S. debut, Sweet Bills, Kristoffer bundles the results into one of the most idiosyncratic packages heard since the advent of Beck. Each track veers unpredictably to the next: The wall-of-sound pop of “Lonely Lane,” broadcast by roaring guitars and thundering drums, gives way to the simmering funk of “Doctor, Give the World a Smile.” Mellow horns and backward guitar samples on “Sweet Bills” explode into a complex groove that nudges surreal lyrics – “My girl wants to be an astronaut/My boss wants to be a talent scout” – through “Born as a Lion.”

You can also sense a chronology to Sweet Bills. Echoes of sixties garage rock permeate “Never Get Used to You,” an eighties electronic dance hook slices through “Man Overboard,” and on “Keila” the music is timeless and the message playfully twisted: “I’ve been waiting for you to call the last seven years,” Kristoffer intones. “You see, honey, we’ve got a problem …”

Kristoffer Ragnstam performs “Colombian Eyes”.

Kristoffer and his band performed some of this material during their first trip to the States, in late 2005. Their sets at the Knitting Factory, the Living Room, and other venues stirred interest in New York, from audiences as well as label people. One of the latter brought him onboard at bluhammock music, without even having to trot anyone from Abba out as incentive.

Sweet Bills is, Kristoffer insists, a project he can introduce without hesitation into the unsuspecting American market. “It’s very intimate – naked, even. I’m not trying to be smart or anything. I’m just doing what comes naturally. Sweet Bills is one hundred percent me.”

One hundred percent Kristoffer: As the world will soon discover, music doesn’t get any hotter than that.

Here’s what some people have been saying:

“Think an eclectic blend of Beck, Finley Quay, Roxy Music, Supergrass, but none of these references does it any justice. You just need to listen for yourself to decide.”

-Bruce Warren @ WXPN

“On his U.S. debut, Sweet Bills, Kristoffer bundles the results into one of the most idiosyncratic packages heard since the advent of Beck…one hundred percent Kristoffer: as the world will soon discover, music doesn’t get any hotter than that.”

-Filter Magazine

“Sweet Bills is a great mix of radio worthy rockers, subtle love songs, and spacey psych-rock. Every song on the album is wonderfully catchy, whether fronted by Ragnstam’s rockstar voice or a clever falsetto– both of which are remarkably appealing.”
