A glammed-up rock stomper, “Uprising” is the first single from the band’s self-produced fifth studio album ‘The Resistance’, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on September 15th.

Recorded in Italy, the album was mixed by famed audio engineer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, who is known for his work with U2, Depeche Mode, No Doubt, and Oasis, among many others.

The single is the first new music from Muse since ‘Black Holes and Revelations’, which debuted at Number 9 on Billboard’s album chart in July 2006.

Over the last few years, Muse – comprised of vocalist/guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dom Howard – have played to sold-out crowds worldwide in support of ‘Black Holes and Revelations’, which spawned the Modern Rock chart hits “Knights Of Cydonia,” “Starlight,” and “Supermassive Black Hole” (also featured on the soundtrack to the blockbuster 2008 film Twilight).

In the U.S. alone, the band, who hail from the tiny town of Teignmouth in Devon, England, performed at the Lollapalooza Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Las Vegas’s Vegoose Festival, and KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas. They also sold out New York City’s Madison Square Garden and The Forum in Los Angeles.

In anticipation of their new album, Muse will perform at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13th, two days before ‘The Resistance’ is released in the U.S.

After receiving press regarding the upcoming release of ‘Roy Orbison The Soul Of Rock And Roll‘, I was looking around YouTube for a video to add along with it. What I ended up finding was footage of Bono (U2) talking about Roy Orbison and how he came to write “She’s A Mystery To Me” (’Mystery Girl’ album).

Hearing Bono talk about it gives me chills – and what really strikes me is how much respect Bono had (and still has) for the man – and his beautiful voice. “She’s A Mystery To Me” is such a strong song, and before I watched the Bono video, I had no idea that he had written it. The things you learn.

So, now I’m hoping more people can hear this wonderful story about songwriting and mutual respect between two musicians:

imeem and Universal Music Enterprises have announced that deluxe editions of U2’s first three albums, ‘Boy’ (1980), ‘October’ (1981) and ‘War’ (1983) will be available for free streaming on imeem starting July 15, 2008 one week prior to the albums’ releases on July 22, 2008.

Following the release of the re-mastered edition of ‘The Joshua Tree’ last year, Edge has overseen a similar re-mastering of the first three albums, all of which have been re-mastered from the original audio tapes.

The deluxe versions of the albums include a wealth of b-sides, live tracks and rarities.

Fans can listen to these deluxe versions of U2’s albums in their entirety on the U2 imeem profile (http://imeem.com/u2music).

Fans can easily share these albums with friends or embed them on their blogs, websites, and profiles on other social networking services, including MySpace and Facebook, using imeem’s embeddable music playlist widgets. These deluxe editions will also be available for pre-order on imeem.

The first video features clips of famous musicians performing and singing in sync with the music like Frank Zappa, Billie Holiday, Simon and Garfunkel, Roy Orbison, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Marley, The Clash, Jimi Hendrix, modern day musicians and many more. I could see Bono in “the crowd” a couple of times during the video and then finally saw The Edge toward the end.

I couldn’t help but think how good a drinking game this video could make. Figuring out who’s who, where the band members are in the crowd etc. The rules could be whoever is last in calling out the names of each musician as they appear has to drink. That would be a pretty quick moving game, though. Maybe with shots?

Anyway, I bet there will be a few angry musicians out there wondering why they weren’t included!

The second video for “Window In The Skies” features old footage of U2 including family photos and album sleeves.

Of course besides the videos there’s also the song to address. U2 has definitely discovered the recipe for creating great pop songs and “Window In The Skies” is up there with one of their best. Very melodic throughout and well written, to no surprise.

“The Saints Are Coming” is a song new to my ears but Dave, being the punk that he is, made it very clear from the start that the Green Day and U2 collaboration is a cover by scottish punk band The Skids, which was originally released in 1978. The video for the song is now playing constantly here in the UK and I can see why some might find it a bit controversial. Politics aside, there are also rumblings around the internet about the cover itself and whether or not U2 and Green Day do the song justice.

I like both versions and I think it’s great not only that they’re helping out the musicians in New Orleans, but U2 and Green Day are also putting the spotlight back onto The Skids as well as punk music itself – which mainstream radio and the industry tends to ignore.
