The Shutka Champions in a league of their own

The Shutka Champions sounds like they might be the winners in a weird European sport. They sound as if they’re involved in the very type of pursuit you’ve been seeking all your life. Well, close but no candy bar this time, mate.

The Shutka Champions

Shutka is a town in the Balkans that boasts the largest Roma gypsy population in the world. The town is full of unique personalities and most claim to be the champion of something or other.

So the geography lecture ends because we are not here to marvel over the human spirit. No. We are here to salute the musical champions of Portsmouth, England. The Shutka Champions all hail from in and around the area and have a more than slight admiration for anything weird and wonderful.

It reflects in their music, like the opening track “The Shutka Champion”. With a percussive intro opening up into an almost ‘Manchester’ sounding type of chorus, but that similarity does them no justice at all.

This band has me scratching my head trying to put them into a musical box so to speak. I can’t. One minute they sound old skool then the next they are leaping out of the future with a style I am unfamiliar with.

All I can really say is go out and purchase their debut 7 track CD and it will be the best call for the summer of 2010. Lazy, energetic and inspirational is what this sound is.

Don’t believe me? Then go become a Shutka Champion yourself.
