GiddyUp Music @ The Wheatsheaf, Oxford review: Scott Gordon, Ady Davey, more

GiddyUp Music at The Wheatsheaf Oxford

Another Super Sunday Hair Of The Dog for the GiddyUp Music entourage at The Wheatsheaf here in Oxford, England and it was good to see them all out in force. We (Purple May) had a great time playing. Jenny and I enjoyed breaking in some new covers such as “That’s Entertainment” and “Because The Night.” As well as digging out a few of our own home-grown tunes too. I think our selection of songs by The Jam, The Who and The Small Faces, definitely brought in some of the local Mod contingent judging on that vehicle in the alleyway!

GiddyUp Music Oxford Lambretta

After we had packed our toys away we cleared a space and I introduced Mark Sollis and Mark Bosely. Mark occasionally sits in on the bass with Mr. Sollis, and after all, when you have a song called “Mark Bosely”, you kind of feel obliged. They got into some toe tapping jamming at one point and had everyone chanting “Mark Bosely!” by the end of their set. We look forward to the next time Marks!

There is a lot of great entertainment here in Oxford and we don’t take it for granted, but one of the finest exponents of fronting a good song is our very own Ady Davey and Shakin’ Lips. The lads have been at it now since I can’t remember. With Ady sporting a fine cowboy hat and shades they took us into to the world of Ady and Shakey, which by the way is a really enjoyable place to be. Always a favourite at The Wheatsheaf. My favourite is their take on “The Midnight Gambler.” I think it is easily one of the best versions in the world, but that’s just me.

Wow, still two more bands to go. You know what? I think we must run the longest session of music in Oxford. 3.30pm till 8.30pm that’s, what? 5 hours more or less? Anyway…so I introduce Jesters a 3-piece folk band – guitar, fiddle and double bass. Their music really suited the day, nice breezy happy go lucky folk to dance to. In fact at one point, we were outside in the alleyway and Christine Ellis the fiddle player came out and played for us, so Ady Davey and I obliged by doing what the Americans call a do-si-do. I really enjoyed their version of “Matty Groves.”

Lastly we welcome to the floor our old friend Scott Gordon and his band and for some reason, more than likely, lots of rehearsals. But I like to think it was because of the magic of the night, he sounded the best that we had heard. Really cracking set Scott. The drummer and the bass player were really on it! With Shakin’ Lips joining in on his harmonica it was a great sound, and at some points even dubbed up a bit.

Thanks again to one and all, and all those musician types who come and make it happen. See you next time for the Henry Cluney (ex Stiff Little Fingers) special on Sunday 19th June 2016!

Alicia Keys to perform at Opening Ceremony of UEFA Champions League Final

Alicia Keys

UEFA and Pepsi® are excited to announce that for the first time ever, the UEFA Champions League Final will feature a global live music headline performance as part of the opening ceremony pageantry.

Taking place on May 28th 2016 at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan, Italy, the “UEFA Champions League Final Opening Ceremony presented by Pepsi” will feature Alicia Keys as the inaugural artist to usher in a new live entertainment era for the UEFA Champions League Final. Airing in more than 220 countries, the UEFA Champions League Final is the most watched annual sporting event in the world.

“I’m extremely excited to share my new music at the UEFA Champions League Final, an event that is celebrated in every corner of the world,” said Alicia Keys. “This is going to be a powerful moment in history and one that represents the spirit of all the similarities we share no matter where we live and who we are. I’m honored to be a special part of such a beloved experience.”

This year’s “UEFA Champions League Final Opening Ceremony presented by Pepsi” will merge the worlds of world-class music, entertainment and sports, as well as celebrate design and fashion as a nod to the host city, Milan.

“Music, entertainment and sports have always been a vital part of the Pepsi DNA. We are the brand that invented entertainment marketing and continue to push creative boundaries,” said Carla Hassan, SVP, Global Brand Management, Global Beverage Group, PepsiCo. “By creating a global stage as part of the UEFA Champions League Final for the first time, Pepsi will produce an epic, memorable moment that will draw an even broader global fan base to the pitch, elevate the excitement of the 2016 final, and establish a new tradition for one of the world’s most beloved sport spectacles.”

The revived opening ceremony marks an expansion of PepsiCo’s existing partnership with the UEFA Champions League, bringing one of the world’s most passionate musicians to a massive global audience and further heightens the excitement and grandeur of the world’s most watched annual sporting event. PepsiCo initially joined forces with the UEFA Champions League in 2015, announcing a partnership with the prestigious European club football tournament where Lay’s, Gatorade and Pepsi MAX / Pepsi serve as lead brands for the competition.

Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA Marketing Director, commented, “With an iconic and storied history in music, Pepsi was the ideal partner to bring an epic music performance to the world’s most watched annual sporting event for the first time, and UEFA is delighted that Alicia Keys will be performing in Milan. The UEFA Champions League Final is the ultimate stage in European football, bringing together the two best teams on the continent. With such a highly respected and truly global artist performing ahead of the UEFA Champions League Final, it heightens even further the appeal of the match and consequently will reach a broader audience demographic, which ultimately further strengthens the global status of UCL.”

In addition to the “UEFA Champions League Final Opening Ceremony presented by Pepsi” performance, Keys – who recently joined Season 11 of NBC’s hit show The Voice in the United States and will release her 8th album this year – will be featured in a variety of integrated campaign elements leading up to the performance.

Neil Young to release new album Earth via Reprise Records

Neil Young

Neil Young will release a new album, entitled EARTH, on June 17th 2016 via Reprise Records. The album features performances of songs from a range of Young’s albums, including last year’s The Monsanto Years, 1990’s Ragged Glory, and 1970’s After the Gold Rush. The audio was captured during Young’s 2015 tour with The Promise of the Real, fronted by Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar) and Micah Nelson (guitar, vocals) – Willie Nelson’s sons. The tour included Young performing solo and with the band for a full electric show.

A new take on some of Young’s most beloved songs, EARTH features the live recordings, along with added musical overdubs, as well as sounds of the earth, such as city sounds like car horns, sounds of insects, and animal sounds from bears, birds, crickets, bees, horses, cows – creating a very strange, yet beautiful atmosphere.

“Ninety-eight uninterrupted minutes long, EARTH flows as a collection of 13 songs from throughout my life, songs I have written about living here on our planet together,” says Young. “Our animal kingdom is well represented in the audience as well, and the animals, insects, birds, and mammals actually take over the performances of the songs at times.”

On Friday, May 6th 2016, in Los Angeles between 7:00pm – 9:00pm, The Natural History Museum Los Angeles County will present “An Evening With Neil Young”, as part of their “First Fridays” event series. “First Fridays” is a monthly event at the Natural History Museum that includes live music, DJ sets, and scientific discussions/presentations. For this event, Young will present the first public playback of his upcoming release, EARTH in its entirety in Pono high definition fidelity audio. Young will deliver the opening portion of the program with his insights and explanation of the making of EARTH, and its contents. This will be the first-ever public album preview by Young in his career and the first event of its kind for NHM. For tickets and further details, go to: “First Fridays”.

New single “Siren” by London-based band Kid Cupid

Kid Cupid

After joining forces only a year ago and already being compared to huge acts including London Grammar and Young Galaxy, the London-based indie-electro quartet Kid Cupid are definitely ones to watch in 2016.

Their upcoming new single “Siren” is the perfect introduction to what’s yet to come. Filled with backing harmonies highlighting the importance of the lyrics and topped with Laura’s incredible vocal delivery instantly draws comparisons to CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry.

Produced by the band themselves, the track ticks all the right boxes from start to finish. It consist of attention-grabbing lyrics, flowing real-world analogies as well as plenty of space for the listener’s diy interpretation. Their clever use of a broader range of instruments such as the snare drums to add the captivating rolling and additional tribal drum patterns resemble the likes of “Jungle” as well as Bastille’s hit “Pompeii”.

“Siren” is the lead track taken from their forth-coming EP, and it will be available for sale and download everywhere 3rd June 2016.
