Division Promotions is extremely pleased to announce that legendary Welsh rockers Funeral For A Friend have joined our roster.

Funeral For A Friend will be shooting the new video for forthcoming single, “Waterfront Dance Club” this Saturday 17th May, 2008.

The exciting news is that the boys want you – the fans – to be in it! The single will be released in July and it’s the first single from the band’s new album which is to be released on their own record label. So as well as being in the video, you’ll get a chance to hear the track before anyone else.

You’ll be needed for approximately 3-4 hours towards the end of the day (late afternoon/early evening) and the shoot will take place at a location in the Greater London area which is TBC but will be easily accessible from a tube station. You MUST be 16 or older and will need to bring appropriate ID to prove this. You’ll also have to be responsible for getting yourself to and from the shoot and you must be prepared to get involved. Everyone involved will be aiming to have as much fun as possible.

If you’d like to be part of something huge that the band are stoked about then drop your name, age and mobile number to waterfrontdanceclub@hotmail.co.uk to obtain some more information. Time is of the essence and the more the merrier so don’t be shy now and step right up!

“The Girl Is Mine” is one of the best known tracks from Thriller (who of a certain age doesn’t know the Paul McCartney / Michael Jackson exchange by heart?) and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the world’s best-selling album, Black Eyed Peas maestro Will.i.am gives the single a brand new super fresh feel.

Taking over duetting duties from Sir Paul, on the “The Girl Is Mine 2008″, will.i.am mixes in a funky, updated sound to the track which will appeal to younger fans approaching the song with fresh ears, as well as keep the original Michael Jackson crowd mighty pleased.

A couple of sneak previews from the ever-supportive MJ News Online (Michael Jackson Fan Club) and Michael Jackson News Network have drawn highly positive reactions:

“This track is much more than a classic remix – Will and Michael have made it a song in its own right” – MJ News Online

“The Girl Is Mine 2008 (with Will.i.am)”:

Digital release date, UK (1 track) – 14th January 2008

Physical CD Single / 12″ and Digital (3 tracks) UK Release Date – 28th January 2008

Last night, the world premiere for the 2007 production of ABBA The Show took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I was there, and for about two hours, I think I was surrounded by the happiest people on the planet. There have been a few people in my life who are big ABBA fans, but I didn’t realize how hardcore their fan base was until last night at the sold out show.

This was the first time that I had been to the Royal Albert Hall. It’s amazing how intimate and yet large the historical venue is. Beautiful as well. I’ve seen many concerts at the Royal Albert Hall on TV, but I don’t remember seeing an audience quite like the one at the ABBA show. Let me just put it this way – if you’re thinking about buying tickets to one of the shows when they go on tour next year, be prepared for a party atmosphere – and to dance. If you don’t, then you will feel out of place!

The show seemed so authentic, and there were times that I felt like I was in a working wax museum. The costumes, the way that the singers and musicians from Sweden’s Waterloo playing Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida moved, the songs, the audience reaction – it was as if I was transported in time, back to when ABBA was on tour in the 70’s. This seemed even more surreal when original band members including Ulf Andersson (sax) and Lasse Wellander (guitar) came on stage to play.

There was narration by Matthew Freeman, who was also conducting The National Symphony Orchestra of London. In between sets, he would introduce each era of the ABBA phenomenon – through song and music, periods of when they formed, were on tour, divorce and their 1974 Eurovision win with the infamous, “Waterloo”, costumes and all.

Of course all of the popular ABBA songs were there: “Mamma Mia”, “Dancing Queen”, “Money Money Money”, “Knowing Me Knowing You”, “Take A Chance On Me”, “Voulez Vous”, “Chiquitita”, “Fernando”, “SOS” and more.

Camilla Hedren as Agnetha and Katja Nord as Anni-Frid (Frida) looked and sounded great. The band was top notch as were the backup singers. I’m sure it will be their performance that I’ll remember for a long time whenever I hear ABBA’s music.

If you’re an ABBA fan, not to be missed. Highly recommended.

Led Zeppelin is set to play a reunion concert at the O2 Arena in London on – New Date: December 10th, 2007 (pushed back from the original date of November 26, 2007 due to Jimmy Page fracturing his finger). Apparently over 25 million people registered for the ballot which was initially going to close on September 17th, but has now been extended until midday Wednesday September 19, 2007 due to crashed servers and high demand. Successful applicants will be notified 01 October 2007. Tickets are £125.00 + booking fee.

Led Zeppelin band members showing up for the gig at the O2 Arena include singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones. This will be their first performance together in 19 years. Jason Bonham will replace his late father John Bonham on drums. This should be a major treat for all Led Zeppelin fans, and if you can’t get a ticket, then hopefully there will be suitable at home viewing options.

Along with Led Zeppelin, other bands and artists set to play include Pete Townshend, Foreigner, Paolo Nutini and Bill Wyman And The Rhythm Kings.

The show is a tribute concert to the late Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records and is being held to raise money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which pays for university scholarships in the UK, US and Turkey. Ahmet Ertegun was a close friend and conspirator to Led Zeppelin.

Last month when I posted about the awesome Rush show at Red Rocks, I threatened to go catch the show again before the tour went to Europe. This last weekend I got it all together and made a quick trip to Chicago to catch the Snakes & Arrows tour at the forgettably named “First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre” (formerly the Tweeter Center)”.

I didn’t really know what to expect from the venue, as the photos from Google earth made it look like a rock quarry. Turns out the venue was actually kind’a cool. It’s a weird combination of outdoor Amphitheatre with a roof and skyboxes suspended from the ceiling a couple hundred feet above the floor.

It has a grass general admission area beyond the covered part that actually looks under the skyboxes. It holds an amazing 30K people and from where I was (the 18th row) it looked full. When I was a kid I wanted to be a live sound “front of house” engineer and have always been interested in live sound setups. My best friend in High School (John Kerns), went on to live that dream. When I entered the venue, I thought to myself, wow the sound is either going to be good, or really bad, here. I suspect through the years, quite of few of each kind of show has been heard there.

From where I was the sound was quite good. I was on-axis with the stage left sound reinforcement stack, so any weird sound artifacts didn’t make it to me, thankfully. Not surprising the mix sounded much different than the Rush show at Red Rocks. The two venues could not be more different, as Red Rocks has what has to be the steepest seating angle of any venue, is narrow and deep, and only holds about half the people as the former Tweeter Center. I found the mix to have much more low-end then the Redrocks show, which is good with a band like Rush with such solid Bass lines in combination with perfectly mic’d drums. This was without a doubt the best drum sound reinforcement I have ever heard at any show, anywhere.

The concert was tight, opening with “Limelight” after a hilarious dream sequence video at the beginning. I missed the opening at Red Rocks so it was good to see the entire show from front to back. I really like the new album so I was happy that most of the new songs made it into the show. At Redrocks, I thought the strongest song was “Workin’ them Angels”. With the Chicago show, interestingly it was my least favorite song. (after “Circumstances” from Hemospheres). It seemed to me that the pace of the song was much slower in Chicago and it lost a little something. At the Chicago show I thought “Armor and Sword” was by far the strongest song. I think this had to do with the incredible low-end of the sound system or simply the mix that night. Interestingly, I haven’t given that song unusual airtime in my car, but I have to go back now as a result of that amazing sound. The bottom line is you simply have to play “Armor and Sword” loud and with a good stereo setup to appreciate it. It’s one of those songs that are magic when performed live. “The Main Monkey Business” was just a great instrumental piece with the same energy and excitement as the Redrocks show. As with Redrocks, a guest chef came out during that song and basted the chickens in Geddy’s Hen House Roasters “bass cabinets”, although in the Chicago show another chef made a second appearance later during a different song (there must have been two celebrities to appease that night

The big surprise for me was the inclusion of “Natural Science” in the play list. For some reason I thought that was a kind of personal top ten Rush song of mine but maybe not other Rush fans. However, after the song the guy next to me high fived the two 14 year old guys next to me and yelled “It doesn’t get any fu***ng better then that”. Well said, old dude that only drove 20 miles to the show (as oppose to my 880 mile plane flight).

I have read several of Neil Peart’s books, completing “Traveling Music” on this trip. In one of the books Neil outlines his amazement for the age demographic that follows Rush. I have experienced this first hand, now, myself with these two shows. There are a good number of teenage boys in the 14-15 age bracket that were in the audience. I can also verify that the ones around me were all musicians of some kind/level, also confirming what Neil said in his book “Traveling Music”. Don’t get me wrong, a full 50 percent of the audience is 35-45 year old guys like me. If I had to guess however, I would say most of the audience discovered Rush post “Moving Pictures” – 1981, based on their excitement levels about various songs. They aren’t “old school like me” This is also confirmed by Neil as “Moving Pictures” had twice the public appeal of any Rush album prior (maybe even since). The younger people were likely brought to this show or earlier ones by their parents. There were a lot of kids there with their parents, and it made me feel guilty that I didn’t bring Darby to the show (either one).

The encores were what I think is standard for this tour, “One Little Victory”, “A Passage to Bangkok” and “YYZ”. What surprised me at both shows was how well “A Passage to Bangkok” fits in with later generation Rush songs on ‘Snakes & Arrows.’ “A Passage to Bangkok” was released relatively early in their discography on the 2112 album in 1976. Personally, I find it unusual when old Rush and new Rush sound good back-to-back. After hearing this ordering, I think that song was a bit of foreshadowing of “Rush to come”.

I couldn’t get my camera into this Chicago show like I did the Red Rocks show. But a quick flickr search revealed that Dakota seemed to just fine. I don’t know Dakota but I thank Dakota for lending the photos to this blog post. The full set can be seen here and they are awesome!

It was a great show, and worth the trip to Chicago. I would go again, but I’m getting dangerously close to stalker behavior so I think this is it for this tour. I look forward to the next tour. I think I will take Darby with me to that one.

London all girl band The Priscillas have been turning heads with their latest single "Superhero" and B-side "Y.O.Y." by touching the heartstrings of those nostalgic for 80's punk.
London all girl band The Priscillas have been turning heads with their latest single “Superhero” and B-side “Y.O.Y.” by touching the heartstrings of those nostalgic for late 70’s punk. They also bring to the table their own style and pop sass and something tells me, their live shows are not to be missed if you’re looking for a fun night out on the town.

The Priscillas formed in 2004 and as mentioned on their Myspace page, they’ve played shows with “Art Brut, The Pipettes, The Subways, and, uh, James Blunt” and have supported “all-time heroes such as The Damned, The Cramps, The Seeds, The Monks, and The 5.6.7.8s at bigger venues, including London’s Astoria.” This past weekend The Priscillas played the BBC Introducing Stage at the Bestival Music Festival and went down a storm.

They have a few videos available on YouTube and they’re quite a treat to watch. The video for “Superhero” features dancing Barbie dolls, red and blue satin superhero-like outfits and Superman. It’s great to see a band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously and yet are able to convey the talent to entertain.

I know it’s not the time of year to bring up Christmas, but The Priscillas have a great Christmas song called “One Christmas Wish”. The video for it is in their YouTube Profile. I see that it was added one year ago, but hopefully they’ll release it as a Christmas single later this year and if they do, I would look forward to watching it climb the pop charts.

Trivia: Top designer Anna Sui mentioned The Priscillas in a recent interview with Metro New York. She saw them play in Cornwall, England while she was there for a literary festival.

“Get your free Prince Planet Earth CD in the Mail on Sunday!”

I wonder if there are kids still selling papers on street corners yelling out the headlines over and over to passersby. If they still exist that’s what they will be yelling this Sunday in England.

If you haven’t already heard the news, Prince will be giving away his new ‘Planet Earth’ CD in the Mail on Sunday. That’s this Sunday (July 15th 2007) mind you. There’s been so much talk about this free CD that every Sunday for the last month or so, I’ve been stealing cheeky glances at the papers to see if the Prince CD has been packaged yet.

Actually the hype has reached its peak this week and now the story has been all over the major TV news channels. I admit – the hype has worked it’s magic and I will be taking a trip to my local Londis early Sunday morning to buy my copy of the Mail on Sunday.

The negativity surrounding Prince’s decision to give away his CD for free in what the Mail on Sunday calls “The World’s Greatest Newspaper Giveaway Ever”, has created what I would call an interesting intentional or unintentional publicity stunt.

There have been many stories and articles mentioning that Sony BMG in the UK is so upset with this move that they have “refused to handle the release”.

Music retailers in the UK are upset with the concept of giving away CDs for free in the paper, that this devalues music. Virgin is angry with HMV for deciding to stock the papers in their stores this Sunday.

This is certainly interesting dinner table conversation for music industry types. Going over the pros and cons of the move. Prince apparently wants to reach as many people as possible with his music – so at least his fans are happy.

(Update: I’ve listened to the CD – Read my review of Planet Earth!)

Watch Prince “Guitar” video preview:

From what I can hear from the “Guitar” single – so far the music sounds pretty cool to me.

Buy: Prince – Planet Earth on amazon.com.

Prince will be playing his 21-date “The Earth Tour” at the new O2 Arena in London beginning August 1st 2007. Apparently a copy of ‘Planet Earth’ will be included with each ticket sold for the O2 Arena dates.

Amoeba Music gave close to a thousand fans a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Sir Paul McCartney perform for free, last Wednesday night, June 27th, in Hollywood. Devout fans camped out for days to gain admittance into the store, coming from all over the United States and as far as Japan. Finally around 8:00pm, their prayers were answered as the ecstatic crowd entered the music-lover’s home to rousing cheers and applause from the Amoeba staff inside. The priceless appearance marked the rock icon’s first show in his nearly half a century career to take place in a record store. And Sir Paul chose Amoeba Music, already home to his life’s work, though now also home of a new milestone in his beyond legendary life story.

The night began with a special midweek charitable auction of gifts donated by Sir Paul – an autographed copy of his latest limited edition CD/DVD ‘Memory Almost Full’ and promotional poster, in addition to a signed lobby card from “A Hard Day’s Night.” One lucky fan paid $2,600 for the package, which coupled with Amoeba’s pledge to match all donations up to $1,000 dollars, yielded $3,600 in support of Hurricane Katrina rebuilding efforts.

As the ebullient fans crowded the aisles of CDs in anticipation, they were joined by Sir Paul’s mythic partner Ringo Starr and his wife Barbara Bach, George Harrison’s widow Olivia, Roy Orbison’s widow Barbara and a number celebrity fans such as Rick Rubin, Jeff Lynn, Alanis Morissette, Woody Harrelson, Rosanna Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Amoeba Records’ first signing Brandi Shearer. All were here to pay homage to rock’s greatest.

Then the modern day hero surfaced.

For close to ninety minutes, Sir Paul and his supporting band delighted fans, rocking through 21 songs – including “Drive My Car,” “Hey Jude,” “Let It Be,” “Here Today,” and “Back in the USSR” – culled from his vast repertoire with The Beatles, Wings and as a solo artist – leading up to the moment with a number of selections from his latest album. It was an amazing event, those fortunate enough to be present, will never forget – Sir Paul McCartney included. After a stirring rendition of “The Long and Winding Road” he said, “I’d like to take a little moment to take this all in. I was there. I was there at Amoeba.”

For the hundreds of millions of fans unable to be at Amoeba Music, in Hollywood, CA on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, they will be able to share the experience as footage from the event will be streamed on the Amoeba website (www.amoeba.com) and Sir Paul McCartney’s website (www.paulmcartney.com) in the coming weeks. In addition, with every purchase of the ‘Memory Almost Full’ CD at Amoeba, customers will receive a special limited edition 11×17 poster designed exclusively for the event while supplies last.

Amoeba Music is the world’s largest independent record store. They are dedicated to fostering a loyal community supporting the arts, freedom of expression and goodwill toward all. In their commitment, Amoeba Music sponsors every Saturday afternoon an auction of music memorabilia for local and global relief efforts such as Hurricane Katrina Rebuilding, Conservation International and the Sierra Club’s LA chapter. The event is hosted by comedian Brently Heilbron.

Members from Scottish band Biffy Clyro have been playing music together since 1995, releasing their debut album, ‘Blackened Sky‘ in 2002. With a steadily growing fan base and after releasing their fourth album ‘Puzzle’ this month, which entered the UK charts at number 2, it looks like their hard work is beginning to pay off in 2007.

Over the weekend Biffy Clyro was one of the lucky few to support Muse at the new Wembley Stadium in London. They’re now set to create quite a storm as they begin to introduce themselves and their music to more people during the busy summer festival season.

Big news for Biffy Clyro fans who may have thought the Muse gig was a big deal – which it was. It appears that was just a warm up. Biffy Clyro have announced that they will be supporting The Who at Marlay Park in Dublin, Ireland on June 29th 2007. Other big gigs for the band include the sold out Glastonbury Festival, Oxegen Festival and T in the Park as well as shows in the US and Canada.
