Family, friends and fans will join together for a special event at Humphreys in honor of San Diego native Carl Evans Jr., frontman of nationally acclaimed jazz band Fattburger on Sunday, February 10, 2008 from 6 pm to 12 am.

Evans is in the midst of some serious health challenges and all proceeds collected from the event will be donated to a Health Relief Fund in his name. Admission to the event is $12 and will feature performances by Ruby & the Red Hots, Jesse Davis, Barbara Jamerson, Mark Lessman, Reggie Smith, Janice Edwards, Jermoe Dawson, Darryl Williams, Glen Fisher, and many more of Carl’s friends.

“This event is not only a way to show support to Carl, but also a celebration of his incredible journey as an artist,” said Shauna Aguirre, Talent Buyer and Restaurant Manager at Humphreys. “Carl has been an important part of Humphreys for many years and we want to show him our support in this difficult time.”

One of contemporary instrumental music’s most popular mainstays since the dawn of what radio termed Smooth Jazz in the late 1980’s, Fattburger’s melodic and funky, blues and Latin spiced rhythm and jazz sound has helped both create and define the genre giving the band international fame. While many trends and new artists have come and gone in the last decade, Fattburger endures on the strength of what Evans calls “remaining true to ourselves, focusing on feeling rather than the latest sound.”

Humphreys is renowned for its live music every night of the week, unparalleled waterfront views and its top-notch cuisine. Executive Chef Paul Murphy has reinvented the menu at Humphreys giving the restaurant a New Attitude to compliment the chic refreshed look. The new menu features modern global cuisine with influences from around the world, including Asian, North African, American and more embellished by his classical French training.

ActionAid’s Bollocks to Poverty On Tour invites promoters, musicians, and other artists to put on events around the UK to highlight issues of global poverty and inequality.

So far it’s been a massive success – with club nights, comedy shows and high profile gigs right across the country – including the critically acclaimed Chalk in London and the now-famous Bollocks to Poverty Tent at the Reading festival.

Broccoli Music, the live promotions company responsible for electrifying band nights, Indiesexual and XFM Music: Response Live is supporting Bollocks to Poverty On Tour and creating a regular Bollocks to Poverty On Tour live music night in London. Bollocks to Poverty on Tour @ The Borderline in London will pull in some of the UK’s best bands, unsigned talent and special guest DJs to encourage young Londoners to get involved in the tour. All the profits from the night will go to ActionAid.

Bollocks to Poverty On Tour @ The Borderline kicked off on the 25th September with a fantastic line-up of unsigned bands – The Skallywags, Levelload, Chauffeur Driven Aviator and Joana and the Wolf – who performed to a packed out venue. Watch all the action from the night on the gallery section of our website.

Scores of the UK’s finest up-and-coming bands are clamoring to get on the bill…the next gig will involve The Krak, Parka, The Toy Guns and LR Rockets who will perform at Bollocks to Poverty On Tour at the Borderline Tuesday 5th February, 2008 with guest DJ set by The Plain Wrapper Babies…with your help we can make this one of the most exciting, exclusive and talked about live music nights in London.

By getting involved at a Bollocks to Poverty On Tour event you’ll be encouraging hundreds of individuals to get involved and take action against the causes of poverty. You’ll also help raise money for ActionAid at the same time.

Anthology will present two concerts to benefit Carl Evans Jr., the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Concerts Benefit for Carl Evans Jr., on Sunday January 20, 2008 in San Diego, California.

Carl Evans Jr., underwent surgery on December 10, 2007 to remove his left leg below the knee. This surgery was necessary to continue his ongoing battle against Diabetes. A founding member of the Grammy nominated band Fattburger, he’s been a beloved and highly respected member of San Diego’s jazz community for the past 30 years and has sat in on piano regularly with the Anthology House Band. The benefit concert is a combined effort of Anthology, San Diego’s acclaimed new live music venue, and 17 of San Diego’s finest jazz musicians. They are producing the concerts to help offset some of the medical expenses and future care for Evans. Anthology is donating the venue, and the all-star artist ensemble is contributing their performances.

Headlining the events will be internationally acclaimed saxophone artist Charles McPherson, super bass man Nathan East, leading jazz and Latin trumpeter Brian Lynch, recording artist trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and keyboardist-composer-producer Rob Whitlock.

Ticket prices range from $25 to $38. Tickets for the concerts can be purchased through Anthology directly at the Anthology Box Office, online at www.AnthologySD.com and by phone at 619.595.0300.

Carl Evans Jr.

The musical progeny of former Navy Band master and accomplished saxophonist Carl Evans Sr. and mother Clara Lovelace, a gospel singer and choir director. Carl Evans Jr. is one of the country’s most acclaimed jazz pianists. Carl moved to San Diego at age five.

He was awarded a football scholarship to the University of San Diego High School playing as a defensive lineman. It took Evans one year of playing football to decide to change schools and attend Crawford High. “Football was great but Crawford had the best music program in the state. I played music with future luminaries Nathan East, Hollis Gentry III, Gunnar Biggs, Mel Goot, & Doug Robinson. I went from winning football awards to awards like Southwestern College Pianist Award.” Evans said. Evans graduated early from Crawford High School to begin touring with Barry White and through the years many others including Freddie Hubbard, Cannonball Adderley, Eddie Harris, Rufus Thomas, Anita Baker, Lionel Ritchie, Gerald Albright and Nathan East. He has recorded and produced over 25 CDs. He is the leader and co-founder of the internationally known, award-winning band “Fattburger” and has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

Above all of his accomplishments and awards Carl is one of the most respected and beloved musicians in the Jazz world!

Eclipse Sports & Entertainment announces today the inaugural, 18-city Survivor Celebration Tour – celebrating breast-cancer survivors and benefiting supporting organizations – will begin September 23rd 2007 in New York and end 23-days later October 15th in Los Angeles. The Tour will promote an inspirational Survivor Celebration music CD, a new social networking website for cancer survivors and a golf fundraiser program called Pink Scorecard Days.

In support of the coast-to-coast Tour, a pink and blue logo-wrapped RV will stop at dozens of locations including hospitals, festivals, college campuses, sporting events and shopping centers. The complete journey including survivor stories across America will be filmed for a DVD, the Survivor Celebration website and an inspirational documentary.

The three programs to be promoted by the Tour include:

* Survivor Celebration inspirational music CD featuring Marcus Johnson (jazz keyboardist); Rick Seratte (formerly of the rock group Foreigner); Aharon (Rock/Pop); contemporary artists Franki Love and Jon Waller; R&B artist Gordon Chambers; Jazz vocalist Allan Harris; Jazz artists Pamela Williams and Alan Hewitt and other gifted popular music artists. The CD will include 12 songs and retail for $14.99. In addition to the CD being inspirational for breast cancer survivors, a significant portion of the gross profit will benefit breast cancer survivor support programs.

* SurvivorCelebration.com is a website launching September 10th 2007 to inspire, educate and empower cancer survivors. The website will include social networking, links to nonprofits and companies serving families that are dealing with cancer and many other features to help people survive the disease and thrive in life.

* Swing for Survivors Pink Scorecard Days Golf Program. As an integral part of the Tour, A.J. Ali is personally taking part in a golf marathon by playing 360 holes at 20 courses during the 23 days to promote “Swing for Survivors Pink Scorecard Days.” In each city, 12 local golfers and two celebrities will have an opportunity get on the tee with A.J. Ali to help promote the program and raise money for their favorite breast cancer charity. Through the program, golf courses can participate in an ongoing effort to help breast cancer survivors. Courses choose which months, weeks or days are Pink Scorecard Days. A Pink Scorecard will allow people who get pledges to play all day for one price on designated days. The golf courses agree to contribute a small referral fee per golfer to cover the program costs, enabling 100% of the pledge donations to go to breast cancer support organizations and survivors.

Created by breast-cancer survivor Jane Ali and her husband, Eclipse Sports & Entertainment CEO Ajom (”A.J.”) Ali, the Tour is working its way across America with a powerful goal: to educate, inspire and empower breast cancer survivors as well as friends and family affected by the disease.

The Tour schedule includes stops in the New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Charleston, Orlando, Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, Tulsa, Dallas, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Los Angeles areas. An exciting finish is planned in October at the tour’s Los Angeles stop, where the tour team, sponsors, volunteers and breast cancer survivors will celebrate the journey and its impact on breast cancer survivors throughout the U.S. Tour finale highlights include a concert at BB King’s in Los Angeles, a celebrity-pro-am golf tournament at The Riviera Country Club and several other high profile events.

National Tour sponsors to date include Under Armour, Dr. Travis Fox/Beat the Bogey Man, The Golf Nut Society and Xellent Swiss Vodka. Additional sponsor opportunities are available nationally and locally. Sponsors enjoy benefits including event hospitality, celebrity networking, event signage, brand exposure and goodwill.

Cancer Hits Home, A Personal Story

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today, according to the World Health Organization, with more than 213,000 women in the U.S. and 1.2 million worldwide diagnosed each year. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer during a woman’s life is approximately one in eight (roughly 13%), and it’s estimated close to 41,000 women will die of breast cancer this year.

It was A.J. and Jane’s close personal experiences with cancer, as well as A.J.’s passion for and knowledge of golf and cause marketing, that led to the creation of the Survivor Celebration Tour. Over the past 10 years, A.J. lost his father, brother, grandmother, grandfather, stepfather and several very close friends to cancer. Jane lost her mother to cancer-related complications. Jane, as well her daughter Amy and father Ted, recently survived battles with cancer, providing both A.J. and Jane with the inspiration to carry out the Foundation’s mission.

About The Marathon of Miracles Foundation

Money raised will benefit nonprofit organizations through the Marathon of Miracles Foundation (MOM). The MOM Foundation is a 501C3 nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire, educate and empower breast cancer survivors. The MOM Foundation’s long term goal is to help meet the financial, emotional, spiritual, physical and medical needs of survivors throughout the world and to open a retreat center in Malibu, California for Survivors and their families to experience all-expense-paid life-changing visits. The retreat center will embrace a holistic approach to surviving and thriving including equine therapy, natural remedies, environmental detoxification, healthy diet, mental and physical training, music, laughter, walks on the beach and other therapeutic activities.

More information about Live Earth and the bands playing at Wembley Stadium in London. Also Live Earth locations around the world: Hamburg, Germany, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tokyo, Japan, Shanghai, China, Antarctica, Johannesburg, South Africa, Sydney, Australia and Washington, D.C.

Live Earth is going to be the most talked about music event of the summer. I can say that with confidence, and there are many reasons why people will be discussing the worldwide concerts that will be taking place to help raise awareness about climate change and global warming. You could spend days debating the subject. For instance, the fact that Al Gore is the co-chair of Live Earth is just enough information to have caused a mass media feeding frenzy. Some people like the idea of Al Gore’s involvement, some people don’t and they all have their reasons for it.

Then there are the questions about the concert goers who will be traveling to the shows and all of the equipment that needs to get to the shows and the “carbon footprint” that the concerts will leave behind. Is it justifiable?

And of course with Live Earth founder Kevin Wall’s recent announcement of concert venue locations and headlining acts like Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers brings to light a fresh debate of more carbon footprints and is this hypocrisy?

Quite a few people that I’ve talked to about Live Earth think that rather than having only a handful of concert locations around the world for thousands of people to have to travel to, why not put on local gigs? To Think Globally, Act Locally, with local clubs set up to host a special Live Earth night.

Say for example, if Radiohead and Supergrass, two bands that happen to be from my town which is Oxford, were to announce that they are headlining Live Earth down the road at The Zodiac or the New Theatre for the locals – that would be brilliant. Of course this is just a hypothetical wish. Seriously though, have there been any local arrangements made throughout the towns and communities for Live Earth?

I obviously don’t have all the answers and am simply a bystander without a car, who has no plans to travel to the shows but will be happy to watch the Live Earth concerts either online or on TV. However, if there is a local event happening in Oxford, that would be a different story. I would be there with bells on.

Live Earth founder Kevin Wall has announced on LiveEarth.org that Madonna is to be one of the headlining acts set to perform at the upcoming Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London July 7th, 2007. In a bid to help raise awareness of climate change and to fight global warming, over one hundred bands and artists will be performing 24 hours of music across 7 continents for the Live Earth event.

If you want to go to the London concert at the new Wembley Stadium, it’s now time to start preparing to register. Live Earth organizers are buckling down on ticket misuse and because of the expected demand for tickets, it seems that they’re following Glastonbury’s lead and have incorporated a registration process for concert goers who want to buy tickets to Live Earth.

From the Live Earth Save Our Selves website:

“Free Registration for tickets opens at midday on FRIDAY, 13 APRIL 2007 and Live Earth ticket applicants are asked to register their details at: www.livenation.co.uk/liveearth

ALL TICKETS FOR LONDON WILL BE PRICED AT ?55 EACH”

Other bands and artists scheduled to perform at Wembley Stadium in London include: Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, Corinne Bailey Rae, Damien Rice, David Gray, Duran Duran, Foo Fighters, Genesis, James Blunt, John Legend, Keane, Madonna, Paolo Nutini, Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Terra Naomi, Spinal Tap, Kasabian, Metallica, The Pussycat Dolls and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Live Earth concert venues and locations will also be staged in Shanghai, China, Antarctica, Johannesburg, South Africa, Sydney, Australia, Giants Stadium, USA, Tokyo, Japan, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Hamburg, Germany and Washington, D.C..

If you didn’t know already, Al Gore is the co-chair for Live Earth and is also involved in organizing the events. There has been some controversy and skepticism about Al Gore and his green ambitions in the media and around the internet. It’s probably not too difficult to find mixed opinions by simply doing a search in Google.

I’ve also noted in a previous entry the irony of Al Gore and his current relationship with bands and music and that of his wife Tipper Gore and their involvement with the censorship of music via Tipper Gore’s PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) vehicle in the 80’s.

I would be curious to know if Madonna remembers that her song, “Dress You Up” was on the PMRC’s “Filthy Fifteen” list. The Filthy Fifteen was a list of fifteen songs that the PMRC found most objectionable. Maybe Madonna sees Live Earth as more important than what went on with the PMRC.

Time must have healed some old wounds or maybe the bands and musicians have simply forgotten or don’t care about the PMRC and the Gores’ affiliation with it. Or it’s possible that the bands feel that spreading the word about climate change and global warming is more important and are willing to brush aside any hard feelings.

I think that it is important to raise awareness of climate change and to listen to the scientists who have been studying global warming. There are also many green and environmental blogs out there in the blogosphere currently discussing green issues like TreeHugger, Hugg.com and the celebrity green gossip blog Ecorazzi.

The Live Earth concerts will be streamed online live on 7/7/07 at LiveEarth.MSN.com.

The concerts will also be broadcast on the BBC in the UK and on more than 120 networks around the world.

According to the BBC, UK Live Earth TV Schedule and start times: Jonathan Ross will present for BBC 2 starting at 1:00pm BST. The start time for the London Wembley concerts is 1:30pm BST. Graham Norton and Edith Bowman will also be hosting the Live Earth festivities on BBC 2 along with David Shukman, Roger Harrabin and Kate Silverton. There’s more behind the appropriately named cd than meets the eye though, as it’s to benefit the charity organization The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music.

The mission statement on the Strummerville website states:

“Following Joe Strummer’s untimely passing, his family and friends have launched Strummerville a charitable foundation for the production of new music.

The main aim of Strummerville is to provide rehearsal space and studio time to individuals, groups and organisations to enable the production of music by creative young people who would otherwise be preventing from doing so simply because they lack the necessary funds.

Our ultimate aim is to have ‘Strummerville’ studios in key locations around the world.”

The Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music is a great idea and is very much needed here in the UK and around the world as the mission states. Music is a way of life and has become, or maybe has always been, somewhat of a necessity for a lot of people. Because of that some *not all* studios will take advantage and charge more money than necessary for musicians to record their music. Of course home studios and the use of recording software such as apple’s GarageBand are great alternatives for recording music, but those aren’t always the easiest path for some to take. There’s nothing better than to walk into the studio and have a knowledgeable engineer and good equipment available during the recording process.

How ironic that there are companies out there making millions selling products that play music for consumers to hear like stereo systems, mp3 players, studios making thousands to record music etc., and yet there are so many musicians out there who are creating the music for the consumers’ enjoyment, but are struggling through life just trying to make ends meet.

Strummerville is an important step to making more people aware that bands and musicians need help to create and to record the music that we all want to hear!

“The Saints Are Coming” is a song new to my ears but Dave, being the punk that he is, made it very clear from the start that the Green Day and U2 collaboration is a cover by scottish punk band The Skids, which was originally released in 1978. The video for the song is now playing constantly here in the UK and I can see why some might find it a bit controversial. Politics aside, there are also rumblings around the internet about the cover itself and whether or not U2 and Green Day do the song justice.

I like both versions and I think it’s great not only that they’re helping out the musicians in New Orleans, but U2 and Green Day are also putting the spotlight back onto The Skids as well as punk music itself – which mainstream radio and the industry tends to ignore.

Hellset Orchestra vocalist Michael Wetherburn shall be joining the mighty instru-metalists The Legion of Doom in an evening of celebration of the great Freddie Mercury. Freddie would have been 60 this week and to toast this occasion the said performers will be playing a variety of Queen’s greatest compositions.

The peformance takes place on Sat 9th Sept at the Old Angel in Nottingham.

Support shall come from Old Basford and The Legion of Doom who will also perform a set of their own material. It’s £4 to get in and all money goes to Save the Children.

Doors 8pm.

Sounds like a great gig! It’s good to see events taking place in memory of the late great Freddie Mercury and Michael Wetherburn is one of the best frontmen I’ve seen perform here in England along with his band The Hellset Orchestra.

Check out their website and superb tunes by following this link: www.thehellsetorchestra.co.uk
