MC Mr Bruce and DJ/producer Mr Chuckles, who collaborate to make Hip Hop for the 1930s, Big Band music for the 2010s. Splicing swing samples with squelchy synths over dusty drum loops, they’ve depicted a modern-day journey into a time of rogues, lust, affordable clowns and foot-tapping toe curling “get your brogues on” dance floor swing hop.
Kate Tempest is already a seasoned and prolific lyricist and live performer, and Sound of Rum are undoubtedly one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the UK live hip-hop and spoken word scenes yet.
It will also be a reminder of just how many vibrant live music venues do actually operate in this location.

A wristband system will be used enabling music fans to move between venues seeing as many different bands as they want. Chart-topping acts will rub shoulders with breaking new bands, and up and coming talent will find themselves sharing stages with the finest singer-songwriters around.
Photo: Barefoot Confessor

The combination of live bands – Thursday 27th August, 2009 – including the exquisite Life In Film – the Confession Booth, the Bloody Awful Poetry Art Gallery, the Bloody Awful Poetry DJs and the world famous (seriously) Bloody Awful Poetry Competition – plus some surprises – is irresistible!

Live bands:

Barefoot Confessor
The new London band on the tip of a lot of tongues right now. They don’t profess to being part of any scene, they’ve just quietly got on with doing what they do best, penning excellent songs, and they are clearly enjoying exciting times. With a strange mix of the quirkily complex and unbelievably catchy pop, they’re a thinking man’s guitar band, but don’t fall into shoegaze, rather their intelligence is met by their musical panache, making a sound that you can recline from, drawing from your pipe at the back of the venue, or gallop forwards and dance your inhibitions away to.

“…early days for a sure-to-be-huge group…” – Red Stripe.net.

Barefoot Confessor MySpace

Kill It Kid
From the nourishing springs of Bath come the John Parish-approved ragtime-inspired purveyors of bruised blues. Kill It Kid take their name from a command on a Blind Wille McTell recording, which gives some idea of the swampy delta blues the five-piece conjure up. A vibrant blend of The White Stripes, barn dances and the sort of Stefan Grapelli-like fiddle-frenzy jazz/blues which might have formed the musical interlude on Pebble Mill At One. Truly majestical stuff which will be seeping through every pore of every radio DJ by the end of the year. Catch them now!

“Uncontrived, Kill It Kid are brave, raw talent” – BBC Newsbeat ‘Introducing’ March 09.

“The Bristol band … boast one of the most devisive sounds around. Following in the likes of Anthony Hegarty and Wild Beats, KIK’s main man Chris Turpin has a deep and rich voice that will entice and enthrall as well as create confusion aplenty. We think it’s beautiful and hope you do too” – Gigwise.

Kill It Kid MySpace

Life In Film
Hailing from Hackney, this truly exquisite four-piece demonstrate ability to pen perfectly crafted pop, yet manage to maintain a substantial amount of uniquness. The tunes themselves could come from any decade since the Sixties, such is their vast appeal; yet it’s the delicate use of the instruments, including a glockenspiel, and the controlled emotion in every vocal that gives them their independence and really sticks to the brain membrane. It’s sweet. It’s catchy. It’s clever. It’s perfect.

“Life In Film could well be the next great British band to emerge” – The Beat Surrender.

“London’s Life In Film are of that new ‘bar has been raised’ breed.” – The Independent, Band Of The Week.

Life In Film MySpace

With sets from BAP DJs That Perfect Fumble, This Handsome Devil and Micky Blue plus guest DJs Sam Campari and Ro Sham Beau: spinning the best in New Indie, Electro, Retro and Hip Hop.

“One of London’s top indie nights” – The Guardian Guide.

“A fantastic night of indie, electro and retro … it’s chock full of cool cats, fashionistas and more sexy fellas in skinny jeans than you can shake a quivering stick at!” – QX Magazine.

Tonight’s headliners: A.Human
Dalston-based A.Human tell stories about the damned, the lost, the strange and everything in between. Vintage keyboards punctuate soaring triggered samples whilst rolling drums make an epic backdrop to wry and amusing lyrics. Influences range from the art school originality of Talking Heads to the thoughtful dance music of New Order. Chaotic, unpredictable and frantic are some of the words to describe their live performance, but you must see them for yourself!

Their debut album ‘Third Hand Prophecy’ (2008) was heralded as a masterpiece by the British media, included in the year’s round-up of ‘6 Albums You Should Download’ Sunday Times Style, and number 4 in the ‘Top 10 Albums of the Year’ in the Independent.

They cemented their success at the summer’s most high profile festivals including Glastonbury, Dot to Dot, Lovebox and a residency at Ibiza Rocks, with ground breaking and unique shows creating a benchmark for live acts.

A.Human on MySpace

“The new hope for live dance music … surreal electronic nursery rhymes-cum-seedy social tales” – The Guardian

“Simply it’s fantastic; a really tough, dirty synth-led electro rock brute and you’ll be all the better for adding it to your collection, you can trust me on that one” – Room Thirteen

“Frontman Dave Human’s voice is cool, dark and addictive. [Third Hand Prophecy is] An extremely mature – and wonderfully different – debut album” – Camden New Journal

Plus more live bands – to be announced.

With sets from BAP DJs That Perfect Fumble, This Handsome Devil and Micky Blue spinning the best in New Indie, Electro, Retro and Hip Hop.

“One of London’s top indie nights” – The Guardian Guide

“A fantastic night of indie, electro and retro … it’s chock full of cool cats, fashionistas and more sexy fellas in skinny jeans than you can shake a quivering stick at!” – QX Magazine

Photo: Hooligan Night

Get into the mood for a mad, minx-y March with Dirty Little Secret at Madame JoJo’s, London! It’s a perfect match when three hot bands line up with three of the UK’s wildest and wickedest burlesque vixens, igniting the stage in a burst of decadence and downright dirty rock ‘n’ roll fun!

On Wednesday 4th March, 2009, the bands are too hot to handle, and the burlesque babes are so sexy they’ll make your eyes water!

Opening:

The Gutter Bravados performing with Kiki Kaboom

London fourpiece The Gutter Bravados kick off the show in style. Heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen, The Smiths, Warren Zevon and The Replacements, they bring rock ‘n’ roll with a swagger and a smile. Lead singer Cash Teran has been described as “a demented Morrissey meets Joan Jett”. These guys will set the stage on fire and provide a throbbing frenzy of sound.
www.myspace.com/gutterbravados

Kiki Kaboom
Cheeky Kiki is a charming striptease starlet with an irreverent, wicked sense of humour. Her characters Chavarella and Asbo Girl are fast becoming comic burlesque legends. Sexy, sassy Kiki Kaboom rocks the room!
www.myspace.com/kiki_kaboom

Second act:

Hooligan Night performing with Ruby Blues

Very special guests for this slot are Hooligan Night, who describe themselves as ‘Glam-Stompin’, Guitar-Twangin’, Blues-Howlin’, Cock-Rocking, Bad-Mouthing, Glitter-Trailing, Velvet-Purring, Electro Gutter-Trash’. The brainchild of delinquent showgirl Ruby Blues and production maestro Nik Diezel; they met while working on a freak show (true!), and were joined by Alabama 3 keyboard player Orlando Harrison and Stereo MC’s drummer Owen Rossiter. Their infectious, genre-bending sound of bass-driven beats and killer hooks accompanies vivid, sleazy tales of the dark side of city life: strange love, urban voodoo, dances with drag queens … Fabulous vocalist/lyricist Ruby Blues will perform her own gorgeous brand of electro-burlesque, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. It’s about to get very noisy …
www.myspace.com/hooligannight

Headliners:

The Imperial Vipers performing with Kitty Bang Bang

The ‘Vipers’ swaggering and gritty rock ‘n’ roll has already won them a legion of fans. Ripping out tunes that fall somewhere between Soundgarden and The Clash, their music and live performance is pure street rock. Fresh from touring with Hanoi Rocks who loved their “energy and passion”, they’ve been acclaimed by the rock media including Kerrang! who described them as “an authentic shit-kicking rock ‘n’ roll band with the potential to cause structural damage.”
www.myspace.com/imperialvipers

Kitty Bang Bang
The sensual, sizzling Kitty is so good she’s taken up residence in the house of Dirty Little Secrets, lighting up the stage with her quirky, sexy style, a perfect partnership with the ‘Vipers. Be warned – tonight’s electrifying finale could actually bring the house down!
www.myspace.com/burlesquekitty

Special guest Dougie Anderson (T4) is back in the DJ booth by popular demand and from 11.30pm the Dirty Little Disco takes you into the early hours with classic dirty disco/rock ‘n’ roll hits!

An explosion of raw, satanic rock ‘n’ roll power will light up Madame JoJo’s when the astounding Jim Jones Revue launch their new single on March 5, 2009. The sheer visceral punch of their live show makes this one of the year’s most sizzling hot tickets!

The internationally-acclaimed Jim Jones Revue is the former Thee Hypnotics and Black Moses leader’s five-piece rock’n'roll outfit. In 2008 they made a dynamic debut with their eponymous album, which succeeded in capturing the amazing Jim Jones in full-on, manic flight.

The new single “The Cement Mixer” b/w “Good Golly Miss Molly” is the second release from the album, unleashing a Hammond hurricane from powerhouse keyboardist Elliot Mortimer. Guitarist Rupert Orton’s rama-lama-lamming adds to the psychotic mayhem while bassist Gavin Jay and drummer Nick Jones rocket along at the back.

And that’s just the record! Their incendiary live show is an unholy, howling fusion of influences: Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Hendrix, Hasil Adkins, The Sonics, MC5, Elvis, with Jones screaming and hollering like Gerry Rosalie one minute and Lux Interior the next, over songs straight out of the Sun, Chess and Specialty stables. All five musicians are at the top of their game.

The Jim Jones Revue is carrying the torch for ‘proper’ rock ‘n’ roll – dirty, forceful and utterly irresistable!

“If Little Richard had written this, he’d still be boasting about it today ****” – Mojo Magazine

“Like The Killer smoking the bones of Link Wray” – Album of the year #10, Big Cheese Magazine

“… extraordinary debut … the ear-searing, over-cranked sonic savagery of The Jim Jones Revue makes for a breathless listening experience … the JJR positively redefine raw, untamed, born-with-a-tail rock ‘n’ roll” – Classic Rock Magazine

Australian garage rock fourpiece based in London. Started by brothers Kit and Jay Atkinson they recently released their debut album, ‘Primitive Tales’, which reflects their commitment to creating straight, honest rock ‘n’ roll. The punk roots of The Saints and the rock riffs of The Stooges go to make up passionate rock ‘n’ roll delivered in a tight, economic package.

Thursday 5th February, 2009 launches the explosive second album of rock vixens and cosmic boogie babes, the magnificent Priscillas! With rock solid support by Camden’s power punks The Vinyl Stitches, this promises to be a sensational show, bringing together a glorious collision of genres, from New York to Holloway Road!

The Mighty Boosh, Jay Kay, Shane McGowan, Franz Ferdinand, The Cramps, The Damned, Sky Saxon and designer Anna Sui may not often agree on things, but they have all declared their love for cult favourites The Priscillas and their unique brand of milkshake punk. Their second album ‘10,000 Volts’ is out on Nag’s Head Records on 2nd February, and is sure to make your ears pop.

Their first album was a retro slice of bubblegum pop, a John Waters-style Rocky Horror Show for the ears. It spawned two sell-out singles which made their mark on Radio One, BBC 6Music and XFM; Topshop voted a Priscillas video in their top 40 of the year; and in the US they guested on the radio show of Little Steven of Springsteen’s E-Street Band and The Sopranos, plus sessioning for WFMU in New York. The cult was growing …

With the new album, the band move on, embracing a wide range of different influences. While respecting their ‘leader of the pack’ ethics, powerpop, disco, 70s New York, indie-pop and mariachi all collide to make a unique genre mix of blazingly catchy pastiche and vibrancy. Singing about “Jimmy in a Dress” or “gonna rip up your photograph”, these ladies know how girl/boy really works. The album has been given the once-over by producers Andy Chatterley (Kanye West, Pussycat Dolls, Kylie, The Kills) and Marc Waterman (Ash, Elastica) in the girls’ mission to successfully channel those influences into their own unique sound.

Strong women know what they want, and this time round, the girls are joined by of all things … a boy. Phil Martini, ex-Tokyo Dragons drummer, is a brave sticksman to deal with this cacophony of super heroines, catwomen, go-go dancers and superstars. Frontwoman Jenny Drag, a New Jersey feline of a chanteuse, prowls the stage like a panther, clad in a catsuit that would give Pussy Galore palpitations. And a strong diva needs a strong team to back her up. Norwegian guitar goddess Guri Go-Go may look like a B-movie kitten, but her mega-tight guitarwork suggests otherwise. Native Brit, Kate Kannibal’s twist on melodic basslines kick as hard as her legs do on stage. Lucky Phil!

All this excitement won’t surprise you if you’ve seen The Priscillas live. Aside from their deliciously playful charisma, the tunes carry cosmic boogie with unmitigated raunch to create a stunning live show. Stripping sensations from Blondie, Abba and Queen, the ensemble triumph on stage in taut, razor-sharp, rocking shows that have thrilled at Glastonbury, Leeds Carling Weekend, Bestival and Lost Vagueness. They have played with kindred spirits such as Art Brut, The Cramps, The Damned and The 5-6-7-8s.

“Near perfect power-pop” – NME
“There’s a new breed of girl groups on the scene … The Priscillas exude B-movie glamour” – Vogue
“Hotly tipped, all-girl rock n rollers” – The Independent
“They’re The Cramps, The Shangri-Las and the New York Dolls all rolled into one.” – Kerrang!
“A purring, shrieking, shimmying torment of riff-fuelled fun … demand[s] to be heard” – Metro
“All bubblegum boogie and juke-joint jive” – I-D
“The quartet displays an innate pop sensibility that beats at its frothy core” – Julian Marszalek

Special Guests: The Vinyl Stitches

Coming out of Camden with their high energy Stooges-style Sixties garage rock, the Vinyl Stitches are perfect support for headliners The Priscillas. Two boys called Jean Claude and Vinny and two girls called Sam and Evy, create an orgy of foot-stomping noise to soundtrack an imaginary psych-ploitation film.

White Heat continues their tradition of presenting bands that have members that’ve been in other bands that have played for White Heat …

Ex-Test-Icicle Rory Brattwell’s doom-children Kasms make a noise like Sonic Youth and X-Ray Spex being squashed into a washing machine and thrown down a flight of stairs, their female-fronted shriekbeat likely to obliterate your eardrums and shatter your bones.

With voodoo stomp, screeching guitars, surreal blues and vocalist Rachel Callaghan’s spooked, shuddering howling and wailing, expect a full complement of show stopping punk goth anthems.

“Kasms are thoroughly entertaining even on a bit of an off day” – Artrocker

About White Heat
“London’s infamous Art Rock Disco” was launched in 2003. Its band list is a Who’s-Who of independently-minded music since the turn of the century, including: British Sea Power, Good Shoes, Test-Icicles (first London show), Foals (first show), Bloc Party, Blurt, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, The Horrors, The Klaxons, Chrome Hoof, Mystery Jets, The Kills, Liars, Lightspeed Champion and Alex Turner.

Guest DJs have included Jarvis Cocker, Steve Mackey (Cavemen, Pulp), CSS and Steve Aoki as well as hosting label nights by Rough Trade, Young Turks (XL), Young and Lost and Brille. Constantly introducing new bands and underground cult favourites, DJs Matty & Olly keep it innovative, inventive, ever-changing and above all a hell of a lot of fun. White Heat is living proof that independent music culture can still thrive outside the mainstream.

White Heat at Madame JoJo’s in Soho, London on Tuesday 6th January, 2009 includes acts Screaming Tea Party, Snowman, Ergo Proxy and the White Heat DJs.

More about the bands:

Screaming Tea Party

London based trio Screaming Tea Party create a genuinely eclectic mix of boy/girl Anglo-Japanese shout-pop, classic three-minute post-punk, new-wave groove, surf guitar and psychedelia, all performed with youthful exuberance and the falsetto backing vocals of singing drummer Nell. Guitarist Niiyan is an exceptional musician as well as visually arresting, wearing a gas-mask and often ending gigs only wearing his pants.
” … at times Screaming Tea Party are like a force of nature – exactly the kind of band you’d love to be stuck in a tiny little venue on a Saturday night with” – www.clickmusic.com.
“Our latest tip for world domination” – NME.

Snowman

Icelandic Olga, Indonesian Aditya, Italian Ross and British Joe created their band in Perth, Australia, and over three albums have established themselves as bent on carving their own path. Their 2008 move to London coincided with their remarkable third album, ‘The Horse, The Rat and the Swan’. Their music walks a fine line, with masterfully layered songs, countering shuddering guitar noise, amplifier feedback, and shouting with melodic backing vocals, occasional keyboard and violin, and an ocean of reverb. Influence can be detected here and there: from King Crimson to the Birthday Party and early Bad Seeds to the Atlantics to Bowie to the Pop Group, but it all adds up to a unique whole.

Pictured: The Bleeps

Dirty Little Secret is a live rock and burlesque night, the two worlds colliding to ignite the stage in an explosion of decadence and downright dirty rock ‘n’ roll fun. Three bands will perform together with three burlesque performers, chemistry made in heaven creating a feast for the senses.

What’s the Dirty Little Secret? It’s the mystery headline band, only revealed on the night, when they will perform with Miss Trixee Sparkle at the top of the bill.

The inaugural show, set to take place Wednesday 1st October, 2008 at Madame Jojo’s in Soho, London, presents a superb lineup of beautiful vixens and young lords of pop, with special guest DJ The Buzzcocks’ Chris Remington.

First band: The Bleeps performing with Kitty Bang Bang

The Bleeps
This Essex garage-pop two-piece has been compared to Beck and The Beastie Boys, making enough noise to fool you into thinking there’s ten of them. With tonight’s sizzling burlesque partner, the chemistry will be explosive!
“Anyone who’s seen The Bleeps live will know what a treat they are. Bringing a sound which is seemingly both lo-fi and complex, it always seems impressive that there’s just two of them” – Artrocker.
“Massive drums, wired guitars and dirty bass … spectacular two-minute blast of post-Pixies pop.” – Rough Trade.
www.myspace.com/thebleeps

Kitty Bang Bang
Kitty is a very foxy lady indeed – expect a spine-tingling performance of unadulterated sensuality.
www.myspace.com/burlesquekitty

Second band: Men and Gods performing with Vicky Butterfly

Men and Gods
This experimental four-piece has quite a pedigree: front man Marc Eden, after working with Slash was described by him as “one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll singers I have ever heard”. Men and Gods practise some strange musical voodoo on the entranced crowds watching them. It’s powerful stuff, and tonight’s performance with Miss Butterfly is guaranteed to be memorable.
www.myspace.com/menandgods

Vicky Butterfly
Once seen, you will never forget the exquisite Vicky Butterfly, a Carnival Queen with a show-stopping 17″ corseted waist; she is a doll, a butterfly, a peacock, a swan, a silver-screen siren, a living Klimt painting, a sorcerer; fusing old-school glamour with the surreal as well as a modern sense of fun. A trained visual artist, her costumes are surpassingly beautiful, and her background in ballet, tap, circus, drama and opera explains her extensive repertoire and skills as a dancer.
“She has the extraordinary curves, the bee-waist and ripe thighs of a Regency poule de luxe crossed with a Bettie Page vixen’s face” – Marina O’Loughlin, Metro.
“A real innovator … with a bewitching dose of fairy-tale surrealism that stands her sharply apart from the crowd.” – Metro.
“Already threatening to achieve legendary diva status, this classic, mysterious siren is leaving us breathless.” – Bizzarre Magazine.
www.myspace.com/missvickybutterfly

Headline band: Mystery band performing with Trixee Sparkle

Trixee Sparkle
Pure bump ‘n’ grind showgirl dazzle, Trixee will be lighting up the stage tonight with irresistable sauciness, tongue firmly in cheek, the perfect partner for the headlining band – (almost) all will be revealed on the night!

Pictured: HeartsRevolution

On Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 White Heat at Madame Jojo’s in Soho, London is to feature a special 1AM show by New York’s HeartsRevolution + guest DJ from LA – Franki Chan of Iheartcomix and more.

Live band lineup:

Black Affair
Black Affair is the new band of Steve Mason of Beta Band fame. The end of the Beta Band was a blow for lovers of genuinely progressive British music; its experimentalism, however, is brought into new areas by Black Affair and the results are original and soulful. Steve Mason’s renowned love of hip-hop creates something remarkable, with eerie horror-film synths meeting with staccato percussion, all with an enigmatic 80’s flavour and an amazing mechanical sheen. It’s ambitious, inspired music. “It veers towards the sinister soundscaping of Depeche Mode and the synth-addled tendencies of The Human League” – Drowned in Sound.
www.myspace.com/blackaffair

The Oscillation
Drone hypno electronic rockers The Oscillation take shoegaze, krautrock and plenty of other influences and make something else. The brainchild of multi instrumentalist and producer Demian Castellanos, The Oscillation has risen out of the ashes of the critically acclaimed Orichalc Phase (two 12″ only releases for DC Recordings in 2006). Having already worked with such luminaries as producer Tim Holmes from Death In Vegas, as well as a new forthcoming project with a member of Chrome Hoof, Castellanos’ position amongst the cream of the UK’s music fraternity will seem inevitable to anyone who hears The Oscillation.
www.myspace.com/theoscillations

HeartsRevolution (1am show)
New York boy and girl electronicas HeartsRevolution have an unusual take on promotion as they enlist a refurbished ice cream truck, known as HeartsChallenger, to serve as a kitsch store, transportation and record label HQ all in one go. Currently very hot in electronic circles partly due to their split single with, and resemblance to, the wildly popular Crystal Castles.

New Generation Superstars
Another recipient of KKKKK from Kerrang. Unmissable live, they not only hit the radar, they smash it to bits, playing at home and away with the likes of Love/Hate, Ginger Wildheart and LA Guns. Their debut album ‘Crash Course in Rock n Roll’ was laid down in an amazing four days and produced by Grammy-nominated Alan Smyth (Artic Monkeys/Pulp). NGS have the swagger of a bare-knuckled street fighter and the rawness of early Guns N’ Roses. Singer AJ has ‘Superstar’ tattooed across his stomach. He’s not wrong!

Riot:Noise
This Bristol band have gone from sellout shows in their hometown, to coveted support slots with Electric Eel Shock, Young Heart Attack, Electric 6, Dirty Sweet and Stone Gods amongst others. June saw their debut single ‘Never Wrong’ – receiving rave reviews in the music press and instantly play-listed on almost every major rock station – including Total Rock, Kerrang! and BBC’s ‘Introducing’.
“Sitting on the grittier side of sleaze, next to masters of that guitar sound from the gutter like Backyard Babies and the young Guns N’ Roses, this is boisterous, ballsy and heavy stuff” – Bubblegum Slut.
“Debauched bunch of rock n roll scoundrels … packing a punch of infectious dirty rock” – Rock Sound.

Trashtown Thrillers
South Coast pirates with a manic stage presence and high octane set of punk and scuzzy blues numbers. After their debut EP ‘My Ship is Sinking (So I’ll Have Yours), 2008 saw the release of their ‘A Red Rose and a Shotgun Kiss’ getting them airtime and ultimately shows with Tygers of Pang Tang, Crazy Lixx and Hardcore Superstar. Prepare to be kidnapped and converted to Trash ‘n’ Roll.
Missy, Helenia and Miss Mimi Martini are inked, pierced, stretched and modified to the max. They’re daredevils, living on the edge and they don’t give a ****. They’re hot, sexy and full of attitude and they’re the new Paradise City showgirls. If you got the balls, they’re up for dares. Black Sabbath said it first – The M.O.B. Rules!

Pictured: MissOddKidd

Bloody Awful Poetry has gathered a legion of followers and despite the title, they are a happy band. They’re back at Madame Jojo’s for their September night, Thursday 11th September, 2008, which includes:

Live Bands (see below); Bloody Awful Poetry DJs; Confession Booth; The Bloody Awful Poetry Art Gallery; The Bloody Awful Poetry Competition (send your submissions); Free Giveaways – and more!

Live bands:

Akala
Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley, 24, has emerged from London’s hip hop underground as one of the leaders of a new British artistic renaissance. In 2006 he won the Best Hip hop MOBO award for his debut album ‘It’s Not A Rumour’. Since then Akala has rocked live spots on Radio 1 and warmed up for artists as diverse as Jay-Z, Christina Aguilera and Richard Ashcroft. At the same time he has toured his acclaimed live show not only across the UK, but as far afield as Nigeria and Vietnam, where he performed the first ever hip hop show in the country’s history at the behest of the British Council.
“Akala offers a spirited corrective to mainstream hip hop’s directionless excess” – Mojo.
“Smart, addictive and right on the mark” – The Independent.
“Startingly affective” – The Guardian.
“Possessed of an intense lyrical flow” – The Times.

Ezra Bang & Hot Machine
On first look, it’s Grace Jones doing Rage Against The Machine, on closer inspection it appears to be Spank Rock fronting Public Enemy. But it’s soon apparent that it’s neither. This is ‘Gorilla Funk’.
“If Public Enemy had swamped their raps with buzzing synths, they’d sound like Ezra Bang & Hot Machine” – Loud and Quiet.
“After a few blasts of tracks like ‘Knuckle Up’ and ‘Roc Steady’, we reckon we could be persuaded” – Disorder Magazine.
“… a good, if somewhat scary show” – Gay.com.
“An extremely camp version of Chuck D gyrating his way through a rap set” – The Guardian.

MissOddKidd & Dekker
Gobby and photogenic, MissOddKidd touts pared-down, clattering electro flavoured with her estuary English raps, while Dekker brings hypnotic and dark synth stabs.
“Doing exactly what it says on the tin, rhymer MissOddKidd delivers music that is unlike anything else you’ve heard in a hot minute” – RWD Magazine.

Plus Bloody Awful Poetry DJs: That Perfect Fumble, This Handsome Devil and Micky Blue; spinning the best in Indie, Electro and Retro.

Pictured: Melodica, Melody & Me

Bukkake is shaping up to be one of London’s most forward-thinking electronic nights, with an ambience of all things dark and moody: an arcade-esque environment with projections of anime, cult films and computer games. Driving forces are IDM ‘Intelligent Dance Music’ (think early Aphex Twin), Ambient, Minimal Techno and Dubstep, Japanese animation and cult science fiction.

Live bands set to play Bukkake at Madame Jojo’s, London Wednesday 10th September, 2008:

My Panda Shall Fly
(IDM/Electronica/Dubstep)
Sample-heavy, ambient-toned dream popsters with a unique combination of beats, wailing and guitar.

Melodica, Melody & Me
Young, exuberant folk sextet from South London: performing intricate, skanky, foot stomping folk.

Benin City
(Spoken word/Performance/A’capella/Funk)
London fivepiece whose buzzword is ‘Spoketronica’.
“Benin City mash up experience, fun and wisdom into a melting pot of afrobeat, hip hop and jazz that will make you laugh and cry while shaking your booty … have dazzled as guests on my Xfm X-Posure show.” – John Kennedy, Xfm.

Pictured: Jonquil

The lineup for Tuesday 16th September, 2008 at Madame Jojo’s, London is a White Heat classic.

Headlined by the enchanting Jonquil and fellow Oxford band This Town Needs Guns, this is a night out not to be missed! Acts also include Three Trapped Tigers and White Heat Djs Matty and Olly.

More about the bands:

Jonquil

An eclectic, experimental Oxford sextet.

“… a masterclass in how to purvey experimentalism without foregoing accessibility, and for that alone, Jonquil need to become huge” – Clash

“The times I’ve seen Jonquil play live, it’s been in tiny, intimate venues in Oxford and they’ve inspired these mass singalongs each time … it’s pretty special to watch” – Yannis Philippakis (Foals)

“A host of beautiful Beirut-gone-English folk songs” – NME

“Beautiful weirdness” – Metro

“… a tranquil and soothing listen with moments of euphoric chanting and the wonderful lapping of shifting harmonies and textures, and ever present thrill” – Notion

www.myspace.com/jonquiluk

This Town Needs Guns

Describing themselves as ‘new guerilla folk’ This Town Needs Guns specialise in intricate indie-rock that can recall everything from Seafood at their dynamic best to the grandiose noise mongering of Mogwai. Their album ‘Animals’ is out early October.

www.myspace.com/thistownneedsguns

Three Trapped Tigers

Rising electronica stars led by composer/producer Tom Rogerson’s burgeoning free jazz project.
