Eels’ ‘Hombre Lobo’ continues to garner critical praise

Appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live July 24th; featured on Weekend Edition and Fresh Air

Fresh on the heels of appearances on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” EELS will be featured on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” July 24, 2009 performing a track from their latest record, ‘Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire’, out now on Vagrant Records.

Released June 2nd, ‘Hombre Lobo’ debuted at #43 on the Billboard 200 chart surpassing the first week success of its predecessor. In addition to the “Weekend Edition” piece, Hombre Lobo was also featured in a review on NPR’s “Fresh Air” on July 9th.

Reviewer Ken Tucker says of lead singer Mark Oliver Everett (aka E), “Whether he sings in a growl meant to be heard over loud guitars or a high-tenor croon with more gently-strummed instruments, E is a sensitive soul, unafraid to sound yearning.”

Recently The New York Times named Hombre Lobo a “Critic’s Choice” while the Huffington Post raves that the record is “so sharply executed that it’s hard to compliment without outright fawning.” See more critical praise below.

EELS is the ever-changing project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett. The band’s first record since 2005’s critically acclaimed ‘Blinking Lights and Other Revelations’, ‘Hombre Lobo’ was recorded entirely at E’s studio in Los Angeles with Koool G Murder (bass, keyboards and guitar) and Knuckles (drums and percussion).

“I wanted to write a set of songs about desire,” says E. “That dreadful, intense want that gets you into all sorts of situations that can change your life in big ways.”

E has embarked on a number of projects since the release of 2005’s ‘Blinking Lights and Other Revelations’. In 2008 E published his acclaimed autobiography Things the Grandchildren Should Know. Also in 2008 the BBC-produced multiple-award winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary film about E and his quantum physicist father Hugh Everett III was broadcast on PBS’ “Nova” series in the U.S.

“All this time during the making of all these other projects, I was always writing and recording music,” says E. “Every time I branch out and try something else, I think it will be some kind of relief to take a break from music. But I always come back with my tail between my legs, because there’s nothing I enjoy more than making music. The other projects have been great experiences for me, but this is what I love to do.”

“Moody rock music with rough edges and tuneful melodies.” – NPR “Weekend Edition”

“Vividly sketched, with the EELS delivering muddy roadhouse rockers. The ballads really shine.” – Rolling Stone

“Like much of E’s work, the album is complicated. It’s both sad and uplifting, dark and humorous, and always worth picking up.” – Associated Press

“Mark Oliver Everett takes his latest album title quite seriously, unleashing predatory howls over distortion-ridden stompers.” – SPIN

“Lean and timeless” 4 stars – MOJO

“There are few songwriters who could handle this material better than E—actually, perhaps there aren’t any.” 4 stars – The Sunday Times

“So sharply executed that it’s hard to compliment without outright fawning.” – Huffington Post

Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives will air on NOVA (PBS) Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 8pm ET/PT.

For most of Mark Oliver Everett’s life, things didn’t add up. Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives follows Mark, better known as E, the lead singer of the band the EELS, across the country as he attempts to understand the fantastic possibility of parallel universes and unravel the story of his troubled family and the father he never really knew—iconoclastic quantum physicist Hugh Everett III.

Hugh Everett’s controversial Many Worlds theory, a startling interpretation of quantum mechanics, makes the astounding prediction that parallel universes are constantly splitting off from our everyday reality. At first derided, the theory has gained traction among some physicists. In this film, the wry and charismatic Mark embarks on a journey back into his father’s life, meeting his old friends and colleagues, and takes a crash course in the weird world of quantum mechanics in order to understand his father’s mind-blowing theory.

Last Sunday (March 23), I went to the New Theatre in Oxford for the Eels show. Before moving to England I didn’t know much about the Eels – even though the founder of Eels, Mark Oliver Everett, AKA E, is originally from Virginia and now LA. Here in England though, the handful of musicians that I’ve talked to about the Eels have not only heard of them, but really like them.

The New Theatre was the perfect venue for the show. Old school, multi level, plush seats. There are two public bars, but drinks aren’t cheap. One thing is for sure, though – they didn’t like cameras at this show. Every time a flash went off, the theatre staff would go running toward it! They had their work cut out for them that night.

Before the music started a film was shown – Mark Oliver Everett’s “Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives”, a documentary about his famous physicist father, the late Hugh Everett III. I skipped that because I had already seen it when it was originally screened on BBC Four back in November. I do recommend it though.

After the film, a full band set-up was displayed on the stage, so naturally I thought that E would be playing with a band. That wasn’t the case at all. Throughout the night it was just E and his band mate, introduced as “The Chet” (Jeffrey Lyster), who played and entertained, and it was funny watching them walk onto the stage dressed in matching mechanic jump suits, reminiscent of Mike Watt, Glastonbury 2007.

The quality of musicianship between the two is top notch. The Chet played guitar, piano, drums, pedal steel and my favorite of the night – the saw, played with a bow. I can’t believe the tone he was able to get out of it, and the wonderful vibrato, especially on “Bus Stop Boxer”.

E also went from piano, guitar and at one point when The Chet was on drums, E slowly slid behind the kit as The Chet slid out – while still playing. I remember from the “Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives” documentary that E was originally a drummer, so it made sense that he sounded great on the skins.

Eels fans may already be aware of the fact that Mark Oliver Everett has written a book, an autobiography entitled Things the Grandchildren Should Know. A couple times during the show they would stop playing and The Chet would stand up at a podium and read aloud excerpts from the book. It was a good idea, and the parts that he read were interesting, including the time when E first moved to LA and met Angie Dickinson while she was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When The Chet got up to read from the book for the second time, a heckler from the audience yelled out, “Tosser”! They handled it well, though, and made a joke about not knowing what “tosser” meant and that The Chet tosses a good salad. They got a good laugh from the audience.

They played songs from the ‘Meet The Eels’ and ‘Useless Trinkets’ albums, and toward the end of the show, the song that I’m most familiar with by Eels, their first single release from the late ’90s, “Novocaine for the Soul” (watch video). It was great to hear it live.

The Chet also had his turn on vocals as he played drums and sang on a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times”. Other songs included, “Strawberry Blonde”, “Souljacker Pt. I” and “Jeannie’s Diary”.

Eels US leg of the tour starts March 28, 2008 in Philadelphia. If you can, try and catch one of their shows. It was a great night of music and entertainment.

Mark Oliver Everett from the Eels has written a letter to Her Majesty The Queen, inviting her to one of his gigs – I mean – shows (somehow ‘gig’ seems inappropriate under these circumstances) at the Royal Festival Hall.

In the letter he mentions that the times the Eels have played at “your” Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, he didn’t think she was there, and that now he wants to change that.

I’m not sure…seems like a long shot, but you never know. Maybe the Queen will find out that E’s father was the famous Hugh Everett III, who was known for his controversial theory of quantum mechanics that predicts the existence of Parallel Universes. You never know, she might be into all that. I wonder if she would like the Eels?

Here’s the letter that E sent to the Queen:

Her Majesty The Queen
Buckingham Palace
London SW1A 1AA

January 31st 2008

Your Majesty,

My name is Mark Oliver Everett. My friends call me “E.” I am the singer in an American rock band called EELS. We will be playing a show at your Royal Festival Hall on the evening of February 25th and I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend our performance. We have played the Festival Hall several times and I’ve noticed that your royal box is usually empty. I’d like to change that. We have also played your Queen Elizabeth and Royal Albert Halls. I don’t think you were at those shows either.

I recently saw the movie “The Queen” and while I know that wasn’t actually you in the film, it made me think that I would like you as a person. I’d like you to be one of the people who call me “E.” If you’re free February 25th, please come down to the show. It’s sold out, but I would be happy to put you on the guest list. I also have a new book, Things The Grandchildren Should Know, and two new compact disc and DVD collections, Meet The EELS and Useless Trinkets. I think you’d enjoy them and I’d be happy to give you complimentary copies of each, which I will even sign for you after the show.

If you’re busy, I understand. But if you can free up your calendar, we’d love to see you there. Thank you for your time, Your Majesty.

Sincerely,

Mark Oliver Everett
aka E

It’s been a slow start this morning, after staying up until well past three in the morning here in England, watching the Patriots lose the Super Bowl. Boooo. I was so disappointed with the loss, I wondered why I bothered to stay up at all. Now I’m paying for it today. Not only that – I somehow managed to talk two other people into staying up and watching the game with me – and now they’re paying for it too, I owe them big time – and it wasn’t even worth it.

As far as the half-time show went, it was certainly a safe bet having Tom Petty on as the act. As expected, the band sounded good and played through a tame set of familiar hits like “American Girl”, “I Won’t Back Down”, “Free Falling” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream”. We were surprised to see the guitar player pull out the double necked electric at one point – but that’s about as risque as it got.

There was news a few days ago that Mark Oliver Everett – or “E” as he’s known – from the Eels was going to put on a one second ad during the Super Bowl for their upcoming album, ‘Useless Trinkets’. The ad was supposed to be of E saying the first letter of the new album title – the letter “U” and would have been the shortest TV ad ever used during the Super Bowl, at the cost of a mere $100,000.

I’ve just found out that it didn’t air, and E has stated, “In the end we were told that the NFL would have to find 29 other advertisers to buy 1 second spots to fill a standard 30 second advertising slot and that they do not sell advertising time by the second. They also noted that a rapid fire 30 second segment of thirty 1 second commercials could cause people with certain medical conditions to have seizures and that it was against network regulations.”

That’s too bad. The good thing, though, is that you can still see a video of the 1 second ad here, and a 5 second version here.

We were watching the game on the BBC in England, so this was the first time that I’ve ever watched the Super Bowl with no ads. Not even British ads this year, which was great. Especially since a lot of people in England don’t like watching the NFL because of all the ads.

Anyway, congrats to the NY Giants fans – it was a close game. Condolences go out to my fellow Pats fans!

Eels plan to make the shortest Super Bowl TV ad break ever! If it goes ahead I believe that the proposed one second advert for Eels’ new ‘Useless Trinkets’ album will be the shortest ever TV ad used during the Super Bowl.

The one second spot would feature Eels founder/frontman Mark Oliver Everett (A.K.A. “E“) saying the first letter of the new album title – the letter “U”.

Ad space during the SuperBowl on US TV is approximately $100,000 a second – the full ad, a whopping five seconds will be put up on YouTube following the game.

The Eels have announced more dates in the UK and Ireland on the back end of their European tour, which will come around to the UK again in mid-March 2008.

This announcement comes two weeks before the January 21st 2008 release of the Best of Eels rarities, ‘Meet The Eels: Essential Eels Vol. 1, 1996-2006′ and ‘Eels Useless Trinkets: B-sides, Soundtracks, Rarities, and Unreleased 1996 – 2006′ albums. The albums feature music recorded by the Eels over the course of their 10 year recording career, from their debut “Beautiful Freak” (released in 1996) to the more recent “Blinking Lights and Other Revelations”, as well as some rare gems that have never seen the light of day.

The albums will follow the release of a book written by Eels creator and front man Mark Oliver Everett (or ‘E’ as he’s more commonly referred to). The book, ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’, is out January 17th, 2008 and is a compelling, tragic, inspiring, original and very funny true story about a man who loses everyone he loves but somehow survives and learns to find joy in life again.

Pete Townsend describes ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’ as: “One of the best books ever written by a contemporary artist”.

Also look out for the repeat of ‘Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives’, the fantastic documentary the BBC filmed about E on his journey of discovery across America to learn about the father he never knew, Hugh Everett III, the quantum mechanic.

‘Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives’ will be aired again on January 22nd, 2008 on BBC 4 at 8pm GMT.

Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives follows the lead singer of US rock band Eels, Mark Oliver Everett (E), on his journey of discovery across America to learn about the father he never knew, Hugh Everett III, the quantum mechanic. The BBC Four one hour documentary will premiere on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 9:00pm (GMT).

This year is the 50th anniversary of Hugh Everett’s most important contribution to science – a controversial theory of quantum mechanics that predicts the existence of Parallel Universes, one of the most fantastic scientific predictions ever to have been conceived.

Hugh wrote the theory as a young PhD student at Princeton University, but for 20 years it remained largely ignored by the scientific community. Faced with derision and rejection, Everett abandoned academia and forged a career in the American defence industry. It was only at the end of his life, that his visionary work began to be taken seriously.

Hugh died of a heart attack in his home in 1982 where his body was found by 19 year old son Mark. Even though they had lived in the same house, the two of them were alienated and Mark knew nothing about his father’s work.

“My father never, ever said anything to me about his theories. I was in the same house with him for at least 18 years but he was a total stranger to me. He was in his own parallel universe. He was a physical presence, like the furniture, sitting there jotting down crazy notations at the dining room table night after night. I think he was deeply disappointed that he knew he was a genius but the rest of the world didn’t know it.” – Mark Everett.

In this intelligent and imaginative film, the wry and charismatic Mark takes a journey back into his father’s life, meeting his old college pals, family friends and colleagues and takes a crash course in the weird world of quantum mechanics in order to understand his father’s mind blowing theory.

The ever-changing lineup of musicians that play the songs of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett (aka E), unveils both its first “best of” compilation, ‘Meet The EELS: Essential EELS Vol. 1, 1996-2006 (CD+DVD)‘, and its first collection of rarities, B-sides, film contributions and unreleased tracks, the ‘EELS Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006 (2CD+DVD)’, each issued by DreamWorks/Geffen/UMe, scheduled for release on January 21, 2008.

All videos are available for the first time on DVD and all music is digitally remastered with both packages packed with never before seen photos, artefacts and Everett’s notes about each track.

‘Meet The EELS: Essential EELS Vol. 1, 1996-2006′ spans the first decade of the EELS with 24 selections on CD and 12 promotional videos on DVD. The CD opens with four tracks from the band’s 1996 debut ‘Beautiful Freak’, two tracks from the Eels’ highly acclaimed second album 1998’s ‘Electro-shock Blues’ follow plus a previously unreleased Jon Brion remix of “Climbing To The Moon.”

Four songs from 2000’s ‘Daisies Of The Galaxy’, which NME dubbed “a masterpiece in almost every way,” are represented on the Essentials album plus three tracks from 2001’s ‘Souljacker’, which Time Magazine crowned as one of the best albums of the year, was acclaimed overseas with NME calling it “downright brilliant” and the London’s Sunday Times named it Album Of The Year, writing that “the conventional wisdom that (the earlier album) ‘Electro-shock Blues’ was E’s masterpiece will have to be reassessed: it was clearly just one of his masterpieces.”

2003’s live-in-the-studio Shootenanny! (awarded four stars by Rolling Stone) adds two fan favorites, while five songs from the highly acclaimed, and best charting album in the band’s history ‘Blinking Lights and Other Revelations’ are included. Also on the Essentials album are the previously unreleased “Get Ur Freak On,” a live version of “Dirty Girl” from 2006’s ‘With Strings: Live At Town Hall’ and “I Need Some Sleep” from the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

Highlights within the 50 CD tracks ‘EELS Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006′ are longtime concert favorite “Living Life” from the Daniel Johnston tribute album, the previously unreleased 2006 cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell On You” and other covers including James Carr’s “Dark End of The Street” and Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”

Useless Trinkets also includes a large handful of BBC performances, unique live versions of “Novocaine For The Soul” and “My Beloved Monster,” tracks from films – The End Of Violence, Holes, Levity and How The Grinch Stole Christmas and many previously unreleased tracks including the original collections title track which frontman Everett performs backed by a 28 piece orchestra. The DVD features six performances from the EELS’ Lollapalooza 2006 performance, including a gospel rave-up take on “My Beloved Monster” and a high octane rumble through “Souljacker part I.”

‘Meet The EELS: Essential EELS Vol. 1, 1996-2006′ and ‘EELS Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006′ prove why, following that 2006 Lollapalooza performance, Rolling Stone wrote: “EELS define coolness.”

The EELS are one of music’s most acclaimed and idiosyncratic enterprises, accomplishing what The New Yorker calls “that rarest thing in contemporary pop: a unique sound.”
