A successful live music promotions company, which has worked with some of the best breaking artists in today’s music industry (such as Scouting for Girls, Dirty Pretty Things and Guillemots) has teamed up with the national enterprise campaign Make Your Mark to offer aspiring young music promoters across the UK the chance of a lifetime.

Curious Generation is offering the opportunity to help support people aged between 18 and 30 who are passionate about boosting the live music scene in their local area and have a genuine interest in running regular events. Curious Generation will provide credibility, expertise, advice and some financial support for young promoters who can source the best acts on a local and national level, promote and manage regular live music events and oversee technical details. In return the young promoter will receive a percentage of the profit share and can gain valuable industry experience and contacts, in addition to their normal work or study.

The opportunity applies to any live music from pop to classical and Curious Generation co-founders Alex Martin and Charles Baybutt are especially keen to hear from people who want to get into the music promotions business but do not know how to go about it, need support or do not necessarily fit what they think is the stereotype.

Alex Martin and Charles Baybutt

Alex Martin, said: “This is a great way for young people with a passion for live music to get involved with the music industry. The promoter’s job requires brilliant contacts, from agents and music labels to management and press. This is a unique chance to build up those contacts and get established in the business with a bit of support from us. So if this sounds like something you would be interested in, we want to hear from you!”

Hannah Bourne from Make Your Mark, said: “The music industry is calling out for enterprising types to come up with fresh ideas. This is a very special opportunity for young people to get a foothold in the music business and be entrepreneurial while doing something they love. What better way to make money than promoting gigs and liaising with the hottest acts and venues?”

Paul Latham, President, UK Music and Venues at Live Nation, said: “This is an exciting time to be involved in live music. With income streams dwindling from recording contracts there has never been more demand from artists to tour. Therein lies the conundrum for any aspiring, or indeed established, promoter; how to deliver the artists aspirations both technically and financially.

“Talent is not just what appears on the stage, there is also an art to understanding and developing the potential for those performers. I look forward to seeing the progress of those who take part in Make Your Mark in the Music Business.”

Young people who are interested can apply either individually or as a group via:

Make Your Mark In Music (www.makeyourmarkinmusic.org), which also includes a host of hints and tips about how to get into the music business.

Make Your Mark is the national campaign to unlock the UK’s enterprise potential. It aims to inspire people to have ideas and make them happen, especially those with untapped potential. The not-for-profit campaign is backed by an unprecedented coalition of businesses, charities, education bodies and government.

It was founded by the four leading UK business membership organisations – the British Chambers of Commerce, the CBI, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Institute of Directors. Their Director Generals sit on Make Your Mark’s board. It is also supported by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and is endorsed by the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

National organisations working closely with the campaign include:

Arts Council England; Association of Colleges; Black Training and Enterprise Group; Business in the Community; Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform; Department for Children, Schools and Families; Enterprise Education Trust; Learning and Skills Council; National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship; National Education Business Partnership Network; National Federation of Enterprise Agencies; Prowess; Quality Improvement Agency; Scottish Government; South-East England Development Agency (representing Regional Development Agencies); Shell LiveWIRE; Social Enterprise Coalition; Specialist Schools and Academies Trust; The Prince’s Trust; UnLtd; Young Enterprise

Make Your Mark (www.makeyourmark.org.uk)

Curious Generation is a live music promotions company, with experience of running 30-35 events per month in venues ranging from 100-1000 people; these events are a mixture of residencies, club nights and headline shows in London, across the UK and abroad.

Co-founders Alex Martin and Charles Baybutt are ambassadors for the Make Your Mark in the Music Business campaign. Artists that Curious Generation have worked with include: Dirty Pretty Things, Akala, Guillemots, Captain, The Hours, Scott Matthews, Sophie Solomon, The Upper Room, lethal Bizzle, Cold War Kids, Vincent Vincent and the Villains, Scouting for girls, the noisettes, Infadels, The Young Knives, Art Brut and the Holloways. In addition to working with all levels of artist, Curious Generation remains committed to its original ethos – to help source, develop and work with the most exciting cutting edge bands, artists and DJ’s.

Parka – Bollocks to Poverty

Since 2005, Broccoli Music has been helping to establish new bands and Djs in the live music scene, with their promotions team putting on monthly band nights around London and occasionally other cities around England.

Not only is Broccoli Music helping bands and Djs through their own events – with some of the unsigned bands that they’ve worked with going on to get record deals – along with Myspace, they’re also actively supporting ActionAid’s Bollocks To Poverty campaign.

I raise a toast to Mikee and Katie for supporting live music – and for taking the time to answer a few questions in this exclusive interview for BandWeblogs.com.

Jenny May: Who is behind Broccoli Music?

Mikee: Broccoli Music is a brother and sister duo, so there’s me, Mikee, the oldest and Katie being the younger, obviously. But there are some great people that have supported us since we began the company so there is a real family feel to the world of Broccoli. Broccoli Music is now a collective of young people wanting to make an impression on the UK music scene.

How and when was Broccoli Music formed?

Katie: Broccoli was started back in 2004, by the age of 22 I was still doing work experience jobs as I had no ‘experience’ so no one would give me a paid job in the music industry, so basically thought f**k it I’ll do something myself. So initially Broccoli was set up as a management company helping bands to get signed to major labels.

Mikee: So when I got back from travelling I had the same problem as Katie, hating the soulless 9-5, so when I got back I was gonna get into selling records but somehow got sucked into Broccoli and we kinda turned the company into more about promoting live events than the management side of things.

What kind of events do you put on?

Mikee: Our events are primarily unsigned/new music nights. We have Indiesexual which has just had its second birthday at Catch in Old Street. This is the gig where we showcase bands, we get to see what they’re all about, I guess you can say we take gambles on bands and see what they’re made of. Indisexual seems to have a great family atmosphere, we get past bands to come back and DJ for a bottle of booze…it’s usually quite a debauched gig that one.

Katie: Xfm Uploaded at the Bullet Bar is probably one of our favourite nights as we can help to get the bands radio airplay, a hell of a lot of exposure on the Uploaded website. Plus bands chosen for this gig get to play other Xfm gigs like the ‘gigloo’ we did at the metro ski and snow show.

Mikee: For us it’s been quite an honour to promote this gig for Xfm, we pinched ourselves, and still do sometimes.

Katie: They are a great company to work for as they really do support unsigned music, and not one of them is a corporate twat and they do love a good drinking session.

Where are they usually, and how often?

Katie: Indisexual is at Catch in Old Street (London), the second Wednesday of every month. Then you got Xfm Uploaded Live at the Bullet Bar this is usually the last Thursday of the month. Ermmmmm Bollocks To Poverty On tour! in association with Myspace at the Borderline that’s a bi monthly gig next one being April 1st, 2008.

Mikee: We go up to Newcastle when the weather’s nice and do the odd alldayer with some promoters up there, that one’s always a laugh and very very messy, the party don’t stop til the money runs out.

Katie: There’s a great music scene up there, and the people are totally lovely, we love going back!

Along with Myspace, how did you get involved with ActionAid?

Katie: We met Action Aid through Xfm, they came down to the Xfm Uploaded nights with badges and flyers n posters, we hit it off with them straight away and loved the concept of Bollocks To Poverty! So we offered to do nights with them as they were looking for ways to keep the buzz about the charity going after the festival season.

LR Rockets – Bollocks to Poverty

When people attend a Bollocks to Poverty show, how are they helping to support ActionAid and their cause?

Mikee: Firstly they can help ActionAid fight some of the conditions that keep people poor – like corporations exploiting poor workers – by taking a few minutes to sign-up to the campaign. Or with those events that are raising money for ActionAid, just by buying a ticket and turning up you’re helping ActionAid to help millions of people fight their way out of poverty.

How else can people get involved with the Bollocks to Poverty campaign?

Katie: By putting on their own Bollocks to Poverty event! Anyone can get involved and put on any kind of event – from a house party with your mates Djing or a club night or gig – whatever they’re into. ActionAid provides all the materials for free, like posters and banners, campaign cards, and stickers and badges to hand out on the night. Plus you get your own web page to advertise your event.

If people don’t want to put on their own event then they can support the tour by turning up to events, taking action online or promoting Bollocks to Poverty on their MySpace profile. All the information about how to get involved is on www.actionaidspace.org

Is Broccoli Music involved with all of the Bollocks to Poverty shows?

Mikee: Nope, the one we do with them is almost like the flagship store, all the action aid team get involved and get really excited about the gig. But we would always be more than willing to help people out that are doing a Bollocks gig for the first time for the charity.

How often are the events?

Mikee: Bi monthly

How long has Bollocks to Poverty been going? Can you list a few bands that have played?

Bollocks to Poverty has been running for about a year now. As well as some great unsigned bands like the Krak, Parka and The Skallywags performing at gigs, bands like Bloc Party and the Twang have also featured Bollocks to Poverty on parts of their tour. Some bands, like the Long Blondes, Noisettes, Klaxons and the Horrors have also supported the tour by giving tips for people thinking of putting on their own Bollocks to Poverty gig.

What was one of the more memorable shows that you’ve put on?

Katie: We put on a gig at The Enterprise September 2006 the floor was literally collapsing – everyone was jumping up and down, Conan and the Mockasins practically ate their microphones, The Draytones, The Delanies, Fear Of Flying, Ok Karaoke, Dante and the Pre Raphaelites.

Mikee: It was just one of those gigs that completely went off, it was rammed all day long.

How do you find unsigned bands and djs to play at Broccoli Music events?

Katie: We search long and hard for that band with something special, Myspace, demos, we get a lot of them through the post now, word of mouth.

Mikee: We’re never short of bands to work with, the London new music scene has so much to offer at the moment it’s really quite exciting.

Have there been any unsigned bands that have worked with you, and then went on to get a record deal? If so, who?

Mikee: The Draytones on 1965 records. The Toy Guns had a single release on EMI. Hatcham Social are working with Tim Burgess making some really special music right now. The Thirst are on Ronnie Wood’s label. The Wallbirds are doing very well, bought their single in HMV the other week which was lovely. Kingsize, The Dash, Kid Coda Sounds, Molloy and probably a fair few more.

What festivals has Broccoli Music been at? Where can we find you this festival season?

Mikee: We haven’t actually participated at any festivals yet, been trashed at a fair few though.

Katie: Well, this year May bank holiday we have our own 1200 capacity Broccoli Music Tent hosting 45 of our favourite bands so far.

Mikee: Basically we were approached by Myfest to book some bands for one of their stages, they really loved the bands we were booking and saw on our website how many cool bands we’ve worked with so offered us a stage.

Katie: This is the first festival of the year, £49 for a three day camping pass, it’s at the end of the central line, cheap booze, cheap food, all your mates in a field plus a classic set from Ocean Colour Scene, about 100 bands plus over the weekend, guest DJs. What more could you ask for????

Uber.com, in conjunction with A&R Worldwide’s MUSEXPO, Atlantic Records, Peer Music Publishing, Rebel Group/ADA Distribution and The Agency Group, announced the launch of the online music talent search, You Bring The Talent contest.

The winning musician/band will receive:

-An EP deal with Atlantic Records
-A music publishing deal with Peer Music
-A Booking Deal with The Agency Group
-Distribution through ADA from The Rebel Group
-A Showcase at The House of Blues in Hollywood, CA

HOW TO ENTER:

1) Sign up on Uber.com and make sure to check the Musician box on the form (this will allow you to add your music to your page.)

2) Gussy up your page with photos, music, your bio and make it all fancy-like, which is super easy on Uber.

3) Head over to the You Bring the Talent page on Uber and grab the embed code for your Voting Module, so you can pop it on your Uber page, or anywhere else you want people to vote for you.

WHAT TO KNOW:

1) The contest is open until March 31st, 2008 so there’s plenty of time to sign up and get people to vote for you.

2) Your fans can vote ONCE EVERY 24 HOURS. That’s right – all of your friends and fans can vote for you once every day, so let people know at your shows and on your website (where you can definitely put up your Voting Module.)

3) Think about this – If you’ve got 1000 MySpace friends and half of them vote for you three times a week, that’s 15,000 votes. Not too shabby.

4) You can check out the official rules here.

MySpace UK has just launched a new music offering designed to help new artists gain valuable exposure to fans and critics alike.

The new video based channel, Earwig TV (uk.myspace.com/earwigtv) will showcase exclusive video content created by a carefully selected mix of the hottest new bands and artists on MySpace Music.

For the first time ever music lovers will be able to find the best new musical talent on the site in one profile – with Earwig TV set to be THE place to discover the next Kate Nash or Enter Shikari.

The profile will feature both live footage and interviews from eleven bands and artists all tipped to be big in 2008. The profile will allow bands to introduce themselves, talk about their scene and their influences as well as showcase their music.

The eleven bands featured on the profile at launch are:

Operator Please
Operahouse
Palladium
The Raid
IAMX
One Night Only
Milburn
The Thirst
The Duke Spirit
The Clik Clik
Alphabeat

As well as appearing on Earwig TV, MySpace will promote video content from the profile across the site, offering new artists and labels exposure to its 10 million monthly unique users.

To be part of the profile, artists and/or labels must contact the talent hunters at MySpace to be considered. Earwig TV will consider both unsigned and signed acts from anywhere in the world and any genre.

Dom Cook, marketing and content director at MySpace UK comments: “Earwig TV is a place where music fans can discover new talent and be the first to hear about the acts of tomorrow. MySpace is already the home of music so the launch of Earwig TV is a natural next step in exposing the next generation of stars to our 10 million unique users. We’ve picked the first set of bands because they’re all creating a buzz at the moment as well as being prolific on the live scene in the last year.”

The profile itself will be supported on site with a weighty promotional campaign including banners and music home page promotion.

In January 2007, smooth jazz took a step “back to the future.” The legacy label Nu Groove Records was re-launched after an almost 10-year hiatus. Original founder David Chackler decided to revitalize the legendary label, re-acquiring the rights to the Nu Groove name from his prior partners who had acquired the company in 2004 from Chackler, and two years later shuttered it.

Originally the home of Michael Lington and “Down to the Bone,” Nu Groove had been the benchmark for aggressive, funky and genre bending smooth jazz. David Chackler, in conjunction with Adam Levy (N coded Records), and the folks at Red/Sony Distribution, decided the industry was ripe for Nu Groove to rise again, and represent the progressive “edge” of smooth jazz, and urban adult music.

Amazingly enough in just a few short months, Nu Groove re-staked its claim on the smooth jazz market when newcomer Jay Soto hit the Top 10 in the R&R charts and received a host of stellar reviews. The hard work of Nu Groove and Soto paid off when Brian Soergel in the Jazz Times proclaimed that Soto had “justifiably earned his way into the smooth jazz charts.”

Nu Groove artists have continued to gain attention in both the States and Canada. Bassist Michael Manson has climbed up to the Top 30 and two Nu Groove artists have received a total of four nominations at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. Saxophonist Darren Rahn has been nominated as Wind Instrumentalist and Album of the Year. Guitarist Dave Sereny was nominated as Guitarist of the Year and Album of the Year as well.

“I think it is incredible that in less than a year since the relaunch of Nu Groove that we have achieved such unprecedented success. It is a tribute to the staff here at the label, our partners at N Coded, and our distributor RED/Sony, and the “mind blowing talent” we have been able to acquire. In this short timespan we have already achieved Top 10 status with the Jay Soto release and the Top 30 with the new Michael Manson single. With the recently released Bob Baldwin DVD, a developing roster of talent that includes genre hit maker Darren Rahn, and artists like J Dee, Dave Sereny, Dee Brown, Nate Harasim, and others, we are expecting 2008 to be an even more successful year,” said Chackler.

Pre-order N-Dubz new single, “You Better Not Waste My Time” and get entered into a prize draw! The winner gets to spend a full day with the band themselves, as well as taking home a goodie bag stuffed full of games consoles and more: N-Dubz Pre-order Link.

An underground phenomenon, home-grown, straight from the streets of Camden, London, N-Dubz have been spittin’ out flavoursome tunes since last year.

This autumn they will be releasing their new single “You Better Not Waste My Time” out on October 22nd, 2007 through LRC/Polydor Records.

Watch N-Dubz – “You Better Not Waste My Time” video:

Past tracks like the head-nodding “Feva Las Vegas” and the infectious “I Swear” has already netted this trio a steady and loyal fan base. If any proof was needed, to date they have sold thousands of copies of “I Swear” – without any press and promotion – and their myspace page has seen them clock up over 53,000 friends, with a 100 new requests a day.

N-Dubz have seen their profile rocket, partly thanks to great support from fellow Londoners Sway and Kano. The group have also been championed by major players like Tim Westwood (Radio One), Diggz (Galaxy), and Trevor Nelson (Radio One).

Ready to make their assault on the UK charts, the Camden trio – female vocalist Tulisa plus rappers Dappy and Fazer – are a rare breed in the industry as they write, record and produce their own material. This fits well with the group’s mantra “Be Your Own Boss”.

“You Better Not Waste My Time” is a catchy urban gem, and is the track that is set to gain them recognition as one of the hottest-rising groups of the UK urban music scene.

N-Dubz are currently working on their debut album, set to drop early next year.

If you’re looking for a gig to attend this Saturday, September 15th, 2007 in the London area, then you might want to check out The Priscillas at Bardens Boudoir in London.

The Priscillas have a great sound, and as I mentioned in my review of their latest single, “Superhero”, they would be a great band to go and see play live. The Bardens Boudoir website describes The Priscillas as, “Looking like they’ve just stepped out of a Russ Meyer movie, these four girls with big boots, big hair and very small skirts rip through a handful of punk charged sixties go go groovers, delivering a mix of punk and garage rock with pop hooks and attitude a plenty.”

Sounds good to me.

The Gypsy Hotel show also includes:

The Bricklane Boogie Boys
Miss Vicky Butterfly
Stuart Turner

Plus:

The Bees Knees
Gawkagogo
DJ Scratchy

And Loads More!!

A full night of entertainment.

Bardens Boudoir is located on the Stoke Newington Road, Dalston, East London.

Garrison Starr is set to release her new album, ‘The Girl That Killed September’ on October 18, 2007. Starr will reach her fans using mobile social networking technology. The technology will enable Garrison to schedule LIVE mobile performances, schedule Q&A with her fans (the technology allows for utilizing your cel to “raise your hand” rather than being on a party line where everyone speaks at once), keep fans informed via voice, picture and text messaging from Garrison and create affinity programs to offer incentives, promotions and co-branded campaigns.

‘The Girl that Killed September’ is singer/songwriter Garrison Starr’s latest album and self-described “best work.” The songs range from American rock to pop/alternative rock. Listen to the album and you will be an immediate fan of her voice, talent, and honesty. ‘The Girl that Killed September’ was produced in Nashville by Neilson Hubbard (producer for Glen Phillips, Matthew Ryan and Strays Don’t Sleep) who also co-wrote on the album. This album is a joint venture between Garrison Starr and Sharal Churchill and is being released by Media Creature Music/12×12. The album will be available in October at retailers in the US nationwide including Borders.

Garrison Starr invites listeners into her visceral world by constructing an intimate portrait of contemporary life as experienced by a soul longing for meaning and connection and as a person dealing with love in many forms – physical and spiritual, lost and gained. A fearless performer, her audience always leaves reluctantly after getting a taste of her humor and humility. A native of Hernando, Mississippi, Garrison’s southern background subtly peeks through her songs as she blends a pop/rock/alternative sound with her country vocal curl. First time listeners fall hard for her voice.

Tracks on ‘The Girl that Killed September’ include “Understood,” (American Rock/Pop) “Byhalia Road,” (American Rock/Ballad) “Spectacle,” (Pop/Alt-Rock) “40 Days,” (Adult Alt-Pop) “Unchangeable,” (Alt-Pop) and “Brightest Star” (Alt-Pop/Ballad)

Garrison Starr’s previous four albums were released by Geffen Records, Back Porch and Vanguard (2 albums). Garrison has performed with artists such as Rhett Miller (from old 97’s), Edwin McCain, Mindy Smith, Melissa Etheridge, Steve Earle, Melissa Ferrick, Mary Chapin-Carpenter and played on the Lilith Fair tour.

I’ve been excited about all of the press releases, reviews and Guest Music Blogger entries that have been coming our way, here at Band Weblogs. It’s great to be able to keep up with music news in one place and the best thing – it’s free. I would like to thank everyone who has been contributing their blog entries, and helping Band Weblogs to grow into the resourceful and informative music blog that it is today.

Musicians, bands, artists, music publicists, record companies, music fans and more have been submitting blog entries to Band Weblogs for free, for online distribution. All Guest Music Blogger entries are reviewed before publication and whether the entries are formal press releases about bands and their music or laid back music blog entries written by musicians, most submissions get published.

In today’s music climate, it’s important for bands to find unique ways to get their music heard. I’ve been a firm believer in musicians taking matters into their own hands when it comes to online promotion. Of course, the more help a band can get, the better, and adding music blog entries to Band Weblogs is just one more way to help spread the word about up and coming bands, new releases, reviews, music videos, music blogs and more.

Not only are the entries published on Band Weblogs, but some blog entries submitted by Guest Music Bloggers have been featured on quality news websites like Reuters, USA Today and Austin American Statesman. The more people that read the music blog entries equals more free promotion for bands!

Dave Tommo and I host the Band Weblogs Podcast Show which features ‘podsafe’ music by up and coming unsigned bands and signed bands. We love doing the show and it’s important to us that we play music by bands and artists that we really like. Band Weblogs Podcast Shows are aired on CBS owned KYOU Radio and 1550AM in San Francisco as well as distributed to podcast directories around the net. Podcasts are another way for musicians to get their music ‘out there’.

To keep up to date on the latest entries, you can subscribe to our RSS Feeds and add them to your favorite RSS news reader. You can also receive blog entries to your inbox.
