In what started out as a live-in Old West motion picture set built in the 1940s, where a number of Westerns and early television shows were filmed including The Cisco Kid, Pioneertown, CA will be hosting a different breed of entertainer next month as influential alt/indie rock bands Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven will be rolling into town once again to co-host their fourth annual CAMPOUT music festival.
CAMPOUT 2008 will take place September 11th, 12th and 13th at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace in the High Desert of Southern California - just a stone's throw from the surreal beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.
The locale of this fest ties in perfectly with Cracker's own history as their signature album 'Kerosene Hat' was recorded here back in 1993 in the now-closed movie soundstage next to the Palace.
As Cracker co-founder and guitarist Johnny Hickman explains about the fest, "It started out four years ago as a birthday party for a few of us Virgos in Cracker and CVB and has turned into an annual pilgrimage for fans of both bands. These are the faces of our friends from all over the country and the world, and to see them all together in front of the stage at Pioneertown every year is an almost indescribable honor."
Previous CAMPOUT's have featured a broad range of indie, alternative, blues and country acts and this year's bill is no exception. With arguably their strongest line-up to date, CAMPOUT 2008 features the talents of veteran indie rockers Quasi and Built To Spill (whose frontman Doug Martsch has cited Camper Van Beethoven as a significant influence on his own band's sound), along with the damaged-folk of singer/songwriter Hod Hulphers and the stoner rock of Citay and Brant Bjork & The Bros. (Bjork, along with Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, was one of the co-founders of the influential stoner rock band Kyuss).
Along with full band performances from both Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven (the latter who are celebrating their 25th anniversary as a band this summer with a new greatest hits compilation aptly entitled 'Popular Songs'), there will also be a number of performances from various members from both bands, including an acoustic duo set with David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, McCabe and Mrs. Miller (CVB bassist Victor Krummenacher's haunting roots collaboration with The Sippy Cups' Alison Faith Levy) and Hickman's newly reformed pre-Cracker band The Dangers (a punk-meets-Kinks act that Lowery - who will be playing bass for them - claims were "The Replacements before The Replacements").
