Tony Christie Makes West End Stage Debut with Dreamboats and Petticoats (Is This The Way To) The West End?

Tony Christie - the legendary singer / songwriter is to make his West End stage debut, appearing in the smash-hit musical Dreamboats and Petticoats at London's Playhouse Theatre on July 5, 2010.
"I saw the show's original opening night in London almost a year ago and just loved the story." says Tony Christie, "And of course the music is incredible - The Platters, Phil Spector, Roy Orbison, Marty Wilde - all artists I grew up listening to. As soon as I saw it I've been searching for a gap in my diary to join the show."

Tony Christie will play the parts of 'Older Bobby' and 'Phil' (Bobby's father), who runs the St. Mungo's Youth Club, around which the hit feel-good production, is based.
With music from the late 50's and early 60's driving the story from start to finish, the show - which itself was inspired by the million-plus selling albums Dreamboats and Petticoats (One, Two and Three) - will suit Tony Christie down to the ground.
Fans will also be treated to a rendition of Christie's chart-topping single, "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo", which has been added specially for his run in the show.

This week also sees the release of a new album in the series, Dreamboats and Petticoats Summer Holidays - a 2 CD compilation of nostalgic, feel-good songs from the late 50's and early 60's that features classic summer tracks from Cliff Richard and The Shadows, The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley and Billy Fury alongside lost favourites such as Bobby Goldsboro's "Summer (The First Time)", The Shangri-Las "Remember (Walking In The Sand)" and Patti Page's "Old Cape Cod" which is sampled in Groove Armada's "At The River".

Born in South Yorkshire in 1943, Tony Christie is one of this country's most prolific and best-loved recording artists.
He rocketed to the #2 spot in the UK Singles Charts in 1971 with "I Did What I Did For Maria", which was quickly followed by the timeless classic, "Amarillo (Is This The Way To)" written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. The single sold over one million copies by 1972 and was awarded a gold disc the same year.
2002 saw a resurgence in Christie's popularity, confirming his status as one of the nation's most-loved singers, with the use of "Amarillo" on the soundtrack for hit TV comedy series, Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.
The single was re-released in 2005 for Comic Relief and went straight into the #1 spot in the Singles Charts where it stayed for seven weeks, becoming the biggest selling single of the year and the longest-running chart topper in nearly a decade.
His album, The Definitive Collection, also took the #1 spot in the album charts upon its release a week later.

I saw Dreamboats and Petticoats last week, and although Tony Christie isn't in it anymore, I thought that it was fantastic! Loved the music.
